I love the Randomised Faction Location feature in this game, it gives you an experience of roguelike gameplay in TW. With the map expansions that came with Dynasties update this feature is even better! I started a campaign as Achilles, spawned in the middle of Mesopotamia and the experience to survive was wild and fun!
Yeah I’m 12 hrs into a Babylonian campaign and super happy. Very immersive and great to have a solid historical title out again. I did turn lethality off which I think will make it even better
I'm glad you mentioned the historical unit pack from Troy into Pharoeh, the lack of cool units from Troy for Achilles and the others is my biggest gripe so far, and even then it's a minor gripe
This is one of the most head-scratching...choices (?) they made, because it's so low-effort. You already made distinct, unique rosters for the Illiad characters in Troy. Why would you NOT just bring them over? "Historical accuracy" kind of flies out of the window when the faction is led by fucking Achilles lmao. Another minor gripe like yours is that the Amazons were excluded because of their historical inaccuracy (fair enough)...but instead we got the Cimmerians who are, you guessed it, historically inaccurate. Amazons had a unique unit roster too, much more so than the Cimmerians. Was a mistake imo, especially because we already have the Myth characters anyway.
I for one have been enjoying both the multiplayer scene and the campaign’s customisation you can change lethality, randomize starting positions and make the collapse easier or worse depending on settings and gameplay. My favourite historical era has got to be the bronze age and seeing Mesopotamians, Mycenenes, Egyptians, Cannanites and Hittites battle it out has been a dream come true. Its definitely worth getting it after the price changes and the time period is fresh having never before been seen from the franchise (unless from mods). CA Sophia have some balance changes to make specifically around unit caps and lethality on certain weapon types. Right now ranged weapons are incredibly dangerous and chariots have a hard time punching through light and medium infantry but the foundations are solid. Keen to see new people on the battlefield.
With the mod point: this game not only has great potential for overhaul mods, but the whole game could be the next game to feature great mods for new settings (ie seven kingdoms total war, third age total war etc etc)
Not really with warscape engine they need a better unit clash engine as warscape still to buggy for modding not even darhmod could fix the all modern bugs in warscape engine versions modern
@@mscapeh4451 but also this engine supports things like dragons and zombies and the like. Perhaps animations could be imported and used here? For things like Game of thrones i mean
they dont have troys beautiful map background when you zoom in. in troy, the far mountains would become greek handdrawing with more details. it looked sooo good
Had Adad's and Ninurta's bodyguard units clash with each other in campaign. The combat banter they have adds some drama to the battle that was going on.
My brother and I bought this game yesterday and have been having a blast on head to head campaigns. There is a few things I hope they do add in the future. But so far, this is my favorite recent historical title in sometime.
This is one of my favourite total war. Fun fact: if you are playing as a horde and using Dominance skill the temporary army that you have from the settlement doesn't count to administration level but when you are losing this army - it lowers your administration level per every unit you lose. That means you have administration points on minus what leads to having the highest administration and +140% to upkeep. This is one of the greatest mechanics in the whole series and they didn't even have noticed that it has such an important problem. So the title of this film describes perfectly what I'm thinking about this game.
That bug actually sounds game breaking you should definitely report that on the official forums so they fix that soon. That could ruin Path of the Marauders!
@@happycompy I did, know I have encountered another one - after death of Jolaos I can't build outposts as the horde. I think it will be some time before they will fix all the bugs.
Definitely has saved the game. If they patch the bugs and port the diplomacy system from WH3 to Pharaoh, maybe add some units like elephants, etc and the game is golden.
Still can't get over making Achilles and Ajax minor factions and removing their elite unique units from Troy. In a game whose biggest criticism was lack of unit diversity seems like a very CA shoot yourself in the foot move.
It was absolutely an self-inflicted L. They already did all the work making the units for Troy. Porting them over would've been cake. It was a really strange choice, considering they already have ACHILLES in the game 😂
I had very low expectations for Dynasties but its really good. I haven't been this immersed in a TW game in a long time. The only thing that sucks is that it isn't getting any further DLC or support. I wish they would build on this
This is gonna sound dumb but I smiled like an idiot when I read your comment. Dude it's been so long since I've seen you comment genuine enjoyment about a piece of TW content. Not just "it's alright." But "it's really good." It hits different knowing that I'm on the same page as the people who have been watching the channel for years. It's not just you, I've seen a few other fellow Rome 2 boomers come out of the woodwork and say they're enjoying Dynasties, and it's so fucking sick that I'm not alone here lol. On a side note, I actually thought of your mods "A More Aggressive AI" yesterday, because I keep seeing people complaining that the Pharaoh AI is too aggressive and I'm worried that CA is going to pacify it because of people complaining. The AI was WAY too passive pre-Dynasties, and I LIKE how aggro it is now. So I was thinking that I might have to dust off your old ROME 2 mod in RPFM and try to preserve those same tables in Dynasties' current version just in case.
@@happycompy yeah I thought I was broken haha I just didn't think I would ever like a TW game again. I felt like the little Zoloft ball from the commercials when the narrator says "do you no longer enjoy the things you used to love?" Hopefully this is the beginning of CA's redemption arc because I'm here for it.

