A few years ago, Kevin Smith was doing just audio interviews with various comic creators on his fatman on batman. The best of which is a 4 hour interview with Grant Morrison. The current incarnation of that show doesn’t allow for that kind of in depth talk with creators anymore, which is very sad. But here now we have the badasses at CK bringing the prime shit we all want to see/hear and i cant thank you guys enough for what you do. Ed, Jim, and Tom. Thank you for doing what you do. Years from now, people will be talking about the important work you guys are doing for the world of comics right now and we are all lucky to have you doing this stuff. Again, thank you.

As much as Frank Quitely is a phenomenal artist (and he is) I've been secretly hoping for him to do more writing. Frank Quitely is a BRILLIANT writer in himself and I KNOW why he doesn't do it, but man alive? If he could just be given carte blanche to write and draw his own stuff? The mans got an impeccable talent for it. (For reference, look up his animation he did and his work on Electric Soup)
Oh btw, when Frank says that he's an open and accepting guy, he absolutely is. Frank is an absolute gem of a man and I hope he knows it.
HA! Just got to the Leckie Soup name drop! Good stuff

Darrow, Bolland and Quitely all seem to be genuinely kind, introspective guys who have put in a tremendous amount of work to arrive where they are today. Truly inspiring chats with all three.

I’ve seen another interview/bio video on him but this interview really gives us the insight into what a kind, sweet, genuinely good person he is. Such a treat to hear him talk for almost 2.5 hours! And the stuff he said about Cartoonist Kayfabe brought a tear to my eye. Having made it to the end I love Quitely’s entire approach to making art. The standard he holds himself is ridiculously high, nearly unattainable, and any flaws he perceives in his own work are probably unnoticeable to 99.99% of people if they even truly are there. The guy is masterful and I admire and share his relentless desire for perfection, whether it ever comes. I would go so far as to say that much of Quitely’s work is so beautiful it’s spiritual. My medium is music but all the rules are the same. Once a studio recording is complete a four minute song might hide 30 hours of actual time spent from concept to final mix. And when any aspect isn’t perfect to my own ears I never get over it and would almost rather never listen to it. If one doesn’t have this fire in the belly one will never ever get close to one’s artistic goals unless you’re such a natural that you take it all for granted in which case we all hate you 😁 Here’s to OCD artistry. Is there any other kind?

  • @LarryKingUndead

Murderers row of comic book talent with these Shoot Interviews. Frank's work was shocking the first time I saw it, and I've loved it ever since. The bit where he talks about the comics coloring, and the Bolland recoloring of Killing Joke is mentioned I appreciate. I get where he and Bolland are coming from, how the wishes of the artist are often ignored, and while the Flex Mentallo recoloring I can get used to, the Bolland Killing Joke recolor is so dull compared to the original.

4:55 “In the experiment, rats were allowed to run around a maze. As the rats learned the spatial layout, the researchers recorded signature patterns of brain-cell firing. The scientists did not stop recording from these memory-imprinting cells when the rats subsequently fell asleep. They continued to eavesdrop on the brain during the different stages of slumber, including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage in which humans principally dream.
The first striking result was that the signature pattern of brain-cell firing that occurred as the rats were learning the maze subsequently reappeared during sleep, over and over again. That is, memories were being “replayed” at the level of brain-cell activity as the rats snoozed. The second, more striking finding was the speed of replay. During REM sleep, the memories were being replayed far more slowly: at just half or quarter the speed of that measured when the rats were awake and learning the maze. This slow neural recounting of the day’s events is the best evidence we have to date explaining our own protracted experience of time in human REM sleep.” Matthew Walker, Why We Sleep
