I travelled alone to Moscow, St Petersburg, Tallinn, Helsinki and Reykjavik in May this year and so surprised that I love Moscow the most!! Russian does not looks the most friendly by appearance but they are very helpful!! There are guys who just came forward to help me with my huge luggage up the stairs to the metro or train station and just walked away without even giving me a chance to say thanks. And despite most do not speak English, they will try to help when been approached and somehow we can communicate with 2 different languages. Amazing affordable country with a very manageable metro and train system for solo traveller.
Fran nijntje Hi sorry to hear about your experience. As a Chinese female travelling alone and not knowing a single word of Russian, I am really lucky having met very nice people during my trip in both Moscow and St Petersburg. In fact, I do not have anything bad to say about both places. Just to share, I also had my meal at Mac next to Yaroslavsky station and I left my sunglasses in Mac washroom. Only discovered my loss half way in the metro back to my hotel. Went back to find and surprised that the cleaner kept it and she returned me my sunglasses when I used hand sign of spectacles to her. In Kremlin, the lady in the queue behind me offered translatation so no problem for me. Also I took some traditional costume photoshoot in a studio in St Petersburg. The boss and his wife upon seeing me limping (as I had a fall), they not only drove me back to my hotel, they even drove me to pharmacy to purchase some ointment and bandage. And they suggested and drove me around on an impromptu 2 hrs night tour of SP at 9pm.
El HM Loh Fran is telling the truth. That's how it is in russia, especially if you're not white. Dunno why you're confibbing, but don't be giving people any ideas of how wonderful moscow is while in reality it is the wild west and might cost you your life. Moscow has the highest murder rate of any big city in Europe, and if you're not white your chances of being offed are exponentially higher.
Tal What I am sharing is really my personal experience in Russia when I was there for 1 week+ in end Apr/May. Everyone has their own travelling experience and I am not the only one with good experience in Russia.
Вы такие прикольные , я случайно попала на Ваш канал . Плохо знаю английский и через раз понимаю о чем Вы говорите ))))) Спасибо, за то что показали нашу страну Вашими глазами !!!!
I think the most convenient way to get to the city center is an Aeroexpress train - 30 minutes and about 7 dollars and you're in the heart of Moscow :)
just wanna say thank you for posting videos so often, i'm sure its tough, but it is just SOO awesome seeing you guys videos.. such an adventure, just thanks for sharing your experiences with us
There are trains called AeroExpress from all of Moscow Airports to railway stations which are mostly placed in the city center. It takes for about 40min and costs $15. And one more thing - you dont stay at the left side of the escalator in moscow metro, this where people walks.
I used to use the Aero Express but with luggage it is troublesome. Now I use the Yandex Taxi app. The problem is I don't get SMS / Text on the international / non-Russian number. If traveling with little luggage that you can easily haul I'll prefer Aero Express.
We flew on Aeroflot in 1993!! This was so fun to watch. We actually went over the north pole both ways to and from the US. I'm excited to watch your Russia videos, I think they will make me feel nostalgic for my summer there.
Guys... I'm STOKED to see Russia! It's one of those places that seems so far away that you'll never get there... but so fascinating. I can't wait to see what it's like!
I know this was several years ago, but I recently found you. I went to Russia in 1991. I was stationed in Germany at the time. Flew Aeroflot from Munich to St. Petersburg and then took the overnight train to Moscow. Still remember the first time I saw the Kremlin and St. Basil cathedral. Took my breath away and I couldn’t believe I was there. Amazing to go to the Pushkin art museum in Moscow and see their Matisse collection and go to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. I love watching your videos and reminisce.
That's so weird, you were in my hometown. I live in Europe now, so it's especially nice to see Moscow :) Btw for 10 dollars you could take a train which goes directly to the center of the city, so you don't have to lose time in traffic
Tal I get that they wanted the experience, but they said there's also an express bus, which is more expensive, and you still end up stuck in traffic, so I just wanted to mention the train option too ;)
Nate can be quite particular about things, so (sorry) whenever things go wrong, I find myself laughing along with him. So funny! Thanks for the comic relief, Nate! Hope you recovered from that chair!
So here I am again binge watching your vlogs... been following you since the start of your travel.. you guys are my fav couple on you tube 🙂.. God bless ❤️
Love the song and you guys def have a different kind of love, very special! Never considered travel to east Europe except Poland cause I'm familiar with the culture but after seeing the last few vlogs my interest has piqued. Love the small, picturesque towns.
I'd be so sick of travel..lol But I'm older...lol worked 35 yrs in health care raised 2 awesome kids and married to their daddy still.42 yrs... And now enjoying just being in our new RV. ...big enough for our 3 wonderful grandchildren to stay"... I love our slow life...but like to see videos of travel once in awhile"....but makes me so grateful for our slower life's for sure... God bless.
I would love to do the Trans Siberian Railway! My husband was horrified when I asked him if he would like to do it though. So I'll just enjoy it through you guys!
It's one of my fav city's so far. Check the tube stations, red square, go to see Lenin if it's still open, is for free. But I'm sure you will find tips what to do :-D
I love Russia!! The people are so awesome. I went 7 times with mission teams from my church and would go back tomorrow! You need to go back to Russia and visit St. Petersburg.