Imma be real Pharaoh was good when it launched, but it had the same issue that the OG Rome had which was if you played anyone other than the poster civ there just wasn't that much to do. Glad this update gives everyone actual depth
Minor Factions is what attracted me the most and I play the most. Assyria is tough considering you are the King of the Universe, but a great way to roleplay as "I must reunite the realm!" Another fun playthrough I did was one of the Hittite minor kingdoms, Carchemish. The roleplay mindset was "I can choose my throne as I am at the crossroads of empires" and eventually I invaded the Hittite Empire with a multicultural army from the Canaanite and Assyrian/Akkadian rosters.
Chad minor faction enjoyer! I want to play Carchemish for a different reason. They were one of the most iconic neo-Hittite states after the Bronze Age Collapsed, so it could be fun to see how I fare in their shoes.
@@happycompy It truly is the fact that they are at the crossroads of empires, just like their northern sister, Malidiya. But they don't have the special "fortress of empires" status that Carchemish has. I have also tried the Elamites, Ashkelon, Napata (Memnon), but I still feel I am having the best of playthroughs with Carchemish.
@@happycompy thought process is essentially there would be a core of veteran and loyal Hatti soldiers but they had all this spare manpower. Might as well enlist the local Assyrians and Canaanites to do the job too! Cant kill off all the noble sons of Hattusa haha. It is pretty fun on the map too to see the ruler/general with his core of loyal “retainers” augmented by ranks of native units.
I used campaign customization and I made the map visible from the start (but fog of war still active) so I can see where the resources are. However, it was a major mistake, because the AI is so freaking dumb. Playing as Assyria, minor factions as far away as Greece randomly declare war on me for no reason and march armies across the entire Mediterranean somehow to get to my settlements... I don't understand how Total War has spent over a decade working on these games with little progress on campaign AI and diplomacy.
I loved Total War Pharaoh dynasties, the only thing I disliked was Cavalry in the Bronze Age for factions in Mesopotamia, luckily there is a mod that disables cavalry and make you play with only chariots.
Great review HappyCompy. Makes you wonder how Pharaoh's reception would have been had CA led with _this_version of the game instead of the pared-down scenario that released as the main campaign? I've often defended CA in the past even after past mistakes but I think the post-Three Kingdoms period marked a change in CA for the worse. I hope they remember the lesson of Pharaoh when it's time to announce their next historical title.
Thanks Rex! Yeah I hope so too, but I'm honestly pretty pessimistic. CA has been down this apology tour route before after Rome 2's disaster launch. Unless the perverse incentives that plague the AAA gaming industry change (they won't), it's more likely than not that CA keeps releasing turds that they have to polish later into decent games. Just my 2 cents.
@@freelancershogun thank you! I was honestly worried that that section would bore people. I'm glad to know that trusting people's attention spans was the right call! Edit: oh were you talking about the "Dynasties" section of the vid, or the video itself? 😅
Thank you! I clicked really well with Suppululiuma back in the original game. Really solid roster with heavy infantry💪. Ended up conquering all of Anatolia (as much as the game's map let me) and the Levant. Tricky start though, surrounded by potential enemies on basically all sides.
I noticed the Dynasty Tree and Deeds vanishes if your faction is adopted into the dynasty and you inherit the Supreme Ruler title. However, it still works for Seti and if you win a Legitimacy War, then the AI is too aggressive in my honest opinion for Normal Difficulty.
Then many of the Aegean Faction leaders say the wrong thing like Ajax calling Agamemnon the Amazonian Queen from Troy. I also seen Tausret's model changed to a male one in the mid game as playing as Seti.
I am loving the update. Just hope we get a mod bringing in the Amazons eventually, also hopefully the sucess of Dynasties convinces CA to give it more content going forward.
This game is completely unbalanced. I have 13 regions and 3 provinces with edicts with all kind of source materials and I can hardly keep 3 armies with 10-15 units, while my enemies with only 3 regions can yield 5-7 armies with 20 stacks, even with units that need specific buildings to be produced that they dont have, horses, for example, and definitely no gold, no copper. How is that possible? AI is crazy and cheats constantly. I see constant examples. The game is brilliant in many aspects but absurd in so many others.
Because Rome 1's OST is the GOAT, and everyone knows it. No shade to Ian Livingstone or Richard Before, but Jeff Van Dyck's score for that game IS total war to me. I tried the Pharaoh music as background music during the edit but Rome's is just so much better, and it weirdly didn't drown out my voice like Pharaoh's did, despite it being louder in the mix. I agree with you that it was a poor editing choice, given that I like Pharaoh's ost. If I could go back, I'd switch out the soundtrack for Pharaoh's during the audio section of the vid. But I'd still keep Rome's for the rest 😂. Thanks for watching man 👍
@@happycompy Yea I get the feeling too where it's probably a bit too forced to use the music of the same game, though I had to comment when it seemed pretty odd that the previous video had Arena music at some point despite talking about atmosphere.
@@Dolfy ayyeee good ear! Makes sense that you'd recognize the Arena music since you used to play. I use the battle music from Arena in some of my vids because I love the electric guitar in some of the tracks. Reminds me of the "300" movie soundtrack. Beddow did a good job on it. I'm curious what you think about this but imo his Rome 2 soundtrack sucked hard (aside from the main menu music), which is weird because he proved he can make good music with games like Napoleon, Warhammer, and Arena 🤷♂️. If I made a tier list of total war soundtracks, I would put Rome 2 in D tier.
I bought the game, even though you advised me not to. I should've listened. 🤦🏼♂️ Why do they make the new total war games with such weird collision?! Rome 1 and Medieval 2, you felt a cavalry charge, you felt any charge, horses would flip if they ran into pikes, the whole line would fly if hit unprepared from the side! It's like they blob up into masses without that smack.
Eh I know what you mean but the collisions were not great in Rome 1 or Medieval 2. Like you realize when calvary charges into infantry they would get trampled over instead of flying into the air right? Same issue with large projectile impacts.
@@johnirby8847 I agree the battles aren't the same because the warscape engine is trash. CA needs to develop a new engine instead of building on the same shitty engine they've been using since Empire.
I wish they would bring back the UI of Rome1 or Medieval2 for settlements, where they had actual images. It was just so much more pleasing for the eyes. I also really would like them to improve the dynastie system where the characters develope by themselves. They could take some inspiration from the nemesis system from the middle earth games. It would also be cool if you would research technology such as a new armor-production-method. You could have an own creator for your specific designed troupes. Give them a spear-> costs extra 50gold Want a bigger shield-> 25gold extra + 5armor and defense Want them to have more endurance? -> each soldier gets a water-bottle where you can replenish some energy when you click on a „drink now“ button…
Are Rhesus and Memnon playable from Troy? I was assuming they weren't but maybe they are? I know they said the Amazons won't be (Maybe if they make a future Myth DLC for Dynasties?)
Waiting for a bit until the game is in a more polished state but I seriously can't wait to play as the Phrygians (underappreciated civilizations gang rise up)
I like the new animations it reminds me of how I had a mod in Rome 2 so you always got the cool animations, I hope they stop using the war hammer engines I can’t take it seriously when the guys looks goofy
Never thought I would of got Pharoah but this update certainly changed my mind. Love it so far except for the sacking fort cheese and A.I travelling the whole map with full stacks to attack me whilst ignore neighbours they are at war with
Both player and A.I get extra movement after sacking a fort/outpost so you can't catch up to them. Ended having economy ruined as Troy as i chased them around for 6 turns. It was only a 4 stack at half health too 😢 Unfortunately they don't add cheese as a resource you can enquire from sacking forts
10:42 how do you access this page after becoming the king of the universe? I want to look back on the previous dynasties but all it shows is ruling family
Hopefully some of those unique units under the minor factions will be worked in. Looking into it, Hanigalbat is the Mitanni after its fall from supremacy hence its special chariots being labeled that. I suppose they were trying to allow for a chance to recapture the glory
Hanigalbat isn't really the Mitanni after its fall. While the Assyrian's continued to use the name Hanigalbat for the area, it was ruled by a branch of the royal family of Assyria as a vassal to the kings of Assyria. The character we start off with in charge of Hanigalbat in game historically usurped the Assyrian throne, becoming king himself, hence why they made Hanigalbat the major faction instead of Assyria proper.
I just can’t get into it. I’ve tried twice now something about the UI/overlay, the sound effects, the animations. it sounds weird, but I’m just not feeling it. I dont like the Troy combat system i’ce never liked it and honestly I’m still over here grinding away at 1212 AD Atilla and DEI Rome 2 and having way more fun then i ever did trying Pharaoh. idek it has to much of an arcadey feel for me if that makes sense? Ill try again as Mesopotamia or Troy…😅
Nah man, if you don't like it you don't like it. Just return it if you still can, playing in Mesopotamia won't suddenly change the game. The new games definitely "feel" a lot different from Rome 2/Attila. I can see where you're coming from.
I was 13 when I found Rome total war on the shelf at target, by accident. Back when you looked at the pictures on the back of the box and judged it by that. I loved age of empires and age of mythology at the time. Thought it was similar and asked my mom to get it. This game kicked my 13 year old ass. But I can definitely say this game is responsible for jump starting my game sense. I always played AOE on easy so this was the first time I had to stop and actually think about how the game worked and learn through trial and error.
After about 20 hours I turned lethality off as well, as I realised 90 percent of my battles were frantic attempts to get to the enemy archers before they delete my units in seconds. This combibed with surprisingly competent AI at screening their own ranged units with other fighters turned all the battles into a hectic mess and if the AI had ranged superiority, it was over. Even formations were useless, my super elite medjay in shield formation would go bye bye in 2 volleys. With lethality off ranged is still strong, but not insta win anymore. Might try the mod you mentioned though.
You just described what my battle experience has been as well. I haven't played long enough without lethality to see if it unbalances the game in another direction yet, but so far I'm enjoying the slower pace more than playing with lethality on.
Would love some features from pharao ( outposts, Babylon, Achaean court, family) to be added to Troy, I have it but don’t really have motivation to play
ngl the sole /reason/ I got this game was /because/ it was around the bronze age; the hittites and the other indigenous peoples of Anatolia have always fascinated me so much
Tbh i wasnt expecting anything yet when it was on sale i give it a shot. I jumped and played as Hittits and im on turn 40 atm. Damn its intense. Im playing on legendary dif and i conquered center anatolia yet there is so much to do. I didnt understand the court mechanic, plots and god things but the game is so fun right now. Campaign map is fun to play, arts and character designs are amazing. Bringing family tree system is really good. But im unpleased with the musics and siege maps. Like in troy there are to few siege maps. Hope they ll add more.

