World of Warships - The Scharnhorst

- I can finally show you one of the German battleships I've been enjoying the opportunity to playtest for the last week, the Scharnhorst. Well, "enjoying" may not be exactly the right word to use, the Scharnhorst isn't a bad ship by any stretch of the imagination, but it's tricky to do well in...

Jingles, why do you no longer do these ship reviews? I love the history lesson you give at the start. Well done!
It's hard to review ships that wargaming made up especially if untouchable CV class is there to ruin the fun for everyone.
That auxiliary cruiser should have just angled its armor. xD
Nah, man. Even with just 283mm guns, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau would’ve just overmatched it and punched clean through anyways.
It did.
What it should have done was to have a “flared” upper belt armor and a deck that partially stuck out.
Not to mention better torpedo defense.
@@willrogers3793 r/ HYPER woosh
Or go broadside so all the shells will overpen, they do have terrible armor after all
@@berzecplot twist: Scharnhorst and Gneisenau used HE
Greetings Admiral, I don't play the game. I am former US Army Intelligence with 4 real wars under my belt. I grew up under the US Navy, which is why I joined the Army. I should have joined the Air Force, but my foresight did not exceed my hindsight. Now at 50, I have but regrets to fuel my days and nights.
I watched you video on the Scharnhorst and I must send my compliments. That was the best intelligence briefing I have heard in years on both the technical and the tactical aspects on naval application of power.
I am now convinced you would probably be the best at explaining to the current pool of fools running our global international navies into oblivion a detailed explanation that Naval Warfare with missile engagements is no longer the same rules as what was taught prior to World War II. Land and air launched missile systems nullify naval capacities in the short range while Sea Air power in long range retains both penetrating and punching power. The paradigm I tried to teach our Military Leaders in the US is land masses now equate to massive overly powerful warships with unlimited range. They get it, but don't.
Thankfully, Naval warfare is not what it was. I am looking to join the War of Warships soon. It would be a pleasant departure. But for an old unemployed veteran with no credit cards. I think I will wait for a while before throwing my hat in.
Kirk
Thank you for your service Kirk Larson. o7
It's been 2 years, and I haven't forgotten, how much have you enjoyed WoWS?
Hopefully you joined us ages ago and have played and had fun. If not... COME ON! It's FREE. You do *not* need to spend money to compete. Spending money only really speeds up your advancement to the final stages of the game. Tier X is basically a level playing field and when it stops being one I'll stop playing. :D (level meaning that anyone can own basically any of those ships with just time and effort... not all ships are created equal though)

History Time with Jingles! You should do these as separate videos, like Ichase with his "Know your ship" series XD
Agreed, I honestly watch the tank reviews to hear about their history. Always look forward to seeing a 40+ minute video from jingles in my sub box
If you dont want to watch the history lesson then by all means skip ahead in the video there is a reason youtube allows you to do that.
And actually talk about the ships unlike Ichase who basically splices documentaries together... not saying it doesn't require time, but seriously.
yus i said the same when he did the video for the emden
This, YES PLEASE
Like the tirpitz, the scharnhorst really wants to be at close range. The torpedoes are obviously a great assest, and the 2/3 of the guns at the front really promotes close range bow duels, AND it has some nasty secondaries :D Live fast die young do 200k damage before you go
Credit where it’s due, the Germans know how to make a good looking ship.
Good looking and tough
Want to hear a good joke about WoWs?
ROYAL NAVY TREE... ^_-
More like Soviet
RN Cruisers are confirmed for sometime this year.
From what I heard the German destroyer tree is next because they could get their hands on their blueprints. The Royal Navy would be a bit harder
Nope Italian tree is best joke.
+MAXZONE47 At least with the British they know the fans want it so they are in the pipeline. They might be the only other navy with a full tech tree
Just for one damn captains ego. In WW1 the germans used to say, "So many lions commanded by sheep" about the english
Wonderful video Jingles. I especially like the footage from WWII. In an earlier video, you lamented the fact that people from the NA server were not restricted to an NDA. Here's the nice thing about your videos: you take the time to review the ship and let us know how she does. Many on the NA server do not inform us about the ship. Instead, they tell us how good they are. It's amazing to witness the egos.
Anyway, yours is the best review. Thanks!!
iChase on NA is very good for ship history too.
He's an educator by trade you may know, as well as a skilled gamer.
Which is probably why I love his videos. I know he's a retired sailor, as am I, so I can relate to his sense of humor as well.
