Okay, I don't normally leave comments but I discovered this channel for myself about 6 months ago. I'm a cartoonist and I absolutely love Ed and Jim and these videos. That said this interview is PURE GOLD. I love hearing these top notch veterans sharing stories and talking shop. So I left a comment just to say thank you for this one...and all you do.
I love that he’s not afraid of using modern tools to create comics. He’s one of the first pros that I noticed to not only use a Cintiq and Manga/Clip Studio but also YouTubing his process.
I showed this man some of my attempts at comic art at a NY con back in '86 (?). He was there with Alan Moore, just walking around, checking out the tables. They were both super gracious and looked at each page of my amateur meisterwerk. I'll never forget Dave Gibbons asking me how old I was (17) then responding "Well, you're certainly much better than I was at 17!" I walked on air for about a year after that. Thank you for this interview!!
The Toddfather and now Dave Gibbons - awesome interviews guys! I love that he did the LP cover for "Too old to rock-n-roll too young to die" and didn't get Jethro Tull.
It's refreshing to have a comic book channel that focuses on the technical aspects of the medium. (No politics, no drama. Just comic book talk that doesn't alienate anyone. THANK YOU!)
Great interview. Dave is a great talker. I interviewed Mick McMahon a few months ago and after watching this I wish I knew back then that he shared a studio with Dave so I could get all the Dave Gibbons stories out of him.
Another amazing interview! Loved hearing him talk about his artistic influences (which I didn't recognize). Can't wait for his podcast. A Cartoonist Kayfabe breaking news story there!
Great interview. I love the way that Dave Gibbons has boiled down creating comic art down to a set of specific steps he follows to maximise his output. And his output has been phenomenal
Great interview. Have you ever thought about interviewing some other greats from 2000ad? Mike McMahon, Brian Bolland, John Wagner, Ian Gibson, Colin Wilson etc.
Imagine sitting in Grenoble, France, listening to this, then hearing that Gibbons and every other one of my heroes was here one day for a comics convention! Of course, this is probably about 35 years ago, and I was too young and not even living in France. Still what a LEGENDARY event that must have been and it's crazy I've never heard about it, or it never happened again...
Such a treat. You weren't kidding around when you said something big was coming. Very cool interview with a great artist. Loved his insight and was blown away with him talking about his thumbnails. It made sense to me that for Watchmen he would put SO much effort into a classic, but at the time, he wouldn't have known that it was going to be such a success and that his thumbnails would be printed. So finding out that he did/does this for all his work is mind-blowing. I'm not a cartoonist, but I found his process to be super interesting and informative. I think of his work and what comes to mind is storytelling. He's not the flashiest or the most stylistic but few out there can tell a story as well as Mr. Gibbons. Plus, a master letterer, he's a complete package. LEGEND.
This channel is amazing, guys. You two rocks! Congratulations! And a great interview. (like always, I have discover this channel recently and I am a big fan) Just want to point out that Arturo Del Castillo (that was named for Dave) dont was european but chilean born, argentinian based amazing artist. In the 60s in argentina was the end of the Golden Age of comics and many artist where go to work for DC thompson and Fleetway, two of the bigs UK publishers. Besides to Del Castillo where big names like Alberto Breccia, Solano Lopez, Enrique Alcatena (a decade later) and many others. Also: It would be incredible if you made specials about comics from other countries since you always have interesting points of view and knowledge of what they are talking about. Thing that is not found much on youtube about Comic. Works like the masterpiece of Mort Cinder (Ohesterheld-Breccia with a great Fantagraphics edition) Sergio Toppi, Dino Battaglia, Moebius, Druillet, etc ...just an idea. Congratulations again!
Oh man is this a treat while sipping coffee on a sunday morning and squinting at Clip Studio. I agree with his gushing about it, the inking tools are sexy. Nice work, fellas!
This was absolutely awesome. Newer subscriber to the channel and I love it, but this was probably the best content so far that I've watched. Thanks Ed and Jim for the great interview.
Great channel, it’s something I’ve been wanting to see for years and it was sorely missing in order to make comics relevant in the modern day. CBR and all these countdowns and rant videos on the current state of comics never cover what actually make comics great, while you guys are doing comics, and their creators, and the creative process justice. I’m sure he’s at the top of your lists to find and interview, but do you guys have any info on the whereabouts of Barry Windsor Smith, or any potential of doing an interview with him at some point? It’d be great to hear what he’s been up to over the past 25 years. It’s already amazing that you’ve got such great interviews with Bissette, Gibbons, Vigil, etc. Who I can’t believe up to this point haven’t had interviews of any substantial length aside from in print before you guys. Keep doing what you’re doing, I want to thank you guys so much for bringing such important resources to the history of comics.
@@CartoonistKayfabe I get it, but I would love a Kayfabe Crew Team Up. To me, you guys are the Gang Starr of comics. Rugg and Piskor got it on lock like Guru/Premier. One love!

