    So,we will get french battleships in february 2019, one patch after the british navy got the first tech tree...
    Just after we got the russian battleships, CVs, second cruiser line, minelayers fishing trawlers and rubber duckies.

    To be fair to the French , they were limited by the Washington agreement about how many tons of war ships they could build. They therefore tried to build battleships like the Dunkerque which had heavy firepower but light tonnage and therefore reduced armor. This was more than enough to deal with German battle cruisers, but when Germany broke the agreement and started building more powerful ships it was seriously under armored.

    I get the impression those secondaries are more meant to defend the ship against small ships flanking it, something that does not happen in the game.

    The thing to remember about ships is that they are designed to fulfil a role in a fleet. As they are modelled fairly realistically in game, to play them well you should see what that nation intended with the design in the first place, over what classification they are given in that game, similar to the two destroyer schools of thought: stealth-torper vs mid-range gunboat.
    Not every ship brought into the game will fight the same way. Dunkerque is not a Warspite short-range brawler nor a Fuso long-range sniper.
    Dunkerque is a battle*cruiser*. She was designed to hunt and destroy enemy cruisers, NOT to go toe-to-toe with enemy battleships. So, she has cruiser speed, armour to protect her from those cruisers, and since she was expected to be chasing cruisers running for their lives from her 13"ers, all her main guns are forward.
    Granted, it's not always possible to have that scenario in-game. but playing her with this in mind will let you gain greater success with her.
    I like the Dunkerque. She's not shit. She's a different design that is supposed to be played differently to enable more variety in the game. If all you want is "another cool BB" then stay away. This ship is for specialists.

    • @blahblah7720
      @blahblah7720 7 лет назад

      " As they are modelled fairly realistically in game"wow stop,the armor is not even right,no no no it's not realistic in any way.

    • @Biggles266
      @Biggles266 7 лет назад +7

      I am *not* talking about *simulator* realism. Obviously, the game has to be balanced to make it fun. For all the game mechanics on AP normalisation, penetration over distance, etc., this is still an arcade game.
      By "fairly realistically" I merely meant that she was moddelled as a battlecruiser and not a battleship. Dunkerque is NOT a battleship, despite her being in that tech line in WoWS.
      I see you make no comment on the actual point of my comment though, merely finding something you can nitpick and display your outrage at something not being made the way you want it made.

      The secondaries on the Richelieu is even worse than the Dunkerque. More powerful, yes, but there is fewer of them and all is at the back, pointing towards the stern.

    • @Nyctasia
      @Nyctasia 8 лет назад +3

      Jean Bart would be the better bet of the two Richelieu's, though Clemenceau and Gasgoigne would be interesting as half-sister variations on the design. Alsace would be a great Bismarck killer though.

  • @ramjb
    @ramjb 8 лет назад +7

    The Dunkerques were pretty fine ship for their displacement. They were actually designed as BCs (so you're not far off that assessment, Jingles), but were re-labelled as "light battleships" in not a very different "political" decision to ,on-paper, make the french navy more powerful than what it was, than the Japanese move with the Kongos, which also were BCs and which also didn't deserve the Battleship label, not at least if we consider their actual armor protection.
    To be fair with the ship, however, they were intended to hunt Deutchlands and that they were able to do perfectly. And even with their light armor they didn't compare badly with Italian battleships other than the Littorios, which also were very lightly protected. Within their historical timeframe, they were very efficient designs for their displacement, and they were pretty well prepared to meet most of the likely opposition they would find.
    Strassbourg was Dunkerque's half-sister. I'm sure will be the "official line" tier 6 battleship for the french. As fast as the dunkerque, but significantly uparmoured (still far underpar though), shoud be an overall quite better ship (which honestly is a first, as it seems that all the premium "sisters" of historical ships are better than their "regular" counterparts, when it should be all the other way around, money should not give you access to a better ship than the one you can get by playing in a FTP game. But, well. Wargaming. And stuff).

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb 8 лет назад +5

      Oh and BTW, 28 seconds main gun reload is extremely generous for the ship. Even being 330mm shells. French reload mechanisms weren't good, and specially underpar training and crew practice meant that even in training sometimes it would be minutes before a main gun was able to fire again (at least that happened to Richelieu in a practice, and the fleet standards weren't much better and the Dunkerques also suffered from quite serious rate of fire issues). Of course later on mechanisms and training improved but even then they never were very efficient designs in that sense.

