PSA: Effective September 12th, 2024 GM has implemented software blocks to prevent the use of cloned MDI devices with its Techline Connect software. This applies to both GDS2 and SPS2. If you are experiencing an E4214 error, this is more than likely caused by the use of a clone MDI or MDI2.
Finally someone that knows how to explain things correctly and fully. Your knowledge is impressive, he understands all aspects of auto electronics as well as even linux programming, Jesus. You have the ability to be the best online educator I've ever seen.
Awesome video! not a pro mechanic here but did take the T2 toyota classes to work on my own cars (only had toyotas) until wife wanted a GMC Acadia. I don't want to pay almost $300 to dealer to clear a "Service airbag" message and to recalibrate throttle position angle (just cleaned/replaced pcv valve and had to purchased a "program to vin" BCM from midwest). I keep good maintenance on my vehicles to last until they yell back at me "let me go"...but I don't want to spend $3k on an Autel either...I knew about the AC Delco TDS but didn't occurred to me to buy a chinese knock off MDI...I didn't even know they were reliable...again...thanks a lot...you just save me tons $$$. Cheers!
This is a hugely helpful video. I've been trying to figure out how to reprogram a radio from another vehicle, and there's so much information out there that I'm having a hard time compiling it into something useful, and this gets me one step closer.
Good day and happy new year. I just started to research the purchase of an MDI for GM vehicles. Your video has been so very helpful. I am hoping there is more you can share in a one on one.
Awesome! Thank you for doing this for us. I need to get one in order to reprogram the transmission tehcm on my 6L90. You've helped me to see how it works and that you can buy one of these and get it working. I'm encouraged with what I know now enough to move forward. I don't want to have to pull parts back out of the trans in order to let someone else program it.
can you help . what is the polarity of the 12 volt power adapter is it center pin + or center pin negative - I just purchased one of these units but no info on the power adapter
Followed your directions to the letter. I have it recognizing the usb every time. Do you have a video for the wifi set up? I tried setting it up, and in settings while connected to usb wifi is active once I disconnect it doesn't seem to find it. Not a deal breaker but a great convenience. Edit... Figured it out. Oddly updated Windows 10 and it started working. Thank you for your content.
I only use wired Ethernet, or USB, myself. I don't trust the old "g" WiFi for SPS at all. ;-) But the Wifi is also setup thru the MDI Manager app, under the network setup tab, and under the Wifi tab from there. Be sure you are running the latest version of the MDI manager and firmware from Bosch (link in the description). To setup tick the _Enable wireless interface_ checkbox, and tick the _Obtain an IP address automatically_ checkbox. Then click the _Access Point_ button. Select your networks SSID from the box on this screen (click the refresh button if its not showing). The CF WiFi adapter on the MDI and clones is only 802.11g, an older standard. So be sure your WiFi access point/router is setup to allow this if it's not showing up. After selecting the SSID then click the _Configure_ button. Did you get this far in your previous attempt?
Binge watching your videos great stuff. Love your use of clones, bench harnesses ect ...would like more videos on the tech 2 tis 2000 dos and donts of bricking and programming gm body modules ect. by the way forscan is a great program for Fords
@DrShock If you were looking for a MDI now in 2021, where would you look? I'V spent time looking for clues, like you suggested. However, it looks like everyone is using one of 3 or 4 "stock" image sets.
Do you know wherher / how well the MDI clones work with other manufacturers' tools for J2534 programming? Have you tried it with Ford or Nissan, or run across anyone who has?
Likely failed the self-test, but not in a critical way. You might try doing a firmware recovery to both reformat the internal SD flash card and refresh it's file system. It could be that the SD card is failing, so it's having trouble reading what it needs to load when booting up.
Hi DrShock, So I have been using with success a VCX Nano cable running Windows 10 with my 2012 GMC Sierra. My wife just bought a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox for which this cable does seem to work using GDS2 on the same laptop. In your opinion, would I be better off using the existing VCX Nano adapter only with my older vehicle, and use this newer MDI cable for anything newer? I tried to install TechConnect Live on the laptop to use SPS2 to update the calibration on her car, but it overwrote alot of the VCX's files and would not work. I do not really have an issue for dedicating another older laptop to have 100% functional MDI just trying to save money.
I think your Nano is fine up thru around 2020 or so (whenever GM switched over to the new architecture that requires the MDI-2 tool and even the original MDI is no longer supported for). Just a few months ago GM phased out TIS2Web and rolled Techline Connect out to non-dealers at www.acdelcotds.com (I got surprised by this upgrade doing a cal update for someone here recently), and that is a very different implementation than the older TIS Java applet one. So you'll need to go back to VxDiag and ask them when they will publish files that support the new Techline Connect. They might plan support, in which case you could stay with the tool you already have right.
@@DrShock Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking if I am going to stick with GM vehicles going further (not impressed with our '18 Equinox) that the MDI device may be a better option. I am awaiting a response from China in regards to the VCX Nano and Techline Connect.
@@DrShock So attempting to reflash the BCM module on the '18 Equinox I had bad results with the VCX Nano and TechConnect. Ending up needing the dealer to reflash the corrupt module calibration which they did with ease, and the technician knew right away I had a VCX Nano. Now, I am going to try and find the latest/greatest MDI clone online. I see that the new WiFi clones have a F1 and F2 button as well as the power button? Also, when programming a vehicle do you leave the 12V/2A adapter plugged into the MDI when it's plugged in to the OBD port also getting 12V from the vehicle?
@@justinledoux4938 Unfortunately, with GMs move off of TIS2Web to the new Techline Connect software late last year, it's no longer reliable or compatible to use the Nano with GMs tooling, though there are other J2534 alternatives to the MDI/MDI2 out there that are. But the clone MDIs are 100% fine (I am using Techline Connect myself regularly). When SPS programming you have to have the battery on a standby power supply (*NOT* a battery charger) - ruclips.net/video/8WPYDN4b9i8/видео.html and you have to run the J2534 cable (i.e., the MDI) off the OBD2 power with the key on (engine off is typically also needed). I would recommend to not use the AC power adapter when doing an SPS calibration, nor would I recommend using WiFi. Either USB to laptop, or wired Ethernet only for SPS calibrations to avoid drama.
So how can we actually recognize a good clone from a bad-quality knockoff? unless it arrives, it seems like we cannot verify what S/N it has, nor if it beeps in certain moments.
I believe I mentioned in the video that the lower quality clones omit the circuitry for the WiFi module. It's an ancient 802.11g type, so nothing you would typically use nowadays, but a good indicator that the original MDI board was copied exactly rather than corners being cut.
Can you tell me if I can change the TPMS trigger ranges programmed in the ECU? I switched the OEM tires/wheels and run with aftermarket in the winter, then back to OEM only when I haul a load. The OEM tires were 70psi and my aftermarket tires are only 50psi max. Driving around with the sensor on all the time is annoying and I'd rather not visit the dealer 1-2 times a year and pay to do it.
I have not personally performed such a procedure, but both the Tech2 and MDI are capable of this for the model years they support coupled with a current GM ACDelco TDS subscription. It is a BCM function as best I recall. You would have to google around to see the menu flow, but I suspect you will be limited to the tire sizes GM originally sold on the particular vehicle.
Hello what do you think of the new interface 2 with the laptop ready to us with wifi I’m a beginner so I’m seeking your help on this please great video love your knowledge thank you for sharing
The MDI itself is just a J2534 class physical interface from the personal computer to the vehicle. All the functionality comes from subscribing to GMs Techline Connect over at www.acdelcotds.com
MDI came out back in 2007, and is a proprietary GM design like the Tech2 that came before it and the MDI2 that came after. They can emulate J2534, but are were never intended for use by consumers so can't call it a "replacement". The other way around would be more accurate. MDIs are supplied to all GM dealer techs as part of their standardized service bay tooling for use on GMs proprietary diagnostics and service software. They just happen to be obtainable by shadetrees now due to the China cloning factor.
Hey, do you maybe know how to program the eSIM from a Onstar Modul Gen10? In the end of 2020 Onstar will end in Europe. So, 1,5mio cars can’t use the WiFi or the SOS call anymore.
Can this device program and code fuel injectors and glow plugs on a 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 l5p duramax? Can this device do a manual dpf regeneration for that same vehicle?
This is an _exact_ clone of the Bosch designed MDI device used by all GM dealers. If the functions you are looking for are part of either the GM Service Programming System (SPS) or the GM Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS2), then yes. Both of these functionalities require paid subscriptions to GMs www.acdelcotds.com technical information services, just like the GM dealers do. The tool by itself does absolutely nothing, the software is all in the cloud with the GM model.
@@DrShock This is great! Thank you for the very detailed video and your quick reply to my questions! And thank you also for being so precise with your information! I will definitely be looking forward to more of your videos!
little confused here.. if I were to buy a clone MDI that comes with software in HDD for the purpose of diagnostics on a 2007 (specifically viewing CMP, CKP sensor & activating solenoids) .. will i still need to buy GM subscription or is that only for flashing?
Those HDDs are included for a hacked copy of Tech2Win and/or GDS2. But SPS cannot be ran offline like that, so for flashing gotta go to www.acdelcotds.com. Also GM is constantly changing GDS2, so depending on the model year, the HDD version may not work and so a sub of that at the same site is often required.