You're going to buy anyways in the future steve.
+Jason Thach I just might!
Everytime Jingles says Gneisenau I crunch my teeth harder and harder.
Oh, and you pronunce Ciliax like Kiliax.
Seems pretty close to me... course, I don't speak German { though I wish I could } so I have to relay on online pronunciation... Still, pretty close...
Robert Charleson The "G" in Gneisenau isnt silent.
+BelaM27X11 I think he's just saying it very softly. Hard to say. At least he's trying.
Cmon give him a break, I know words with "x's" in the middle which you couldn't pronounce in s million years. Jingles is trying bless him
i some times really like you Jingels,
an Auxiliary Cruiser is somting like this..."Picture of an small Ocean Liner", on wich some one stuck some of these..."picture of a shoebox of a gun"...well the rather one sided battle led to this ..."blubb".
Priceless Thumbs up mate
Rawalpindi?
Jingles! I found your easter egg at 8:43 in the top right! Do i get a prize?! :D
I play an aggressive battleship and I love the Scharn, it's one of my favorites.

Do i hear a fucking ice cream truck at about 5:55????
I think so
What did you think the name Jingles meant?
XDDD WOOOOW
Seriously why are British commanders on warships so f*cking stupid? Lets attack two 32.000t battleships with a few 6" guns mounted on a passenger liner. The secondary battery on the Scharnhorst alone outgunned the Rawalpindi. RN tradition, engage when challenged by a hostile ship, dictates suicide by German battleship instead of the reasonable thing. You also could have "accidentally" transmitted a radio message out over long wave radio that you where surrendering, thus stalling the Germans who need to board the ship then, take the crew off and then sink the ship. That takes time and then the Royal Navy squadron close bye ambushes the two ships. You don't die, you probably don't lose the ship, you lured in a RN squadron and they dispatch the German ships. Then you go home for tea and deserved medals.
And then the Japanese where the stupid ones with there Banzai charges. :P
Not stupid at all. Rawalpindi had no way of outrunning the Germans. She could surrender which would be a huge propaganda victory for the Germans and probably against all orders and rules of engagement or she could try to buy time until more Royal Navy assets closed in.
He was old, a sailor from a previous age. Old sailors are pretty stubborn. Not saying it was the right thing to do, but it was probably the only proper thing to do in his mind. That ship could never have outrun those battleships. It was run and die, surrender and (for him atleast) possibly die of age in captivity or fight and die. He probably wanted an honourable end to his naval career. Again, i disagree with that mentality, but i understand it.
And what of the other sailors aboard? Most of them propably were young and had a life ahead of them. Then their lives get fucked up over some old captain who wants to go in a blaze of shit. This is why I really, really detest military chain-of-command. Some fucker high up cocks up and the people below wind up paying with their lives.
Azure Templar Yea, it has its drawbacks. But if you give every soldier the freedom to make strategic choices from himself, you WILL lose every battle, you WILL lose more men than you would had you had them all follow one objective. Its not a case of the chain of command, its a case of someone in a position of authority who was not equal to that task. Jingles himself served in that chain of command, and he had nothing but praise for many of the officers above him.
Azure Templar Fact is if you argue about the necessity of the chain of command, any expert in the field will simply laugh at you and not give you the time of day to explain all the ways in which you are wrong.
Up for 10 min and already has almost 1000 views :)

he totally Styx fanned it and replied

Very cool, are you that old (like me) that you remember Styx, or did your dad turn you on to them?

StuInTokyo slightly before my time, but i've always been a sucker for great pop music, and well, they were always super catchy.
Ah, the mighty Kriegsmarine, more skilled at retreat than the French.
Can't blame them, the British have a knack for gangbanging anything in the water with the Royal Navy lol
Yes because one on one is soooo unbritish xD
It's just a playful joke to make the Wehraboo's upset ;D I got massive respect for the KM surface fleet, they were at a disadvantage against the RN yet still would hold their ground, well, attempt it lol
Michael Fisher
Indeed
Well, to be fair they had limited resources to work with and had to protect their capital ships.
Dude, I have a test at 8 AM. Its 4:20 and I'm here. Let me go FFS!
Back to the salt mines with you! No tests there!
You tube does not go away, and you could have watched this AFTER your test. Don't cry to us if you are still up watching a video.

Oh I do. Retired Military. Ultimate salt mines
+The Mighty Jingles
What is that thing at 3:33 and 8:45 that looks like window blinds installed to an air vent, being flashed open and shut?