Really loving the adventure this is. But yeah that lag during turn is a pain....but other then that its so beautiful. i also love the lethality aspect of the gam.
What if CA Sophia decided to make a Shang vs Zhou Dynasty DLC for this game, to cash in more profits? Because Bronze Age China in Chinese history itself is often under represented. Most games sets in China were either Three Kingdomsera (3K Total War) and modern era(Battlefield 4). (On the other hand, based on artifacts and acheological evidences, the costumes and hair styles in late Shang and Early Zhou Dynasty era were similar to the later Greeks and Romans from the classical era.)
That's a really cool idea! Chinese history is a big blind spot for me, TW games like Shogun 2 and 3K (even ETW with India) helped inspire me to learn more. Why do you think it would be a good DLC vs it's own game?
@@happycompy For me DLC should be the cherry on top of the already delicious cake like Fates Divided and Nanman Tribes DLC for Three Kingdoms. Oh there's a 1990 Chinese drama sets during the late Shang Dynasty called "Investitures for the gods" (Feng Shen Bang封神榜),in that drama you can see the costumes and hairstyles were really different from the ones from the Confucius and Three Kingdoms era. You can watch that drama on RUclips.
I have thought a lot about the Sophia team retaking the 3K and adding the north DLC that was announced and developed and adding a little bit of spice. It has a solid playerbase and would make people happy
@happycompy how many men in the extreme size? Sieges have always been messy the bigger you make the units in game is like they balance the siege around the medium unit size