So I just bought a clone MDI2. Worked fine out of the box with Tech2Win for my gf's 2009 Saturn Sky Redline. HOWEVER......full stop on my 2002 Camaro. Would not communicate with the vehicle. I had a similar issue a while back with a cheap cheap ELM327 OBD dongle.....apparently it cannot talk to older J1850/Class 2 bus cars. Purchased a BAFX dongle and it worked fine. I wonder if these clones have the same problem. I'm disappointed because I purchased the MDI to be able to program the PCM in my Jeep swap through SPS, which is from a 2002 Silverado.....and I'll have the same problem. Wondering if you or anyone else has come across this with these clones?
I've not tried to use an MDI on anything older than 2009 as I also own a Tech2 that I use on anything older. But out of curiosity I looked at the ACDelco website and I don't see them calling out any model year limitations for the MDI (though it only came out in 2008). It may be more of a limitation of the Tech2Win emulator though. Here's the long list of exceptions for Tech2Win that may help explain what you're hitting as the UART rows would be bus communications related - www.boschdiagnostics.com/pro/sites/pro/files/Tech2Win_exceptions.pdf
@@DrShock It's definately not Tech2Win.....it worked perfectly on the same car when I had the VXDIAG Nano. And I have both T2W versions on 2 laptops....the Vxdiag version on one, and a fresh copy from GM (my neighbor is a tech so he lets me use his TIS login). Neither work with the MDI2 clone. Very odd indeed.
I am now trying to decide between the MDI and the VCX NANO. Can explain what the advantages to this over the nano are? Is it just the maneuverability of the device and how it’s plugged into OBD port? Or are there more is the hardware inside more advanced?
Personally I only own the Tech2 and MDI, both as high quality knock offs from China. The VCX Nano is going to be a low cost generic type J2534 pass-thru tool that you can also use with acdelcotds.com like the MDI. The real Tech2, MDI, or MDI2 are going to be priced far outside the reach of individuals or even smaller shops. The clone MDI is usually going to be under $300. The Chinese clone MDI2 is not an exact one, it's just the MDI board in an MDI2 case currently so I would not recommend it over a regular MDI clone. Hopefully a more exact copy of the MDI2 will come out at some point for individual owners. My understanding is the MDI2 is needed for GMs global B architecture vehicles that started coming out in 2020. For just doing SPS or Tech2Win the VCX Nano has a good track record from what I've seen in forums, once you get it's drivers setup with the GM software. I haven't really came across anyone posting about using it with GDS2 though, but that doesn't mean it would have a problem. Just I can't comment on it.
@@DrShock Okay, perfect, so that was my next question, the MDI 1 will cover me up to 2019 with the proper software of course, and as far as the windows it just has to be windows 7 64 bit or newer I’m guessing??? And thank you again for all this information! I’m just trying to make sure I do my research, and you seem very knowledgeable about this device!
Yeah the MDI is a good solid tool matching closely what th GM dealers use, but the Nano is cheaper if that's a concern. Glad to help, I don't work for GM or anything, just an engineer with a hobby around automotive electronics and a YT channel for that. ;-) MDI2 link here - gm-techlink.com/?p=12656
Nope, still working great. Like I mentioned in the video, the one I showed is an _exact_ 1:1 copy of the real tool. Handles absolutely everything in GDS2, SPS2, and Tech2Win flawlessly. But the build quality is typical Chinese, they are _not_ rugged at all. Drop one, and it'll probably be DOA. Leave it out in a hot truck for the day, and it'll probably be DOA, etc. BTW, these MDI clones are no longer in production. The cloners have moved onto clones which _falsely_ claim to be MDI2, but they are just these same MDIs in a different shape of circuit board. Still good MDI alternatives, just not MDI2 at all.
i really enjoyed your video and have read alot on the seller sites for clones and different youtube videos but i can't seem to get a straight answer on which one i would need . My newest vehicle is a 2008 GMC Sierra 2500hd lmm Duramax and i would love to be able to trouble shoot/ program with the GM device . My Dad has a 7.5 GMC Sierra 1500 nbs that i would also like to be able to diagnose / program.. which of the devices would i need ?? tech 2 or Mdi ?
A 2008 is "too new" for a Tech2 and the old TIS2000 DVD style programming. But you could still use a Tech2 (or the Tech2Win emulator) for most vehicles thru around 2013 with TIS2Web (the online subscription style programming) instead (see my pass thru programming videos). Past model year 2013 you must have an MDI device. Here's a GM link with a table to help explain further, when it says GDS2 it's talking diagnostics rather than SPS programming but the model year comparison is the same, www.acdelco.com/content/dam/acdelco/na/us/en/index/tis2web/02-pdfs/acdelco-tis2web-2019-scan-tool-chart.pdf
@@DrShock so just so i am 100% understanding if i buy a MDI which is backwards compatible to older Gm vehicles with the emulator software i would still need to buy he 3 day 55$ access to do something like changing the tire size on a 2008 or newer vehicle . I understand that if i reprogram anything or replace a module it will require the 3 day access but would it also on a tire size change ?
So when you look at the subscription options on that ACDelcoTDS website, there are several: for programming (that's the SPS one), for GDS2 (that's a diagnostics capability that can be downloaded onto the MDI and its different for light duty and commercial vehicles), and for Tech2Win (that's the Tech2 emulator capability that can be downloaded onto the MDI). The other purchase options are either bundles of these, service manuals, or the firmware that is flashed onto the physical Tech2's PCMCIA type adapter card. That all said I'm not familiar with the procedure around tire size changes with an MDI, but with the Tech2 you had to set the tire size for both the PCM and the ABS module separately (I do see at least two youtube videos on setting the tire size for the ABS module with the Tech2, you might watch for example). Was not able to find any info on doing this with the MDI so really cannot advise you on whether it would be SPS or GDS2 (though I suspect its in GDS2). Suggest calling ACDelcoTDS tech support as a pre-sales question for what you should subscribe to to get this.
You're referring to running the Tech2Win app thru the MDI (or any J2534 adapter). I don't have such a video because I own an actual Tech2 scan tool. The menus and use of Tech2Win are the same since the app is actually running the scan tools firmware as an emulator. So other than the initial installation and setup, all the use cases are the same as the Tech2 itself.
The MDI would cover them all, though you'll have to pay for a subscription. After 2008 GM stopped doing software you could install on your PC, and instead when to more of cloud hosted model with www.acdelcotds.com
@@DrShock Thanks. My daughter's 2014 Acadia is having an intermittent no crank issue (like all of them) and I figured I'd get the MDI to start running down the modules to try to find the issue. Thanks again.
The only MDI2 clones I've seen are good cosmetic cases of an MDI2 surrounding just an MDI type device inside. In some forums folks have posted that these devices are not recognized as anything more than an MDI. Someone has a Spanish language video on here showing that the insides are really just the MDI clone cut shaped and board reworked to fit the MDI 2 casework. If you are looking to buy one I'd be looking for it to have the real Ethernet port on it, and taking a USB dongle for the WiFi like the original GM MDI 2 does as a way to cut out some of the low quality knock offs. Not sure the MDI 2 clones are good enough to buy yet.
There's a link in the description to the MDI I reviewed. But I've not seen a _true_ MDI2 clone out yet. What's out there now are just the same clone MDI1 circuit boards adapted to fit inside a clone MDI2 plastic case. Thanks to ECUFix who went over this here ruclips.net/video/GFSiQFKukLA/видео.html (though this vid is in Spanish you can see the circuit board details he's pointing out in that the MDI2 clones are only MDI1s and may not correctly support the future Global B platform vehicles like the real MDI2 would).
Hey Dr. Can you talk about minimum system requirements for the PC needed to use the MDI with SPS. I see a system requirements page on the ACDelco TDS site but that is more geared toward the minimums the system must be in order to get technical support from them. I want to know the minimum needed to actually run the programs and TDS site successfully. On some of the MDI clone listings they say Windows 7 minimum. Should we trust that? Any insight? Thanks!!
Those requirements have been updated by ACDelco since the video was made, I am running Windows 10 now for example. But they still mandate only the 32-bit Java runtime. gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/Aftermarket%20Infrastructure%20Guideline%20v1.0.pdf
By SAS I'm going to presume Steering Angle Sensor is what you mean here. I haven't worked on Caddys, but your question got me curious. I came across this service bulletin for your specific car that happened to mention relearning the SAS using GDS2 - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/MC-10111916-9999.pdf So I would infer from that bulletin that yes, the GM MDI is a suitable tool but only with a GDS2 subscription. This is different than SPS (you'll see all of these at www.acdelcotds.com).
And currently there is only one US seller on ebay that has a MDI clone with Wifi and he does not show any pics of the board. He is at about $325 is that the range we shoudl expect for a model similar to yours?
That's about what I paid a few years ago. You might ask the seller to share an internal pick to confirm he's selling the high quality version, but typically if its got the removable CompactFlash type 802.11g WiFi adapter card it's almost always the right version.
If you're asking about the tool - a Tech2 doesn't support anything that new, so it has to be an MDI (aka MDI1). The MDI2 becomes required only starting with select 2020 model year vehicles.
