I was there this year on opening weekend, and again on closing weekend, my second year at the Wiesn. It's always great fun. I've already made plans to go next year - hopefully the weather will be better!
french canadian here. I went in 2007, travelling alone, and actually got there on the final sunday because of itinerary changes. I did go and take a peek inside one of the tents, but i really wanted to sample some beer and mingling, so i ended up in a "merry-go-round" bar outside (I think it was the Fransischaner bier one). I was trying my best to communicate in german (with my half-dozen word vocabulary, lol). A guy next to me, seeing my dismay, gave me some english help and the barmaid, who probably thought i was making fun of her, suddenly understood... The guy was from Denmark and made the trip each year with his friends. He told me he was a member of the "Ten beer club" over in Denmark. I had a fun time, and definitely have to go back soon, AFTER learning some of the songs!! Tschuss!
That's the most immersive piece I've ever seen on Oktoberfest in München. It gave me more feel for it than anything I've seen before. Good narration, interview, and editing.
@@FelifromGermany Du hast meinen Tag gerettet! You saved my day! My mom (I, 24, still live at home) had forbidden me to go because of Corona... Did you feel sick afterwards? Anyway THANK YOU! Your video made it feel like I was there!
Haha. My mom (German) took me to Germany recently after so many years and as soon as we landed she said “oh no, we are dressed like Americans”. Hahaha. 😂😂😂😂.
I spent two years in Germany while I was in the US Air Force, stationed in the Hunsrück region near the Mosel River valley areas. I had the opportunity to go to Oktoberfest on two occasions with several of my friends. Watching this video brought back so many wonderful memories for me. I’m dating myself here lol because I was there from 1988-1990. I found out without a doubt the best beer in the world is in Germany in general, and the O-fest specifically, delicious food (I love German food btw). I am about 50% German, having gotten German blood from both my grandmothers. I hope someday to return to visit and take my wife and my now adult children over there with me. Thanks for sharing this and all the other videos. Both of you seem to be an awesome young couple, and I hope and pray the best for your two as it would appear that you will be spending the rest of your lives together. God bless and take care! Tschüss!
Based on my own visits to Germany, Brits and Germans are like separated siblings! We both love our beer, love gathering with friends in pubs/beer halls with plenty of hearty food plus singing in groups at the top of our voices! I always love hanging out in Germany and look forward to returning soon... Beautiful place, great people, great food and great beer!!
@@carlloccisano8849 Your answer is completely retarded. Everyone has bad times, don't forget that Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany and America itself slaughtered Indians, practiced slavery, had segregation and the Vietnam War with Agent Orange. Don't talk about morality if you're not better. Germany is much more than WW2, don't forget all the philosophers like Kant, Nietzsche and so on or musicians like Beethoven, Handel, Bach and so on or the Oktoberfest, Christmas market or all the companies like SAP, Carl Zeiss, Siemens and so on or the car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW and so on and then the fairy tales that were later stolen or changed by Disney, they originally came from the Brothers Grimm and then the first moon landing was mainly influenced by a German, Werner von Braun.
Ignore this Answer from Carl, thank your for the comment! Maybe you should visit Hamburg too, it’s has some Hanseatic Flair with English Aspects. And maybe try „Franzbrötchen“.
@@liqiz1755 Thanks but I didn’t see it. 😊 But as an example, my son and I were in Munich in February. Shared a small restaurant table with a couple of guys who’d been to the Bayern match earlier. 4 hours later the four of us had drunk a lot of beer, discussed and laughed about sport, politics, brexit, work, married life and then joined them (at their invitation) in Kennedys for some late night karaoke. Great days!!
Ben nailed it on the head. Said it perfectly. There is no amount of reading, video watching, or research you can do that will prepare you for the scale of Oktoberfest. Yiu really do need to experience it to understand.