Since the death of three kingdoms. I went to paradox grand strategy games. 😅 This game is quite a surprise. Especially the campaign map design and complete factions. Feels good to back to TW again.
If they decide to make another sword and sandal Total War Title, I truly hope it will be based around the Achaemenid Empire especially after how amazing they did this dynasty expansion. Having the game release with a map spanning India to the Iberian Peninsula with Cyrus the Great as its poster boy for launch and possible DLCs could include different start dates such as: 1: The Neo-Assyrian Empire vs the Coalition of Chaldean Babylonians and Medes. 2: The Greco-Persian Wars. 3: Cyrus the Younger's campaign for the throne with his Greek 10,000 mercenaries. 4: Macedon under Phillip giving you the option to prevent assassination or go with Alex. 5: Rise of Rome, Wars of the Diadochi and Chandragupta Maurya conquest of all most of India, I mean most of India. These are just a few examples that such a game could be truly massive in scope.
Honestly I only have a handful of complaints. I would like larger battle fields like In medieval 2, and I would like for all buildings to give garrison troops. I miss the idea that buildings other than military buildings would provide troops, and that most buildings provided militia types of units.
The point is, that is not that different from original Pharaoh version - it is same game on bigger map + family tree (which many people ignore anyway in TW). People hated Pharaoh, because of "popular opinion"