This is an older video. Both the Bosch download link and the eBay link in the description are still correct but I did freshen up the search terms thx. Note that these original MDI knock-offs have been out of production in China since Covid and I don't think they will be coming back. That search link is correct, you just can't get them other than used or as surplus stock from the sellers in China now. Scroll down within those eBay search results and there are several offering this older model (I just verified this). What they are making now is a _quasi_ MDI 2 type clone. The MDI2 clones that also show up at these search links are actually the exact same circuit design internally as the MDI 1 clones, just modified to cosmetically look like an MDI 2 and fit into that hour glass shape blue plastic case. The MDI2 clones are *NOT* accurate copies of the MDI2 though and GM software will only recognize them as an MDI. They lack support for several of the new protocols GM has been introducing since the 2020 model year. But they work fine for 2019 and earlier as an ordinary MDI, as well as carry over designs that were unchanged past MY 2020.
When you see those "HDD" options it's not the Bosch MDI manager they are talking about. The Chinese sellers are offering a hacked/pirated copy of GMs GDS2 and Tech2Win software running on a hacked up Windows system to defeat GMs subscription license/lease protection scheme (hence why they are selling the whole hard disk drive with it). GM's GDS2, Tech2Win, and SPS2 are not free, they are subscription based services. You can often sub for just a weekend for only around $30. While the Chinese have hacked GDS2 and Tech2Win they haven't found a way to do that for SPS/SPS2. So those HDDs are a waste of money for module programming, you have to buy that as a subscription from GM only. But for just diagnostics, and only the older vehicles that the hacked versions support, it can be useful.
This unit does absolutely nothing without a paid subscription to GMs ACDelco TDS service. It's like a "dumb" client device. You can pay for diagnostics or device calibration updates (flash updates), or both. But without paying, it does nothing. All outlined in the video.
I have a question about the MDI module. I'm trying to replace my ABS module on my 95 Pontiac Sunfire. I have the original GM Tech 1 with the mass storage cartridge. As I understand it I can't replace my abs module with a new one because they are VIN encoded. If I get the MDI module to reprogram a replacement module. Do I still need the Tech2Win software as well? I could not find any straight forward information on this anywhere. Thanks
I don't recall if the ABS module on the J-cars from 1995 was actually VIN coded or not. But let's presume it is, then you could use a Tech2 with TIS2000 on DVD to access the service programming system (SPS) to accomplish this. This would be the preferred route for a 1995 if you have the tools and software. I show that path in this vid - ruclips.net/video/Nr_eYexAAV4/видео.html If you do _not_ have TIS2000, then you'll have to use the current GM Techline Connect with SPS2 (which replaced TIS2Web and SPS last year) that unfortunately no longer supports the Tech2. You'll have to have an GM MDI, or compatible J2534, interface to use this software. And you'll have to pay per VIN to use it at www.acdelcotds.com. It's very affordable though, with a 2 year SPS2 subscription running under $50 currently. The MDI also supports running the Tech2Win emulator for Windows PCs for diagnostics purposes only, which is a separate subscription from ACDelco TDS.
@@DrShock I believe the abs computer is VIN specific. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I bought one from a junkyard same vehicle, and a GM re-manufactured one. When I swap them out my GM Tech-1 can no longer communicate with either of them. The Tech-1 has an option to reprogram the module on my J-body, but it tries to connect to the module, and always fails. They both have a VIN sticker on the side of them showing their current VIN numbers. If I plug my original back in. My Tech-1 can communicate with it. I'm trying to replace my abs computer, because I believe is has an internal short in it which disables the abs system. I've already gone through the wiring harness and tested the ABS motor back as well. What do you suggest? Get a Tech2? Does ACDelco SPS still support the Tech2?
I don't have any experience using a Tech1, that's a tool from the 1980s! But the symptoms you describe seem to indicate there's a setup sequence missing in order for the Tech1 to communicate with the replacement ABS module (again I don't know if these are VIN locked but I would be *very* surprised if they were in 1995). Certainly the remanufactured one should be ready to go into programming mode. It would be a chunk of change to purchase a Tech2, even a clone. I would recommend calling around to independent shops (don't bother with the dealer most wouldn't be able to handle something this old imo) and ask if they have a Tech2, or a J2534 MDI type setup with Tech2Win, and can perform the ABS module SPS update for you. I doubt any third party tools could handle a 1995 J-car either, so it likely has to be OEM gear to succeed.
No, sadly not since last year. SPS was discontinued, and replaced with SPS2. Just the MDI, MDI2, or comparable J2534 interface. Tech2Win can be run over one of these, but only for diagnostics use, not SPS2. fwiw, I searched thru my docs and I cannot find any indication that the 1995 EBCM (electronic brake control module) was ever VIN encoded in that era. Typically modules of this era were not capable of field programming (no flash memory technology). I can't say that with 100%, you would need access to a 1995 J-body service manual to confirm. But thinking about your symptoms, I don't believe your remanufactured unit would be unable to communicate to the Tech1 even if it did need to be calibrated (i.e., flashed). This sounds like a different problem than an SPS one to me. Unfortunately, there's a dearth of technical info available for those pre-OBDII years online. Have you verified you have the correct part number for the reman unit?
No it turned out to be too much trouble, you have to embed/melt in the brass threaded insert into the clone case in order to screw the support piece on. And the support piece is just too expensive for what it does.
Thanks for your reply. You had mentioned using high quality clones of the MDI and Tech 2 in one of the comments below. I was hoping you might know of a vendor that has good clones of the Tech 2 aswell. Thanks, Mike
Newbie-Acquired the Clone, Downloaded The Bosch software, firmware updated, Logged in to TIS2web account. 1st- Question-2017 XT5 stuck in my driveway with "service Theft Deterent system" Keyfob buttons functions correctly, remote started 3 times and pressed start button and dies, and now locked, no start. Can I reprogram the System to match vehicle's Keyfob? 2nd-Question, I have 3 XT5s that I have (Auction buys) that have Airbags replaced but need SRS controller reset. Can this be done with TIS2WEB?
I'm not familiar with the first procedure, but I suspect it would be part of the GDS2 subscription on TIS2Web (not 100% positive so do your own additional research first). Perhaps someone with some more knowledge on this one will chime in and reply. One the second question, unless something has changed recently, to the best of my knowledge, GM does not provide any mechanism to reset an SRS SDM (Sensing and Diagnostics Module). The dealer body shop service procedure is to replace the SDM module with a new one (which you can then do a new module setup using SPS on TIS2Web). I have seen some ads for outfits where you can mail in SDM modules involved in an air bag deployment and they clear the crash data from the circuit boards storage chips by proprietary means. But nothing I'm aware of or have ever seen or read says you can do this with an MDI or Tech2.
Not working on trucks would be what they call fake news nowadays. I use my clone Tech2 almost exclusively on GM pickup and SUV trucks. If you get the high quality Tech2 clone, it works on anything a real Tech2 does. Of course, this video is not about the Tech2 but its replacement the MDI. But the same comments apply, you have to note the details as some MDI clones are just the plastic case with just a third party J2534 adapter wired up inside by some Chinese sellers. You want the ones with the double-decker circuit boards inside like the originals. As for 2006, that's a bit old for the MDI. It will work but it'll cost you on the ACDelco subscription. I'd suggest the Tech2 for that year, as it can be used without the subscription costs.
When using the tech 2 alongside the associated software, is it possible to program additional features from higher trims onto lower trims or is the program capabilities purely vin specific? If so, is there anyway around this?
It depends. Both on the year and the RPO affect the answer. The newer the vehicle model year the more controls there will be to prevent upgrading lower trim levels. Generally if you couldn't order it from the factory/dealer then the TIS2Web software will likely prevent you from doing it as these tools are GM dealer tools so GM was enforcing what they didn't want dealers doing. But not always, sometimes GM just put out Techline policies to not pay the dealers doing unsanctioned upgrades or put the necessary parts on a controlled purchase list where you have to return the old one to order the new one, to make sure things were not upgraded. Sometimes TIS2Web was updated, sometimes not. So it really depends and you'll have to do your research for the particular upgrade you are interested in, or give it a go as a pioneer and find out. Generally I've found the most success moving things "downtrim" staying within the same model year.
I just tried this, and the reprogramming failed and the device would no longer work. Inside is a cheapo SD card that apparently corrupts easily, I replaced that, repeated the reprogram, and it worked like a charm. Just thought I would mention it for anyone that may have thought they bricked theirs (like I thought I had).
Yeah, there are a few comments like this. Unfortunately the Chinese factory doing these went lowest bidder on those SD cards. Fortunately the Bosch MDI manager program will lay down a new copy of the embedded linux on a blank SD card along with the firmware update, if needed.
@@DrShock Thank you for the videos by the way! I am getting stuck on something that I don't see mentioned in the comments, I can connect to the MDI manager without issue, but when I launch SPS and go to the screen after it tells you to select vehicle types, it gives me a no connection error E4403 immediately. It is as if there is no active communication going on between the vehicle and the MDI box. Any thoughts?
Do you have the MDI selected as the device type vs Tech2 MDI2 or generic J2534? gm-techlink.com/?p=11972 Since you were able to reflash the MDI firmware SD card using MDI manager, I would not suspect the USB cable (and definitely don't attempt WiFi for SPS it's not reliable). Another cause for E4403 can be voltage drop (be sure you have a battery maintainer or second battery connected keeping 12.5V minimum) during SPS. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/MC-10114107-9999.pdf
Well that seems to be the problem then as it's not getting the communication right because the device isn't being set. You should always get the question about whether you want to reprogram an existing ECU, or replace an ECU like I show at 1:21 in ruclips.net/video/sUMJFwMuAkE/видео.html Since that is getting skipped too, and presuming you installed the right Java runtime for SPS, I would have to say you have some kind of installation or configuration problem on the laptop since that screen is not showing. I'd uninstall it all and let it start over _without_ the MDI connected. If it's still no go, you have ACDelcoTDS support since you're paying for a subscription here they will help troubleshoot it further.
