I never got the criticism, that the units are too similar. Shogun 2 is one of the most beloved games in the franchise, and it also had very similar units. But that's going to be the case, when focused on a narrow geographic region, and culture
ToB actually has more unit variety than shogun 2 because in that game the only difference between like 95% of the units is some extra stats depending on clan , unique units are mostly from dlc , but yes your comment is spot on , they could squeeze very little variety into this era and place

The difference between the Viking groups can differ depending on where they're from, like the Danes could have more well armed and professional based units while the units that based from the raiders from Norway could be less armoured and make less use of swords or dane axes. Like there was a modders for Medieval 2 managed to use the same in the Last Kingdom Reforged mod and created different units depending on if they were Celtic, Gaelic, Saxon, Danish, or Norse. Like the archers for most of the archers lack the ability to form cohesive ranks, but the Welsh archers are well trained and are able to form proper ranks, or even the geography. The borders around Wales are more mountainous and Scotland has the Highlands and Lowlands that make them very difficult to fight in cause the picts and later Scots were very adept at fighting there. While the Welsh took advantage of their difficult terrain to defeat the later English Kings even.

I think there’s still a lot of potential for Thrones but feeling CA just didn’t push it enough for it to reach its full potential and the reception for the game due to its shortcomings may have scared them away from doing a Medieval 3 at the time. It’s been fun seeing the amount of mods coming out that have helped make this game shine and add to kits longevity.

Bought it on sale in Steam and have 0 regrets, it's definetely not a game for everyone, cause many people would dislike the food system and whatnot. It's not like the classic Medieval 2 where you just can recruit and build stuff and attack without much thinking, here you have to be very careful specially at the beginning to not fuck it up with food and money. But other than that, I would say is a great game, highly recommended and I just wish someone would make mods for it. Some War of the Roses mod could be great here for example, since is the map of the british isles and you have the "invasion" mechanic which could trigger an invasion of Henry Tudor with some french mercenaries.
I've been playing Total War games since the first iteration of Shogun and this is one of my favourites in the series. To be fair I'm one of those who prefers the historic titles over fantasy. The thing I think most critics of TOB miss is that it's not supposed to be a full version like the ones they compare it to. The whole point of the saga games were that they were supposed to be compact titles for release between the main titles, so it shouldn't get knocked for not having the polish of a full title.

They gave up on it too easily as they could've done the Great Heathen Army and Norman Invasion of England DLC campaigns. I started playing it again last night I enjoyed it as East Anglia.

Ive been sifting through my total war games bored i decided to hit thrones again as i miss the time period now im hooked im plasying as the Irish and sounds aand feels just how i want it its perfect
I personally liked it cause it got me into the battles quicker. The music really got me pumped. I really like it. Pisses me off people bad mouth it cause it's not as deep as Rome 2 or Atila. The battles and especially sieges are some of the most fun in my opinion.

I personally always enjoyed the game and spent many hours in it granted it’s not as amazing as the Rome two or Attila or the other ones, but it was definitely worth its time and it’s much better than Troy in my opinion.

That's a fair review. I just picked this up in a sale and, fwiw, I rate this as one of the best in the historical series. No OP army killing single entities - check No OP hero units - check No OP agents - check Interesting mechanics for recruitment, technology, subordinate loyalty, and province development - check, check, check and check But above all, the seige battles, so often buggy, dull and repetitive, are absolutely sublime. IMO the best in the series by a country mile. I am looking forward to many hours of engagement with this game.
It’s a seriously fun game. Sure, like any other TW title, at a certain point you are unbeatable. But, that’s where the individual creativeness comes in. I like big battles and big units, while yes shieldwall mod makes it far more realistic to the time period and army sizes of the time, I still like big battles. So I took the basic gist of shieldwall and only had a select few thegns and the even better units, as a royal retinue sort, reserved for the king, heir, and war master (council type of title). The rest were Fyrd units. Mostly spearmen. Yes, a lot of the time they would be chewed through as the AI certainly did not make armies like that, the best of the best, especially the raider factions coming ever so often. It was still really good fun and is great to jump in for a few weeks of campaigns and jump out a while. It is very replayable. Some of the best sieges a available. The Briton factions stronghold maps are the best to defend. Attacking is meh, they don’t utilize the map, by the time you’ve gotten a foothold beyond the walls, their army is all gone. Add the realistic names/language mod, makes it even better for some odd reason. Sure, it’s hard to discern what the fuck you’re looking at, just use the stats to see the differences. Overall I would recommend this to any and all who have the slightest interest in it. The sound design is a bit of a treat. The unit selection, the chanting that starts when armies are getting closer to the other. S tier sound design
I totally agree with you about you becoming eventually unbeatable that’s why I enjoy the beginning of campaigns the most because you either break or you make it and sometimes I make decisions that are against my nations best interest just to make the game more difficult

Yes great game! Ships actually matter. Use your generals as spy's explorers raiders etc Garrison small towns by just keep an army or couple units in the town. Etc etc...Best sieges ever! Plus the mods are insane.😊 Also certain units can do surprise attacks out side of the start area. And Ambushing from cover actually works. Also you can truly use the terrain to your advantage
I feel they dropped the game too quickly to focus on warhammer. It's a shame because this game has so much potential, it's a really awesome game. It reminds me of shogun 2 but with the english. I just hope we get a war of the roses mod someday!
I just bought this game for 10 bucks on the steam sale. I had held off on buying cuz of the reviews. but for ten bucks i think i got a steal. I dont think its a bad game and all and dont see why all the hate its gotten. I mean, i suppose yeah if youre a die hard fan of classic total wars this game isnt for you. It plays differently, its on a much smaller scale, less factions to choose from. So i guess on one hand i can see why those people wouldnt like this title. And i guess im a tad disappointed myself i only get like ten factions to choose from. But all the same, the game its self is not bad. I actually like it a lot and i dont usually like the saga variants of total war games. So idk, i guess if youre one of those people i mentioned then yeah dont buy this game. but if those things dont bother you that much its not bad full price or on sale.

one thing i dont understand is why the ai turns its units back towards me in battle , and as with every total war game after shogun 2 it attacks with its entire army the moment one of my own ranged units gets into firing range regardless of who has the ranged advantage (thats how the ai used to work btw)
Hoenstly I want a Total War Rome with Han China included. Hell include Yamato Japan and Gojoseon Korea as well! I guess Total War Britannia wasn't the direction I was interested in. I may give it a shot here in a few weeks however.

Base Shogun 2 quite literally has the same units for every faction, the only difference is stats.

You should have mentioned some of the excellent mods for Thrones like Bran's Campaign AI or the Shieldwall mod. They really improve the gameplay.

I like the Kingdoms Grand campaign mod for M2TW. Loads of hours in that!

It would be cool if they added Normandy to the map seeing that the Normaunds are it the game as ai
Honestly ToB and Atillas have the best battles imo, and I enjoy the battles more in total war rather than the campaign map

The game is really good if you play with Shieldwall and 1066 ad mods.