Big fan of yours but first time giving feedback. Your videos are all great but what makes this one even more valuable is the contrast of your experience and expertise of being a German native and then i believe your boyfriends feedback who kind of represents many of us if we went over there. I have visited and love Munich but never for Oktoberfest. Keep up the great videos
Such a good time. Thank you. My father was stationed in Germany in the Army and I have a photo of him in the Munich HB and I also have two beer steins. One is ceramic and the other glass. He loved Germany so much. He would talk about it often.
As Feli explained in an other video, the word "Stein" is not German, and nobody knows where Americans got this term from. It just means "stone" and is sometimes used for the ceramic, as "artificial stone". Never for a glass. Correct term would be "Krug" which means jar. But Glas is OK also.
Feli, I went to Deutschland for the first time this year and experienced Oktoberfest fist hand! What a blast!!! Everything you covered is spot on and people are sooo friendly. I never felt out of place. It may help that I am a good part German and look as much, but I will be going back again next year! Keep up the great content. PROST🍻🍻
Thanks to you and Ben for letting me live vicariously through the two of you. The last time I was at the Oktober Fest was 1980.
@@alexanderhei5665 im getting that info to be sure and will edit after, im the worst. It was always just like vinegar and oils and was usually warm as well. Was the best My grandmother was raised and born in ulm
As barfuss already asked, where did your grandmother come from? As far as I know there is one big difference between potato salads in Germany or the german speaking countries. With or without mayonnaise. My grandma was born in Silesia, so my favorite potato salad is with mayonnaise, bacon, coocked egg and pickles. But in the southern regions like Bavaria and Austria that is very uncommon.
Just swung by to say the NFL visited Munich today and ALL of the American sports media was completely blown away that MUNICH was singing Country Roads by John Denver in the stands. And thanks to your videos, I know why they were sinning it! 😊
Literally had tears in my eyes at the end because you look so happy and i was in the same tent on the Last evening and it was just amazing to be back after 2 years 🥹🫶🏻
Sorry I'm late :D I was like "nuh, I've seen so many Oktoberfest Videos, they're usually all the same" but now I watched it and i'm stunned! This was the best Oktoberfest Video I've ever seen. Your stories and the narration was so well done, it almost felt like I was there. Top quality!
I think he means that most people think that Germans wear such clothes, but it's just a traditional dress in the south of Germany that is usually only worn on special occasions. But abroad, this image of Germans is mostly shown on ..... or how we invade other countries or Reddit forums.
What fun! You make a great couple! I visited Germany and six other countries in 1973 as a teenager touring with a youth orchestra, and have never forgotten how wonderful my experiences in Germany were. Bavaria stole my heart. Part of my family immigrated from there to the American colonies in the early 1730s. I would go again in a heartbeat. Maybe I should put that on my bucket list. All the best!
Some buddies of mine came up from Sicily in 1986. We rode the train up the Italian boot to Milan then bussed through to a small town outside Munich. We stayed for 3 days.We rode a train into Munich every day. Got terribly drunk each night. Had a side trip to Neuschwanstein. Magnificent castle. Was an amazing time!
That’s it. That very last scene. Singing your heart out, slightly drunken, with big grin and a slightly melancholic look in your eyes. There are so many clips that show the spectacular, the ridiculous and sometimes the disgusting sides of the Wiesn. But they all failed to catch that moment when, at some point in the evening, that magic unfolds. When that largely unknown band has charged up the tent to a level of energy, that easily outshines any high-profile stadium event. Then, the crowd seems to become one huge organism. Singing, dancing, laughing, drinking. This goes on for an hour or so. Finally, during the last song, usually something slightly sentimental, the energy reaches its peak. Folks lying in their arms, hugging people they’ve never seen before, many overwhelmed, with watery eyes. I think that very last scene captured that moment very nicely. And then it’s over. 100000 people flood the street in front of the tents in a matter of minutes. An epic chaos, but 99.9% have a big grin on their face. I’ve been to the Wiesn last Friday. When the band started the last song, I was arm in arm with two colleagues, singing. A few meters away stood a young woman, alone, probably waiting for someone, looking at us with a slightly sad smile. I understood and nodded to her. She basically flew into our arms and together we sang „Angels“ with all we had. When the song was over we all gave her hug and away she was with a huge smile. Really, that’s what it is all about. That’s my Wiesn. People may complain about the Bierpreis and what not. Obviously they never made it to that point.