So, for myself and I bet many others, this whole MDI and Tech2 scenario is new and very confusing. What is the relationship between the tech2win software and these modules. I acquired the tech2 win from the web (not easy to find). Is it something that works with the MDI? Would you still require a subscription to do anything to your vehicle? Some clarity would be really appreciated. Currently working on a GMC Acadia 2008 and it appears to need programming to allow replacing the throttle body. My hope when I first started looking at this was to buy a device that would allow me to diagnose problems (without a subscription) and figure out a course of action. Currently looking up DTC's gives you a range of possibilities and you have to try to decide which item to try first. Trying to eliminate guess work.
I have some other videos on the Tech2, basically there you use a DVD-ROM based software called TIS2000. It was phased out by GM in 2007 or so. You can continue to use a Tech2 with the acdelcotds.com website thru model year 2013 only, and only for some vehicle models. For everything else 2013+ its the MDI or MDI2. You can use the MDI on some earlier years using tech2Win software where the MDIs emulate the Tech2. You have to use the MDI to do SPS programming on 2013+ vehicles. Hope that helps along with checking out the other videos in the SPS programming series playlist.
Dr Shock - I have set myself up with the same MDI and downloaded GDS 2 after selecting a level 1 one month subscription. However, the Saab 9-5 NG is not covered, even though it is listed on the AC Delco site as being supported on GDS 2. Do you have any advice about how I get a Saab diagnostic package through GDS 2 ?
Great video on this interesting device DrShock! Two questions popping up here are about the power supply for this device and using it on my Hummer 2009 H2 and my 2013 Corvette: Does the device come with an power adapter or is it powered by the USB connection to the laptop/PC - if it doesn't have an power adapter - shich one is the right one for it to buy seperately? What software do I need for diagnostics/programming of my Hummer & Corvette? Thanks in advance!
its powered from the vehicle diagnostic port, the OBDII jack, using the communications cable. You can also power it from an AC wall adapter. The USB cable provides no power, just laptop communications. It comes with both cables but typically NOT the AC adapter. The device only works off a Java based web app, subscription based as shown in the video.
Hi, Thank you so much for your information. You come across as being very knowledgable. I have a Tech2 but recently purchased a 2013 Camaro that will need programming in the near future. Since the Camaro is Global A and supposed to be GDS2, I have a question for you. In reading the GM site, I see that the GDS2 needs either an MDI or a J2534-2 equivalent. Is the Tech2 with Candi not a J2534-2 equivalent? In other words, is there any reason that I can not use the Tech2 as the "J2534-2 equivalent device" to do the SPS programming? And use it as a "J2534-2 equivalent device" with GDS2 for diagnostics?
Idk if the Tech2 is a J2534 equivalent tool, since I have an MDI as well I've never needed to go down that route. But for some vehicles sometimes you will get connectivity options in SPS like "Tech2 Legacy J2534 Passthru" and "Tech2 J2534 Passthru" where you can use the Tech2 instead of an MDI. I have a video on one of these options here ruclips.net/video/53fho7l7yxI/видео.html . For GDS2 GM has a specific table of vehicles that will not work with Tech2 anymore here gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/GDS2_Supported_Vehicles.pdf
I have MDI clone together with a hard drive that contains GDS2 and Tech2. But it does not end successfully in the Recover option when clicking on Start Update. I have already tried it with the date of 2017.
If you're running from a hard drive copy only then its cracked / pirated rather than the live GM / ACDelco subscription software. But that won't have anything to do with updating the clone MDI firmware itself. So if you are sure you have one of the high quality clones (some clones are not compatible with MDI manager because they are not a full MDI copy), then I would suspect a USB connectivity issue (cable, laptop port, MDI port, Windows version issue). To eliminate this possibilty check that you can make config changes within MDI manager (like WiFi configuration) to test some of that connectivity out.
Thanks for your reply. The GM MDI Manager software together with GDS2 is on a hard drive ready to install on a laptop. That is to say, it has the Windows 7 64-bit operating system with all the information. I realized that when the MDI is connected, the Vehicle LED and Computer led light up one after the other. But the Check Led does not turn on. At the moment of crushing the button of the MDI for 15 seconds if it enters Recover mode the problem was that the Flasheo does not finish successfully. In the MDI it shows Version 8.3.103.39
Could be a bad SD storage card (internal flash) then. If you just bought this, I would contact the seller about this problem. Some of the MDI clone types cannot be updated. The latest official GM firmware is 8.3.103.117 available here - www.boschdiagnostics.com/pro/software-gm-mdi-and-mdi-2
I have connected the MDI to the computer without pressing any button on the MDI and this is not recognized by the computer. It is only recognized or appears when I keep pressing the MDI button for 15 seconds to enter Recover mode.
It should recognize just like I show in the vid, if it were me and these symptoms you're describing I would try a different laptop/PC if I had that option available, as well as a different USB cable. These sound like some type of communications/connection problem (ie, you cannot recover the firmware successfully nor can MDI manager detect the unit and show configuration panels from what you said). Some other things, make sure the USB device driver is installed correctly, the name is 'ETAS USB Remote NDIS Network Device' and you should see it listed under Network adapters. Connect direct to a computer port, do not use a USB hub (the MDI uses a fixed USB bus address and would be incompatible with them). Check that the MDI manager app is not blocked by your Windows firewall (since MDI manager communicates using network protocols over USB). Hopefully its one of these.
Yeah but with caveats. It's a "dumb" device, unlike the Tech2. So you can't do anything with it without also subscribing (ie, paying with your credit card) to the ACDelco TDS cloud software. GM charges separately for each function as well. So to get diagnostics, you have to subscribe to GDS. To get programming, subscribe to SPS. Etc. Think of an MDI like an adapter cable between your vehicle and the GM server in their cloud. Whereas the Tech2 was genuinely a handheld diagnostic computer and all you needed the TIS2000 CD for was the latest SPS calibration files. For an 03 I would stick with a Tech2, it was the top dog GM dealer tool wise thru 2007.
The Bosch software that installs on the MDI's internal storage just has a typical license to accept at installation. No fees. The GM TIS2Web offerings are fee based subscriptions thru ACDelco so you have to buy those licenses to do anything with the MDI and the vehicle.
Hi I've installed MDI and also payed for a online sps subscription it's loads up fine but then when it's asked to select the device MDI isn't listed only tech 2 remote any ideas thanks
ACDelco changed the UI late last year, this GM Techlink article goes over it. I am guessing this is what you are running into - gm-techlink.com/?p=11972
So I've just selected j2534 tool and then it goes to selecting a car model doesnt ask what j2534 I'm using , just tried without connecting to the car though would this make a difference at this stage ?
I've actually never tried without being connected to the vehicle when using the MDI. I'd suggest have the MDI USB to the laptop for the first time, and the ADLC cable connected to the OBDII port on the vehicle. It may be a one time setup sniff out.
Hi Doc, I’ve used a lot of scanners but not a Tech2 or mdi. I have a 2014 Cruze that has bad Blind Side sensor modules. When I replace them I assume the mdi can be used to program the the car to use the New modules? Thanks, your videos are very informative.
The MDI won't do anything without a paid subscription to GMs ACDelco TDS service. This is a dealer technician level tool, just cloned to be cheaper. Once that sub's in place though, if a GM module requires programming a calibration, yes the MDI plus the cloud based subscription service would be the ticket for a 2014 Cruze. I've not worked on a 2014, but I've programmed several module calibrations on a 2012 with this same clone MDI unit.
No, I haven't seen that error before. The Bosch MDI manager is a pretty simple Windows application, and it just installs a USB driver. If I had this situation I would delete the download of the MDI manager, use Windows control panel and uninstall the MDI manager, check Windows device manager and delete the ETAS USB Remote NDIS driver. Reboot Windows and then try re-downloading the MDI manager *only* from the Bosch link I've provided. No other sites are safe. As of today the file name version is GM_MDI-MDI2_Software_Setup_v8.5.33.53.exe and then re-run this to reinstall MDI manager on your PC. Then try connecting to your MDI clone. I regularly keep both of my clone MDIs firmware updated and always use the latest updates to Windows 10 as required.
@@DrShock thank you for your response. i did download it in a different lap top windows10 and it downloaded as you say. pretty easy. so ima try your suggestion on my lap top . mine however is a windows7
I have a real tech2. What subscription do I need to buy in order to connect my Tech 2 to my computer and download a snapshot. I tried a 3 disk set of TIS200(ebay) but could not get it to work.
After you capture on the Tech2, in TIS2000 you run the menu icon Snapshot Upload/Display. From this program select to upload a saved snapshot from the Tech2 to the Techline PC. This jargon is a bit confusing as you're actually _downloading_ not uploading. For TIS2Web (ie, acdelcotds.com) there's a GM service bulletin explaining what to do - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10116588-9999.pdf
Got it, well TIS2000 you _might_ find on eBay from time to time. Typically the Tech2 clones come with a _copy_ on DVD. If you're working with a 2008 or earlier vehicle, I'd recommend staying with TIS2000 as it's not an on-going subscription expense. For TIS2Web, I would have expected this to be part of an SPS subscription at www.acdelcotds.com but I don't see the "Snap" feature listed in my menu tab options anymore. I haven't used Snap in a long time from TDS until you asked. So I contacted ACDelco this morning, and they told me GM decided to remove that feature a couple of years back. Sigh, so I guess it's TIS2000 only pre 2008 only now.