BY OSIRIS I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH
Hell yeah man, I'm glad to hear it!
For things like Game of thrones i mean
they dont have troys beautiful map background when you zoom in. in troy, the far mountains would become greek handdrawing with more details. it looked sooo good
That's true. Also the fog of war burned away like paper when you revealed it which looked 🔥🔥🔥
John Cena as high priest of Amun killed me XD
Had Adad's and Ninurta's bodyguard units clash with each other in campaign. The combat banter they have adds some drama to the battle that was going on.
The trash talk is an underrated detail. That's awesome
Once we thought pharaoh was a troy dlc , now it's the other way around .
I think Pharaoh and Troy sit really nicely beside each other now as the Bronze Age records/romance modes, but each a solid game in its own right.

My brother and I bought this game yesterday and have been having a blast on head to head campaigns. There is a few things I hope they do add in the future. But so far, this is my favorite recent historical title in sometime.
The standards for CA have become so low that just making a decent historical game is now highly praised.
This is the truth. The bar is on the floor.
“King slayer” was actually a dishonorable title to have back then 😂

History, my man. I know you love historical accuracy. Just thought I’d give you a slight reminder for your next videos
I felt like the little Zoloft ball from the commercials when the narrator says "do you no longer enjoy the things you used to love?" But the fact that this game so easily sucked me in and is giving me the same vibes I got when I played (the relatively patched up) Rome 2, lets me know that I'm fine, its CA that's been dropping the ball. Hopefully this is the beginning of CA's redemption arc because I'm here for it.
@@thunderbagel3886 "do you no longer enjoy the things you used to love?" so fucking relatable man hahahahah I think a lot of us have been feeling like that about Total War. Glad to know we're not crazy, and that CA has just been sucking.

