Thank you SO much Steve. Got myself a 550 Logan today, set it up and cut my first mat! Thanks for the confidence!
I have had a Logan Mat Cutter for years. Love it!
Thanks Steve, just found this after asking you a couple of weeks ago how to frame work....thank you, I am so happy following your invaluable advice. Great cutter
I just purchased the smaller size. I can hardly wait to give it a try! Thank you for the tutorial!
I have a very similar model that was a gift also. I've been very happy with it and like that it can easily be stored out of the way.
That is the model I got for Christmas for myself. I also ordered The 704-1 Elite Glass cutter that works with the mat cutter. Looking forward to a productive winter, framing. Thanks for the demo.
Welcome to 2017 Steve. Thanks for demonstrating this new "toy" of yours. You make it look SO easy. Work can look quite impressive if mounted properly and bevelled edges just add an extra "professional" dimension. Glad that you are happy with the Elite 450-1. I will take a look at the site and see what else they have on offer in a "budget" price range....Thanks.
Fantastic! And thanks for the demo!
Sweet. My sister started her first frame shop with one like you're old one. Ah memories. I think my New Year is going to be a blast because of you.
That old cutter did quite a lot of pretty great mat cutting.
Great demonstration! Thank you.
you are right its a bit counter intuitive and needs some practice but its so much fun once you get the hang of it great video thank you
Great instruction. Just the way to learn before wasting materials. Thanks
I also got a Logan mat cutter for Christmas a few years ago. It is a simpler model but I love it! The first week I had it, nothing in my house was safe! I bought a bag of mat "scraps" at a local art supply store for a few $, and every framed photo we had got matted! Since then I have saved countless $$ by buying and making my own mats, and using frames from thrift stores! As my youngest daughter once told me, "You're not "cheap", you're "thrifty"!" ;-)
I know right? They make it so easy and precise you just want to cut as many mats as possible.
Super demo, Thanks...
Looks cool!
Really nice mat cutter, thanks for the demo. God bless
Love your videos!! I always learn something new from you and you're pretty funny too!
I just got this for my Christmas gift!!
Never to many.I have got to get this mat cutter
Nice. That was educational for me 👍🏽
That is an awesome mat cutter!! Upgrading your tools is exciting and necessary. :D
Of course there is never "too much" when it comes to art supplies! XD
Thanks steve
They have this really awesome one at my school that has a really heavy and sharp edged steel wheel that pushes the paper off this ledge and cuts it as it goes. It's got measurements and little sliding bars that control the mat or paper. Only thing is you gotta change the wheel if you wanna cut something thicker like Mat board or cardboard. But the normal one works for everything up to the thisckest of watercolor papers. It's massive too. 5 feet long. I love it though. Always use it to cut my things.
I say that because exacto blade cutters always pull like you said and you risk having a wonky edge. They have one of these too, it works well. But it leaves marks on black mat board because you have to push down on it so hard. It's super safe though and you have excellent leverage and clean cuts if you have a nice sharp razor in it.
I just picked on of these guys up to cut watercolor sheets at my local hobby lobby on clearance. So if anyone is looking for a GREAT deal check out your hobby lobby
Good Video. Thanks.
Love my Logan Artist Elite. Perfect mats every single time. Forgot the slip sheet one time. which resulted in me having to finish one inside corner cut by hand. But that was just operator error :p
Yes, I'm excited to put it into full production mode.
Another great video Steve! . I love the new Logan features like the rubber strip on the underside of the straight edge bar and the pull cutters (did you like this feature?). Also, that they now have the retractable blades so you don't have to worry about safety or marring a work surface when stating the cutters down. I think I see a new mat cutter in my future! Have a great day and thanks for sharing.
Yes, I love the pull cutting a lot. All the features were well thought out and effective.
Watching this in 2020 - $380++ in Canadian for this now! But still a good one to get I think
Good video. I keep entertaining the idea of buying a good mat cutter
This one has so far worked out pretty well.
The Mind of Watercolor I bought one on sale we will see what happens. I had the stand alone cutter and the results were not good
This was a helpful video. Can you show how to cut multiple openings?
Nice video! FYI - the crawl button is not used to keep the mat still, but rather to keep the cutter from creeping up the mat when you are pushing in the blade to start each cut.
Aah ok, thanks for the input. I knew when to use the pin and thats about it.