TIS2000 should work just fine for snap viewing, as long as your target vehicle is 2008 or earlier. Also TIS2000 requires a kind of security dongle attached to the parallel or USB ports to function.
Aaron fwiw I got a mail reply back from ACDelco that actually the Snapshots feature is still available in TIS2Web, just moved to a Tech2Win subscription. I'd suggest calling to confirm that before purchasing it though.
So my MDI 2 doesn’t get recognized most of the time and it makes me put it on a recovery mode and update it all the time I want to use it . Any advice?
Hmm I’d guess either USB cable, USB port, or SD flash card. First and third pretty easy to check though be careful opening the case up with connectors to access SD
You could eliminate USB as the possible problem (cable & port both) by trying WiFi instead. I wouldn't recommend using WiFi for SPS, but for figuring out what's wrong it's an easy test. If it's the SD card you can replace with the same capacity and the MDI manager tool will reinstall the firmware onto the replacement flash card as part of recovery.
Dr Shock, I’m sorry to bother you again, but is it necessary to pay the extra money for one of these devices to include the 500 HDD that I’m assuming you have to swap out hard drives in your laptop? What’s the advantage to purchasing the HDD?
What's usually on those HDDs are pirated/cracked copies of older versions of GMs GDS2 and Tech2Win software. As best I recall a whole drive is needed to setup a virtualized Windows environment to trick the GM software into running at all. But these are going to be old GDS2 versions. Given GDS2 is revised _frequently_ by GM imo it's better to just do the 3 day rent at www.acdelcotds.com. For Tech2Win it may be OK.
@@DrShock I live in Canada so it's $56 for two years of one vin programing + $76 for Tech2win for three days of the ability to apply the programing and diagnosis. It is well worth the price to me. Just wish the OEM tool was the same price as the knock off.
Greetings! Thanks for the great videos! Just got my MDI. Seems to be identical to yours. I get 2 beeps error on boot up. Successfully updated firmware following your guide, but it still gives 2 error beeps. I cant find info on what the error code might be. Getting ready to diagnose what is probably a bad BCM on a 2016 Acadia Denali. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
If there is a problem during the MDI's self test, it will light up the red led on the front. If you are getting the red indicator, I would return the unit as defective for another regardless of the sounds. There are two "sounds" during power up, one "chirp" and then a "beep" that's normal. The chirp is for the power on and the beep is for the self test completing, I show this in the video though the chirp may be very hard to hear. So if you're hearing the two sounds at the same places I show, it's probably OK and just some defect with the part that makes the sounds on the board. If you've got two "beeps" at the end, but no red error led I've not seen that before but as long as no error led I'd give it a go reading data from the vehicle and seeing if it works ok. Then try something low risk like a calibration update on the radio or such. I definitely agree with where you're going here, that you don't want to brick a new BCM so test it out on safer modules first.
Hi Dr Shock, that MDI was so flakey that I sent it back. They refunded my money the instant I shipped it back on their dime too. I then bought one of those labeled as "2018 V". It works perfectly. The battery supply works "sort of" (not strong enough to boot up unit on) LEDs on Ethernet light up too, but I did not try or test connectivity yet. Wifi, USB, works good. Anyway, I discovered that the driver door button module was faulty. It was blasting the bus and annoying all the other modules. After many tries, rebooting, I did get an internal checksum error out of it. Strangely, after resetting it, it is working perfectly for the past few days, but I dont trust it. I'm ready to update all my software in the modules, and specifically want to adjust trans shift points. I think they messed them up when changing torque converter under warranty, previous owner. Any tips on programming? Setting shift points? Thanks for the thorough detailed videos!
I haven't heard of this "2018 V" so maybe the Chinese factories are trying to improve the design, that's good and I'll have to research that model. I don't have any advice on shift points as I run factory configs only, but on the programming best tip is make absolutely sure that you will have no interruption on power during the module updates. Clean consistent battery power is crucial to avoid "bricking" the module. Also if you're using WiFi, make sure it's stable and isn't going to crap out in the middle of the update op.
Thanks and I'll let you know how it goes. When I have more time, I'll try testing the ethernet and batteries. I suspect the batteries might work well enough to carry the MDI through a start cycle. Note that they just changed the TDS website to a new platform. I encountered that last night. After a few extra steps, all is working well on the new GM website.
So the tech 2 was for Saab etc this is for GM only. How much in total with the diagnostic software would someome spend on it? Excellent walk through. Thank you
Tech2 was for all GM vehicles as well. MDI replaced it completely. Subscription to Tech2Win service emulates the Tech2. Subscription to GDS2 required for diagnostics. Subscription to SPS required for calibrations. Each of these, as well as GM SI for the service manual information, can be had for small fees aimed at individual owners. It's all there on the website they provide - www.acdelcotds.com/subscriptions
MDI only works with GlobalTIS, not TIS2000. The latter is only for the older Tech2. An MDI can emulate a Tech2 using Tech2Win. But with the MDI, all of this software requires a pre-paid GM subscription as the software is in the cloud, not on the scanner.
My understanding on that topic is limited to earlier models say 2013/2014. And in those the answer I would say is not by itself. The updates were done via a USB module that is used in conjunction with TIS2Web SPS. This may have changed in more recent model years but back then you had to have the USB update images as well that the dealers are sent.
That's primarily what I'm looking to do. The vehicle I'm referring to is a 2013 Cadillac XTS. What do you recommend for updating this particular vehicle?
This service bulletin sounds like what you want, and for your specific vehicle. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2013/SB-10051941-5776.pdf I see it also mentions the USB update for CUE in addition to using an MDI to do an addition HMI module update for CUE. Personally, I don't know of another source for these USB updates than your Cadillac dealer.
@@DrShock my original ecm (07 Cadillac Cts) fried and I bought another ecm taken off another vehicle. I need to change the VIN on the replacement to match the vin of the car.
hi thanks for the video . my vehicle its 2004 (hummer H2) and for the longest i wanted to try a tech2 clone but not sure where to order mine from . i see you have a tech2 clone if its working good i would like to know the link where you ordered from . thanks in advance .
Links are in the description. This is an older tool though, so you have to do your homework, there's no specific seller for these since the pandemic set in, and there are good and not so good clones. Take what I've shared in this vid about what separates out the good quality clones from the rest, hit up he search links in the description, and match that up with what's available.
The year and model is supported according to the GM website - www.acdelco.com/content/dam/acdelco/na/us/en/index/tis2web/02-pdfs/acdelco-tis2web-2019-scan-tool-chart.pdf but can't speak for the specific function as I've not used one on a Camaro of that year.
I have had a tech2 for a while too and i use it with tis2000 to do sps programming. Do you know if i can use this instead. I am also wondering if the hard drives available for it can do sps module programming without a subscription. The mdi would be easier to use then dragging out the tech 2 and candi device. Thanks for your excellent video. The mdi is getting so cheap that it seems like a no brainer to go to rather then the tech 2.
Unlike the earlier Tech2, the MDI and MDI2 are just interfaces and do nothing on their own. You'll need a software subscription that then uses them as a J2534 interface between a laptop running Windows, and the vehicle. If you're using Techline Connect (a paid subscription service from GM at www.acdelcotds.com ) that works and is supported on Windows 10 for SPS2, GDS2, and Tech2Win. Anything else other than the paid subscription service is going fall into the Chinesium malware category and I wouldn't use it.
@@DrShock Thank you so much for the reply! I just bought a clone MDI from a US seller on ebay. I plan on following your process of putting it in recovery mode and flashing it with the real software. Then pay for my VIN on AcDelcoTDS. I'm in IT and fully understand the impact of Chinese malware. Nobody needs that mess! Thanks again for your great tutorial!
Hi Drshock! How are you doing? Well? I just bought this Best Chinese Clone by your advice. Tks. Now, do you know where can I obtain the Tech2win GM Brazil bin files? Tks so much. Leandro
When you purchase your Tech2Win subscription at www.acdelcotds.com you should be all set. I'm in the USA, and here it's $55 for a 3 day sub on Tech2Win which then downloads what you need to your laptop.
@@DrShock Tks so much!!! Here in Brazil this website does not open "Unknown error occurred. Please refresh page to try again". The only Acdelco page we can acess shows nothing about tech2win. With the hardware I bougth came a Tech2win and its working well, but without Brazil files, or I dont know to install it.
So Tech2Win is definitely not _free_ and is owned by GM directly. It may be restricted in some countries, but I am surprised Brazil would be one of them given I have seen a Brazilian version of the Tech2 PCMCIA card. If your MDI clone included Tech2Win that sounds like the seller definitely bundled a pirated copy. Your two options in this case are going back to the seller you bought the clone MDI from and asking for it, or google. What you're after specifically is the "Tech2 Opel/Vauxhall brazil bin version 184.000". The latest version was 187.000, but I think you'll find the older one easier to come by.
@@DrShock Yes, I asked the seller, but they are in 7 days holiday. . Im quite sure they dont have it. In Google, the only guy I found is this: www.ebay.com/itm/Tech2-files-for-PCMCIA-Cards-FULL-Set/184467637526?hash=item2af320c516:g:RTsAAOSwZfNfc23x but I dont know if it is reliable.