    Jingles,
    Why are ships "commissioned into service" a year (or more like this one) after they're launched? Since this is a comment im noticing with a lot of the ship reviews you do. As a man from Her Majesties Navy im presuming you'd know why they have to be commissioned into the navy (as who else are they going to be used by after being built and launched)

    • @The_MightyJingles
      @The_MightyJingles  8 лет назад +207

      Good question. Navies like to make sure a ship mostly works as advertised before accepting them. After launching the ship needs to be fully crewed up, final equipment fits need to be installed and tested and the entire ship has to be put through extensive trials before being accepted for commission into the Navy.

    • @AAA9734
      @AAA9734 8 лет назад +3

      I hope that Jingles, as a navy man, will answer this himself. But if he does not, the reason is that ships are incredibly complex machines. Every system needs to be checked, every problem need to be fixed, and most of all, the crew needs to be trained and get experience, and learn how to run the ship. Also, any equipment that was not already installed at launch needs to be installed, tuned, and made ready for use. This is a process that is very time consuming, and this is the reason that there may be years between the first launch of a ship, and it's commisioning into service in the fleet.

    • @oldfrend
      @oldfrend 8 лет назад +9

      yeah launching doesn't mean the ship's finished, just that it'll float.

    @TheMightyJingles; I watched this vid when it came out, and was excited right away. Despite the review, I bought it; I think it was the first premium I purchased, aside from the buy-in for the closed beta. I came back to watch this again this evening, and had to post. At this point, I'm in the top 30 for number of plays on the NA server (between 800-900 matches at this point.) I'm approaching a 60% win rate it in. The reload buff just made it better. I honestly have to say, as a long time watcher, I respectfully suggest you underestimated the value of this ship when you first reviewed it. Love everything you do, please keep it up! Yours most sincerely...

    • @snowthemegaabsol6819
      @snowthemegaabsol6819 8 лет назад +1

      The problem is RNG dependence over aiming skill. Unless that changes, there is no possible way to balance them

    • @Marth667
      @Marth667 8 лет назад +1

      Ivan Buncic Id actually argue that its pretty balance right now, but yes I do agree that its stupid in some ways but again its an arcade game. Expect as much when playing the game. Dispersion on guns as the shell exits the gun and literally does a 20 degree turn and flies off as RNG determines. 'Magical' detonations that happen with out citadels being penned and are often caused by HE shells hitting you're funnels and BANG you die because wargaming. Fires are soooo fucking common, its like the decks are scrubbed with kerosene rather then water the list goes on

    • @Marth667
      @Marth667 8 лет назад +1

      Personally we all know what could fix battleships hell most ships would be angle firing rather then mouse firing. Having to guestimate the range and then fire.. see where the shells land and then calculate the difference before they get zero'd in on the target would be ideal. Thats why I have hope for War Thunders - Knights of the sea expansion. For now there will be no battleships in game but ill take a more realistic naval war game over arcade games most of the time

  • @Wrzerq
    @Wrzerq 8 лет назад +11

    Awesome, this ship is the fine example of French war designs. Just like with French tanks, the bow plays the role of stern and the stern plays the role of bow. Dunkerque was designed to start the battle backward and cautiously advance towards the enemy, firing those little guns. As soon as the enemy is spotted, those mighty engines are reversed and the enemy is left on the battlefield totally confused and demoralised, seeing how French just totally ignored them and fled. I was wondering why are those powerful cannons facing the direction of retreat, but then it hit me. If this ship would be surrounded, the priority will be to shoot and destroy ships that are bloking the escape line! Genius!

    • @HerrRoehrich
      @HerrRoehrich 8 лет назад +2

      Fuso also has bigger guns, more of them, better accuracy, better armour, and more HP, meaning that it can comfortably risk being spotted at the enemies' max range. Dunkerque? Not so much.

    • @GintaPPE1000
      @GintaPPE1000 8 лет назад

      +HerrRoehrich. Dispersion isn't everything though. She's got a quad turret while the others have either twins or triples. Dunkerque's dispersion-per-barrel is the lowest of all 4 T6 battleships. And unlike the New Mexico and Fuso her sigma is also reportedly very good.

    • @HerrRoehrich
      @HerrRoehrich 8 лет назад

      GintaPPE1000
      Her turrets are both a blessing and a curse. Sure, being able to bring all guns to bear to the front is nice, but losing one turret halves her firepower, whereas losing a turret costs the others only 1/4 or 1/6 of their respective punches. The few pros she has (frontal field of fire, accuracy, speed) just can't make up for all the major cons (lack of armor, size, crappy secondaries/AA, sluggishness, non-existent firepower to the rear, small caliber), imho.

Could have left them in a neutral port, instead of joining the British to fight the people that invaded their country, chose to be ignorant and stuck up and paid for their stupidity.

