Lesson learned, if you run into Todd in the bathroom leave that man alone, he NEEDS to be there.
I think that's generally a good rule for everybody, I don't think many people are hanging out in bathrooms that don't need to be there.
Loser talk, you HAVE TO OUT PISS THAT MAN
Best McFarlane interview I think I've ever watched - I think he opened up more because he viewed this more as a talk about the trade with guys involved in the trade. I'm so glad to see you guys score this interview because I know it will bring many more into the Kayfabe Brain Trust. Loved hearing him talk about the toy making game. Loved how he laughed about the Kayfabe Effect when it was explained to him. I could hear the respect in his voice because he knows how much you guys respect comics.
Listening to Todd talk makes me want to push out a comic as soon as i can. I think many of us just see these giants in the industry and just put ourselves in a state of mind that we could never reach that level. However Todd was at our level once and he just kept working till he reached his goal and when he reached it he kept setting the bar higher.
It's a similar thing I have heard from book authors. "Get your daily 10 pages in. No matter what is going on, how you feel, get your 10 pages in." With Todd its "Get in your 1 page a day."
It's all about getting the work in. It seems daunting at first, but the more you do it, the more you see the work you have done, next thing you know - your book or comic is complete, and you have a powerful feeling of accomplishment.
You reach that mountain top one step at a time, take in the view, and look to the next mountain to climb.
Todd's not stopping until he gets an oscar.
I clicked on this video to hear Todd McFarlane talk about comic books, but what I found was Todd McFarlane filling me back up with motivation to continue pursuing my own art in music.
Thanks, Todd. ❤️
Best Spidey artist EVER!
Most important interview of the year. I’m calling it now
It's gonna be real hard to top this!
That Feeling When you have to go to the bathroom during Todd McFarlane's shoot interview, but can't because he'll think you're soft. Great video!
After this everyone will be banging down the door for a shoot interview
"1 page a day, then quit." - this applies to all tasks at any job.
That ending was incredible dude, had me laughing like crazy, what an incredible character Todd is, you gotta love him.
that was awesome. he's still more enthusiastic than most of the people at marvel or dc today.
Love Todd. Just his professional attitude and outlook towards fans makes him a great creator. Dude tries hard when most people just phone it in. His enthusiasm and love for the industry is infectious. Thank you for this
Toddy Mac getting mailbox money off his jobber work 30+ years after the fact!
This feels like the career victory lap.
We need a new Spawn video game. Maybe an open world game this time! Imagine exploring Rat City and NYC as Spawn fighting criminals, demons, cyborgs & more!
Spawn multiverse is a first step
There's a wealth of value in this interview that has nothing to do with artwork. This guy is business-smart in ways many creators lack. Success looks a lot like hard work mixed with luck, and Todd said this so many ways. The best was hearing him breakdown how he planned the runup to 300. Made so much sense. So obvious in retrospect.
I was at Wizard World like 15 years ago, and the convention people tried to close down Todd's line at the end of the day, making the cutoff right where I was standing. But Todd wouldn't have it, he stayed and finished the signings. I'll never forget that.
Much appreciation to Cartoonist Kayfabe and Todd for this video interview! SO valuable!
I remember the time he took to sign everybody's stuff back in Boston in 1990.
I haven't gone to the bathroom in 5 months, since this interview. Thanks, Todd!
Hey shout out to the guy that spoke up for Spawn in that exec's ear! I still have my bendy Violator with a wire popping out his armpit, in fact all my McFarlane figures outlasted the growing up purge (miss those Battletech and Exosquad, traded for a slim stack of Aliens comics!). Anyway, this was just great to hear these back stories! Thanks for the privilege!
@@roymakescomics Haha, Exosquad was dope!
This was an amazing interview guys! I'm not a huge fan of the majority of the Image era during the nineties or even mainstream comics but I can appreciate McFarlane's art and also the profound, positive impact he had on creators rights and the industry as a whole.
Dang. This was killer. Way to do it up boys... Perfect interview. You knew when to pull back and let Todd roll and just the right spots to jump back in. Excellent work.
I love how honest and straightforward Todd is. He is just dropping life lessons left and right. The man is a constant source of inspiration.
Some things sound so simple, and they are, but it can take a lifetime for some people to really learn some of this stuff.
GREAT interview, fellas!
Kayfabe’s new interview series, “ A word in edgewise”.
This made me want to run through walls for comics
Loved this inspiring interview! I'm working harder than ever on my comic after watching it. Thanks Todd, Ed & Jim!
Would love ❤️ to see 👀 you guys interview "Bart Sears"! If you have already then exclude this, and I need too research & check ✔️ harder.
I could listen to McFarlane talk all day! He's such an enthusiastic story teller, sharp, motivational, and funny.