A signal lamp, used to transmit morse code at visual range.
Where's the footage from around 11:00 from? It looks more like cinematic footage rather than Pathé.
those are model ships i think. footage mixed with real stuff that was recorded in 1940 and used in a movie called "sink the Bismarck".
you can find the real footage showing Prinz Eugen, Bismarck and the duell between them and Hood/Wales here on youtube too.
Signal lamp used to signal other ships. You don't need wireless set to use morse code if they are in visual range.
I think it's a light with shutters, for visual transmission of morse code
Only you could spend 12 minutes talking about the history of a battleship and have it still be interesting
I must say; Jingles I love these reviews. The reviews are excellent, but what makes it great for me is the history lesson on the ships. I honestly did not know about any German bbs other than the Tirpitz and Bismark in WW2.
That is so British. "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" (Was hard enough). "Shit".
the 1st 12 minutes of this video is like how the history channel used to be, i love it!
I think you were too quick to dismiss the HE, it might only have 20% fire chance, but with such a quick reload you still have just as good a chance of starting fires as any other BB, and you can reload to AP rather quickly if they give you the side
I can sleep when I'm dead. That's why I'm so useful in the salt mines.
talking about armor in world of warships just doesn't have the same feel to it like wot.
Yes, i have armor, yes i angle my ship. Doesn't make a difference, get damaged either way. Just keep yourself from the citadels is all you can do.
The difference is that you can't armor all of your ship. It would sink like a stone (or alternatively have thin enough armor to be absolutely useless). Belt- and deck armor does work but even if you bounce everything that hits your armored parts, there's plenty unarmored stuff which can get damaged. In most cases that damage wouldn't actually sink a ship but the game doesn't really allow for disabling without sinking (especially since small turrets are much harder to knock out - before, I had plenty ships effectively disarmed before they were sunk).
well, you can allways consider being destroyed by depleting your HP pool without fire and/or penetrations as being so filled by enemy artillery shells you just sink under the sheer weight of it :D
Comparing ships to tanks.
That's why you also have about ten times as much of an HP pool as you do in WoT.
Angling does work. Cruiser AP will definitely bounce on angled cruisers and possibly carriers and battleships and battleship AP will definitely bounce on angled battleships.
HE not so much.
Are you sure you are not reading from the South East Asia server game play book (about the Brits effort to sink this ship )...Look for the people named Hiro & Yamato & Sniper or killer.......... Has to be ..... Oh lemming train too H10 dam there is 9 of you there against that 1 dd oh and they managed to cap how is that possible to lose that cap when you are %90 of our team Vrs %20 of theirs , come on we need help at the other 2 caps..........you have been suspended from sending chat messages untill your team grows a brain ......meanwhile...... 9 ships sitting behind island you go first nah you go first no you go , ill go after you good sir , im waiting for the DD ...... add infinity SEA server game play ......Seriously....just sayin ....just not on the SEA server you have been suspended from sending chat messages until team grows a collective brain ...Can't be too carefull ......
got this ship for free from a crate
Oh yay! Story time with Uncle Jingles!
No seriously, I love this format Jingles, keep it up! It's interesting to hear what's behind all those ships or tanks!
Always flashes a smile on my face when I see one of your videos in my sub box appearing!
The reason you scharnhorst struggles so much is that 283mm guns will overmatch anything up to 19.79mm. If the deck armour is 20mm then you cannot penetrate any shots unless they hit the side. A great deal of cruisers have more than 20mm deck armour, bow and stern armour. Where a 410mm shell(nagato) will overmatch over 28mm for consistent penetrations, the 283mm guns just bounce. A lot of cruisers have armour that will be overmatched by other battleships but the small calibre of the scharnhorst cannot take advantage of that mechanic.
thats exactly what he said in the video
Kevin Pierce
He repeatedly states that you need the flat side of the ship, overmatch applies only to heavily angles targets. I think he means the guns have lower penetration (which is also true) but I'm not even sure if he is aware of the 14.3 overmatch rules and how they affect things.
Your math is waaaaaay off.
Joseph Pöppe
where?
Over match, is when a rounds diameter is X times larger than the armor plate it strikes; if that occurs, then it auto defeats the armor. 20mm of armor will not bounce a 283mm armor piercing shell. The weight of the shell would crush through that 20mm tin foil. No matter the angle.