I couldn't help but notice a very familiar logo and had to say something. ROLL RIDE!!! (I suspect you would really like my church, as the pastor and most of the congregation are avid fans.) If you ever have a class near there, I'd definitely like to go. And once again, thank you for sharing a wealth of information. Congrats on your Christmas present!
Awesome! Roll Tide right back at ya!
I've had the Logan Simplex 750 for a couple of years and it's an elegant machine, a pleasure to use. But my word, the space it takes up, and the price of course! The 750 has to be kept set up at all times. Looks like you can do everything the 750 can do more conveniently and at half the price. Wise decision on your part! Wish I had been as smart, but I guess I got caught up in the sales hype lol Long way from university art class days when you had to cut your mats with only an exacto knife held at a 45 degree angle with your hand in a cramp as you drew the knife back toward you, knowing that if you made even a slight miss-lick you would have to cut it over. Ever have to do that?
Yes, I had to learn the "primitive" method as well. Hated it! Its why I bought the old EZ Mat system years ago. It at least held the blade at a constant angle. The 450 is a joy so far, and an easy enough size to store away while still giving you the ability to cut down a full sheet. Still I barely have room for it.
I love, love, LOVE your videos! Thank you so much. After watching several I purchased some M. Grahams watercolor paints and set up a palette on a porcelain plate like in your video, my question is this... when dipping in more than one color since these paints stay on the moist side how do I not contaminate my pure paint and if I do, how do I clean it out of the pure paint without wasting a lot of paint? And if you could tell me how to get lose hairs out of my brushes without ruining the brush or MY PAINTINGS, that would be GREAT. I bought Mimic Kolinsky sables and Mimic squirrel brushes.
Just a few swipes off the top of the paint glob with a clean wet brush usually cleans it up enough to grab some pure color. Don't mix on top of the paint globs pull paint away and mix in the mixing area to keep contamination to a minimum. Loose hairs, if its a quality brush, will usually just come out on their own. Mostly just when a brush is new. Don't try to pull out loose hair unless you see a loose one coming out already.
Great video Steve! 😆 Happy 2017. I have the next level down logan 440 I think it is (I have to look). Mine is about 10 years old. Still works great. Unfortunately in the move the slip board and production stop were lost. I contacted the company to find out how I could replace them, but they never got back to me. I'm a bit bummed about that. It's definitely nice to custom make your own mats. Have fun! 😉
Thanks! Too bad they wouldn't respond. Thankfully the productions stops aren't essential to cutting a good mat. Just makes it easier to cut a whole batch of mats to the same size. Slip sheets can just be recut from scrap mat board.
The Mind of Watercolor Thanks Steve...I will definitely do that! 😆
does it work with 1,7 mm mat ?
Hi, thank you for posting and excellent detailed review. I have a question. Let me see, how do I word this and make sense... I'm new to framing. I'm looking to find if this cutter will cut a small window with a wide outer size. Example 5x7" window, with 16x20" outer size (to fit a 16x20" frame).
Yes you can!
@@mindofwatercolor awesome! Thank you for such a quick response! I'm so excited! Also you mentioning this may cutter being a pull cutter rather than a push cutter really helped me decide which one to plan for.
Some people are complaining that the rubber strip that holds it down is actually staining on some light colored mat boards. It's like the black of the rubber is coming off. Have you noticed any of that?
Not so far.
ROLL TIDE!!!!! 🐘🏈🌊
+terathered yeah man!!!
Hi Steve! I know this is an old video but I was recently thinking of getting one and wondering how your Logan cutter was holding up and if you're still liking it??
So far so good. Doesn't get a ton of use but does all that I expect out of it.
lol ...love your 2017 Christmas gift ...but for those of us that have no room for something this large or $$$ would you advise your first old timer mat cutter and/or a video of how to use the older smaller type !!! ??? thanks
I used the old one for years successfully. Very simple but did the job just fine.
The Mind of Watercolor thanks .. I actually found a Logan diy kit on Amazon.. looks pretty fabulous.. thank you for introducing me to Logan 👏 appreciate
Killing me w the Bama tee..

Roll Tide Roll!!
👌👍
You remind me slightly of the actor Robert DeNiro. ☺️❤️☺️
I was just thinking of this!
😂😂😂😃💚🍀
I can't afford all this fancy stuff. I use a metre stick, a wood slab and a box cutter ._.)
first!
For any Australia's out there, this costs $518.00 AUD on eBay........expensive !! The 350-1 is $321.95 AUD interesting.
Yikes!
