Geof was such a nice guy when I spoke to him at NYC Comic Con years ago. He talked me for like 20 minutes and told me cool stories about working on Matrix and talking with Keanu Reeves at a party afterward. He told me that Keanu asked him if he was the guy who designed the ships used in the movie and Geof was like, yeah? And Keanu was like, "They were super uncomfortable to sit in." Geof was like, "I uh designed the outside mostly..." And then Keanu smiled and told, 'I was just kidding man."

Been a "fan" of Darrow since about 1985. Still have my old copy of Total Metal (Danish version of Metal Hurlant) from 1985 right here. The one story in it I always loved was ofcourse Bourbon Thret. But that was also the only story I had from him in many many years.. But Bourbon always stuck with me.. When we were playing Worms in the 90ies my team names were almost always Bruce Lee, Cobalt 60, Groucho and ofcourse Bourbon. When "the Internet" started happening I now and again tried to find more Darrow.. but almost always only found a french version or "out of print" things.. My avatars around the net often was Bourbon.. That drawing of him playing the accordion just always thrilled me.. and made me shake my fist against the sky "I WANT MORE BOURBON THRET"!!! I could not believe it when I some months back finally tried to find som Darrow again.. and found Shaolin Cowboy. And then found this channel... When mr. Darrow said that Shaolin Cowboy and Bourbon "it's the same guy" .. it just warmed my old beaten up Heart.. (restarted 2 years ago) 🤣 Thank's for this lovely interview 😍

Yeah! This was the interview I’ve been hoping for my whole life. Seriously they discuss all the things I love, Frank Miller, Moebius, Matrix, Manga, BD - process… this was the one. Geof Darrow… what a legendary talent, what a sweet guy. Kayfabe crew effortlessly pulled off the greatest Darrow interview of all time! The GOATs when it comes to in-depth comic reportage and analysis!

He really is a sweet guy for someone who has drawn more pound-for-pound carnage than pretty much anyone else. It’s always the nice ones you need to watch out for, eh? 😆 I love that the beautiful French countryside has a comics legend quietly residing within it, whom works amongst his unmatched collection of toys and manga when he’s not palling around with the unassuming French farmers. Great interview with a living legend!

I also remember an interview with Frank Miller about how he was pissed that Sam Rami ripped off the hole in the head cover for Hard Boiled for one of his shots in The Quick and the Dead. He mentioned Rami working for Dark Horse at some point and how movies in general always take from comics without crediting them.

There's a million things I loved about the interview, but my favourite was the comment about some of the heroes in Asian films looking like regular people. I've always liked how Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh or even Jackie Chan dressed and looked like people you could pass by on the streets without a second thought, but they did some insane stunts, that to this day would never fly in Hollywood films.
Also, I knew that he was hangin' out with some awesome people, but I didn't know that he worked or crossed paths with almost everyone important for the comic book medium and then some.

Random comment here: i’ve been drawing a comic book for the past couple of hours and this is the 3rd staight kayfabe interview i’ve listened to. Thank you guys for keeping me company. This is the first time i’ve listened to a darrow interview and he sounds like such a sweet guy. Definitely not the picture I had in
my head when I was seeing his comics as a kid. Hell, I didn’t even know he was an american because his worked looked so different from the american comics i was reading back then.

There's so much to unpack here, this was such a joy to listen to! Geof has been one of my favourite artists since the first time I laid eyes on that oversized Big Guy trade and it's always been so wonderful to hear how humble he is in interviews.
One interesting point that popped out to me was about how Otomo had been able to rework Akira into a more perfected mould after doing the movie by finishing off the book. It's something I've always loved about Otomo and that work in particular and I thought it might be interesting to note that Miyazaki did exactly the same thing with Nausicaa. They both started the Manga versions of each piece in 1982 and after doing the movie in 1984 Miyazaki also worked through on expanding the story in the Manga version of Nausicaa until 1994. An interesting parallel between two titan creators.

Thanks for this great interview ! The man is amazing, he does great things in comics and more still he's an humble man- When i first saw Hard boiled i was blown away from just how much stuff and details you could find into one of his panels. Just crazy ! But i also liked the storytelling side, he uses composition to guide your eye actually on the page. I think he's very passionate for what he does, he says "I just want doing comics", he's humble so he minimizes his great talent in doing comics.

Geoff: "Do you think my inking is ok?"
    Ed: "Are you kidding?"
That had me dying laughing. This is nearly 3 hours of amazing content. Ed and Jim knew how to let the guest ramble and Geoff spills out so many great stories because of it. I'm so grateful for what Ed and Jim did and it always makes me happy to find videos like this in their library. I wouldn't be able to appreciate comics the way I do if it wasn't for these two.

I met Geof in Chicago around 91/92 and I saved a ton of money to buy art and when I got to his table he had all those Hard Boiled drawings there all cut up and I was really confused by it. Guess I missed something about that discussion of graphite-graying/lightbox. Simple way to keep the original pencils untouched and still get a great dark ink result is to xerox the pencils from the get go on whatever kind of paper you want. Then fire up the lightbox and directly ink those xeroxed pencils.

Fun interview! Darrow's had an interesting career. If you interview him again I'd be curious to find out what kind of paper he uses to make comics. I ask because with a light box sometimes you can't see through it enough if the paper is too thick. He also mentioned Jamie Hernandez and using a brush....earlier in the year Jamie shared drawings from his sketchbook (on Instagram stories) and all of them were done with a brush pen. Fun drawings. Someone then asked Jamie if he'd ever use a brush for his pages and he said that he didn't feel comfortable doing that.

Such a nice guy and one of the best artists. Always enjoyed talking to him when he is in Toronto. I love my Shaolin Cowboy original. :) The show needs to do a review of the Lead Poisoning book!

Geof Darrow is one of my biggest influences as an artist, I model my style off of Darrow's work, all time fav artist. It must have been great to talk to him

There's this tool for drawing perspective lines called a Centrolinead. James Gurney talks a bit about it in his blog.

What a fascinating interview! I think this is my favorite of the many amazing interviews on this channel. You guys are doing a great service to humanity! I can't wait for Geof's new books to come out!
