The Absolute Edition is an embarrassment of riches - as revelatory as the Year One set. It has both the Bolland and Higgins versions, with the Higgins on a rougher paper stock. Plus the script and more. Worth seeking out
It is weird how they chose to make the the original coloured version ‘faux vintage’ by putting it on newsprint style paper stock whereas it was originally on better quality paper and a ‘deluxe’ book. It works for Year One as that feels authentic but the Absolute Killing Joke feels like it’s needlessly apeing the Year One Absolute in that way.
I have only just found this channel and i am so happy i have been trying to find something like this for years. I'm so sick of watching videos of people showing slabs and talking about grades and bullshit. I cant believe the people you have interviewed. A channel for true comic book readers no just band waggon fans. Thank you Lads I really appreciate your work.
Three things- 1. Brian Bolland is awesome. Thank you Mr. Bolland for your time. It amazes me that, from the comfort of my home, I can listen to one of the great artists of our time discuss his work. 2. Camelot 3000 needs some love on the channel. 3. Look up Carol Day by David Wright. Because of this interview I just looked him up. HOLY CRAP! What a master! Another great one guys!
Thankyou so much, guys. This just might be the greatest gift anyone ever gave another person. I even got out my copies (old and new) to read along with you both and Mr Bolland. I cannot lie... my inner fan boy had a full blown artgasm.
Ed and Jim, you've really excelled yourselves with this. The erudition you guys bring to this interview is extremely impressive. I can tell BB is impressed.
So interesting to hear Bolland's approach to color - and that he is aware that no environmental light affects how he colored the book. You think about how interior shots are usually tinted a little blue or that anything lit by artificial light has some warmth that it spreads around - it is very much a choice to keep the colors without any environmental light. I think that is where Higgins excelled in the colour; you are drawn into the environment of the madness of his colors. Not to take away from Bolland's version, but in terms of story, Higgins' color seems to draw you in. If you took Bolland's color and put a filter over the indoor and dramatically lit panels - it would make that color sing.
Good to see Brian back on the channel! Always love hearing the process of these titans of illustration. Next time he's on, get him to do an episode on his Walter the Wobot comics and see his reaction to his old comedy 1 pager comics. I VASTLY prefer the British artists black and white stuff. Like I'm so used to 2000ad from back in the day where it was in black and white so it's what I'm used to. Colouring doesn't really add much to these guys work for me, it's like seeing V for Vendetta with the colour reprints. I understand that most comic readers prefer colour, but I love me black and white. Would LOVE it if you could get Mike McMahon on the channel. I'd love to see people give Mike McMahon more notice. Dudes a legend.
Upvote for Mr McMahon - although he never had the Mooreian fortune of a Watchmen or Killing Joke to forever seal his reputation, McMahon was (for me) the third corner of the Bolland/Gibbons triangle, the perfect counterpoint to their precision. Book Palace do have copies I believe of the Apex McMahon Dredd and I long for similar treatment of his Slaine work, however brief. McMahon had a direct influence I would say on the Deadline crowd, but even Mignola and Miller share the DNA I think. Incredibly kinetic, but like the late Kevin O'Neill, a strong hardware designer too.
This was just brilliant gents, thank you so much for showing this, and Mr Bolland is a real gentleman, and one of the finest comic book artists of all time, sublime.
Fantastic, this was amazing. Please do a feature on Mick McMahon. Mick’s Dredd work, his brilliant Slaine stuff and his ongoing Artistic development is legendary. He is a giant in comics in my opinion.
I love this video. I always thought that the John Higgins colour worked because this book is set in Joker's own territory, inside the fairground funhouse so it makes sense that the colourway reflected that. I can see why he'd want it to be his vision though. Great video, Brian seems like a lovely man.
i read this one either at the library or at barnes and noble when i was like 14... when youre younger its like you almost don't know how hard something is supposed to hit you, but looking now, its some brutal stuff. incredibly well done.
wow - that's a big one guys ^^ such a great artist. I have to admit I read the killing joke with Bolland coloring first - still prefer the 'original' - but it's not like with other books where I hate one version or think that one is far superior... for me it more shows that coloring can add another layer to a book and impact it profoundly in tone and atmosphere.
Fantastic episode. Hooked from start to finish. One of my takeaways from this was John Higgins original colours were actually pretty good in places. I like both and like many viewers, I'm sure, sat with both in front of me while watching.
I think I'm gonna watch this one like a 100 times. Bolland is an extreme wealth of information on how to make comic book art/or art in general. He has made art work traditionally in pen and ink, he has honed his technical skill... and he made that transition to digital. And STILL, he continues his craft as more and more technology (to create visual art) expands and evolves. He never stops learning, from others and from his past work. That is why he has always been my ideal artist, of any medium.
This is just incredible. Two hours of in depth talk about one of the greatest pieces of comic art ever. At no other time in history could you get this kind of thing. You'd be lucky to get a 30 second segment surrounded by bullshit. Love this channel
I absolutely love this show! Being able to hear the creators themselves giving a play by play, panel by panel is just so amazing. You guys are great hosts as well, you will ask questions and then step back and let your guests talk. That is the way to do it. While other channels will interview artists and writers, I can't think of any that have such detailed breakdowns of these timeless books.
This dudes a genius, i love full hand work, no ipads, Brian is an OG this man predicted the comeback of the high tight fade and can draw one better than your barber can cut one BIG UPS
Mr. Bolland could teach a Master Class on drawing Batman. Very few in the industry today can match his level imo. This is prob the best video/episode I've seen on this channel yet!