Todd / Spawn in 1992 was the catalyst for my near 30 year love affair with comics, and Jim & Ed have renewed my vigor and passion for “reading MORE comics” 1000-Fold, so seeing the three of them converse for nearly and hour and half was seriously a real treat (even if Todd really didn’t ANSWER any of their specific questions :) Thank You Kayfabe!!!
My favorite part of the interview is when Todd starts using metaphors and Jim almost loses it. However, this man is 100% correct and everything he discusses regarding being successful is not only relevant to comics but other industries as well.
From the early days in the late 80's when I was a teenager, to today, I always loved hearing Todd talk about that grind and hustle. Even today with "Todd's prayer" I'm like... I gotta crush that shit!!!! And I mean, I'm not even in this game, I don't have a desire to do anything freelance or for the big two,.... but boy it gives me some energy to pump into my webcomics.... 🙏🙏
ED, you hit the nail on the head. Todd IS the white Dame Dash!!!!!! strong personality that will intimidate and offend week minded people but its all true.
Fuck, I wish I would have heard this when I was 20...
I think one of the main reasons why we don't have a new "Jim Lee" or "Mcfarlane" in the industry, is also because the the importance has shifted from the artists towards the writers. In the 90s an artist name was placed above the writer on covers and/or ads, because the the artist basically sold the comic at the time, and that also made it possible for Image to have been as big as they were. Nowadays when you ask a comic reader who's work they follow, they would usually say a writer's name.
I mean I really like Rafael Sandoval, Mikel Janin, Jason Fabok and Jorge Jimenez' work. Their art looks amazing. But I wouldn't buy a comic of theirs unless it has a good writer/story so I can enjoy reading the comic as well.
"One page a day. Take the weekend off. One page a day. Take the weekend off. One page a day. Take the weekend off. One page a day. Take the weekend off. One page a day. Take the weekend off. One page a day. Take the weekend off."
thanks for the advice Todd, bomb ass interview!!!!
Great video
Rare combination of ambition and humility with Todd. He goes for the biggest and best opportunities, but he has a realistic view of his position (like with the Toys R' Us story). A Super Bowl where we all come away winners
He should probably care more about quality than numbering (even if Marvel and DC are doing the same)
We're all waiting for the second coming of Stan Lee. Todd McFarlane might be the next Stan Lee
I saw Todd at Fan Expo Vancouver 2020. He was super cool. He didn't realize his line was as huge as it was (it was split in two sections). when he realized about the two hundred fans that were out of sight, he walked around to us, shook hands, took photos, and told us not to worry, he would see us all. Before that an older man in a suit was talking to some parents with kids in the line. He moved over to me and asked me if he could budge in line. I told him sorry, but no. He said but it's just such a long line.. I said sorry. Later I learned he was Todd's father... A real jokester, and a real people person.
I'm looking forward to Tod interviews when he gets really old.
I know a famous comic book creator. One of the hardest things for them to do is leave the convension center to go out to eat. Every ten feet they get stopped by fans, friends, and fellow creators that want to talk to them. I could see why Todd just stays at the table.
I skipped going out to breakfast to watch/ listen to this!!! Thank you Ed and Jim!!! Thank you Todd!!! Those were the best pieces of over done toast I’ve ever had!
@27:31 todd explains why you will never be as good as Todd McFarlane
Next level stuff. Nice work, fellas! He brought up an interesting point. Who are the 20-something year old rising comic stars of today to "replace" them?
After I read Nightly News back when it first came out, I was sure that Jonathan Hickman would revolutionize the industry. Was so excited for all of his work. I know he's a big wig at Marvel now, but I am disappointed that he focused so much on doing work for hire instead of working on his own stories.
@@gabrieljimenez9762 I don't know how old they are, but I'd say every artist that Rick Remender works with.
Wow. Had an excellent 90 minutes thanks to you guys, and a lifetime of wisdom from the ToddMeister. Very cool
Anyone who wants to accomplish anything, especially in media, needs to llisten to this & take him to heart. 1.5 hrs of gold from a work ethic genius. The Kobe of comics.
Todd’s energy is contagious!!
PLEASE talk to liefeld
This show transcended comics & entertainment and got catapulted into the life. Loved it. I have so much to say about what was discussed. I need to rewatch, check my notes and process. Thank you Jim, Ed and Todd.
Todd is like Dark Stan Lee. Such a good hype man and talker.
Todd has always been an inspiration to me. I started collecting his comics when I was 10 years old and I'm 38 now. I draw cartoons for fun and interviews like this help me push myself to try new things.
Damn I love Todd! This dude lights the fire under your feet to get it done!
this is the single best video a new comic creator could possibly watch
So many gems here fellas. I fuckin LOVED this. Thanks a lot guys. “Don’t let the old guys do it!”
