Great video, after years of trade work you learn a few tips and tricks. If you don't own a pair of crimpers you can use needle nose pliers to create pleats/crimps on the ductwork by gently gripping and slightly twisting the pliers ever 1/4 inch or so around the duct

Thank you for this! I recently moved and have never installed a washer/dryer on my own. I watched another tutorial because I had to switch out my 3 prong for a 4 prong on the dryer, but this video helped me cross the finish line once I’d changed out the cable, so thank you!
Also me being an HVAC tech it’s against code “at least I’m Ontario, Canada” to have any screws in dryer venting it’s a fire hazard because it can catch the lint.
@SomeDumUsrName Sure, and as a DIYer, I've learned a treasure trove of information from Jeff's video's, which is a lot more than I've learned from you. I've also learned that there are some who just come with nothing to contribute other than criticize a man who's helping to empower others figure out how to do things for themselves. Beside, codes vary from state to state and I happened to look up code M1502.4. In some places, as long as the screw does not protrude inside the ductwork more that 1/8", it is code compliant. Even if it's not code compliant, that screw end would have to be one hell of a lint sucking magnet before it would pose any sort of danger. Anyhow, for those of you who are so frightened of a screw, just add a zip tie and move on.
@@okymek This happened with my dryer vent. I'm not sure if that vent was ever cleaned. I bought the house just over 2 years ago, installed new washer/dryer. The first year or so it ran well enough. A few months into year two we noticed it taking longer for clothes to come out dry. Then we started getting these errors on the dryer that came on progressively sooner. Realized it was associated with the lint trap or dryer vent. Lint trap is cleared after every use. So, spent the $20 or so dollars on a snaking dryer vent brush. Took nearly 2 hours to clean that sh*t up. I couldn't believe the dryer actually attempted to run and hadn't burned out. It was seriously clogged for what nearly seemed the entire length of the vent (vented through the wall in the center of the house at an angle at the precipice of the roof). Wife thought I was crazy but after the first couple handfuls of old nasty lint in the vent, she realized we were in it for the long haul until it was completely clear after two full runs. Now it dries like a d@mn champion. I made sure to put about 4 to 6 inches of vent hose around the piping to ensure there was a solid 2 inches passed the worm gear after tightening to prevent accidental slippage.

I've heard that the new recommendation is to avoid flexible ducts and instead use rigid galvanized steel because the coils in the flexible duct collects lint and inhibits air flow. Also, I learned to never insert a screw as it will collect lint also.
One tip I saw was to slightly crimp outward, a "notch", in the hard duct as a kinda "catch" . The adjustable hose clamp as it will slip over the notch but not back down....

