    In this video I show how to cut mat board for some custom picture frames I've been working on. This isn't really woodworking, but it is related as it has to do with putting the finishing touches on a woodworking project. I don't have experience with lots of brands, but you can find mat board cutters like the one I've used here at craft stores or online. I would consider myself a "beginner" in the world of mat board cutting. This video really goes over the most basic kind of cut. I've done fancier boards in the past, but honestly, I like the simple mats best. After all...the mat board isn't the star of the show...the artwork or picture is.
    Most of the prints shown in this video were made by Jesse LeDoux - ledouxville.com/

    Nice video! Classy as always. One thing to think about is making the border slightly bigger to overlap image, 2mm each side is the standard. Also the main reason to use a mat (other than aesthetics) is to keep the print away from the glass.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      Good tip. I do typically do that (the wider borders.) Oddly, I had never thought about your second point (keeping the print off of the glass) but that makes so much sense. It's one of those "duh" moments.

  • @countrysideworkshop

    I have always wanted to know how to cut mat! Thanks for sharing.
    Quick question: you said take the length of the photo minus the link of the frame opening and divide by 2 to get the mat opening. But it seems that there would be no overlay of the mat over the picture so taping the picture to the mat wouldn't be possible (like you did in the picture frame video). Am I missing something?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      No...you're right. What I should have said was (or what I meant was) the length of the area you want revealed. When I print photos I usually leave them with a border so that I can tape. I also usually make the opening of the mat smaller than the printed area of the photo b/c I'd rather cover the edges of the image than risk there being a small sliver of white revealed from behind the mat.

    • @countrysideworkshop
      @countrysideworkshop 7 лет назад

      Chris Salomone how do you get them printed with a border?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      For smaller pictures (anything less than 12x18") I batch the images to fit onto a 12x18 sheet and tell the printer not to cut. Then I cut them on my own. If you were printing at a place where you can't really specify weird stuff like that (Say from Costco) you could add a border in Photoshop (etc...) and that would be part of the print, which you could just cover

    So, I wanted to point out that Chris you've got a real talent for story telling man, great job. But you should definitely reach out to a tool brand for a partnership. From what I understand brands like Makita, Festool, Triton and Ridgid are typically open to working with youtubers.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      Hi Sean. Thank you! That is something I've been thinking about lately...and something I'd like to become more proactive about in the near future. I've seen Triton do a lot lately, and I think Rigid. Haven't seen much from Makita or Festool. I would suspect all will get into the game at some point. Then all of us youtube woodworkers will have to form teams and become enemies :)

    • @seansaulnier560
      @seansaulnier560 7 лет назад

      Chris Salomone Festool was at one point partnered with The Wood Whisperer. Makita with The Samurai Carpenter. Ridgid with McClarty's Woodworks, and Triton with April Wilkerson and a few others.
      I haven't yet decided if I'm going to do a RUclips channel, but I will definitely put Team Foureyes on my frienemies list. :)

    Chris, great video. Something I've been thinking about trying for a while. Could you use a mat cutter this size for a larger panorama (I have a 50"x10" that I've been trying to find an economical way to frame) by re-centering it or would the alignment be a problem?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      I think I see what you're saying. So obviously you couldn't do it in 1 piece b/c it's just too big to fit in the cutter (though I'm sure there are larger ones (probably expensive though)) But you could make 2 U-Shaped 25x10 pieces. You'd just have that seam to deal with.

    "One of the cheapest...ways to make a room more interesting," lol, great tutorial, but framing easily costs as much as furniture. You'll also want to come in at least 1/32 on every side to make sure your artwork can't fit through the opening, and so its pinned down on all 4 sides once the image is fully sandwiched between your mat and backing. You should also get some acid free foam core from the same place you get your matting since acid in card board and other cheap backing materials can yellow your artwork, but i assume thats in another video since its not strictly related to cutting your mat.

      Not exactly. You would need to hold the exacto at a bevel while you cut. You'd just end up with a square cut out of it, but it wouldn't be beveled which has a nicer look. Although probably too subtle to really see on the video.