Hi, an ex-pat here in Munich. I just wanted to add a tiny detail, regarding kids "am Wiesen". I got my son with me (2,5yr) this year. And there where people in civilian with accreditaions. Who approached us and told us that they are from "Wiese kinder und jugendhilfe" (Oktoberfest kids and youth help - translated literally) and they informed me that kids should not be on Oktoberfest longer then 8 pm. And that we should slowly walk out. Although at the "Oide Wiesen" there where kids running around even around 10 pm. But "Oide Wiesen" is for families so maybe that is the reason.
We went on Saturday, 1 October. It had rained most of the day until around 4 pm. The rain came down so much and rolled off my poncho, my boots were full of water! Fortunately my socks are wool and my feet stayed nice and warm. Since we are a little older, we paid the 4 € to get into the "Oide Wiesen" and enjoyed the old activities. I really enjoyed the the shooting gallery. Lots of fun!
I love everything about this video: the food, beer, music, rides and everyone filled with the party vibes. I'm certain you guys had an amazing time at Oktoberfest. Thanks for capturing some of the most exciting things to see and do there, thanks for sharing some of the happiest moments of people having fun. Keep up the great work guys 😍💯
I am very pleased that Ben liked it so much and that his expectations were exceeded. But you in a dirndl, especially in the last few minutes of the video, that's the highlight. 😍😘❤
Reason is the builders put in the cheaper shower head so after you buy your house you can change it. Mainly the more expensive homes have the shower heads you are used to in Germany.
I attended Oktoberfest each year from 84-88 great time. Must be so much better now without the smoking...I smoked backed then, it was so full of smoke. Had such a great time, every time... I loved the huge Wienerwald stand with all the wooden chickens in the windows!!!
It was fun to see Oktoberfest through Ben's eyes. It has been quite a while since I was a 10 year old in his shoes. Brought back great memories. I am looking forward to Ben's photography from the whole trip. His picture of the canal in Venice was breathtaking.
I've been in Munich 4 times now at Oktoberfest time , but never have gone in. After this video, i guess I'll have to try it out. I stay with old exchange student near Erding. One thing you may have commented on already is how bundled up Germans and Austrians get when the temperature goes below like 20. Living in Pacific Northwest now, shorts and tee shirts are ok until like 10 degrees. Oh and another thing, shoe horns, when you leave the house you get handed a shoe horn, which I have to say I have no idea how to use. I like the videos, I'm Austrian, emigrated to Ohio in 1956 at age 7, so my German vocabulary is like a second graders. these videos evoke good memories.
shoehorn is easy, just stick it in the heel of the shoe, and slide your foot in. It just makes sure your heel actually goes in. it is much thinner than your fingers :) As far as bundling up goes. try wearing shorts and t-shirts when you are outside all day. here in the US nobody is really outside long. house to the car, car to the office, office to the car, car to 5 guys for lunch, car to the office, and so forth. 1 minute tops. i live it every day. even if it is not really that cold here in georgia.
I lived in a NYC suburb during my childhood. There was an amusement park called "Playland" (used in scenes for the movie "Big"). In one building they had several rides to test your skills of staying upright, including a teufelrad (with an american name which I have forgtten). That was in the 1940's, but I guess things like that have been scrapped by america's increasingly litigious society.
Feli, Ben watching this video brought back old memories. In the summer of '69 I met my future wife during a summer study tour . We were based in Seefeld Tirol, but made several trips to Munich. The Englische Gärten was amazing, but as 15 year old Americans we were most impressed that we could get ein Bier pro 1 DM (25 cents at the time) . I expect that we would be splitting one between the two of us at today's prices. While we have visited Germany a couple of times since then we never got a chance to see Oktoberfest.
