This is why I love Cartoonist Kayfabe. Forgotten and obscure. I'm fairly well versed in comics. I've read Ennis' Hellblazer and Preacher etc. Had no idea this existed. Keep up the good work gentleman. One day the RUclips algorithm gods will align.
There’s an issue of their hellblazer run that is a prequel to this
The main character in this book was, I believe, introduced in Ennis' Hellblazer run, and I think this story is set after she broke up with John and went back home.
I grew up in Belfast and got my comics from the same shop that Garth Ennis frequented. There’s quite a big comic scene in Belfast. Everyone looking for some escapism I guess. Today’s episode touched upon there being no place for a creator to tell personal stories…. Well back in the 90’s Pat Mills published an interesting comic called Crisis which featured creators telling more personal stories specific to their part of the world. Interesting series to track down although I’m not sure if they made it to across the Atlantic.
Still have my copy of it in my box of Ennis centric comics. That box survived my first purge.
That's awesome you have an Ennis box - I have one also! Freaking love his work and it's at its best when it's with Dillon.
When are you going to show us The Beats by Harvey Pekar?
"Heartland" was included in John Constantine Hellblazer TPB (2011-2022 DC/Vertigo/DC Black Label) # 8.
Ennis and Dillon are at their understated best. It is a Contantine off shoot but does not need to be. Genius synergy.
Very happy to see this featured on here..Ennis and Dillon are like peanut butter and chocolate. I always thought that one shot stood very well on its own considering it's a spin off from HELLBLAZER.
GREAT book! Picked it up in 2000 because it was Ennis and DIllon and I had to have it. This is the team at some of their absolute best.
Had a feeling, it’s a Constantine spin-off
I love most everything I've come across of Garth's.
I picked this up in a $1 bin and enjoyed the read.
Proud to say I bought and read this in the late 90s. Always loved it
I bought everything Garth Ennis touched back then and bought this when it came out. But I haven't thought about this for years. I need to re-read it.
There is also and ad for the video game Re-Loaded, Ennis had a hand in writing the original game's (Loaded) comic adaptation. Another creator factoid!
Does anyone know if this story was reprinted anywhere? I could swear I’ve read it, but I don’t recognize the title or the cover.
Steve Dillon was living in Dublin at the time while Garth was in the North of Ireland.
