His Holiness the Dalai Lama's advice on how to deal with negative emotions during his meeting with a group of young women at his residence in Dharamsala, HP, India on April 27, 2018.
To be able to just "pray something away", means that person is still not wanting to take personal responsibility for themselves and their own lives, and still wanting to rely on some magical shortcut, religion, someone else or some higher external power to be responsible for your own salvation. Such people will always need some authority or God to be responsible for everything good in their lives...or else for someone, something or even the Devil to be responsible for every selfishness, suffering or negativity that they themselves create in their own lives, here on Earth.
Do you use religions as nothing but a self-centered emotional clutch and comfort, rather than an altruistic means to be able to serve and love people around you better? I think this world is really all about appearances...all the appearances that each and every one of us use to escape from facing the intense emptiness and lack within ourselves. Not realizing that this infinite emptiness within us is nothing but a grand illusion created and based upon selfish desires.
I saw him at Glastonbury Festival and I actually started to cry, tho I’m not religious or usually an overly emotional person, he just gave me such a beautiful warm feeling. Then 100,000 of us sang him Happy Birthday for his 80th - it’s one of my most special memories ☺️
Transcribing this video because it's sometimes hard to understand accoustically: Negative emotions are mainly related to two things. 1) Self centered attitude (I, I, my, my, me, me) 2) We accept reality as it appears. The theory of Selflessness and Emptiness : "Nothing exists as it appears" Since all negative emotion is based on appearances, once you realize, that nothing exists as it appears, the negative emotions will pass. The wisdom and altruism side are the antitode of self-centeredness.
It simply means...You See what your mind wants to..... Every thing has two Sides...One You See...or You Want to See....while other is Reality....which is The Truth...👌
His point is essentially that if you want to rid yourself of negative thoughts, you have to remove your selfishness and narcissistic personality, together with the prejudice and arrogance that makes you think that you perceive the world as it is and not as it appears. Clear your mind from those two issues and negative thoughts will cease to haunt you.
He said the appearances of realities (harsh painful or angering appearances) are empty by nature of interdependant arising (nothing is independant of its environement). the self centered thought and the reaction to negative appearing situations are mistaken realities. Feeling seperate from external appearances and their causes leads to negative self thought
These are my deduction 1, nothing appears as it exist is really true in this social media world where everyone present things much more better than its really is. 2.. when we think of our own self as if the world revolves around us it become very heavy to bear sometimes. But when we think of millions of people who are much in worst situations than us than we may find some sort of reason to carry on again, this have similar consonance with Gandhiji's talisman. Hope i make some sense.. if more elaboration needed i will happily obliged
he's talking about sunyata / emptiness, he means nothing has a 'soul' or essence and can be broken down into its constituent parts. this includes objects, there is no essence of 'table-ness' in a table - it can be broken down into wood and nails, originating from the trees and ore they were sourced from; then divided again chemically, then atomically, then sub-atomically, etc. likewise, we can apply the same to emotions such as suffering - layers of conceptual reality can be stripped away so suffering is broken into its constituent parts (such as fear, anger, sadness) and then these states can be broken down into categories depending on the particular flavour of them such as 'negative judgement' and 'strong sensation'; by doing this we are able to truly know from an experiental point of view that these states are not based on anything substantial, they're illusionary and when each part is separated, the illusion evaporates. by acknowledging our emotions fully, we make peace with them.
It really helps to meditate. When you start to see your mind wander, automatically pulled by desire and aversion, you start to get a glimpse of anatta (non-self). There is no self that is in charge in your mind. Meditation helps train the mind to reduce the hold of this maya(illusion/delusion) of self . As self weakens life becomes peaceful and content.
I can feel his vibes, when I visited one of its land in my country India. Spiti valley - The lama land and it's people are just beautiful. It was one of the experience of my life where I realised that even without having mobile networks for many days we can still travel and explore. 🙏
Mehenaj Tabassum yes and thinking of others is what will bring you happiness. If you care about your own happiness, care about the happiness of others but if you want to be unhappy then remain selfish and think only of yourself.
There’s a fine line between his response and gaslighting though. If someone hurts you and then try’s to convince you that it is not as it appeared and you’re being self centred, you should definitely consider the validity of that perspective.
beswick1111 you do know his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama doesn't run this channel right? These videos are meant to educate people. I'll just say - nothing exists as it appears :) as his holiness would say.

So right. Negative emotions are from our temptation to feel unjustly treated - I, me, my was offended, etc. altruism is the antidote. #2 - If we accept things as they appear. Nothing is as it seems so if we get curious as to what this might actually be or what it actually means, then we can’t feel negative either - we feel curious. Main takeaway, be more giving and more curious constantly to be happy. 👍🏻💪🏼❤️

His answer is philosophical and reasonable rather than just advising her to "pray it away".
at sweepopolis I believe in a higher power, but I do appreciate learning there are actions I can take to alleviate my suffering.
this is more life-changing and powerful than praying to an unsure diety.