    Nelson class have similar design however a lot bigger guns (406mm) and one more of them, a lot more armor (up to 356mm) and a lot heavier AA defence 6x8 and 4x4 40mm AA. Secondary guns are 6 x 120 + 8 x 150 mm. So all in all it looks a lot like Dunkerque, only made properly. I would really like to see Nelson in game.

    Well the armour belt was sloped 21 degrees something not modeled and was 240mm over vitals and tapering to 140mm at the ends. AA was good for the time it was in commission and was never upgraded as all active ships were. This is a nerfed cartoon of the original and as expected from WG.The only other thing is STOP using millimetres for gun size they mean nothing. There 13" guns. Warspite had 15" guns as did Bismark, Hood and Bayern. Fuso 14" guns. Please use imperial measurements even today the RN define there main guns as 4/5 for 4.5".

  • @Tank50us
    @Tank50us 8 лет назад +1

    I actually just bought myself a Dunkerque, and I've gotten a few matches in it. While Jingles is right about the ship, I should point out that it does make a good 'prep ship' if you're preparing to go into the American Fast Battleships (North Carolina and Iowa), minus the third turret, and better Secondaries, the ships do seem to play similarly in the regard of "Keep your front towards the enemy at all times. Ergo, if you can somehow make the Dunkerque work for you, then you shouldn't have issues in the North Carolina or Iowa.
    All of that said however, It does serve the purpose of getting a French Captain ready for when the French Navy does eventually come into the game. And it does seem to do well at raking in credits and Exp (ofc, it is a premium ship after all). What is funny however, is that these ships aren't that common, so odds are, if you play it right, you will most likely be going up against players that don't know how to adequately attack this ship. Not a guarantee of course, but it is something you can help you make the ship work for you.

She suffers against anything with larger than 12in main guns, thus in WOWs she really is outclassed against BBs, needs to be driven like a super cruiser against cruisers..but no matter what you do it will be a struggle however, she just was not designed to go toe to toe against Nagato or Bismarck etc.

    personally I love my dunkurque, I almost always get 2 kills per game in it and survive most of my wins in it. the reason people hate it so much is because they don't play it right. for the first half the match you use it's amazing gun velocity to snipe from long range, than as soon as you see an oppertu it presenting itself you rush full speed at a weak point in the enemy fleet and lead a push through, a full speed dunkurque backed up by destroyers and cruisers in a hard thing to stop, and if used right you can solo push an entire map side

  • @spaceempire

    I have something to say about the turning radius, normally when things go fast they need bigger turning circles due to physics(centrifugal force)
    The NC has a big turning radius on paper, but when in actual battle I'm still able to turn quite tightly if slow the ship down.
    And if physics actually applies to the game, then one may find that slow top speed ships tend to have small turning radius, which I think is actually the case.
    That's my opinion, what do you captains think?

    • @spaceempire
      @spaceempire 8 лет назад +1

      So in order to make a fair comparison, shouldn't the radius be measured when all ships are turning at equal speed?(Assuming the stats given in dock were measured when sailing at top speed)

    Actually before the new Update dropped, i was running the AA/Secondary build on commander, and my main gun upgrades, and those secondaries have saved me COUNTLESS times from enemy DDs and hunting cruisers is my favorite pastime in this ship, right alongside setting everything on fire when an enemy gets too close (his mistake). And my AA could actually contend with enemy t5-6 planes, while the EDGE on the bow told enemy AP rounds to piss off.

    • @quoniam426
      @quoniam426 7 лет назад

      Providing you maneuver at the right time in the right situation, secondaries are among the best at tier 6, they blow destroyers out of the water in seconds with twelve packed 130 mm guns. AA is just enough when completely speced to repell lower tier CVs attacks and bow armor can bounce up to 356 mm AP shells. Xhen facing higher caliber, the armor is just enough, if angled to not being citadelled by 380 mm shells even if they overmatch the bow. Distance can help you too, against German BBs specially who tend to be terribley inaccurate at range. Unfortunately, against 406 mm and higher you're gonna get loled penned from pretty much every angle in this ship, my biggest fear isn't Warspite or even Bismarck, but Nagato, Colorado, North Carolina and Amagi.
      The exception is Scharnhorst with only 283 mm shells you're pretyy much immune to her AP shells providing you don't give broadside, ahtought superstructures are gonna eat some big shots.
      So provided you use the ship as it can be used you can do fairly well in it.

  • @heavymandarin1262
    @heavymandarin1262 8 лет назад

    @Jingles: you know what makes 0 sense to me? you said the 4 guns on one turret greatly affects the accuracy of the cannon right next to it. that makes perfect sense, but only if one gun fires after another. if all 4 guns fire simultaneously, then they should all land in the same general spot. but instead, as far as I can tell, the guns act as if though they were fired off in sequence regardless if you fire a salvo or not. which doesn't seem accurate. it could be a balancing factor, I don't actually play WOWS. but this is the observation I've made, and I feel like it could use some revising. less accuracy when guns are fired in sequence, more accuracy when firing a salvo.