It seems like firing HE is not the dumbest idea in this ship
against angled enemies that is
HE sucks in this ship
+Tanks Explosions Anime (T.E.A) or other BBs
H.E would suck because the shells are so small
Not entirely. Against angled battleships it is better
Having the ship in port for weeks and reading comments and WoWS forum makes me want to laugh at the despair and hype of the general populace
Muhahaha!
I don't play World of Warships, but I really like the history lessons at the begining of these review videos. Great work!
Is that an ice cream van I can hear in the background at around 6mins?
Sink the Bismark footage :O Nice!
I saw it too :D
Hey Trekie, Shake it!
you aren't going to stop bringing that up :P
I'm so thankful for your review of the Scharnhorst Jingles. You saved me the fifty to sixty bucks I was planning to spend on a ship that I thought I wanted, based on the hype. I'm just average at best at this game, and based on your review of this ship, I would have regretted my purchase.
Looks like my Nagato, a real tier 7 BB, and a really good one, will be seeing a lot of action for the next couple of months, as it will be the perfect tool for seal clubbing all the noobs playing the Scharnhorst.
LOL, yep.
Really seems like WG needs to readjust their armor pen values for 11 inch shells then, they hardly seem different from 8 inch shells apart from damage.
also, the wild dispersion (why 8 inch guns are laser accurate at 11km but 11 inch guns spread like after wank piss makes no sense to me)
Btw what is that port supposed to be? Wind farm and huge solar panels? O_ô
I think Yokosuka
its a port from an anime called Arpeggio of Blue Steel, and its a seriously awesome anime! i advise watching the first episode at least :)
It's not from an anime... It's a real port and naval base. South of Tokyo.
no its from an anime that takes place in the future.
Really? Well, then I must be from the future being as how I lived there for 3 years...
Finally, they let you put it out!!Thank you oh mighty Gnomish Rear Admiral of the Sunken section of the Salt mines
Yes, the "G" in "Gneisenau" IS pronounced in German.
@justin lloyd The ship is called Gneisenau you dumbfuck. Atleast have a clue before you correct someone
Serkay64 :3 maybe... just maybe, he was showing how it was pronounced. Now go back to the salt mine! AWAY WITH YOU FIEND!!!!
@@lbhammers4841 But that is not how its pronounced
I must say that after browsing mostly useless reviews on the new premium ships i finally found one youtuber who is not so full of himself that we have to see him all the time in the lower corner of the video doing lame acting. Also have to add that you nailed this by doing the history lesson added to the review. I really like the old footage of the ships with the detailed commentary added by you Jingles. Fantastic work! Any reviews on the Leningrad by any chance? Planning to buy it along with one of the german monsters.
4:10 Why you so damn good at explaining things?!?!
I will be getting this as soon as I can, will go well with the Tirpitz I have
Jingles you kindly took my remark of pronouncation of the Nashorn once. German has no silent letters, so it is not neisenau as in the english Gnome, you actually pronounce the G in Gneisenau. :)
Well, we do have silent letters, but mostly holdovers in names from linguistic days gone by. Like the "e" in Soest, which actually takes the job of a stretcher for the "o", because somehow nobody can be bothered to just put an "h" there instead.
Taluien
Thats untrue as it is a rhineian dialekt, where the -oe- ist pronounced as oo, there is no -h- there. Similar as -oi- is pronounced as an -oo- with a throaty -ch-, as in Grevenbroich, which is pronounced as Grevenbrooch.
So is it Gun-Isen-Nau? Im russian, you see.
no, Gneisenau is pronounced Gneisenau... simple as that :D
Tenel For once I'm Serious about Something's Pronunciation. And I find Tenel. To the Gulag.
Please Jingles, make a preview about the Prinz Eugen, how competitive it is, compare to the Kutuzov.
I wanted to buy one of them, but the Kutuzov is not available, and just by looking at the numbers the Prinz Eugen looks quite competitive to me. Still hasitating tho, I really want to know what you would say about that vessel.
Please Jingles, I beg you!
Looks like you really pissed off the NA community contributers.
Emilio Moreno usa sucks
Jingles tell war gaming they are idiots the 28 cm SK C/34 guns could penetrate over 300mm of armor out to 15,000 meters. So all of your bounces she have been penetrations against those cruisers with 127mm / 5" belts.
I hate Imperial measurements for kanone calibre. Keep it metric so we all know what you're talking about! 28,3cm or 283mm! None of this 11" bullshit no one can be bothered to convert.