Hah! You know me too well. Makes sense that you would, we've been subbed to each other for a freaking decade ;)
@@TheHorica666 your multicultural army invading Hatti sounds badass. Almost like a reverse of what they did to Babylon.
@@TheHorica666 why Ashkelon over Byblos, Ugarit, or Alashiya? I know nothing about Ashkelon's "lore"
Yep I made the exact same mistake prior to Dynasties launch and I'll never make it again
Finally, something a historical RTS really needed - Courtly Intrigue.
I loved Total War Pharaoh dynasties, the only thing I disliked was Cavalry in the Bronze Age for factions in Mesopotamia, luckily there is a mod that disables cavalry and make you play with only chariots.
Yeah that mod went up so quick too lol
Great review, cant wait for more Pharaoh content🤗

Nope. You can customize them at any time during battle by holding down space bar.
CA Sophia:dinner is served gentlemen.
Did they get rid of city battles? Field battles are always way more fun
Such a nice review!
Been struggling with Hatti on my campaign, but is really fun.
Also, hittites are awesome.
Is there no Sparta and Menalaus?
Sparta is a settlement owned by Mycenae and Menelaus is part of the Mycenaean faction with Agamemnon

This seems like a return of so many features that drew me to the total war franchise in the first place. Awesome.

I am loving the update. Just hope we get a mod bringing in the Amazons eventually, also hopefully the sucess of Dynasties convinces CA to give it more content going forward.
I also want the Amazons back! I could see someone modding them in.
Why is most of the video Rome 1 music if you talked about campaign/battle tracks in such a good light?
8:22 My fav part of this video 😂😂
9:40 I guess you can be playing as the Sea People invasions and bring destruction to the world as Iolaos, Walwetes or even Agamemnon.
I bought the game, even though you advised me not to. I should've listened. 🤦🏼♂️
Why do they make the new total war games with such weird collision?!
@DJ-1Q84 they also get trampled if you look close enough or use the remaster! I'm telling you it doesn't feel the same. Battles don't feel the same!
@@johnirby8847 I agree the battles aren't the same because the warscape engine is trash. CA needs to develop a new engine instead of building on the same shitty engine they've been using since Empire.
Very well structured video. Glad you like it, I'm enjoying it as well.
Give them a spear-> costs extra 50gold
Want a bigger shield-> 25gold extra + 5armor and defense
Want them to have more endurance? -> each soldier gets a water-bottle where you can replenish some energy when you click on a „drink now“ button…
Are Rhesus and Memnon playable from Troy? I was assuming they weren't but maybe they are? I know they said the Amazons won't be (Maybe if they make a future Myth DLC for Dynasties?)

7:27 Resupplying other units has been a feature in Total War: Warhammer II and III.
Yeah, I'm getting set straight in the comments for it 😂🙌. I have 400 hours in WH2 that's the saddest part.
I love long turn ending and load screens. Bong hits
LMAO
I was 13 when I found Rome total war on the shelf at target, by accident. Back when you looked at the pictures on the back of the box and judged it by that. I loved age of empires and age of mythology at the time. Thought it was similar and asked my mom to get it. This game kicked my 13 year old ass. But I can definitely say this game is responsible for jump starting my game sense. I always played AOE on easy so this was the first time I had to stop and actually think about how the game worked and learn through trial and error.
It looks stunningly beautiful too, finally made me pull the trigger on this game!
Hell yeah Punggles, I hope you enjoy it man!
Are the turn times as bad as Attila?

You can watch that drama on RUclips.
I have thought a lot about the Sophia team retaking the 3K and adding the north DLC that was announced and developed and adding a little bit of spice. It has a solid playerbase and would make people happy

If they decide to make another sword and sandal Total War Title, I truly hope it will be based around the Achaemenid Empire especially after how amazing they did this dynasty expansion. Having the game release with a map spanning India to the Iberian Peninsula with Cyrus the Great as its poster boy for launch and possible DLCs could include different start dates such as:
1: The Neo-Assyrian Empire vs the Coalition of Chaldean Babylonians and Medes.
@@KTA1sVidsandFacts all of those scenarios sound absolutely epic. Especially the Neo-Assyrians vs Babylon+Medes and the Wars of the Diadochi!
Honestly I only have a handful of complaints. I would like larger battle fields like In medieval 2, and I would like for all buildings to give garrison troops. I miss the idea that buildings other than military buildings would provide troops, and that most buildings provided militia types of units.