I know it is strange to ask but this is the only video I could find where it actually gave good information and now that my college is shut down I have to take online courses and I can't learn as well and half the videos my professor uploaded are out of date and I help run a study group and I really need someone who knows what they are talking about right now is this device a Generic scan tool, factory scan tool, or bluetooth interface? Please if you can help me I would be so grateful.
This vid is about a very accurate knock-off of a genuine GM dealership tool. It's GM only, not generic. No bluetooth, you can only use wired Ethernet, 802.11g WiFi, or USB 2. This particular tool is a paperweight without a paid subscription to ACDelco TDS, which is GMs cloud based subscription service for the service programming contents. The MDI can be thought of as nothing more than a commnications adapter for the TDS servers to reach the vehicle. Without a paid subscription, an MDI does absolutely nothing.
@@DrShock Thank you so much we have an entire section on these and they haven't mailed out our books yet and I am doing me best to still tutor some of my peers and it's a alot with the virus out and schools were not as prepared as they thought so thank you for your extremely helpful videos and I really am appreciative of your time with answering my question even if it may have been a little elementary of one.

There are many sellers on eBay which is where I would recommend. No particular link as I wouldn't favor one over the other for the same product, just look for the US based sellers advertising the MDI with WiFi (SQU brand WiFi card) as well as USB, and that the photos are looking like this one in the review. The photos that show a double decker kind of logic board inside are the same MDI as well.
It can do anything an GM MDI at the dealer could do. There are no known limitations with the high quality clone model as long as you PAY for the ACDelcoTDS software for it.
Yes on Windows 10, though TDS requires a specific level of Java installed to function. Yes on Opel brand, but you would have to check the acdelcotds.com website from your country to see if the Zafira is covered.
Hello Sir, Today is the first time I've watched your video. Today is Sept 29th 2023. I need to work on my wife's 2016 Buick Regal 2.0 Turbo to figure out whats causing it to hesitate around 2k rpm. My normal scan tool from Autozone isnt finding any stored codes. Theres no check engine light. Do you have a new link/links that will go direct to the correct device I can purchase and if any new info/link on what software is needed? I'd greatly appreciate your advice. We are supposed to leave out of town next Friday and I need to get her car running properly before we leave. Thanks for your time.
There's no one specific seller of these knock-offs. They come and go from individuals selling them either from China or having imported them from China. There are links in the description to get you to the right search results to choose from based on what the video went over to watch for though. Also note this is an older video, and this particular tool is no longer in active production so a bit harder to price shop for nowadays.
For a 2008 silverado, would I be better off buying the tech 2 clone or a vxdiag? I'm sure you have answered this question before, but out of all my own research I've done you seem to be the most knowledgeable when it comes to the clones. I appreciate your input as I've been searching for so long to get the right tool for the truck.
With it being a 2008, the TIS2000 software that you typically use with a Tech2 would be only partial coverage for module programming. As GM moved into 2009 they replaced TIS2000 with TIS2Web, a Java based type of cloud solution. And TIS2Web was itself replaced last year by Techline Connect. The Tech2 remained supported by all three though you lost some features, like remote mode module programming. The VXDiag route was always cheaper, but we all know what we get when we only look at the price. When Techline Connect came out, the Nano's stopped working. IDK if this has since been corrected by VXDiag, but it's the kind of periodic technical annoyance that I personally don't find worth saving a few bucks. My typical recommendation, is first half of 2008 and older, get the Tech2 clone and use it with TIS2000 (free). Second half of 2008 thru 2020 or so, get the MDI clone and use Techline Connect. You can do weekend subscriptions to GDS2 (diagnostics), Tech2Win (Tech2 emulator), and SPS2 (module programming), as needed. For certain 2020 and up vehicles only the MDI2 will cover it all, and there is no clone of the MDI2 yet. The ones being sold today are fake fakes, just a MDI2 case with an MDI1 board inside. They cannot actually do the new MDI2 protocols so are useless for the most recent vehicles.
@@DrShock that isnt true. mdi works fine with tis2000 i have used it with tis2000 to sps programming, you have to set a new Generic Pass Tru driver and select mdi as device to use. just as you would use the tech2 as passtru, and then u use mdi for sps with tis2000, and with tech2win for the rest. do as described here : first install mdi manager, to find the unit, close it, and then go to tis2000, 1. Click on the configuration drop-down menu and select IO Management. 2. On the IO Management screen, click DRIVER to add J2534 support to TIS. In the INSTALL DRIVER box, type or browse to c:\program files\cosids\bin\j2534.dll and click INSTALL. This will install the driver and bring you back to the IO management screen. 3. On the IO Management screen, click ADD to add the new interface. For the LOGICAL NAME type “Generic Pass Thru” and for Driver choose “J2534 Pass Thru Driver”. You must type the LOGICAL NAME exactly as shown with a single space between words and capital G, P, T. If you mistype even one character or miss a space it will not work! 4. On the IO Management screen select 'Generic Pass Thru', click PROPERTIES and choose a specific J2534 device. In the DEVICE NAME list choose YOUR J-2534 device. Return to this screen if you want to change to another J-2534 device later. 5. Close IO management and choose Service Programming System. Use the new GENERIC PASS THRU option as your diagnostic interface. i needed to install mdi manager on the same pc as the tis2000, before it could find the unit in tis, maybe because of the drivers.
@@thmolle I guess what I should have said is GM never formally supported this path (let's not forget this was a dealership tool not for use by the public). I realize near the end of the TIS2000 usage there was an attempt to offer a sort of J2534 third party tool compatibility that independent repair shops could use. This is the same kind of configuration mod that a VXNano might utilize to work with TIS2000. It was, and still is, a pita to get working. But unless you want to be investing your time massaging flaky things like this to work, I stand by the advice given earlier. Keep TIS2000 only with a Tech2 (and only on Win2K/XP), that is the smoothest trouble free use of the tooling so you can focus on repairs. For an MDI, I'd only use it with Techline Connect.
The sellers there, as well as on Amazon, come and go. Impossible to recommend a particular one that is valid for any length of time. So as I suggested in the video look for the characteristics of the higher quality MDI in the search results (includes the WiFi adapter, shows photos that look the same as shown in the video, and some sellers will include photos of the inside where you want to see the unique stacked logic board design the high quality MDIs have that match the original GM tool). There are also genuine MDIs that pop up on eBay from time to time that are sometimes a good price if you don't mind them being all banged up cosmetically.
You do not "need" the HDD part. That's usually a preloaded set of an older version "cracked" ACDelco TDS software on a Windows 7 bootable drive to avoid paying the subscription to GM. It's usually just GDS2 and Tech2Win plus the Bosch MDI Manager though, SPS tends to require the subscription as it's always getting updates from GM. I would not say this HDD being included discourages buying an MDI clone you're looking at, but I certainly would not plug a hacked Chinese boot drive into any one of my computers. Basically a buy but don't use it, or even a hey seller how much less if you don't include the HDD if you're planning on paying the subscription. The Bosch MDI manager itself btw is always free as I mention in the video.
You could go either Tech2 or MDI clone with that year and the clones themselves probably run about the same cost on eBay nowadays. The MDI would cost you more in the software subscription fees whereas the Tech2 can do alot all by itself standalone and doesn't need a laptop to function, or with the older discontinued TIS2000 CD software for SPS programming. Personally I prefer the Tech2 for 2007 and earlier for the free diagnostics capability. But the MDI is obviously the current tool and required for anything newer model year wise.
@@DrShock thanks so much for the reply! We replaced the BCM on this vehicle and need to flash it so we can get it started. Does that affect in anyway what you advised above?
If it's a brand new GM BCM then either tool will get you where you need to go to build the trucks options and configure the BCM, including any calibration updates. BUT, if its an used BCM, I've personally not gotten involved in that myself. I understand it can be more trial and error, mostly on the latter. You'll want to read thru the Chevy forums for your model year truck on what worked for folks the used part route before you choose the tool(s).
There are links in the description, but there are more than one seller of this tool. And not the same sellers as when this video was made. So just be sure to ask the right questions, ask to see the photos that highlight the features I went over and you should be fine.
I picked up the same unit on ebay... watched your video... hooked up the unit... On power up the unit beeped twice on the red led... is this a doa unit or can I do something to correct this. TIA
The red led is an internal error or fault, as long as you didn't unseat the WiFi CF card or otherwise open it up (they have little warranty indicator stickers on the case) then I would return it for another one. I have bought two of these, and I know of three other individuals who bought them near me all without incident for a long time now. But sht happens and I would put Chinese copy design above manufacturing process personally. They are good clone board designs, but the factories have defects from time to time (see my other video where I correct the factory RJ45 ethernet flaw). The beauty of buying on eBay, one of the few, is that you are 100% guaranteed a refund within the first few weeks of purchase.
Does these clones use Windows 7 and GM has updated their technical guidelines to windows 10 pro. My question is are you still able to use the clone with Windows 7 programming ECM‘s? If so up to what year thank you in advance. I am a new subscriber I appreciate any input on this subject
Like any other USB peripheral, these tools have no dependency on the PCs operating system. If GM provided a suitable driver, you could be using Linux or MacOS instead of Windows right. They work just fine with the latest Windows 10, as I have a pair and use them regularly in that environment. TIS2Web is gone though, replaced by GMs new Techline Connect tooling. Much better imo, no more Java dependencies. But that means you cannot use an MDI with Windows 7 anymore because Techline Connect does not run on anything but Windows 10. Now this is for SPS2 mainly, which GM has made pirate proof. If you happen to have one of the hard disk drives (HDDs) that the clone sellers often provide, then there would be hacked pirated copies of GDS2 and Tech2Win that run on the old Windows versions still. But for any newer vehicle, and anything SPS2 programming, you would need Windows 10 and a Techline Connect subscription.
