5 Hindrances 1. Sensual desire (pleasures & distractions) 2. ill will (negative mind) 3. Slothful body & mind (lack of energy, lack of motivation) 4. Restlessness (worry about the future or regret about the past, unable to stay in the present) 5. Skeptical doubt (indecisiveness) Each of these hindrances is placing a dark cloud on your mind. Solution: Align and structure your life to prevent these hindrances from arising. 4 Steps to remove these Hindrances 1. Recognize (what state of mind you’re in) 2. Accept (accept and allow situations and people to be the way it is/they are) 3. Investigate (your emotional & mental state) - “why did it come up?” “what is the consequence if I remain in that state?” 4. Non identification (practice “I’m not the body, I’m not mind, I’m not my emotion, I can just see all these 3 aspects about me”)
Five hinderance is clearly specified in the sutras, and the ONLY solution, also specified, is four foundations of mindfulness. However, his solution is totally unheard of from Buddhism.
It's not really. Not downplaying anything. But when you consider what the word amazing really describes he's just being present. The amazing thing is that people need fillers.
@Vincent Clay Thank you for the suggestion. I already know about Toastmasters. I used to live in Denver. They obviously are successful at their goal. But I feel their process is more focused on the effects, the results. I feel like it's like cheerleading. The stimuli is external (world championship of public speaking?). I always try to approach things from a spiritual perspective.
Took some notes for myself and now sharing them for anyone who might find them valuable :) 5 Hindrances to Self-Mastery 1. Sensual desire (sight/touch/taste/smell/hearing) = Am I addicted? 2. Ill will / aversion = Am I feeling a negative emotion? 3. Dullness / heaviness = Am I unmotivated? 4. Restlessness = Is my mind jumping from though to thought? 5. Sceptical doubt = Am I indecisive? Rain (is the solution) Recognise which one you're experiencing Accept that's what you're experiencing Investigate why you're experiencing it Non-identify with that experience: 'i am not the body, i am not the mind, i am not my emotion' I wish the talk would go on for longer and if he could share stories of people overcoming each of them :)
Sensual mind Negative mind Slothful mind Unsettled mind Skeptical doubt "Align and structure your life in a way to prevent these hindrances" 1. Recognize 2. Accept 3. Investigate 4. Non-Identity There are 2 mistakes along the way to mastery 1. Not starting 2. Not going all the way
There is a sixth hindrance, most agree: Greed. This is desire; as in the desire for things to be other than they are actually and right now. In prison I learned "it's all right here." Or as another remarked, the greatest obstacle to happiness is our idea that there's a way things should be.

"If any of you chooses to climb that path to clarity, I will be happy to meet you at the peak." I've never heard anything so confident ever before in my life. Best Ted Talk I've seen.
Almost 14 years ago I participated in a program in the Shaolin temple where he used to live. This guy taught me proper meditation and breathing skills and shared his story with me. Absolutely fantastic person with an unbelievable amount of discipline and a mind which is the strongest I've ever encountered. One time the other 3 guys who were in the temple and I couldn't keep up with him and the monks and we fell behind during the morning routine. As punishment we had to do 500 push ups which sounded completely unreal but he said we won't get to eat unless we finished it. He said all this in a very calm voice and we just did it. He taught me how to achieve anything if you're disciplined and calm enough. 非常谢谢师父!
He means - not physically - you & him are one.. a reflection of each other. The peak is a metaphor for losing the ego.. something that has destroyed the essence of existence ❤️🙏

It's just not everyone really realizes this and keeps repeating the same mistakes.