This year was my first time going to Oktoberfest. I was there the week of 26 September. It was one of the very best times I have ever had and absolutely intend on going back. It's the largest "keg party" I've ever been to and it was nothing but a great time.
Great video Feli! I’m half German and have been to many Octoberfests in America especially New Braunfels where I live! But I went to Germany to visit cousins for the first time in 2016 and it was amazing! I didn’t know about the lines and rain we waited for two hours but finally one of the beer girls let us in because she felt sorry for my 5 year old son in Lederhosen! Anyway it was really fun and want to go again!!
It sounded like a blast. I'd like to go someday, but it would be to join up with a traditional band or polka band playing my trumpet. I'm a social drinker who doesn't drink beer, so that kind of dampens the fun of going to a beer tent or garden. And I'm also Jewish, so that cuts out a lot of the traditional Bavarian fare for food. Nope! I just want to sit in with a band and play my trumpet and enjoy Oktoberfest that way. :D
im going to Oktoberfest next week...This will be my 3rd time and first time back since the 80's! Though ive been before, Oktoberfest is on my Bucket List. Why? It's the most fun ive ever had meeting ppl from all over the world having a great time. Hope to see you there and PROST.
I went to the Munich Oktoberfest once. Took lots of pictures. Stayed about an hour. Now, I lived in Germany for a couple years, and went to all kinds of fests. There were wine fests, beer fests, asparagus fests, fall fests, Christmas fests (Christmas markets), etc. For me, it was pretty much a case of, if you seen one fest, you've seen 'em all. (But then, I loved medieval castles. I would want to visit every one I saw. But my wife felt the same about castles as I felt about fests. Each to his own.)
I agree with Ben about not really being able to understand the scale, vibe, or what happens until you are there in person. I also went to visit my family in Munich and we went to the Oktoberfest. We went on the first Tuesday it was open and the cloudy weather kept a lot of people away, which was great for us because we could see everything, go on the rides and get food with no lines. But by Wed the sun was out and there was absolutely no room in the tents or even on the walkways outside! I loved it! The street food is the best! The quality is so much better than at any festivals or state fairs I've been to in the US. BTW, if you don't want the alcohol, they did offer a very tasty non-alcoholic beer, in the same glass. 🍺😉 Servus!
During the 13 years I lived in Germany I had the chance to go to not only Oktoberfest in Munich but also the Bad Canstatter Fest in Stuttgart several times. They are both a ton of fun.
Love this! I’ve not been to ocktoberfest yet but I’m an American that moved to cologne and had similar feelings to Ben the first time I went to Karneval
This video was perfect and 100% accurate. Just did Oktoberfest on Monday September 18 and had a great time! Did all of the major tents and Paulaner was our favorite! Hacker was also great. Great memories to take back to Texas. It is amazing to me that all of those “tents” come down after the fest. They are much more than tents but if you go to Google maps for Oktoberfest Munich, you’ll see a completely empty fairground. Pretty amazing! Really loved the community aspect. Everyone we talked with were so friendly. So much fun singing along (although I am certainly not a singer) to Country Road and Sweet Caroline! Everyone should go at some point in their life! Prost! 🍻😊
I also experience my first Oktoberfest this year as well while living in Munich. The thing I just realized is that my experience at fair and fest grounds in the US is that there is an entrance fee and all the rides and good is an additional charge. We have been to several dults and now Oktoberfest and there is no charge for entrance. It’s fantastic.
I didn't realize there was so much to do at Oktoberfest! All those places in the beginning of the video makes it look like a huge exhibition! That's nice that people have to share a table at Oktoberfest. Would make it less awkward for someone if they went to the festival alone and wasn't sure how to approach people. That's good that they had vegetarian and vegan food. Normally during mosaic I don't bother going to the food part of the German Club, but if there were vegetarian or vegan options for the food, I'd be more likely to check out the food more often.
