I have literally just started watching these videos and I feel like I learned more from him than I did in school. I start my stylist job on Tuesday and I feel he's made me more comfortable cutting. His videos great, great explaining, great lighting and you see everything he is doing. He has good quality videos compared to others that I have seen
You have imparted to me the valuable life skill of cutting my own hair with proper technique and understanding. I have stopped visiting my hairstylist since 2020. While it isn't my wish to see hairstylists out of business, for those who have trouble manipulating tools to their own heads, I hope they will get more satisfying hairstyles because stylists are upskilling themselves thanks to quality education like this! P.S. I hope you will consider doing the advertisements at the end of your videos because while I have your videos on a playlist, it can be frustrating having to revisit the vids each time and find the start point of the tutorial. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion generously, and doing such a smashing job Matt!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! This is the PERFECT balance between fullness at the bottom and too many layers at the top. It is a nice slightly rounded silhouette to the hair without harsh dropoffs in the layers. Also, just my experience, this cut works well for my heavy, curly hair to prevent pyramid shape or big round helmet shape if I want to wear it curly. I have been trying to achieve this effect without success with various hairdressers for 2 decades. They always start the layering too low on the head. Finally about 10 years ago, I just started cutting my own layers after getting a straight edge on the bottom from the salon....not great results but better than the heavy bottom or heavy top layered cuts I have gotten in the past. Hopefully I can find a skilled hairdresser using your locator website who can watch this video and use thier skill to adapt it to my hair/head. LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!
I just discovered your channel the other day when looking for a tutorial on how to cut layers into my mom's super thick, course hair (I'm a cosmetology student) and I watched your tutorial right before she came and used the diagrams throughout the cut and it turned out amazingly. You're a great teacher, I'd kill to have you as an instructor. Consider me a new fan and forever grateful!
Great Tutorial, as always. I love the way you keep all the weight in the bottom of the cut and how seamless it looks when completed. Watching your videos is like being given a present every day for me. You have no idea how grateful I am to people like you. Thank you so much...
Beautiful! Thanks Matt for paying such close attention to detail, and for taking the time to share it with us! The love you have for your job really shows!
Hi guys just wanted to take the time out to big up Pivot Point for the mannequins head and mizutani and everyone else who helped in making these videos possible. I am learning alot and it won't be possible without them. Matt and the crew keep doing the great job that u are doing i really appreciate it alot. Thanks guys more blessings on you.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE #hairstory 1) my scalp doesn't get itchy, and i didn't notice it was an issue before or after until i stopped using the shampoo (since I gave about a 1/3 of it to a friend (who works as a model, and I thought it would benefit her) 2) i love that i can wash my hair every three days, and i still feel comfortable going out in public 3) it smells soooo good, i've seriously been pavlovian'ed into having happy 'feels'. 3) my hair has ALWAYS felt really course and dry, i was always looking for good haircare products. 4) my hair never looked or felt better. it seriously helps bring out the best! in my hair. my hair used to feel really silky after contitioning, but it also was super flat and boring. oh! the best part, ONLY ONE BOTTLE! saves space in the shower stall! and no need to buy a conditioner. i know i seriously sound like an evangelist, but people really gotta try it! i love it! i wanna buy it for everyone because I love it THAT much!
Wow! I stubbled upon this video when doing some research before my work day today! It's so great! I am an apprentice in a salon and I have two models coming in today for long layers. Even though I know I can execute the cut perfectly, I still have butterflies about it. This video was so helpful in making me feel confident in the cut I pictured in my mind!
tried this haircut on my mother the other day. she has super fine hair and is always trying to add volume so I suggested trying this cut and she loves it. thank you for your amazing in depth tutorials.
I absolutely love this! I have medium thick, baby fine hair that's a pain to cut. It takes forever and shows every flaw when cut wrong. I'm excited to try this on myself. Just lovely!
Great video I have a lot of hair but it is baby fine so there is a difference. I am so excited many are including us hair challenged people.Every time I look up hairstyles for fine hair it comes up with fine hair styles. It been hard and a lot of trial and error finding information. I am so happy to be acknowledged finally and given options. Thanks so much!
This haircut is the best ever!!! I watched the whole video like 5 times and then went and did it on my beautiful client, myself. 😆 It turned out stunning! I went to beauty school but changed to fashion after 1 year. That being said I keep learning about hair and styling as much as I can because I love it. I had some help for the back but Omg I am a new person. I love this so much, thank you!!!!!!! Now I have to subscribe so I can binge watch your videos 🤗🤗
With the layers at the front, I always get a triangle section pointing towards the crown and take the angle parallel to the nose. I find in my hair, it always softens the layers up around my face beautifully. I have really fine hair so I don't cut the layers much on the bottom.
+katie stokoe that would basically have the same effect. The difference is towards the point in the back you would be getting less layers than I did. That's why I continued my Section back into the crown. Thanks for posting your process. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Beautiful! I had an amazing stylist in Alabama. I live in Colorado now and haven't found a great stylist yet. This video reminds me how my old stylist used to do my hair.