Man, a page a day, I’ll be able to do that one day when I’m self employed! Right now it’s just as much as I can with the time I have 🤘
Hey Todd, I'm 155.
Improvement by 2% in ten places.... MAN. That'll tighten up your work!!!!!!!
I ADORE THE FIRST 50 ISSUES OF SPAWN... but this man has one of the biggest egos I have ever seen. He doesnt rival Trump, but goddamn... comics biggest ego.
The guy is a fucking g. A mensch. A great human. Damn, I gotta be a better dad. I'm always coming out with that old man shit to my teenage son. Made me think hard. Brilliant interview fellas.
Forget 15,000 this should bump subs to 20,000. Amazing to wake up to this, what an great interview. Todd is forever the comic "Boss".
Usually when you put out a comic you got a 50%/50% chance of succeeding, but I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal, so you take my 300 issues, and add 300 in the next 27 years, you got 143% chance
Best McFarlane interview ever. A clinic on success.
The bony king of nowhere
He sat upon his throne
He didn't much like sitting there
His throne was made of stone
Todd cutting promos like only Todd can. "I am the pig that built the brick house" had me rolling.
He is right about the numbering thing though, it is absolute bullshit that it puts people off, especially kids. The first issue of X-Men I ever read was 200 something. To me, it was more interesting that there was 200 something stories with these guys that I had never read! I used to spend more money to buy the little guide book comic that told you what happened in those other comics.
Yes! Was just about to head to bed, but gotta watch this first!
his 'grind' and 'hustle' are down right inspirational. i think he's modest on his skill-set too. thanks for all the great comics Todd.
I don’t know how you guys are going to top this one. Can’t wait to see him next week at Fan Expo Vancouver.
Todd McFarlane is the opposite of Kevin Eastman in personality. superior grind and hustle mentality that's why his so successful.
Amazing
I love Todd.
He's right 2 types of dogs. Entrepreneur has got me this far, I don't work full time jobs to set up my retirement. I do it to benefit my other 4 creative interest that sets up my retirement. I can always have a job clean up cut my hair exercise routines eat right etc..but I feel better slaving on my own merit instead of waiting for trickle down economics to bail me out.
in japan they make animes to boost manga sales and they aren't hype focused on superhero comics rather the most popular comics are shonen comics that are oriented towards young boys and men. Maybe if we started animating the comics we make that are outside of marvel and dc comic book sales would go up, but then again mangakas produce on weekly schedule typically so its easy for people to get hooked.
Love how his strategy for victory is just math. He has planned to beat you 20 years ago. All hail the Toddfather.
Love Todd Interviews. Wish he'd draw more.
This part at 48:56 I'd agree with if they even advertised the comics with the movies. Like even now this interview is a bit older but marvel especially still aren't putting little ads in tandem with the movies. DC kinda does but it's not consistent. Loved the conversation though Todd is great and listening makes me wanna draw a million things
I'm glad it was Todd and Spawn breaking that record. He deserves it! 😊
Why does Todd cover up Hank Kanalz in that photo? What’s the backstory?
I could listen to Todd speak for hours. The guy is a wealth of information and pretty inspiring.
Elite Todd Father Interview.
I enjoyed this! when he did Infinity Inc it blew me away. It's amazing what he has done with his career. What an amazing attitude.
Like seeing Octopus Pie right behind him.
If they ever make a movie on this guys life, they need to get Ralph Fiennes to play him
He downplays his amazing talent and skill as an artist. One of the best to ever draw comics.
0:40 Gospel means truth, only time there’s any of that in comics is in gospel tracts. Hustle is right, but more in the 2nd definition sense since he and his image buddies, as he calls them, did more than their fair share of that.
What an awesome guy! Wisdom is to share knowledge and lead the pursuit in democratizing!
I love Todd. Miss you Ed! I will watch this a couple times again!
I never liked Spawn, but what the hell. Now I want to read it. Todd seems like a really nice guy.
Amazing. I'm only 20 minutes in and it's already so engrossing. Great job, guys!
Great interview with a lot of insight. Love the hustle.
Met Todd in 1992 and Wow, never thought he would be were he is now and also the advice he gives is Top Notch.
I like Todd, except for that Baseball BS.
The last four minutes oh my god fucking caveman that shit is sooooo funny 😂😂😂
I'm getting RL Michael Scott vibes here.
Thank you for everything Todd I got the Donny Cates cover I love it on number one
Funniest video so far. Good work getting the Toddfather.
30 secs in and had to leave a like
this should be in the library of Congress Archives!
I will be coming back to this video for many years to come. I really appreciate you guys asking a question and then just laying back and letting Todd do his thing. Absolutely the best thing I've seen in a LONG time