Visit the Bolshoi theatre and have lunch in mymy, cheapest place for good food :-D go on the highest tower in Europe. Been there for 9 days, visited the whole city. Head a local guide :-D
There is the Aeroexpress non-stop train to and from every airport to the center of the city... I never even heard of a "bus"... Looks like it took you to the nearest subways station... That's a little adventeruous haha
An episode where you guys really didn't do anything but somehow it's still really good and entertaining to watch. Good job. BTW, what editing software do you use for your vlog, please?
@karaandnate I so totally love you guys and your channel. Nate your veins are totally popping out of your arms! For 2 years of holding that heavy camera no doubt! Mmmm I'm needing toned arms may take up vlogging! LOL!
It's great to see you so excited. :) But exactly as excited you are going to Moscow, Russia exactly the same excitement I feel now because I'm going to San Diego, California. :) :) :) California dreamin... :) Maybe I should look in to the vlogg of your friends that you stayed with last time you were in the US. I forgot the name of their vlogg though... :(
Here is a tidbit of info @karaandnate about those escalators in Moscow. The reason that they are so high and the subway is so deep is that the subways were originally designed to be nuclear fallout shelters when the subways were built during the Cold War. While the Soviet Union was in power, no one was allowed to take pictures in the subway without permission and permits!!
You're both right and wrong. The escalators are indeed high (on some stations, mainly in the city center), and they are indeed designed to be uses for shelters if needed, but the shelter thing is not the REASON for them to be deep, it's the EFFECT of them being deep. K&N go out at "Kuznetsky Most" station (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuznetsky_Most_(Moscow_Metro)). The name translates as "Blacksmiths' Bridge" and it's called a bridge for a reason. There is a river (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neglinnaya_River) that has been put in a tube underground and built over, but it's still there. And the ground is not strong enough for the metro to be shallow, so it has to be deep for purely engineering reasons. If you check the map and the dates, you'll see that although "Kuznetsky Most" station was opened in 1975, it is connected to another station called "Lubyanka" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubyanka_(Moscow_Metro)) that was built in 1935, long before the nuclear fallout threat appeared. Of course, since they've built the deep underground facilities anyway, it would have been wasteful not to make them available as a shelter, during WW2 first, and then re-equip against the newly identified fallout threat once that threat came around.
I've been there 3 times and loved it every time. The escalators seem like they go on forever. Last was in 14 it's really cool. I got to go with friends and we had a blast.
1) Not older than New york trains. 2) these trains are still good and reliable and 3) at least there is wi-fi there in Moscow metro even in London there isnt. And BTW there are new trains too... In last year about about 50 new metro stations were built in Moscow.
You have a cool channel, I have not watched all the series from Russia yet, I hope you visited St. Petersburg. This is the cultural capital of Russia, it is very beautiful.
I know things are different now. But as Americans was this trip hard to make happen? Were customs and immigration for arriving and departing Russia difficult?
For the visa, you need a a local to “sponsor” you and vouche for you. That alone can be a lot of work if you don’t go through a travel company. You need to prebook all your hotels and flight out. There’s a few blogs that explain way better.
Hey guys, as always great vlogs! FYI (I'm sure you already know) the last few vlogs look pretty washed out. Kara, #ThereIsAFilterForThat! C'mon bring on the contrast! Love your latest adventures! You're prob back in Asia by now.
"Subscribe to the channel and you'l be speaking Russian in no time" Nate at the gate about to board a plane to Russia, and THAT'S as close as anyone can get to learning in "no time" lol
Great vlog, Kara & Nate!! Love seeing your excitement for Russia and your adventures on travel days. It looked like you checked your away bags on the flight. Do you usually check them or carry them on to avoid fees? And, do you recommend traveling with the away ("carry-on" or "bigger carry-on)? Thanks!
I don’t know if you’ve been there but Zhukovsky International airport in Moscow (pronounced mosco) it’s one terminal and you can walk the entire length of it in under 3 minutes
Great trip watch out for that light hanging in the entrance proberly left over from the KGB loaded with cameras and microphones era ha ha looking or ward to see in Moscow stay safe

My husband and I toured Tallin and then St. Petersburg in 2014. He actually proposed to me there! Your video is bringing back some fun memories!
just wanna say thank you for posting videos so often, i'm sure its tough, but it is just SOO awesome seeing you guys videos.. such an adventure, just thanks for sharing your experiences with us

Love that local tip! Another reason RUclips is so great for travelers :)
they said they knew about the direct train, but had decided to go with the most difficult option just for the experience.
Tal I get that they wanted the experience, but they said there's also an express bus, which is more expensive, and you still end up stuck in traffic, so I just wanted to mention the train option too ;)
А Москва уже не в Европе?
Moscow is in Europe, dorogaya
I only went to St. Petersburg, so am looking forward to your take on Moscow and the Trans Siberian also a bucket list for me.
Yey! Russia!
we laughed throughout the video. It's so strange to look at Moscow from the your side !!!
I love Russia so much one of my favorite countries I've ever been to.
I agree, the wheels of your luggages are super tough. You drag them on every road....wow! But still not broken! Great bags.
