Thank you so much for this, other videos just briefly skim through the wire installation without showing how the wires are installed but this is very detailed and not complicated.
Thank you so much for the video! I understand that the center cord on the three prong is neutral and will always be neutral. However, when it comes to line one and line two I'm not sure which is which. If you flip the cord the other way, the center is always going to be neutral no matter which way you're holding it. But l1 and l2 are going to be in different positions depending on how you're holding the cord. Is there way to know what's the proper way it should be facing? I'm thinking the flat side of the connection should be facing away from you where the center of the crimp should be facing you. Is that correct??

Thank you man ,I didn't know what to do with the white wire inside ( reinstall it with the other new incoming white & proceed as normal... I'll let you know how it went danners on & on it...
Due to many wondering if the small wire connection instructions are correct: The small white or the green with the yellow stripe is the connection/jumper between the center neutral lug and the frame on 3 wire cords only. With a four wire cable you must not use that connection so the wire is put under the neutral screw to hold it out of the way. It is just connected to itself inside the unit. All other green wires connect to the metal cabinet frame.
Yep I learned by this video also re where to put the other white wire .. thanks ! Did you or anyone here have any problem with hooking up the green wire on green screw.? but my green wire does NOT reach to the green screw. Someone told me I can move the screw closer to another hole on back on metal on mach ? I know the green is the ground . I am scared to do that before I get advice.
Thanks for this explanation. My wire is green with yellow stripe and all the examples on line show it as white. Kenmore shouldn't have used a green color when in reality it's neutral. And I know this to be true from the diagram on back of the unit too.
I just attached the 3 wire as we moved into a house with it from a 4 prong. I did as you showed, and after the dryer runs for about 5 or 10 mins, the breaker for that outlet keeps shutting off, and suggestions as to why this takes place? Dryer kicks out heat and functions as it should. I did notice that I had the wires facing the wrong direction, not the correct placement, but the crimps attaching the wire to the actual connector.
You can take an amp draw on the dryer. With an amp probe put it around the red or black wire near the terminal block then run the dryer on timed dry high heat. When heating it should draw right around 24 amps then drop back down when not heating to around 5. If the amp draw is normal I would suspect your breaker is weak or there might be a loose connection in the home wiring. If the Amp draw for the dryer is too high there is a fault in the dryer such as a short that needs to be corrected.
You will need to order a terminal block kit and replace the screw and nut that are stripped. Use what ever parts of the kit you need to get the job done and save the rest for future use if needed. The part number is 279320 and can be bought on Amazon. associate link amzn.to/3xcS0l7
Can you explain what to look for in question of the damaged bolt and nut cross threading you spoke about? I wonder because they have recently attached a 3 prong dryer cord to my new dryer and also have questions about it. Like for example how would I know which is the correct prong to use a 3 or 4? Is it depending on the wall socket capacity only? I'm not very knowledgeable on any of it and I would greatly appreciate some much needed guidance to make sure I know what's going on when the delivery guy hooks up the brand new dryer ordered because the new one received seems to be faulty and I wonder if it's due to this 3 and 4 prong option.. 😮
Sure! When any damage occurs to the nuts or bolts they will not seat correctly. By that I mean the screw will not go in all the way and tighten against the cord. The screws should almost effortlessly go into the nuts. Any resistance means cross threading is likely happening. Cross threading is basically when the screw or nut is not aligned and threads become damaged. You can visibly see this on the threads when it happens. When we talk about prong, it is the cord that matches to the outlet. If you have an outlet with 3 holes you need a 3 prong cord and if you have an outlet with 4 holes you need a 4 prong cord. A 3 prong or 4 prong setup will operate the dryer without issue. Hope this helps!

The neutral wire (the center wire on a flat 3-wire cord, likely labeled neutral on newer cords) MUST go the neutral terminal, which is the center, silver terminal. The 2 "outside" wires on the flat 3-wire cord can (Edit: separately, of course, and NEVER hooked together) go to either side on the terminal block.