Make sure the shipping screws/bolts are out if you have a side loading washer; it acts as a brake for the drum so it doesn’t spin during shipping, You are going to hear such a big difference if you kept it in
Actually Jeff, you missed one of the most important things to do once you've got them hooked up. Ensure they are Level. Spend 10 -15 minutes making sure they're level side to side and back to front and your units will make a lot less noise and last a lot longer.
How to level the floor first? I really dont feel like using liquid self leveling. Thinking plywood and sand (small laundry). Throw some floating tile on top
@@valentinek.t3327 You can get plastic pans that go under your washer. You can run that to your drain then you don't have to worry about damaging your wood. Level it with plywood but remember to keep a slight slope towards the drain. You can use vinyl flooring so you don't have to worry about water damage since it is a high humidity room.
We bought a house 4 months ago that came with a washer and dryer. The dryer is an older Whirlpool that runs on gas. As a new homeowner, this is a complicated scenario for having to clean out the venting/exhaust.
On steam dryers it is my understanding you’re supposed to hook up to the cold water supply at least for my gas dryer and the heat is provided by the gas dryer part and the cold water just supplies the water
I was over thinking where the washer hose goes, I thought to myself, it cannot be that simple. You proved me wrong, lol. Thank you! The dryer is a hassle, do I need the elbows or can I install without as you did?
Would it be bad to add an air gap between the washing machine hose and the drain? The thread grabbing thing is a neat tip. I had the 8ft accordion type dryer vent but a possum got into the house & the dogs chased it behind the washing machine. The poor thing ripped the vent to pieces. The back of my dryer faces an interior wall but the exterior wall is just to the right. It's extremely cramped though so we are renovating, tearing down small walls (non-loadbearing) and swapping the laundry room with a useless tiny bathroom. Anyway, washing machine and dryer will be turned with their backs to the exterior wall to make it easier to vent the dryer (and have more space in front of the machines). We will be using a Magvent for the dryer vent. You clamp one end to the dryer and the other end attaches magnetically to a corresponding piece on the wall.
How do you clean the dryer duct if the unit is in the basement and it goes up into the first floor? Our dryer duct is ground floor going directly outside.. It is easy for me to clean it every three months.. Thanks!!!
After 48 years in the business I often find it is best to install the dryer first. The big fire hazard crushed venting ! Washer hoses give you enough length to “ walk or wiggle “ it into place . Other wise , pretty good information
Hey bud ive been watching alot of your videos for shower renovation. Im about to start tiling and was wondering if you have any videos on tiling a shower curb. Thanks for the vids. Very first shower redo for me. And you have been very helpfull.
I watched a Home Depot video before this one, and when I turned the water on the pipe came loose and sprayed all over the room. This video is much more helpful lol
correct Ashley. The only time you need to close the valves is when you are going on vacation. I usually just turn of the water to the house when I am away. cheap insurance.
Question: The duct for the dryer, does that have to be a distance from the wall or does that not heat up enough to cause an issue to the lining behind the wall, or in my case drywall? Thank you
It's better to leave a bit of room if you can. Will do anything to the wall? No, but i is alway good to give it a little room to make sure you don't squish any part of the hose. The 90 degrees angles are the weak link in a hose.
You make it sound like everyone knows this, but the duct stuff was super helpful. I'm mad that I didn't learn this before I tried to connect a new hose to my portable air conditioner. I bought a rather rigid tough aluminum hose and I was terrible at connecting it in a way that it would stay on. A dryer hose and that screwing stuff would have been much better.
I have a house almost done being built. Utility sink in garage stub outs with 2 inch drain line. I will be moving my washer and dryer to the garage next to the sink. What is the best way to connect the drain home from the washer?
We moved our washer and dryer in our basement and were doing this by our own which is helpful but we're stock and pending job bcoz of the vent that we need to dig a hole and connect it to our main floor vent hole in the wall.
Already knew how to do that, but thanks for everyone who didn't! It's easy, no need to call anyone to have them installed, just like the dishwasher. :)
Single woman here. I like the self tapping screw idea. Does it just go through the metal flange and ducting that is in the wall easily do I need a drill.
Thanks for this. I am eager to learn how to plumb two new laundry rooms in my 100-year-old house with no current set up. Help us with the plumbing and venting in the next one? :)
hey jeff i heard that some washers have shipping bolts you need to take out, that keep the drum from moving around too much during shipping. is this specific to front load washers compared to top load? or is it all the same?
shoyru166166 .....I have seen this rod on the stacked units....if you don’t remove it, you will damage the washer and it will cost big bucks for repairs. Great for pointing this out.
Thanks Jeff, after much grief, I found out there was something called shipping bolts which makes the machine shake, rattle, and roll across the room. Those need to be removed. Took me months to learn the hard way.
Ensure units are level and use steel braided inlet hoses: older relative experienced tens of thousands of dollars in water damage when cheap hose ruptured and she wasn't home...not likely, but cheap investment
A question about dryers: i would like to place one in my kitchen because theres no other room anywhere, and i dont have an exhaust pipe there to connect it to. Can i just put the other end outside the window?
Does the gear clamo go right over the metal rung? Or in between them. I also eneded buying an 8ft one when I really only needed 3. Live and learn I guess.

A dryer hose and that screwing stuff would have been much better.
thx jeff bhaji
I have a house almost done being built. Utility sink in garage stub outs with 2 inch drain line. I will be moving my washer and dryer to the garage next to the sink. What is the best way to connect the drain home from the washer?
So cut off the slack in the dryer hose to help prevent lent build up? Make it as straight as possible?
We moved our washer and dryer in our basement and were doing this by our own which is helpful but we're stock and pending job bcoz of the vent that we need to dig a hole and connect it to our main floor vent hole in the wall.
stainless steel washing machine hoses to reduce chance of flood?
The flood is usually the plump not the hoses!
We had the valve fail and cause a flood once. Then the second time was the fill pressure sensor failed and it just over flowed the tub.
What are the lists of tools to get for each appliances? are they standard or is it dependent on the machine?
yay this video is for me! :)))))))))) First time home owner xD
Thanks for the video, but as per OBC it's not allowed to put a screw in the dryer vent pipe.
How do you know which hot and cold line to run on the wall?
I did get one good tip. Thanks!
Thanks for this. I am eager to learn how to plumb two new laundry rooms in my 100-year-old house with no current set up. Help us with the plumbing and venting in the next one? :)
Hey Jeff! What do I do if the washer hook up is on the right and the dryer hook up is on the left?
Hi there. Isn’t there has 4 lock in the back of the washer you have to screw it off?
Thanks for the video =)
Definitely helpful thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers Larry!
hey jeff i heard that some washers have shipping bolts you need to take out, that keep the drum from moving around too much during shipping. is this specific to front load washers compared to top load? or is it all the same?
shoyru166166 .....I have seen this rod on the stacked units....if you don’t remove it, you will damage the washer and it will cost big bucks for repairs. Great for pointing this out.
Always read the manual before installing!
just look on the back lol usually it is only front loads.
Thanks Jeff, after much grief, I found out there was something called shipping bolts which makes the machine shake, rattle, and roll across the room. Those need to be removed. Took me months to learn the hard way.
Yes. And they destroy your washing machine
Ensure units are level and use steel braided inlet hoses: older relative experienced tens of thousands of dollars in water damage when cheap hose ruptured and she wasn't home...not likely, but cheap investment
They also make floodsafe now so they actually shut off the water.
This is what loving your work looks like. Thanks so much!
For dryer that have hot water connections, can I unplug it and leave it open if I don’t use that feature?
Thank you for that help!