you are Awesome..Ur style and technique is like nothing I have ever encountered I actually enjoyed and learned some skills from you.. keep them posting..Great job..
if I face framed after I cut the base do I have to use that as a reference for my layers or can i just cut this exact cut and then do a face frame. THanks
I really like your videos. Our classes are online now and some teachers linked your videos for us to refer to. Also what type of flat iron was that again?
I have fine but thick hair. should I use this technique or the one from thick hair with layers? can someone with the similar hair type reply on what works best for u?.
I have fine hair and love the cut. what I would add is bangs hitting the eyebrows. you did a choppy bang in a different video that was interesting. choppy short at the hairline and then longer over that. don't like bangs in my eyes. and some face framing. is there any way to add a little puff at the top crown. I'm not a hair stylist. have you done a video on this kind of cut. I like shoulder length hair and also some versitility wearing the hair in a 60's flip. don't always do a flip but it's fun to do and have that option. I sometimes will also use hot rollers for puff and volume.
I'm really starting to understand over direction horizontal and vertical cuttng. I'm pretty confident to do this haircut it'd just one problem understand placement. Did he start layering at the crown ? Going to watch the parting part a couple more times, this is where my problem lays understanding different parts of the skull I keep studying it but its just not clicking oh jimmy crickets I'll get it
Literally thank you so much for making these videos !! I love learning new techniques I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge! Keep the videos coming !!
This works on longer hair. My hair is nearly to my butt, I trim it about three inches then use this sort of technique to get a bit of layer in. Works well and continues to look great as it grows out. I just add a little bit of face frame and cut my bangs to balance it out against the length.
Thank you so much for your videos.. Really help me out to chose one for me. but one thing I wanna know is 'how to grow beard?' I am 22 and still not beard!! just lill 10-12 strands under chin. please help me for this..
My hair is really fine and thus doesn't have volume at all. Even if I try anything (like blow drying it with my head upside down, using products, teasing it etc...) it would just loose any texture within 1h. Once I tried to curle it to create more of a texture or volume... but nope, curles just fade out. Same when I had my hair like shoulder length and I wanted to blowdry it in a way that it would "frame" my face (does someone understand what I mean?) ... but my hair just keeps loosing all of its texture, giving me a look like I just straighten it with a hot iron :) What hairstyle would suit best for such gravity loving hair? A long bob? Some kind of layers somewhere? I never know what to tell a hair dresser and somehow they dont seem to have the best ideas too (or I always just get the worng ones).... I live in germany and have actually no idea where good hair dressers are :D
I know you posted this 4 months ago but I had the same problem and I got it cut into a long bob which was layered and my hair gain so much texture and volume!
Sebastiana Ruisi I have the same isue, now i have a layered bob on cheek length and it's sooo much better. I'm just looking for the right bang right now.
Exactly. I have fine hair, too, and stylists always just blunt cut it one length and don't bother trying to create volume by layering just the very top. My hair ends up being heavy on the bottom and flat on top. It's frustrating that so many stylists are terrible. Is it the education they get or they aren't really cut out for being a stylist and it's just a job for them.
I wish that every stylist knew how to cut and layer fine hair as in this video . BUT nope 90% will layer the bottom and the sides into the top and mess it up . I have fine hair and hate to let anyone cut it because of this .
I have had $30 cuts to $200. They screw up my hair every time Also the foils I have gotten and paid big bucks for, they screw up. My solution, education for myself, as I also worked in dentistry, I can work backwards in a mirror no problem. At times I have found a couple people that can get my bottom length up. But then I go home and finish the cut and foil my own hair. It turns out perfect for me. I practiced foiling on a friend first. The first time I didn't have the energy to cut her hair after. So she went to her stylist and the stylist asked "who did your foil? You don't want me to do it?" My friend said, "I know, it's probably bad. It's my friend in her garage." The stylist said "are they a stylist?" "No, that is why it probably looks bad then." "NO it looks perfect. That's why I thought you were kidding" So then I switched to doing it to myself. The gal that shortens my lemgth always says my foils look great too. So happy. Never looked back. Saved my friend and I a LOT of money. I don't mind having people do it. But I have had it destroyed so many times I just gave up. Im digging these videos of his.
Yes yes! An amswer. I cut clients hair last week and wasn't happy with It. She had really long very fine hair but the layers made it look more fine. I felt terrible as I'm a new stylist I thought I done somethi g wrong
Good morning, I'm Brazilian and would like to congratulate your work. I always follow your work. I would like to see long-haired corter. Thanks for everything. You are the best.
Hi, I am from South Africa and I enjoy your vids, I am learning alot. Could you perhaps place a vid on how to cut long thick natural curly hair into layers please
I always have ladies who have really long hair asking for a bunch of layers. They want shorter layers for volume and have it all blended. How would you do that?
I think what they are asking is for a haircut like this one... If I am not wrong.... That problem is that if they have lost of hair like he said. That type of haircut would not suit them because it will create lots of volume like a lions mane lol
Holy heck! You are amazing, seriously sparked new and exciting interest in me for the business I love, I'm in transition in my care and you make me feel like I can do it at 50 plus of age!! Thank you....makes me want to purchase everything and learn all these cuts! I cannot wait to try hairstory and get my cutting comb! What did you think of the new wash?