once again Ed and Jim, you guys serve your medium well as historians, critics and uber nerd fan boys. Sir Brian is clearly happy with the attention paid and your honesty in the analysis. Doing comic gods work on earth you two! much respect
This book was my introduction to Bolland, and I still absolutely love it as an example of comic book art. Absolute Edition is a must for the two different versions.
As a kid I got my hands on Batman Black and White reprint and that art changed my life. Brian's work stood out to me amongst few others. When those pages appeared I needed a moment or two.
Speaking of Tod Browning's Freaks, there's an adaptation of it drawn by Francisco Solano López (from the eternaut) that you guys should definitely check out
Thoroughly enjoyed the episode fellas. The page by page breakdown was so informative and enlightening. I am fortunate to have a 1st printing from my childhood collection & also the Absolute Edition which I could not recommend more. The inclusion of both colored versions and the script make it a real treasure.
One of my life missions is to grab up every comic issue... from DC, Image, etc. ... that has his art on the cover(and interior). Perhaps my most prized possession I got from a con years ago was the issue of Animal Man #1 signed by Brian Bolland himself.
You guys are killing it on this channel. Between this and Mark Millar’s channel, RUclips is more entertaining than comics. Love Brian Bolland’s art but I prefer Higgin’s coloring for the psychedelic aspect it brings to the story. I agree with Brian that is it garish at times, but it creates a rich atmosphere. Ready for more Peter Laird, whenever you have time.
I am a strange fan, as I first read the deluxe but still prefer the original coloring. I do understand how Brian was upset since it’s not what he pictured, however, his point that it’s supposed to be eraserhead, I still get that vibe with the original coloring. The “psychedelic” coloring is simply a “jokerized eraserhead”. I feel the monochrome coloring loses the impact that it’s supposed to have with the present to past transitions, I feel they’re much more powerful with the color. The coloring feels like a true joker memory and the black and white is like Batman telling the story rather than joker (in my opinion but the man himself hates it so it’s the George Lucas argument in comics!)
Excellent! I was there when Killing Joke hit and now I’ve the deluxe edition with Brian’s beautiful tones and color palette! He absolutely right about the bland color on the original book! When my deluxe copy I looked at the original and cringe! 👎It’s like looking at something in high resolution and clean and clear narrative ❤🎯! Camelot 3000 is one of my favorites from the early 80’s and these daze seems to be forgotten and that is unfortunate! You guys need to put that under the lense? Brian’s perspectives are always interesting and informative! Keep reading and making comix!🎯🔥⚡️❤️
Top! Thanks for posting. I totally had a nerd-fest here. I recall buying Killing Joke when it came out. Totally conflicted as I have an aversion to 'superhero' comics. But I grew up reading 2000ad with messers Bolland, Gibbons, McMahon, etc. so I picked it up. Still looks wonderful. Love the B&W pages. Was great to go through this in detail. Cheers chaps!
The first time I bought The Killing Joke, it came with the updated colors (I didn't know at the time). I couldn't put my finger on it, but something felt off and I couldn't get into the story. I later found out that I bought a recolored version. I managed to get my hands on an original colored version and MY GOODNESS it was so much better. The insanity and despair were infinitely better portrayed with the OG colors. I couldn't get enough of this comic. Same thing happened with Watchmen.
Another amazing video, catching up on these and each and every time it’s an enlightening and entertaining time. Thank you for the time and effort you guys put into these and keep up the great work 🙏
Do you guys think you can get Allen Moore to do a live video? I would love to have my Killing Joke signed and sketched by Allen and Brain . I just love the Killing Joke but I just wish Allen and Brain would do another book together.
Great episode. You keep raising the bar, guys. What do you (anyone out there) think if Higgins’ colours were printed on newsprint? Would they be less “garish”, to use Mr. Bolland’s term?
@@CartoonistKayfabe For sure. I mean more like the spirit of newsprint colouring, not the practical printing of Higgins’ work on newsprint. I’m imagining taking Higgins’ mindset and plan for colours, and translating it to 4-colour from the 64 colour palette.
I bought this book upon its release and thought I had examined and re-examined it a lot, but you guys put me to shame. It was one of the most anticipated books of 1988. I have mixed emotions about it, because I generally did not like the trend of more extreme and graphic violence entering into the world of my childhood superheroes. It was brutally jarring at the time. I always gave this one a bit of a pass because it was so well done (was about to say “executed”), especially Brian’s art. I first saw his art on a (now iconic) Green Lantern cover I bought in 1980, and even as a kid, it seemed super special to me. Just so meticulously detailed and realistic, and precisely proportioned. Unlike anyone else. “Camelot 3000” was a game-changer in American comics too. Thanks Brian, for being so generous with the Kayfabe Kings and all of us. I’d love to see you reunite to discuss any of your work, but especially “Camelot 3000” and your DC cover art, starting with that cover for GL 127. By the way, your references to Dick Sprang, culminating with showing us his gift to you was deeply touching to a lifelong fan of the both of you. Best regards!
I guess I'm one of the few who like John Higgins coloring over Brian Bollands (except for the flashback scene) ... Higgins brings the reader into a different world while Bolland's feels too realistic and uncomfortable. It feels like a video camera is recording the scene.
I've only read The Killing joke as an adult so I have no nostalgia, but the original coloring beats Bolland's own coloring a hundred times over. The original coloring is a stunning piece of artwork that elevates Bolland's art greatly.
This was great! I always had respect for Bolland but as I've gotten older his grounded, clear work is more appealing. Hearing him describe his work and approach in his own words has made me a fan.
Ed's face when Brian starts pulling out pages is priceless!

