    As a local guy, I've been going to the Kompressor pub pretty much since it was opened. The food is delicious, but man oh man, the 'I-don't-really-care-if-you-live-or-die' attitude of the staff there is rude even in Estonian standards :).

    So, I´m an Estonian. Let me explain :D It's funny how your experience fully depends on where you go. I feel like older generation (starting from maybe 40+) don't seem friendly and the younger generation is more open, friendly etc. The pancake place, I went myself and was surprised by the robotic and unfriendly service :D You should have gone to the "hipster" part of Tallinn, with younger people haha For Example "Telliskivi Loomelinnak"

  • @terezarychetska2901
    @terezarychetska2901 5 лет назад +3

    aww! i moved to Estonia four months ago and I must say, you got the real Estonian experience with how cold they can be :D they need loads of time to become friendly. Also if someone is planning to use this video as an inspiration for their visit of Tallinn - the hipster part you were looking for was not Kalamaja, but Telliskivi, it's right next to it and it's worth visiting for sure - day and night! :)

Also Estonia was one of (if not the first) to introduce online voting!

    Estonia was actually ranked the best value destinations for 2018 by the Lonely Planet and a lot of tourists come here because of the Old Town and beaches. I love that you went to Kompressor to eat pancakes, I used to love that place but I could never finish the pancakes! (the staff has never been that friendly there, it's weird, but i swear, estonians are generally very nice!) It's also definitely a pancake place, not a crepe place. Crepes are much much thinner :) I wish you guys would have found a local estonian to show you places, for example the place where you saw the view was actually one of the smaller ones that you could go to and it overlooked the wrong way. I wish you had seen the larger one overlooking the entire old town, it's definitely worth it! And instead of Kalamaja you should have put Telliskivi into your google maps, I'm so sorry you didn't get to see the hipster places. We have some pretty amazing hipster bars and cafes there. The kilometer that you were looking for was actually on the other side of the park that you were in. I do hope you come and visit us again in the future! :)

    • @allisonhernandez2534
      @allisonhernandez2534 5 лет назад +8

      It can feel like click bait because who "he" is was not specified in the title. I too thought their host kicked them out. I don't think they meant to make the title into click bait AND if this type of titling continues I'll watch less just out of boredom of the video not delivering on the excitement of the title. Kara and Nate or my new favorite channel though and to stop watching would suck. I'm a super literal person and this is why I'd get bored of the titles not delivering.

    heheh so sweet, i am from estonia. and yeah many eldery and younger estonians can be akward socialaisng, we are still very young country it was until 1991 we cut ties with soviet union where things were rough it wasnt you know much personal development and free will but as goverment told you it is, much like north korea today and most of todays eledrly population lived in that time. but with a younger generation coming up in free country things has got much better and we are just preparing to blossom again as a nation .

    Constructive criticism - something that makes travel blogs/vlogs more interesting is always local insights. In so many of the places you travel, there are really great local bloggers/vloggers (that even do their work in English) and could show you cool, insider-y things. There’s an opportunity to collaborate, which would be mutually beneficial to both parties, and yes it would take some more planning and research ahead of time, but I think it would give a lot more richness and depth to your trips. It would raise the profile of your channel to that person’s audience and theirs to yours.
    I watched your Paris and London stuff, and as a local in those places, I kept thinking “Why did they go there? Why did they do that? It could have been so much cooler” and that’s why a local partnership would be a really interesting dimension to your travel.

    • @charlespointlee
      @charlespointlee 6 лет назад +1

      And maybe the angle of your channel is more travel hacks and stuff, but I think you make great clean content that would be better served with that angle. The ‘we went to X, met local expert and did Y’ rather than just airport lounges, airbnbs, generic tourist locations, ‘these people are nice’ kind of content

For others looking for information about Kalamaja - go to Balti jaama turg (it's a really cool market) and Telliskivi loomelinnak. Everything you want is there. I learned how to drive stick shift in a Land Rover--with a ladder over the top--when I lived in the outback of Australia. They're heart beasts and take a lot of abuse--like driving on the wrong side of the road with the emergency brake on--plumes of white smoke out the back--but still kept on going--and still stayed in one place when using the emergency brake when necessary. Since I kept driving on the "American" side of the rode, my kids eventually refused to ride with me when I was driving.

    Just discovered your channel a few days ago, and I am completely obsessed with it! :D And seeing this just makes me remember the great time I had in Tallinn! Kompressor is just GREAT! Still missing those pancakes! For anyone seeking to discover Tallinn, I would also recommend to take a boat to Helsinki. A very unique experience :)

    I agree ..sometimes it’s great to out of the box. As much I would love to go to Paris, Barcelona or London, I believe the too much tourist will ruined it. It great to go where the local goes, and it wonderful to discover these countries which has been closed to us for many and explore their culture and treasures. Estonia is now on my discover list. P.S.. get Land Rover to sponsor a road trip.

    We locked ourselves out of our Airbnb once in Rome. We were leaving and had to catch a train, and didn’t realize that we needed the key as well for the outside door. So we were stuck in the stairwell between the apartment and the front door for hours while the host reached the housekeeper to let us out. D’oh!

    Estonia has a lot more to offer that you need to come back to...Kopressor has the best pancakes in the world,but the service has never been good there...and the old town is full of tourist traps...Kalamaja is a difficult place,but sorry for you, you didn't go to the seaside, this place is beautiful and there are most hipster cafes, etc.But Estonia will be waiting for you back when this covid is over.Greetings from Estonia

    I know for you young whippersnappers google is everything, but have you guys used the old method of asking where something is?!😎. My wife is the MOST directionally challenged person I've ever met. My 13 year old son calls her Mis direction lol. She refuses to ask for help or directions. Drives us bonkers! Lol. Even in WalMart she won't ask where something is, she just wanders the store trying to find whatever it is she wants! I usually am dying laughing and I end up asking for her!

      In Dec my hubby and I are going to Taiwan and Thailand. We will definitely use Google Maps.

      Much easier to just be specific in Google search and then go to Images if you see nothing on the websites. In this case search for "Tallinn graffiti"

    Hello from Tallinn! Olde Hansa is super fun, but that's really a place where only tourists go as you thought from the other video :D but its fun for experience :) That's sad ofc that you didn't make it to the hipster area. I didn't get what place you guys used for the reference, but Kalamaja was just a region or area like city center, its huge. That place should have said Telliskivi Loomelinnak - that's where the cool stuff and restaurants where. I'm so bummed they didn't direct you guys to the right place :) Have safe travels !

    The market in the Raekoja plats is quite a tourist trap- about 95% stuff sold there has nothing to do with Estonia nor is it made in Estonia and is super over priced. Kultuuri Kilomeeter was way off from the point where you were, should have entered "Linnahall" to Google maps and you would have been in the start of the Culture km in no time. Sadly not much solid information in the internet about Tallinn I guess. It'll get better on time (except this year, 2020 is cancelled everywhere..)