My brand new LG dryer with a four prong cable would not turn on until I moved the dryer neutral wire to connect with the green ground wire (like the three prong wiring). My only guess is the house outlet wiring must be incorrect. Umm, is it dangerous to wire it this way?
Our supply line in the Philippines comed with 1 hot wire 220V and neutral. Since neutral wire to neutral terminal, how do i feed L1 and L2 with only one hot 220V wire?
Neutral will always go in the center. L1 and L2 won't matter. If it's still not working after install, might have an issue with power supply or the dryer itself.
The screw should take just a standard 5/16" nut driver. Often they come in multi-packs which is usually the best deal. If you are using a socket wrench I would suggest a 1/4" wrench be used to avoid stripping the screw out.

Hello there Connor. When doing a 3 wire install as long as then neutral is placed in the middle it does not matter where the two outside lines go. This is because L1 and L2 function the same way. we could say that l1 comes off the left side of the transformer and l2 comes off the right side. When both L1 and L2 are used for a power supply you get 240vac. Any time neutral is used it splits the transformer in half and the power supply will now be 120vac. Hope this helps.
I did the 4 wire way and my dryer did not work until I put the white wire that was originally on the ground back to that screw with the green wire, why is that??
I have a question. Does the information in this video apply to the current wiring code in Texas? I only ask because they changed the wiring code a year or two ago, and I want to be sure that if I follow the instructions in this video that I won’t blow out the dryer.
The 4-wire cord is now the new code. This does not change the operation of the unit or how it uses power. It simply provides the unit with a dedicated neutral and ground wire making it safer for the user to operate.
Will the machines ground wire always be connected to the neutral, regardless of housing color? Yours is white, but the ground wire on my machine is green.
@@fredsapplianceacademy on my WPL Calypso dryer the internal wire is actually green with a yellow stripe, not white. The grounding wire on the 4-prong cords is of course white. In this case, do I still put the internal wire with the white wire on the terminal block or do I put that internal wire with the green grounding wire under the green screw? That scenario isn't shown in the video. TYIA
@@ellegee9040 You wrote that the grounding wire on 4-prong cords is of course white. NO, the grounding wire is NOT white. The white wire is the neutral wire. True ground wires are green or bare copper. As for that answer you were waiting for from Fred's, follow their advice and rewatch the video carefully.
@@larrywhited3070 Your just escalating the problem instead of providing a solution. Yes, Elle misspoke by saying "the grounding wire on the 4 prong is of course white. " But Elle still has a valid question: In the video, when he opens the back panel, the single wire connected to the chassis is WHITE! In Elle's situation, like my own, we find it is GREEN w/ yellow instead. We are just wanting to know if we treat this green with yellow wire the same as he does with his white wire in the video.... since you so aptly reiterated green and white are NOT the same. Try understanding the question before critiquing the person asking. I've watched several videos now and no one seems able to give a definitive answer.
This helped me out a lot but now I don’t know what to do with the wire cover plate. When I had the three wire on there it was fire and it just went underneath it but with the larger four wire cable it doesn’t fit. Unlike the one shown in the video where the cover panel doesn’t go over where the cord goes into mine does.
It almost sounds like for some reason the unit was not designed to take a 4 wire cord. But, off the top of my head, I am not sure what type of unit that would be. If it doesn't fit DO NOT force it. Also, make sure you are not installing a range cord that will be larger in gauge making it difficult to install. The cover plate must go on! If the unit will not accept the 4 wire cord install a 3 wire per the video and make sure the cover is put on.
Thanks..didn't know that neutral and ground were pig tailed. Also I have stuffed dishrags ,etc below the wires as a net in case I dropped a screw..great video!
On my Whirlpool Cabrio the holes that the wires screw into seem to have a nut behind them to screw into. Also I don't have the original screws. Can they be purchased at a retailer? Thanks a bunch??