@@11soWoo No one's EGO can climb that mountain. Think about it. How can You meet anyone at the peak? Obviously, when You are there - it is not already You and definitely not the Master.
@@tubomania in case you didn’t get it, the story of the travelers and the mountain is a metaphor to symbolize personal growth, so it’s not a literal mountain. That’s what his whole speech is about. You’re not gonna meet the master or anybody there. He also mentioned 5 hindrances, I think you’re victim to 2-3 of them either a skeptical doubt or negative mind/aversion or both. The master mentioned 2 types of travelers, what he didn’t mention is a 3rd traveler, that’s you 😂😆 Let me put it this way- You have people that work hard to get to where they are at in life to achieve their own goal and overcame the 5 hindrances. Then you also have people that depends on others to achieve that goal. You also have people that think the goal is impossible and doesn’t quite get it and chooses not to have any goal at all. The master’s story is one of many symbolisms. You can apply it to any scenario and the rules still apply. Let me give another one, I have friends that are MD from med school because thy studied hard and didn’t need anyone’s help and wasn’t born with a silver spoon, i also have friends that were sociable and had help in finishing their education via study groups/family/friends support, and then I also have friends that goes “college is not for me” without even trying to apply, “i’m too old to go to school,” or “i’m not smart enough.” Either their negative mind had clouded their judgement or made the decision for them or they’re just too lazy iono. If you don’t care about your personal growth then no1 can help you in that regard because only YOU can do it, it’s personal for a reason. I joked about it all the time to my my wife “huney, can you go pee FOR me?” she was like “what? that’s impossible! Your bladder is full, not mine”😂 Then, the next time chocolate came around, she didn’t save me any, she was like “ughh...I ate it FOR you??” .....🤦♂️😆😂 (don’t mess with women) 🤦♂️
I got panic when I saw the clock kept running and he only got 3 mins left while he was not finishing. Seriously, I got super anxious and worried. And his strong mind really says something about the stability of oneself, being mindful and calm even when others are pushing us
If you came to the comments looking to get an idea of what this talk was about, don’t be like the man asking other travelers about what they observed at the top of the mountain. Watch the video and gain your own clarity.
roy brooks actually, no. Because: he is talking about how these hindrances affect your own personal journey. This is different from everybody else and you must adapt to them. Summarizing the video filters out the main points, but there may be some details left, which might be important.

It's amusing how closely aligned modern psychology has aligned with buddhist teachings. It's as though as a profession they looked to their teachings and realised: These guys have already got us beat. They've wrapped all concepts covered in these talks in western language - Cognitive behaviour therapy.
Yes! At first I talked back to him in my mind, “I feel it. How dare you tell me I am not my feeling?” Then I realized what he meant. My emotions, my thoughts and my worries are just the state of minds or actions and they are not ME. We suffer because we identify ourselves with our state of feelings or doings.
Same here, if an 18 minute video can change your perspective and restore faith in yourself wholly - then imagine what years of buddhist training can accomplish. I deeply admire the wisdom these people carry within themselves, but also the discipline.
Theres this amazing essence to him. He's so sure himself. He knows himself. Its seen in every movement he makes. Knowledge of the self is truly a very powerful thing
I have been avoiding this video for years, thinking “I don’t want to be lectured or taught something in such a disciplined and cold manner, as the monks go very deep into and make me uncomfortable” but everything this man uttered had a place of good intention and understanding just how difficult this self journey can be if we do not have the right track to go. I stumbled into this video on autoplay while dozing off and I was amazed at how focused this speech was, and how some thing as simple as mountain climbing stories let us know what is happening within our self destructive behaviours. From what I heard, now there is a root for me to make more conscious choices and not identify too strongly with what I experience day-to-day. The first step was admitting it and now I hope to begin my walk on you all and see things clearly.

@Oh Dae-Su Any form of sensory experience can be used as meditation. Meditation references a particular state of Being. That state is dependent on a conscious choice by the Self in how it views and experiences the present moment, regardless of whatever's happening or being perceived in that particular moment. This TED Talk is just as much a valid form of meditation as spending an hour or two sitting in one spot and repeatedly bringing your awareness back to your breath. You're approaching this like meditation is a specific computer program, when really it's seeing how all binary code is still just a bunch of 0's and 1's regardless of how the code expresses itself.

Traveller asks the experience of reaching the top of mountain and decides not to go 5. Each person must find his own, it's impossible to share how 6. Clarity and better decisions - decide by self and it's personal challenges. 7. The 5 hinderences 1. Sensual desire - positive emotions (seeing, smelling, tasting, feeling, hearning) 2. Ill will and aversion - negative state of mind 3. Dullness Recognise accept investigate non identification( depression) 4. Restlessness - thinking about past and fearing about future. Monkey mind 5. Sceptical doubt - indecisiveness And getting disconnected from goals 8. I have to align the life in such a way to prevent the hinderences . Each of these hinderences are dark cloud in the path. Just let it rain Recognise accept - to be the way how they are Investigate - why it came, what is consequences of me staying there Non-identification - I'm not the body, I'm not mind We are unique and must not copy from someone else. To bring meaning and value in life I must choose not the hinderences to stop me . There are two mistakes in life : not starting and not reaching where I have to reach Edit: I have learned a lot after this video. Its just 3 weeks and I'm excited for life ahead of learning