American's learn it before highschool.
deathlegionair I'm sure I learned the conversion, but I can't be bothered to remember it.
Stop bitching he gave the caliber of the guns in metric too. Its just 11 inch guns sound a lot cooler than 28 centimeter guns.
Right so a Jagdpanzer E100 has a 6.6" cannon and that sounds way cooler? No, it doesn't. It sounds like it has a pea-shooter. 17,0cm cannon? Yeah, THAT is a monstrous cannon.
I know how big an inch is. I live in a country where Imperial measurements are the official method for conducting measurements.
Game is crap 221 now...feed up with russian company hackers and lottery crap to get new ships that is worth to consider at all - Nerfed the dy after you by it ...and the shit is this...2 players with the samme ship got diff stats depending on how much $$$ you put into the crap Russian oligark gme...
Jingles you really pissed off Notser
Oh dear...how sad...never mind! :)
Yeah cause Notser didnt listen to what Jingles actually said XD
Yeah he also pissed off a majority of the NA forum.
+Yanislav Valchev way to call a nice guy a nobody
Notser has got him beat at gameplay & tactics though!
just watched another you tuber vid on this ship. think he was having a go at you regarding the comments you made about the NA non disclosure reckons that they are not breaking it as it only protects the first person and stats of the ships. NOTSER is his name btw but guess they have there argument and you have yours
Wasn't the accuracy of the real life scharnhorst quite good? Wg at it again
Well the german BB's focus on close range fighting (with the turtleback armor, making them hard to cit at close range). By reducing the accuracy they kinda force you to get closer and not snipe from the back.
well, but still the Scharnhorst got the longest confirmed hit on an enemy warship with a bit over 24km.
I just wait for the first fast little russian destroyer who fuck the weak torpedocourt of german battleships... cause they have to get that close to hit the russians even russian bullshit torpedos (that WG will use as a ballancing excuse) cant miss germans... We all already seen that piss bias in WoT.
+Randleray I'm just going to assume you have mental damage and need help because no one in their right mind would come out with a statement like that.
I couldn't make sense of it either.
Buhu unrealistic.... the German 28cm were better at penetrating armour then british 14 inch guns! Stupid balancing ;-)
Love the history part!
Question: If the SCHARNHORST's 28.3cm gun AP shells -- which are scale models of the 38cm ammo used by the BISMARCK/TIRPITZ -- have trouble with even 12.7cm cruiser belt armor if angled, how come the IOWA with its 31cm belt armor has no such resistance against the 40.6-46cm AP shells of other higher-tier BBs? 12.7/28.3 = 0.45 armor/shell size ratio. 31/46 = 0.67, which is ***50% thicker*** in this ratio and yet, from my experience, angling the IOWA doesn't do much of anything against the larger BB guns. Something is not right here!!! If you are going to apply the rather incorrect rules for armor used in this game, at least the rules should apply evenly for all shells and armor...
Note: Anti-torpedo protection are not "armored belts". Many do not use any armor-class steel and those that do only have it to beef up the rather thin innermost bulkhead of the protection to resist tearing from concussion shock. The depth of protection liner is due to layers of thin spaced steel bulkheads, mostly separating alternating empty spaces (voids) and water-filled layers, to slowly "roll with the punch" (the "water-hammer" from the torpedo warhead blast bubble moving the water outward very, very fast) and give under the impact, soaking it up one layer at a time until it hopefully stops the punch before that innermost bulkhead, though larger torpedoes will usually get through -- at least, even if penetrated by the blast, the damage caused is contained to a smaller depth into the ship rather than cutting the ship in half, as sometimes happens to destroyers.
where did u get all this footage? is this autentic or from some film?
He filmed it himself during the war.
nice
+Jognt That's not true idiot. He wasn't alive back them
MarLap2000
*facepalm*
+Arrivederci Some of it is from"Der Deutschen worchenschau" which was the ww2 nazi propaganda news.
there's heaps of episodes on youtube
Can we, just for a second, appreciate the Admiral Ackbar joke at 28:45? Well played, Jingles. Well played.
If the AP isn't great on penetrating angled cruisers how is the HE?
he doesn't need to penetrate
The HE is deliberately not very good to stop IDIOTS from taking advantage.
Its HE has a 20% fire chance, which means with its fast reload it'll be pretty good at harassing battleships
HE is great, many BBs are switching to HE because of higher damage output. I like to keep my AP though, even though I overpen so much.
i think you should go look at vidoes of how world of warships armor works...
ap hits and has to pen....