If only he did more what he calls interior work.Absolute genius
It is weird how they chose to make the the original coloured version ‘faux vintage’ by putting it on newsprint style paper stock whereas it was originally on better quality paper and a ‘deluxe’ book.

This fucking insane y'all thank you for this!! Whose next Michelangelo dissecting the Sistine chapel?
Speaking of Tod Browning's Freaks, there's an adaptation of it drawn by Francisco Solano López (from the eternaut) that you guys should definitely check out

Wow I bought the collection of his ‘The Actress and the Bishop’ strips yesterday. I know what I’m watching tonight.

As always bringing the fire…insane work thanks so much!
Cool ep! I must to say that I rather prefer the original Higgins color...
What a great episode! Thanks!!!
Absolutely incredible. Well done, sirs. Well done!
Towards the end, is that an automatic spinning rack? Or did someone sneak up and spin it a bit? Great interview guys. Thanks!
Wow! - Amazing Interview & Analysis , Killing Joke isn't just a comic book, but a masterpiece of art / literature
Wow! Brian ( and Ron Smith / Kevin O’Neill) made my teenage years. Thanks guys!
Seeing the original artworks was so amazing. This show is a golden mine!
Just ordered an Absolute Edition online. Looking forward to revisiting this masterpiece.
Another amazing video, catching up on these and each and every time it’s an enlightening and entertaining time. Thank you for the time and effort you guys put into these and keep up the great work 🙏
Wow! Great episode to wake-up to!🎉😊
Well, that was an unexpected gem. I love the transitions and I definitely prefer Brian's colour palette to my gaudy version.
That was one hell of an insightful journey. Such a masterful Artist.
Do you guys think you can get Allen Moore to do a live video? I would love to have my Killing Joke signed and sketched by Allen and Brain . I just love the Killing Joke but I just wish Allen and Brain would do another book together.
Top comic artist bar none. More magician than artist! Thanks for the video 👍
This is great. I love this style of video from you guys. And yes, I immediately purchased the Absolute edition.
super cool episode its really one of those episodes that you really have to watch, not just listen while doing anything else.
Just to add to the chorus - Go check out Carol Day by David Wright - stunning pen & ink work.
Great episode. You keep raising the bar, guys. What do you (anyone out there) think if Higgins’ colours were printed on newsprint? Would they be less “garish”, to use Mr. Bolland’s term?
Blueline colors look brutal on newsprint. They’d be muddy, for certain.
@@CartoonistKayfabe For sure. I mean more like the spirit of newsprint colouring, not the practical printing of Higgins’ work on newsprint. I’m imagining taking Higgins’ mindset and plan for colours, and translating it to 4-colour from the 64 colour palette.
I would LOVE a "Batman year 1" edition of killing joke with a Higgins and Bolland coloring included!
Ed Piskor is the most natural conversationalist on the web

Every time I look at Brian Bolland’s work I get simultaneously excited & slightly annoyed with envy lol. Either way it makes me want to draw lol.
Was not expecting this
This is the best dissection yet. The more Bolland on this channel, the better!
Excellent interview!
The patience it takes for this. Wow!
Thank you! Amazing!
Hello! Just wanted to say that in 19:58 it says joker in greek ( τζόκερ)
Every time I contemplate Mr. Bolland's art, I start cussing after a while. Jesus Christ, it is breathtaking.
It's funny: I would never have thought of "Eraserhead" as a reference, but knowing it, it makes sense.
This was great! I always had respect for Bolland but as I've gotten older his grounded, clear work is more appealing. Hearing him describe his work and approach in his own words has made me a fan.
Also, that wicker texture, man.
Brian Bolland is one of the successful comic book artists of all time. His work on The Killing Joke still stands.
The Killing Joke is my favorite comic and it's a great Joker story and I have 10 NM copies of it. I would like to have one signed by Brian and Allen.
This is so cool to watch. 👍
LEGEND.
What a treat.
GOLD STANDARD !
9:34 awesome call back to the terrible trio
What a treat!
I LOVE this one!!
He's up there among my favourites...Alex Ross and John Bolton.
Amazing episode