  • @paraklash8912
    @paraklash8912 8 лет назад

    What I have noticed about this ship, is that has very high shell velocity and as we all know from Wot and real world shit, higher velocity tends to mean higher penetration, so in my opinion this will do better in higher tier battles. Now that's sounds insane from what jingles is saying about it, but if you think about it is makes sense because most ships in the higher tiers will have much greater armor. Perfect example of what I mean is how he was getting better results when he was shooting the angled side of the Cleveland whatever the effectiveness of that armor was at that angle, because when he shot the Cleveland from the direct side he got a citadel and a bunch of over pens. So thus making this ships armor piercing capabilities of this very very good at shooting at thick sided warships rather than thinly armored ones.

    Dunkerque's turrets were actually subdivided in the middle, with each side of the turret controlling two of the 13" guns. Thus, if one side of the turret was knocked out, the other could keep firing, and this did in fact happen. Is that reflected in the game?

  • @GeistHeller
    @GeistHeller 8 лет назад

    Thank you for presenting her story in such a non-biased way Jingles. Most people always think that accepting the British ultimatum was the "obvious" option, but back in 1940, most people in France (and Europe) expected the UK to go down or at least be forced to a white peace. The US were after all still firmly neutral and nobody took the Russian seriously after the disaster of the Russo-Japanese war and Purges.
    Without the gift of hindsight, refusal was the most logical choice since breaking the armistice would have had dire consequences for the country.
    The French also did not expect the Royal Navy to actually open fire on them, people have to remember that after the establishment of the Entente Cordiale, it was common practice for French and British navy officers to perform joint exercises, which means that most of the navy brass knew eachother. Churchill's decision caused quite an uproar amongst the British admiralty, especially since their French counterpart would ultimately stay true to their word.
    It always irks me to see people throwing a fuss about the French fleet scuttling and yet completely ignore or glorify the scuttling of the german imperial fleet at the end of WW1. The double standards are real.

    I'm drawn to unique BBs in WoWS and so I bought this ship today. Its a fun ship and I only recommend it for experienced BB captains. I've seen many other Dunker captains expose their full hull today, they didn't last :)

    Hey Jingles, I found this game nobody knows about called "From the Depths"... Terrible name, great game. The best way to describe it might be World of Warships meets space engineers.
    You can build massive battleships, cruisers, or even submarines, airships and spaceships then have them duke it out. Might be worth taking a look at, I have really enjoyed it and I think you might too.

    Jingles, two questions. 1 What did the designers sniff when the developed that vessel. 2 Did they also designed the Nelson class of BB?

    Hey Jingles...
    Since WOW is adding the Dunkerque, do think any of these could be added to help flesh out the Frog's.. er French tech tree?

    sounds like this will be great for chasing cruisers and blasting away. And its a narrow target from the front!

    The attack on Mers el Kiber. Likely one of the greatest military blunders of the war. It insured that many French Military men and Civilians would stay loyal to Petain, and for many French the wounds of what happened have not completely healed from what I've read. Despite how much the British say it was necessary, records from the French and even Germans make it obvious that one the Germans didn't want the Ships, and the French had no plans on letting them have the ships even if they tried. Captains had orders to leave ports, and if they couldn't they were to scuttle their ships if the Germans tried to take them by force.

    I know he doesn't do World of Warships, but it would be hysterically funny to hear Squire review this thing.

    I saw some detailed stats of her and her Sigma value (related to gun accuracy;higher the better) is 1.7, unlike other t6 BB's 1.8. And it feels more like shotgun due to Quadruple turrets

    any ideas as to when or if WOW will introduce the Vittorio Veneto? Maybe they could make the Deutschland class "Pocket" battleship or, for that matter, give birth to the german carrier, Graf Zepplin. Obviously, they have a great deal of material to work with, but those are some of the ships I'd like to see in the game.

    Thanks for the review Jingles! I'm considering this ship but it depends on price. I've been waiting for French warships to arrive but I'm not sure.

    On another note, I think you shouldn't fire AP shells at cruisers with the Dunkerque unless they give your their broadside.
    That being said... what is the fire chance of the 330mm HE shell? Is the muzzle velocity the same or lower than the AP shells? If it's lower, it might be that HE salvos from the main guns have less dispersion problems than AP salvos.
    Has anyone noticed anything regarding this while driving the Dunkerque?
    Also, wait a minute, 29 knots?! The Dunkerque made 31 knots in real life!