For a clone I would recommend the MDI. It's the highest compatibility with ACDelco TDS SPS. The MDI2 clones are not that compatible yet, they are really just MDI clone circuit boards modified to fit inside fake MDI2 cases from what I've seen on eBay so far. The VCX nano is what you'll sometimes find inside a fake MDI case on the cheapest MDI clones. It's OK, certainly it works with TIS2Web, but this video is about the GM MDI and getting something as close to an exact copy of that tool, so I personally wouldn't use anything from VCX because it's not.
Hi friend! could you help me? I have an error with my clone mdi. When it start it take me 2 beeps. Could you know what can i do? I tried to recover with mdi manager but it not solved. Thanks
Sounds like a power on self test (POST) failure. Is the red error LED also on? I would suggest removing the WiFi card, if equipped as this can sometimes cause the POST to fail. Also power up without the DLC cable connected as well. Unfortunately there's no much information out there on how to debug such problems beyond basics like this.
DrShock no, it hasn’t equipped wifi card. But it happend then i changed usb port. I only have a problem when i try to connect a GMBrazil car with the tech2win, the connection with the PCM is fairlure. I think that my mdi lost a software piece. When i use with sps or gds2 its okay!
Tech2Win is only going to work on certain "older" vehicles PCM wise. You might insure you are running the GM Brazil version of the software as well. There's another YT video out there specifically on Tech2Win with GM Brazil support that you might want to ask this question on instead.
I'm trying to figure out what configuration to order. It looks like I need to get it with wifi based on what you said about it most likely being higher quality that way, but then there's an option for "with hdd" which is a hard drive with the software on it, but I see you say to purchase the gm software. So, if I order it "without hdd" option then it won't come with a hard drive and then the tool is useless? I don't know what I'm missing. obd2.market/product/gm-mdi-tech-3-diagnostic-tool-opel-vauxhall/
Getting with WiFi helps weed out the lower quality clones that in some cases are just some USB type scan tool inside an MDI clone case. Another tier above that is an actual MDI clone, but with circuitry omitted (including WiFi) to reduce cost, which is some cases affects compatibility. But these sellers adding a HDD are new since I did this video, in those they are including pirated/hacked copies of GMs GDS2 diagnostics and the Tech2Win emulator. If you are looking to do SPS programming, this option won't help you as you'll still need the TIS2Win subscription. Hope that helps.
@@DrShock that helped clear up what I was wondering. So if I get one with hdd, then I don't have to purchase the GDS2 and Texh2Win softwares, but then I wouldn't be able to program any modules, I would only be able to read diagnostics and make commands to the modules? If I wanted to program the modules would I only need to buy the $40 vin access? And also if I get a wifi version can I still use it with usb instead?
Wifi or USB or even wired Ethernet on the highest quality clone yep. The two year program for SPS is $40 per VIN still yes. And on the GDS2 diagnostics and the Tech2Win emulators on the HDD, yes that's my understanding though I have not personally used either of these hacked versions. Bear in mind the hacked versions are point in time, so down the road for a newer vehicle the diagnostics would probably not work for you and you would have to buy a sub at that time.
Did you have any issues with the drivers? As soon as I connected it to the computer and drivers was installed successfully, I am still getting "X" on the manager, looks like the MDI is not recognized. However I checked the driver installed and it is ETAS usb remote NDIS Network device. Any idea what the issue could be or if you could share your drivers? I am with windows 7. Thank you!
There are no separate drivers, it's all built into the one and only MDI manager package available from Bosch that I mention in the video. If the device is not found at all on USB I would first disable any antivirus or malware programs for diagnostic purposes, and make sure the Windows firewall is not blocking either the MDI manager or MDI Identification Service from communications. It's a fairly simple protocol to just detect the device, presuming you do not have a defective USB port on the MDI. Also it has to be USB 2.0, not older.
The AC adapter is the one that came with my high quality Tech2 clone, it is 12VDC 2A which matches what the original MDI specs were. Both tools have the same size female barrel connector for DC power.
No, this is a cloud connected device and requires a paid subscription to GMs software at www.acdelcotds.com. For a 2005 get a Tech2 clone and the software comes on DVD-ROM instead.
@@DrShock what about a 2011 Saab 9-5 NG ? Can I use the Tech 2 and the Global TIS software on a windows 7 virtual machine (using hyper-v in windows 10)?
@@lyfhalvorsen3598 The Tech2 in the USA software (TIS2000) had it's last updates only thru model year 2007. The Tech2 itself only goes up to 2013, but there's very few models that includes and all are carry overs models released several years prior (for example Chevy Cobalt came out in 2005 but ran thru 2010 so Tech2 w/CANdi covers all but TIS2000 only thru 2007).
@@lyfhalvorsen3598 In the case of TIS2Web (www.acdelcotds.com) you gain the additional SPS years out to 2013 (but the same carry over model only language applies). Here we see GM says the MDI GDS2 is the tool to use for the Saab 9-5 since 2010.
While I personally don't have a problem with saving money as a non-business going with a knock off hardware device, I have always paid GM for their software. I have no experience with pirated content and cannot help there.
This is a high quality clone of a GM dealership tool, so it only supports vehicles in the GM family of brands. Here's the list of vehicles supported by GM gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/GDS2_Supported_Vehicles.pdf
No, the MDI clones only come with a GM ODBII connector cable. You would need a Tech2 which has the correct adapter, or ideally a Tech1 for a pre-1996 model.
Cheers!
Thanks!
Feel free to comment here if it's related to the video. There are other MDI videos out there you should perhaps watch first though.
I have been wondering about the GDS2 clones, thanks for the info. Subscribed!
Thanks for showing us how it's done correctly.
can you help . what is the polarity of the 12 volt power adapter is it center pin + or center pin negative - I just purchased one of these units but no info on the power adapter
12VDC @ 2A, center positive on Tech2, MDI and MDI2 clones
Would be great if you resold them set up like you did yours
I am really glad you replied to my other comment on your 6.5 video. I must not have subscribed and wow you have a ton of good content!
I have a 94’ GMT400 with a 6.5td and just got out an old laptop to use the GMTDscan software.
No, the MDI is a GM only tool and only functions with GMs SPS2 and GDS2 subscription software in an unmodified state.
Would you have any idea why when it would power on the red exclamation point lights up and beeps but works normally
Likely failed the self-test, but not in a critical way. You might try doing a firmware recovery to both reformat the internal SD flash card and refresh it's file system. It could be that the SD card is failing, so it's having trouble reading what it needs to load when booting up.
Hi DrShock,
So I have been using with success a VCX Nano cable running Windows 10 with my 2012 GMC Sierra.
I have a 13 silverado and 14 yukon denali. Are there any additional subscriptions or software needed for these?
The MDI itself is just a J2534 class physical interface from the personal computer to the vehicle. All the functionality comes from subscribing to GMs Techline Connect over at www.acdelcotds.com
Is this essentially a replacement for a j card (j2534)?
No, not familiar with that module.
So what I want to find out from you has your board on the MDI CLONE failed yet ?
DrShock thanks a lot so I need the mdi. Thanks for all the info and guidance. !!!
Do you have e a video of using the mdi as a tech2 on the computer?
You're referring to running the Tech2Win app thru the MDI (or any J2534 adapter). I don't have such a video because I own an actual Tech2 scan tool. The menus and use of Tech2Win are the same since the app is actually running the scan tools firmware as an emulator. So other than the initial installation and setup, all the use cases are the same as the Tech2 itself.
I have 2 2003 Chevys and a 2014 Acadia. Should I get a Tech 2 and an MDI, or will an MDI do the older ones?
The MDI would cover them all, though you'll have to pay for a subscription. After 2008 GM stopped doing software you could install on your PC, and instead when to more of cloud hosted model with www.acdelcotds.com
@@DrShock Thanks. My daughter's 2014 Acadia is having an intermittent no crank issue (like all of them) and I figured I'd get the MDI to start running down the modules to try to find the issue. Thanks again.
Thanks for the explanation. What about the newer MDI 2, is it the same procedure if you are looking at a cloned device?
Hi - excellent video - do you have an updated link where one can purchase thes MDI2?
Will this reset/relearn my SAS on my 2013 Cadillac XTS? I tried other scan tools but was unsuccessful.
@@DrShock That's correct, steering angle sensor. Thanks for the bulletin as well as the link.
Hi I’m kinda confused which one do I buy for 2018 Chevy Camaro?
If you're asking about the tool - a Tech2 doesn't support anything that new, so it has to be an MDI (aka MDI1). The MDI2 becomes required only starting with select 2020 model year vehicles.
Can you please update link for this mentioned device in the video? It is outdated than you !
Hey Dr Shock so when I buy this I can choose the cheaper option without the software and just download it myself from Bosch right?
Does this unit also offer vehicle diagnostics and read codes and bi directional control on components or does it program only?