5 Hindrances
1. Sensual desire (pleasures & distractions)
2. ill will (negative mind)
3. Slothful body & mind (lack of energy, lack of motivation)
4. Restlessness (worry about the future or regret about the past, unable to stay in the present)
5. Skeptical doubt (indecisiveness)
Each of these hindrances is placing a dark cloud on your mind.
Solution: Align and structure your life to prevent these hindrances from arising.
4 Steps to remove these Hindrances
1. Recognize (what state of mind you’re in)
2. Accept (accept and allow situations and people to be the way it is/they are)
3. Investigate (your emotional & mental state) - “why did it come up?” “what is the consequence if I remain in that state?”
4. Non identification (practice “I’m not the body, I’m not mind, I’m not my emotion, I can just see all these 3 aspects about me”)

The master mentioned 2 types of travelers, what he didn’t mention is a 3rd traveler, that’s you 😂😆
Let me put it this way- You have people that work hard to get to where they are at in life to achieve their own goal and overcame the 5 hindrances. Then you also have people that depends on others to achieve that goal. You also have people that think the goal is impossible and doesn’t quite get it and chooses not to have any goal at all.
The master’s story is one of many symbolisms. You can apply it to any scenario and the rules still apply. Let me give another one,
I have friends that are MD from med school because thy studied hard and didn’t need anyone’s help and wasn’t born with a silver spoon, i also have friends that were sociable and had help in finishing their education via study groups/family/friends support, and then I also have friends that goes “college is not for me” without even trying to apply, “i’m too old to go to school,” or “i’m not smart enough.” Either their negative mind had clouded their judgement or made the decision for them or they’re just too lazy iono.
But seeing him being so calm makes me realize that my anxiety is what I need to deal with. And his strong mind really says something about the stability of oneself, being mindful and calm even when others are pushing us

It's important to work on both. We need balance everywhere in our lives.
Building the body and mind often go hand in hand. The world is chaotic because everyone's trying to fit in the restaurant.
The most important part is practicing. "I am not the body. I am not the mind. I am not my emotion. It's just that I can see all this three aspect about me"

One of the best ted talk. The talk itself is a meditation.
oh get over yourself
True... He is a master of his mind....
I agree with you Half-Blind.
I disagree with you Oh Dae-Su.

"All of our lives are too unique to copy the path from someone else."
;(
Does he say 'past' or 'path'?
He said path
Can u explain it what did u get from this line ?plz
i find myself listening to other peoples journeys , the trouble they encountered the sights they have seen , it has set me on the right path , however it has also made me confident that i do not need to journey since i alerady have seen it , today this talk made me realize i stopped halfway
My takeaway from the video
1. Studies may not bring happiness and knowledge of self.
2. Ancient practices are meant to find self
3. Sharing with others, training to find the ways that I like to do
4. Traveller asks the experience of reaching the top of mountain and decides not to go
5. Each person must find his own, it's impossible to share how
6. Clarity and better decisions - decide by self and it's personal challenges.
7. The 5 hinderences
1. Sensual desire - positive emotions (seeing, smelling, tasting, feeling, hearning)
2. Ill will and aversion - negative state of mind
3. Dullness Recognise accept investigate non identification( depression)
4. Restlessness - thinking about past and fearing about future. Monkey mind
5. Sceptical doubt - indecisiveness
And getting disconnected from goals
8. I have to align the life in such a way to prevent the hinderences . Each of these hinderences are dark cloud in the path. Just let it rain
Recognise
accept - to be the way how they are
Investigate - why it came, what is consequences of me staying there
Non-identification - I'm not the body, I'm not mind
We are unique and must not copy from someone else. To bring meaning and value in life I must choose not the hinderences to stop me .
There are two mistakes in life : not starting and not reaching where I have to reach
Edit: I have learned a lot after this video. Its just 3 weeks and I'm excited for life ahead of learning

This man has no desires. He’s totally free from all things we cling onto that keeps our fragile egos from dismantling. thinking if we let it go, then our life itself ends. The man in the story had a desire to climb the mountain which led to desiring to know what the mountain looked liked at the top, before he even attempted it himself. Therefore removing the desire to even do it.
If it’s something he wanted to do. The first thing he should of done, is let it go and just focus on the things he needed to do as person to be able to even make the climb in the first place. Also he shouldn’t forget to just live life and enjoy it. When the opportunity comes he would of been ready for it and have the choice in doing it or not. Cause if you desire something. He is not free from this, he has simply lived a life of practicing knowing the truth of this, therefore he sees "the enemy" even with eyes closed. He is indeed someone who can help others find that they are not invincible, nor are they a waste of space. The past is as real as the enemy we choose or choose not to see.