HE explodes on contact, and its damage is biased on how much armor is their...
ap to the thick armor on a well angled ship will do 0 damage.
HE to the thick armor on a well angled ship will do SOME damage...1000 or 2000
HOWEVER!!!
ap on a broadside/weak armor will sometimes one shot the ship. were talking 90,000 damage per salvo...(theirs an over pen mechanic also...but...watch youtube videos)
HE on a broad side/weak armor will do more damage..... 5000 or 6000
but isnt as good as he
if your in a battle ship you almost never fire HE....unless its a destroyer or the ship is STAYING angled.
the rest of the time.... your waiting for a good shot to land many AP hits...
Mr.Jingles sir, what do you do on the poop deck?
+dave bennett working what?
poop.....
it had to be said ;)
you poop at the head
You swab it.
get murmansk because seal clubbing low-mid tiers >=D
Which ships can be played with focus on secondary batterie (not AA)? (Is there a guide?) I am planning to skill the commander and use equipment focuisng sec bat on the upcoming german bbs. Do they fit that "role"? Thanks for help, folks!
Really great video! I have been watching your channel for two years now and out of all videos I watched, I Iiked this one best (I love every video from your ship review series in particular). I wanted to ask you when you will release your review on the Dunkerque. Because I can`t decide which new premium battleship to buy. Thank you Jingles for all the great videos you make. Keep it up!
I wish Jingles was my history teacher back in a day...
Ah story time with Jingles.. Now, where did i put those popcorns?.
@Jingles, why dont you skip over the channel and visit some of the old bunker beaches and the site of the great battle of jutland , in Denmark? .
5:36 - At first it looked like he was holding an RPG.
I love how you do your research on the history of the ships. I feel like im watching a history channel special! Well done Sir!
Looks like staying up until 4:30 AM has it's perks. Procrastination at it's finest!
Looks like we can expect a "How to Scharnhorst" from atsf sometime in the near future
Scharnhorst and Gneisenau: World War II comic relief
HEY jingles can you do a video tutorial on how to download this game bc i cant some one help if not jingles ( I'm on mac)
I really love the history lessons you do about warships Jingles, please keep up the great work.
fucking yards jingles, i had to stop the video and google that shit >.
You should Defiantly do a ship review on the Derzki Tier 3 Russian Destroyer class ship itz overpowered.
I love the history lessons you do with archival footage and pictures keep it up. =D
Yeah, I have to agree with Jingles, I personally, WILL LOVE IT, but I do have 57% win ratio on BB's so I am fully familiar with how to place shots correctly and read the map / game so as to take advantage or put myself in a favorable situation !!!
It's not easy to do, and I had to play thousands of battles with BB's alone to learn how to do it, but man is it rewarding once you understand it :) :D
nice video and great informations as always! Greetz from Wilhelmshaven :)
Should've made the video a second longer, to make it 33:33.
I absolutely love the Scharnhorst!! It is my favourite ship and then the Tirpitz!!
Looks like a great ship to jump to if you're an experienced IJN cruiser captain
Tiralalaaaaaaa tiralalaaaa. Tiralalaaaa tiralala hoi! hoi!
Interesting.... cause when you explained the history about The Scharnhorst, it took a lot of man power and ships + Torpedo bombers to take down The Scharnhorst until she eventually capsized.
And then in your gameplay the same thing happened. Multiple ships engaged The Scharnhorst :D. Good videos man and very informative in regards to the history of the ships in game.
I always love playing the ships that carry a history that ignites my love for War Machines (Scharnhorst, Bismarck, Tirpitz, Graf Spee, Prinz Eugen, Yamato (Musashi if they added her), Nagato, Colorado, Fuso etc.)
But in game it seems like they made the Scharnhorst a Brawler of some kind.
How did the Scharnhorst get its symbol? It looks so much like the real Bosnian coat of arms that maybe Germany didn't just "borrow" the swastika.
It has this symbol in real life too.
Jack Zhan Asking where it got it from m8 xD
Darkshark they seem to have a tradition to put a coat of arms on every ship. I can't find the exact origin but something closer than the Bosnian coat of arms came up when I searched for scharnhorst family coat of arms
I hope they will add the Dutch version, only known by the name 'Project 1047'. The ship was planned to be very similar to the Scharnhorst, but better in all area's except the armor on some places. The ship was intended to be in service in 1944 along with her sister ships, although it is not clear how many ships in total there would have been if indeed completed. Claims differ per source from 2 ships up to 5 ships. The ships were to be deployed to counter the Japanese if it ever came to that. Unfortunately with the war coming far too soon, the ships would have been way too late in the area to do anything at all. But also construction was never started, although the Germans did have the main turrets ready and waiting for the first ship. Unfortunately this proofed to be useless. So far I understood, the guns were transported to Norway and used in Hitler's wall.