Thank you! I was starting to give up until I read your post.
Thank you so much!!!! I wasn't at all interested in the mannequin chat ...
Love it! It has both the benefits of a blunt cut and a layered cut for us fine haired ladies. And Pivot Point is the best.
tried this haircut on my mother the other day. she has super fine hair and is always trying to add volume so I suggested trying this cut and she loves it. thank you for your amazing in depth tutorials.
This cut really makes my fine hair thick and it flows really well. I've had so many compliments, thanks so much
Omg I thought I was the only one that cut thin hair like this... Love your work...have an amazing day... 💙😀🙏🏻
I absolutely love this! I have medium thick, baby fine hair that's a pain to cut. It takes forever and shows every flaw when cut wrong. I'm excited to try this on myself. Just lovely!

I really enjoy all the education you provide on this channel. Thank you. Quick, pertinent and well presented.
When you're cutting the front hair, are you cutting it the same length as the bottom? Like is the bottom hair the guide line for the front hair?
Yes that's what I'm asking as well where's the guideline to this lovely cut
LOVE THIS! It's exactly what I want in my fine/thin hair, but haven't been able to articulate. Thank you!
How can I describe this to my hair dresser
Creations By Kayla send them the video in advance
Email it or message it to here on Face Book! If not take your I Pad or lap top and then pull it up when you go to her!
Creations By Kayla I was going to ask the same thing.
My hairdresser ruined my hair for years, I asked for this, and got a very ugly Rachel greens haircut 💇 uff
Awesome video, I look forward to watching these everyday and taking it back to the salon. Thanks Matt!
+TwistedJess281 thank you!

Beautiful! I had an amazing stylist in Alabama. I live in Colorado now and haven't found a great stylist yet. This video reminds me how my old stylist used to do my hair.
We only use pivot point in our school, they are the best! And have a great selection of diverse mannequins with great quality
Matt you have re ignited my passion for cutting hair.
This is great! What if I did this but to make the ends wispy I use the thinning scissor?
you are Awesome..Ur style and technique is like nothing I have ever encountered I actually enjoyed and learned some skills from you.. keep them posting..Great job..
So when you cut the top back layers, are you working at 90 degrees or straight off the head?
The haircut so beautiful!! Thank you for your tutorial!

if I face framed after I cut the base do I have to use that as a reference for my layers or can i just cut this exact cut and then do a face frame. THanks

Thank's Matt for your daily vlog, really appreciate your enthusiasm and dedication to share your knowledge with others. I have learnt heaps 😊
I really like your videos. Our classes are online now and some teachers linked your videos for us to refer to. Also what type of flat iron was that again?
thank you so much for all of your education videos! I was wondering if you could do a video with a natural kinky curly haircut ?
So even if she parts on the side, you still do the cut with a middle part? Will this make the layers look uneven?
u r an inspiration, so talented,so honest God bless you Matt Beck
I love this cut ! I have very fine hair but still want the volume with layers.......I wish I could see you do the same cut but with a fringe bang.
luv that you take the time to show and explain new stuff! thank you for sharing your time and knowledge!
+73riv you're welcome! Thanks for watching 👍🏻