I read - You have a cabrio Did your green wire reach to the green screw? Also do you have a whirlpool cord with circle hooks at end or the fork type ends one? I have former 4 prong cord which has the fork ends. My previous machine was a GE profile . Thinking of buying the amazon whirlpool plug one ? Waiting on a reply from the expert . faucet at the clothes washer I get a shock. Why?
Something is shorted or not wired correctly. Turn off the power off at the breaker and check the wiring at the terminal block to the dryer.
Thank you so much best description I have seen!
I’m a recent widow, thank you for this video!
Strain relief was not with my dryer 😭 is it expensive to replace?
hi there! they're cheap. and you really should make sure it's installed for safety reasons. www.homedepot.com/p/Halex-1-1-4-in-Non-Metallic-NM-2-Piece-Clamp-Connector-2-Pack-26514/100185401?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D27-027_006_CONDUIT_FIT-NA-NA-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-NA&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D27-027_006_CONDUIT_FIT-NA-NA-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-NA-71700000113157690--&gclid=CjwKCAjws9ipBhB1EiwAccEi1DyvRc7Bo7Wsp2W4x3RdHhYkT1mQKmOcYr-_6m7iJDMIXf4eLxZUMxoCRzoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
So does it matter which wires go left and right as long as the middle line goes in middle neutral? And if so could you explain why?
Hello there Connor. When doing a 3 wire install as long as then neutral is placed in the middle it does not matter where the two outside lines go. This is because L1 and L2 function the same way. we could say that l1 comes off the left side of the transformer and l2 comes off the right side. When both L1 and L2 are used for a power supply you get 240vac. Any time neutral is used it splits the transformer in half and the power supply will now be 120vac. Hope this helps.
I did the 4 wire way and my dryer did not work until I put the white wire that was originally on the ground back to that screw with the green wire, why is that??
Thank you so much for this great and easy tutorial!
Thank You very much. I appreciate you and your great instructions, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hi there! Send us a picture at school@fredsappliance.com. We will review and provide some advice. :)
Very straight forward!
My neutral wire on the machine is green- do I still pair the green with the white?
The ground wire is green. Please rewatch the video and follow the instructions for the type of setup you are using.
TYIA
I have the same thing on my dryer and have the same question. Did you ever find the answer?
Thanks for this video. So helpful!!
Thank you so much I was face to this problem. I learned from.
Best one yet. Thank you
Very welcome Jesus. We appreciate the comment.
Ok, my dryer? That white that's separate from the 3 ? Mine is green. Do I leave it and put the green wire from the 4 prong on top of it?
Hi there! Do you have a 3 prong or 4 prong cord?
I’m looking at my dryer now and it’s backwards what do I do? It worked fine need to switch cords
L1 and L2 are interchangeable
my dryer came in with the 3 wire cord, is it possible to change it for a 4 wire cord?
Yep. Just follow the 4 wire steps in the video.
@@fredsapplianceacademy thank you very much, followed the steps in the video and Im currently drying my second load already
@@sinergia4615 awesome! great to hear. :)
does it matter which side goes the black and red wire?
nope!
On my Whirlpool Cabrio the holes that the wires screw into seem to have a nut behind them to screw into. Also I don't have the original screws. Can they be purchased at a retailer? Thanks a bunch??
This is correct. Almost all terminal blocks will have a nut of some kind to drive the screw into.
@@fredsapplianceacademy Thanks for the reply. ACE hardware had what I needed and it's running more. Appreciate the help buddy.
I read - You have a cabrio
Did your green wire reach to the green screw? Also do you have a whirlpool cord with circle hooks at end or the fork type ends one? I have former 4 prong cord which has the fork ends.
My previous machine was a GE profile . Thinking of buying the amazon whirlpool plug one ? Waiting on a reply from the expert .
His videos are great!!