I show that path in this vid - ruclips.net/video/Nr_eYexAAV4/видео.html
If you do _not_ have TIS2000, then you'll have to use the current GM Techline Connect with SPS2 (which replaced TIS2Web and SPS last year) that unfortunately no longer supports the Tech2.
@@DrShock Thanks for the update. So If I got the Tech 2 clone. Does the ACDelco SPS service not support the tech 2 anymore?
Did you ever get the usb cable support bracket? My usb cable is very sloppy on the mdi and I am always afraid of a bad connection.
All the tech 2 clones on eBay day they only work on cars and not the trucks. Is this true? Also, will this work for a 2006 Escalade and 2006!Envoy?
Do you have the MDI selected as the device type vs Tech2 MDI2 or generic J2534? gm-techlink.com/?p=11972
Since you were able to reflash the MDI firmware SD card using MDI manager, I would not suspect the USB cable (and definitely don't attempt WiFi for SPS it's not reliable). Another cause for E4403 can be voltage drop (be sure you have a battery maintainer or second battery connected keeping 12.5V minimum) during SPS. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/MC-10114107-9999.pdf
@@DrShock The "Please select a device" page never opens up for me. It goes straight to entering the vehicle type and year.
Well that seems to be the problem then as it's not getting the communication right because the device isn't being set. You should always get the question about whether you want to reprogram an existing ECU, or replace an ECU like I show at 1:21 in ruclips.net/video/sUMJFwMuAkE/видео.html
Since that is getting skipped too, and presuming you installed the right Java runtime for SPS, I would have to say you have some kind of installation or configuration problem on the laptop since that screen is not showing.
Ignore me - just found out that you have to go via a Saab specific website :-)
Great video on this interesting device DrShock!
Two questions popping up here are about the power supply for this device and using it on my Hummer 2009 H2 and my 2013 Corvette:
Does the device come with an power adapter or is it powered by the USB connection to the laptop/PC - if it doesn't have an power adapter - shich one is the right one for it to buy seperately?
So this thing can do the same as the Tech 2? I have issues with the keyless entry on my '03 Avalanche and want to diagnose that. Will this do that?
Does the software require a licence for doing just diagnostic or is it need a licence like ids software in order to communicate with the vehicle?
The Bosch software that installs on the MDI's internal storage just has a typical license to accept at installation. No fees. The GM TIS2Web offerings are fee based subscriptions thru ACDelco so you have to buy those licenses to do anything with the MDI and the vehicle.
@@DrShock thank you sir
Hi I've installed MDI and also payed for a online sps subscription it's loads up fine but then when it's asked to select the device MDI isn't listed only tech 2 remote any ideas thanks
ACDelco changed the UI late last year, this GM Techlink article goes over it. I am guessing this is what you are running into - gm-techlink.com/?p=11972
@@DrShock basically yes thanks mate
Thanks for the info.
hi sir. down loading the mdi manager from the site u provide gives an error at the last step sayind to update rfd files. do you know what this means.
My issue is I do not have the TIS200 or a subscription.
DrShock thank you . Just did the same thing in the middle of programming a BCM connection failed . Bricked one already .
It is possible to add/remove module in SAAB 1998-2011 as Tech2 will do? Does it support Tis2000 or globalTis?
MDI only works with GlobalTIS, not TIS2000. The latter is only for the older Tech2. An MDI can emulate a Tech2 using Tech2Win. But with the MDI, all of this software requires a pre-paid GM subscription as the software is in the cloud, not on the scanner.
very good video , thanks for English speaking tutorial
Can I use this to update software for Cadillac CUE?
Personally, I don't know of another source for these USB updates than your Cadillac dealer.
hi, do I need any online subscription to change VIN?
If you mean to reflash a VCM/PCM with a different VIN, yes you need a paid subscription to SPS2 on www.acdelcotds.com
@@DrShock my original ecm (07 Cadillac Cts) fried and I bought another ecm taken off another vehicle. I need to change the VIN on the replacement to match the vin of the car.
Then yeah, you'll need an SPS2 subscription, or access to someone who does, to do that with GM tooling.

I only buy from eBay, US sellers that post real photos and respond to messages when asked about details.
would you please share link where you bought your clone from? Thanks
Links are in the description. This is an older tool though, so you have to do your homework, there's no specific seller for these since the pandemic set in, and there are good and not so good clones.
Take what I've shared in this vid about what separates out the good quality clones from the rest, hit up he search links in the description, and match that up with what's available.
dose this work for 2018 Camaro SS ABS brake bleed ?
The year and model is supported according to the GM website - www.acdelco.com/content/dam/acdelco/na/us/en/index/tis2web/02-pdfs/acdelco-tis2web-2019-scan-tool-chart.pdf but can't speak for the specific function as I've not used one on a Camaro of that year.
@@DrShock Thanks
I have had a tech2 for a while too and i use it with tis2000 to do sps programming. Do you know if i can use this instead. I am also wondering if the hard drives available for it can do sps module programming without a subscription. The mdi would be easier to use then dragging out the tech 2 and candi device. Thanks for your excellent video. The mdi is getting so cheap that it seems like a no brainer to go to rather then the tech 2.
Do you need a Windows 7 machine to run this MDI or can I use Windows 10? I have seen comments in forums that you need Windows 7 64 bit edition.
Very helpful video. Thank you so much.

Just got my mdi clone and my tis subscription. Definitely need help getting this linked to my tahoe so I can get back on the road
Do you have any ideas on how to make the internal battery terminals functional again?
Not yet, this is something I haven't had enough time to fully trace out on the logic board to see what the original problem in the clone design was.
DrShock well thanks for the other videos on the mdi. I picked one up based on your videos and was able to program my radio for my Chevy volt.
It would be helpful if you provide a link to the MDI you bought thank you
There are many sellers on eBay which is where I would recommend.
Can this clone GM MDI do reprogram PCM, TCM & ABS modules....?
It can do anything an GM MDI at the dealer could do. There are no known limitations with the high quality clone model as long as you PAY for the ACDelcoTDS software for it.
@@DrShock Thanks my friend
Can this thing do any amount of diagnostics for vehicles other than GM?
No, not as designed and unmodified. It's a GM dealer tool for GM vehicles only.
Will this work on Windows 10 laptop and with zafira b 2011
Yes on Windows 10, though TDS requires a specific level of Java installed to function. Yes on Opel brand, but you would have to check the acdelcotds.com website from your country to see if the Zafira is covered.
Hello Sir,
Today is the first time I've watched your video.
@@DrShock or just use the mdi with tis2000 for cars older than 2009, and with techline for newer cars?
@@thmolle MDI isn't compatible with TIS2000, that software will *only* work with the Tech2.
@@DrShock that isnt true. mdi works fine with tis2000
i have used it with tis2000 to sps programming, you have to set a new Generic Pass Tru driver and select mdi as device to use. just as you would use the tech2 as passtru, and then u use mdi for sps with tis2000, and with tech2win for the rest.
do as described here :
first install mdi manager, to find the unit, close it, and then go to tis2000,
1. Click on the configuration drop-down menu and select IO Management.
2. On the IO Management screen, click DRIVER to add J2534
support to TIS. In the INSTALL DRIVER box, type or browse to
c:\program files\cosids\bin\j2534.dll and click INSTALL. This
will install the driver and bring you back to the IO management screen.
3. On the IO Management screen, click ADD to add the new
interface. For the LOGICAL NAME type “Generic Pass Thru” and for
Driver choose “J2534 Pass Thru Driver”.
For an MDI, I'd only use it with Techline Connect.
you got a link to any specific mdi that is good or just any listed on the ebay page from the link you give above?
The sellers there, as well as on Amazon, come and go. Impossible to recommend a particular one that is valid for any length of time. So as I suggested in the video look for the characteristics of the higher quality MDI in the search results (includes the WiFi adapter, shows photos that look the same as shown in the video, and some sellers will include photos of the inside where you want to see the unique stacked logic board design the high quality MDIs have that match the original GM tool). There are also genuine MDIs that pop up on eBay from time to time that are sometimes a good price if you don't mind them being all banged up cosmetically.
@@DrShock whats the HDD option? do we need that with it or not? what does it do?
Late model 2007 silverado 1500 build date 05/07. Tech2 clone or this new style? Thanks so much!
@@DrShock Thanks so much Doc!
Can you post the link I want to make sure I get the good clone?
Should I go with gm mdi or mdi2 or vcx nano.
Great video. Super clear.
@@DrShock thank you!, works now
have you done a video on the tech 2 clones to look at?
Not a review, but I have several showing how to do different SPS programming procedures with the Tech 2 in my channel.
What is the adapter that you are using, can you share the specification on it? Thanks!
The AC adapter is the one that came with my high quality Tech2 clone, it is 12VDC 2A which matches what the original MDI specs were. Both tools have the same size female barrel connector for DC power.
Will I be able to use this on a 2005 model without having to pay for more software?
No, this is a cloud connected device and requires a paid subscription to GMs software at www.acdelcotds.com. For a 2005 get a Tech2 clone and the software comes on DVD-ROM instead.
@@DrShock what about a 2011 Saab 9-5 NG ? Can I use the Tech 2 and the Global TIS software on a windows 7 virtual machine (using hyper-v in windows 10)?

will this MDI work on obd1 vehicles?
No, the MDI clones only come with a GM ODBII connector cable. You would need a Tech2 which has the correct adapter, or ideally a Tech1 for a pre-1996 model.