Cheryl Johnson I think it was the grunge bang look.
I'm really starting to understand over direction horizontal and vertical cuttng. I'm pretty confident to do this haircut it'd just one problem understand placement. hi Matt is the New Wash line by the original owner and stylist who started Bumble Bumble in NYC?
what kind of style do you recommend for fine but long hair past mid back? too afraid to cut hair this short....😞
Yajahira Anderson Seriously, that's what you're afraid of?!? It's hair, it grows back.
This works on longer hair. My hair is nearly to my butt, I trim it about three inches then use this sort of technique to get a bit of layer in. Works well and continues to look great as it grows out. I just add a little bit of face frame and cut my bangs to balance it out against the length.
I need this haircut. Your technique from wet, cut, dry, style & products. Going to show my stylist.
this would so work for my aging hair all while looking current. wonder what you would do for coliring
Wonderful haircut!!!! I love it!!! It"s beautiful
Very unique technique not that much hair also wasted u have maintain the density also and length also amazing😍
I love it, but what type of cut do you recommend for thick heavy hair
How would curly/wavy hair look with this cut?

Downloaded the app but there isn't an option to link back to you.
What difference would you make in the front sectioning/direction in cutting (etc ) if your client wanted this look but with light face framing layers?
do u make a beginning guide for the layers in the back or did u create it when u did the first section
Exactly what I'm trying to figure out I need this cut how did he get the guideline for the front or top of hair
what if you want height on the top and the fine hair goes flat
easy?
LOVE this cut. Wore my hair like this for years.... I am (was) a Beck...
Do you have more style cuts for fine hair?
Fantastic hair cut very simple and straightforward love the thick ends.
Hi ! Where I can buy training head can you give me the link? Please!
Can you adjust this for a triangular cut?
Is there a particular brand of polishing brush you like?
You made it easy to understand. Its a great hair cut . Thank you ........

Ich hab das selbe problem:(
Sebastiana Ruisi SAME OMG
I know you posted this 4 months ago but I had the same problem and I got it cut into a long bob which was layered and my hair gain so much texture and volume!
Sebastiana Ruisi I have the same isue, now i have a layered bob on cheek length and it's sooo much better. I'm just looking for the right bang right now.

@ladybug Gomez Yeah that's y later hair become more thin from down
Yes yes! An amswer. I cut clients hair last week and wasn't happy with It. She had really long very fine hair but the layers made it look more fine. I felt terrible as I'm a new stylist I thought I done somethi g wrong
Does he have a video on how to cut fine hair really short?
Excellent tutorial haircuts.demonstrated very clear. I learned a lot. Thank you
What if you have dense hair on bottom but fine hair on top?
we actually watched this so my mom will get the right cut. Thanks for this! plus you look like my friend in PH haha
Good morning, I'm Brazilian and would like to congratulate your work. I always follow your work. I would like to see long-haired corter. Thanks for everything. You are the best.
Any chance on a super short bob, borderline pixie on fine hair?
This is exactly the cut I want. How do I go about explaining this to a stylist?
I love this hairstyle it's my go too. I learned new techniques and I've been doing it on my own. Thank you for sharing
is the one length technique done in salons
great cut for fine hair. matt very interested in hair story products but I'm in uk, will you be selling them at some point?
My three year old has fine hair and this will be perfect for her, and me to practice. Thanks Matt!
I wish I could just go to you for this cut after watching this lol
Hi, I am from South Africa and I enjoy your vids, I am learning alot. Could you perhaps place a vid on how to cut long thick natural curly hair into layers please
Omg, the way you use your scissors 😍😍😍😍
love your videos learning so much thank you! would love some different cutting techniques /tips and styles on curly hair? 😊
I love New Wash. I use it on myself and love the experience and results.
+Myriam Muhammad cool thanks for the feedback!
Does it matter if your guest has some natural curl and or wave to their fine hair? For this cut?
+Mary Thurman it shouldn't. You may want to add some side low elevation layers to the bottom if it looks to disconnected.
Thanks! Love your vlogs ;)