Fun Fact: the artist David Hockney has been doing a lotta digital art lately too & talked at extent about using new digital mediums; dude's 82 (!!)

One of the best artist interviews ever!!!
Gibbons was definitely underutilised in 2000AD's recent Future Shock documentary. What a fascinating bloke. Great interview!
What a delightful interview! Dave Gibbons seems like such a class act! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Great interview. Dave is a great talker. I interviewed Mick McMahon a few months ago and after watching this I wish I knew back then that he shared a studio with Dave so I could get all the Dave Gibbons stories out of him.

Dave Gibbons seems like the nicest guy on the planet 🌎
The last panel of “The Stars Fell on Stockbridge” still moves my heart ❤️! And thanks for Martha Washington! 🖖
Great interview. I love the way that Dave Gibbons has boiled down creating comic art down to a set of specific steps he follows to maximise his output. And his output has been phenomenal
I was just thinking about if they were ever going to get Dave Gibbons on the show. Then Bam! Pow! Here he is.
This interview was a delight! Dave Gibbons seems so genuinely engaged and interested to answer your questions. Awesome job you guys!!!
How the f*ck does this channel not have more subs? They do some of the greatest interviews I've seen in the comics industry
fellas. thank you for consistently putting up great videos. loved the insight from mr. gibbons.
I just got 'watching the watchmen' and then you drop this. Kayfabe Effect! Great interview.
I'm so ready for a Dave Gibbons podcast series.
Great interview. Have you ever thought about interviewing some other greats from 2000ad? Mike McMahon, Brian Bolland, John Wagner, Ian Gibson, Colin Wilson etc.
Legend. My favourite work by him is the gorgeous early black & white art on Rogue Trooper.
Wow, guys! What an absolute pleasure from beginning to end. You really knocked it out of the park with this one. Well done!
I just watched Future Shocks documatary last night by happenstance. Can not wait for this! Thank you fellas
Road to Northampton fellas!
Amir Malekpour I really liked that doc. Had no idea about the Hardware movie ripoff angle before that.
Tony McMillen I was blown away by the Robocop similarities to Judge Dredd; even verbatim dialogue.
Amazing shoot interview! You guys said you had something big for Sunday morning and no kidding! Time to watch again.

Great interview! I hope you're able to take a look at that newsletter Dave talked about (and put under the microscope).

Amazing! Un autor de por estos lados que no había escuchado y de inmediato despertó mi interés! Muchas gracias por comentarlo!
Ken Reid and Leo Baxendale are two of the best British comics artists. So cool that some of them are lettered by Dave Gibbons!
Absolutely loved it! Dave is indeed a nice guy :D I loved the Mick McMahon story and giggled on that Caligula stick LOL
Aw you guys have gone and done it now. Great interview with a wonderful artist/ wonderful guy! Kudos!

18:23 I second Dave Gibbons recs. Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese is like Terry and the Pirates but it was written by Ernest Hemingway
Best interview so far I think. Great questions and amazing responses. Incredible content, thank you CK!
That was such a great interview. I enjoyed every second of it. Thanks guys! Good job!
This was absolutely awesome. Newer subscriber to the channel and I love it, but this was probably the best content so far that I've watched. Thanks Ed and Jim for the great interview.
Ahhh. Hell! this is such a damn good interview !! Ed and Jim, you absolutely rule!! Fabulous insight into Dave Gibbons and his influences!!!
Hey Ed your hype for this had me like a demolition derby radio commercial, Sunday did not disappoint! Thanks!

Speaking of partnerships and working together, will the Kayfabe Crew be teaming up?
On comics? Probably not. We're kings of our own comic book kingdoms. The Cartoonist Kayfabe youtube channel is a diarchy.
@@CartoonistKayfabe I get it, but I would love a Kayfabe Crew Team Up. To me, you guys are the Gang Starr of comics. Rugg and Piskor got it on lock like Guru/Premier. One love!
nice