What could the Dutch ship be like in the game? Well think about the scharnhorst being better in every single way but worse with the armor. Even holds better AA guns for longer ranges! A Scharnhorst vs. a Project 1047 ship would end easily in a defeat for the Scharnhorst. The German would likely not even stand a remote chance.
Well i was thinking about getting one. If it's only capable of doing respectable damage when something is side-on, i might want to consider a Bismarck instead... We'll see.
It feels like they've done something to the penetration mechanics lately to make them feel better. My Bayern went from doing fuck-all nothing to suddenly penning almost every salvo on cruisers, and even battleships, i've even flung AP at destroyers and had more regular penetrations than overpens. I dunno what to make of it. $40 is quite a lot to "test" out if i like it or not.
Though i suppose in time i could grow to become more experienced with it, and play it accordingly. In that case, the $40 would pay for itself..... hmm decisions decisions.
I have had worse ships in my port However, this is “the” ship that you must gain glory, no camping in the rear. As you said you have to know your limitations.
BTW, it was a shame that your team mates abandoned you. Maybe they can buy the “Backbone” module next time? Victory!
You know what's fun to do with Scharnhorst? Load HE, follow your destroyer into the cap, and surprise derp the enemy DD right in his stupid face, then load whatever you need to terrorize the cruisers who went to support the guy you just blapped.
Bonus if you going in gives the rest of your team the backbone to actually push.
Normal 8" heavy cruiser shells can reliably penetrate broadside battleships outside the main belt and in some cases even the citadel, so I don't expect any problems in doing the same with 11" guns. Scharnhorst looks a bit like an up-gunned Baltimore with armor similar to a Japanese battleship, a deadly combination that should rock in tier 7.
Renown had 15" guns if I remember correctly, she was pretty much a Hood with 1 turret less. She may have officially been a battle cruiser, but against a 'battle ship' with 11" guns, I would always put my money on Renown.
Since she was built for raiding while retaining high speed and heavy armor, I nicknamed the Scharnhorst design: Viking Battleships.
been playing wows a lot lately and at the mid tiers this game is so much fun to play and its far more aggressive than youd think but at the high tiers due to the mass amounts of torps in the water because of high tier destroyers so tier 7 personally is my perfect tier :D its where you get some powerful ships but your not gonna run in to gearings and fletchers every other game which can be painful from experience in the tirpitz those destroyers can light you in all 4 areas in about 6 salvos and they fire every 3s or less so they wreck you so quick.
just going to say before ive watched the video so no odea if it was mentioned or not the gneiseanu should at least have the option of the scharnhorst guns. its really dodgy to not even give people that option and people mostly like to decide for themselves what they prefer not be told you cant have something. if anything this will limit the sales they get because a lot of people only by certain prems adter experience in the regular tech tree machine of the same class or tier. like the murmansk and marblehead being very like the omaha as an example. with the fuijin and the minekaze for another example. with the scharnhorst people cant just get the gneisenau and then decide if they want it because the guns are only 15 inch no 11 inch option at all. (normally i will buy a prem after finishing the grind on an equal tiered ship of the same class like the texas i just got and i like it far more than the new york)
I've found switching rounds is essential for this ship. It's HE is "good enough" so shoot it at everything that isn't broadside. And since the reload is fairly quick, you can anticipate the target's turn, load the AP, then hit the broadside. The Torps are the delicious icing on the cake.
As a community contributer Jingles. Can you ask Wargaming if they can give Bismarck her famous Baltic paint work as a camo pattern in game. I think it will make Bismarck look more historically aqurit. P.s Your awesome!
I like how you pronounce it Neisenau instead of Gneisenau, swallowing the G. You have to spell the G like at the beginning gorgeous. Not like in Kickerbockers. ;) I know, not easy for non-native German speakers.
Jingles, the first clip where you shot at the cruiser, he just started moving, which you could see from the smoke coming fro mthe smokestacks, so more than half your shells landed behind him, and since he was turning into you, his ass hung back which means your shells that where accurately aimed, fell short of the the rear of him :)
Ineresting how many Ships where neccessary to destroy one German Battleship! Same counts for the Bismarc. It seems to me as if the Royal NAvy would have lost the Atlantic if the Germans would have had the same Tonnage!
Concerning the SCHARNHORST's AP projectile penetration: I have a copy of G. Kdos. 100, "Secret Command Document #100", entitled (English translation) "Basis and Guidance in the Choice of Optimum Fighting Range and Projectile Type"( OKW, Berlin, 1940), which I call the German Navy's "Gunnery Bible". It has range tables, penetration charts, discussions about armor and projectiles, and several German-vs-British or -French ship battle scenarios as to what the selected German ship should do, including a HOOD versus SCHARNHORST battle chart (no HOOD versus BISMARCK, unfortunately). At 15 km, the striking velocity of the 330 kg (727.5 lb) 28 cm (actually 28.3 cm) Psgr.m.K. L/4,4 (capped AP shell of 4.4 caliber length) is 575 m/sec (1886 ft/sec) and the angle of fall is 10.5 deg.. At 45 deg. Target Angle (90 deg. means belt is broadside-on/flat) for a US cruiser with 12.7 cm (5") c.1941 Thick Chill Class "A" face-hardened vertical waterline belt armor (KC armor with a 55% face thickness, somewhat thicker face than is used in most KC-type armors) the angle of impact (vertical plus horizontal) is 46 deg (close enough). To punch a hole entirely through the plate (throwing armor chunks into the area behind the plate), but not penetrate itself through the hole, requires only 337 m/sec (1107 ft/sec), to punch completely through the 12.7 cm plate requires 387.4 m/sec (1271 ft/sec), and to penetrate completely with no damage to the internal explosive charge and fuze requires 438.6 m/sec (1439 ft/sec) -- these German shells are somewhat brittle and break easily at obliquities greater than 30 degrees or so. As you can see, the game's SCHARNHORST guns are so degraded from the real guns that they are not much better than at penetration as the game's other high-end heavy cruiser guns, such as the cruiser YORCK has in this game. Since the YORCK's gun can punch through the belts of the more-thin-skinned battleships, somebody has been playing fast and loose in degrading SCHARNHORST, but not the smaller heavy cruiser guns. YORCK, as far as gun-power in concerned, is better than SCHARNHORST in this game due to its faster rate of fire and more-or-less equal penetration against cruiser and thinner BB armor. I can understand some "nerfing", but this is totally ridiculous. SCHARNHORST is a heavy tank armed with just a machinegun. I think that most people overrate German ships, but you have to give credit where credit is due; SCHARNHORST was a great battle-cruiser in the old-school sense of "a ship to battle cruisers". Not in this game, though. Too bad...
Jingles is very confused. The Shiny Horse is clearly a very big destroyer.
Scharnhorst is a good example of why Kongo is such an op Battlecruiser... 283mm it’s slightly too few and a too short marge to be a such good cruiser HK, but 356mm with +30knots speed and good manoeuvrability is the ideal compromise.
Agreed on most of Jingles said (and well said ! Like always, excellent revue, I would like Many more videos like this in 2018 on new/others ships).
The only Jingles feeling I disagreed with is accuracy of main battery guns (242m), it’s not tolerable, it’s badly inaccurate with Scharnhorst imo.
accuracy must be taken in count with caliber of the gun and max range concerned ship per ship... 242m for Scharnhorst range is fine, BUT compared with ONLY 283mm caliber it’s deeply bad !
And usually, in average, German accuracy is limited or pretty bad in WoWS.
A good accuracy is the Japanese tier8 Kii for example: 410mm guns and only 223m dispersion for 20km range (19.8km if i remember well ?)... for Kii, the issue is reduced max range instead, but very accurate 5x2 410mm main guns !
And Jingles pointes that well in an other video (don’t remember wich, I guess it’s about the Hood or the Tirpitz ?).
So,
Only compare dispersion between guns needs nuances, it must integrate caliber concerned and max range (where the dispersion value is applied for each one) in 1vs1 between 2 ships to really know if they are accurate or not.
And considering Scharnhorst has only 283mm guns, 242m (wich is globally in average for all BBs - 305 to 460mm caliber - taking count of calibers and range, it’s always between 220 and 280m accuracy approx), is pretty disappointing.
But that’s just a small part, all the rest of the video is very pertinent and revelant.
I really hope Jingles will give us more videos like this review in 2018 and later on others ships he didn’t yet ! 👍👌