I was in Switzerland for work with a coworker in September 2017 and our flights back to New York from Zurich were on Sunday morning. We finished up on Friday and drove from Biel Switzerland to Memmingen Germany where we were able to get a hotel on short notice. We caught an early train into Munich and were in the Hofbrau tent by 10:15 Saturday morning. We didn't leave until 21:30 and it was great. Luckily we got an open spot at a table only about 40 m from the stage and were joined by a group of local Munich young people. Both of us were "old" (47 and 50), and we had a great time with them. I am fairly short and didn't want to get lost in the crowd trying to get to the toilet so I held it until we left at 21:30. That is an impressive feat after 5 liters! We were back to our hotel in Memmingen around midnight then on the road to Zurich by 5:30. The whole experience was fantastic and I hope to return and enjoy more than one long day of singing in one tent.
I remember reading somewhere that Oktoberfest in Munich is the largest annual fair in the world. It looks like a super fun place! I don't even have a bucket list, but I am putting it on mine now! 😁

Love your joint Instagram account, by the way! :)
at the end of your great video, you show all the happiness and singing in the tent, and as you scan your camera, a few are on their phones. SAD they missed the fun and the German Experience. We can't wait to get there in 2024.
I went back in 2017 with about 20 friends from around the US. We had a blast. I would love to go back some day. A few of us also went to the fest in Stuttgart that week. It was smaller and more personal. We enjoyed it equally.
Ben, you can find almost all of those big temporary/portable rides, including the roller coasters, at larger fairs in the USA. Especially larger state fairs, such as Texas or Minnesota State Fair, which are the largest. In Kentucky, you'll probably only find those rides at Kentucky Kingdom (which also provides the rides and games for the Kentucky State Fair, a relatively small state fair). In the eastern half of America, in general the farther north you go, the larger the fairs are.
Wow great video! Thanks guys for bringing a taste of Oktoberfest to us people who have never experienced it. I always wonder how Feli feels when she gets on a plane to return to Cincinnati.
It's very comforting knowing there are Vegan options at Oktoberfest. My wife is very concerned about what I'm going to eat when we visit Deutschland since I've gone Vegan. I can now tell her confidently that we're covered.
Haven't fully watched this video yet - in the middle of it. I didn't went to oktoberfest but the one in Stuttgart, i was in Germany for work and was using the public transports every day and notice such a difference when the fair opened. On the other days my group (bunch of portuguese people) were the only ones doing noise (not much, we tried to be respectful) in the train, but during the fair, it was so noisy that it shocked me! I got to see the fun (and some reckless) side of the german people and the fair itself was a good experience - i don't drink beer but it has other drinks in some tends, which was nice for me and the vibe was really nice and surprising.
This was fun to watch! BTW, having a couple of drinks before going to an event like the Oktoberfest is called "vorglühen" in Germany. It's originally a technical term. Derives from "preheating" a car engine. Very popular among younger people with a smaller budget.
@@FelifromGermany Well, I have been in Munich on Father's day and that was almost as crowded as Oktoberfest. When I tell people here how they celebrate Father's day in Germany - well it is their day! I'm glad I saw your videos - I'll keep watching!
I've been to Oktoberfest 4 times, my first, 1971 and my last was 2009 I was in the US Army stationed in Boblingen Sindelfingen back then. So I love the Oktoberfest but my wife is 1 and done. So the apple didn't fall to far from the tree. I'm 5th generation German so maybe it's a DNA thing, what else could I be with a name like Kunk. The Oktoberfests in Ohio don't hold a candle to Munich. I live near Minster with the annual Octoberfest, not even close. When I tell them there like, right.. I was in Munich in 2021 in early June with 5 of my 10 siblings and husband and wives and they loved it had a lot of fun at the Hofbrau Haus. One of my favorite cities in the world Munich!
Props to you guys! Ben did not look like an idiot wearing a costume but in fact like the real deal! Rare for foreigners and Germans not from bavaria alike!
I was at Octoberfest one day in the mid 1990s. I don't remember which beer tent we were in but we were sitting at a table with an International selection of people. My wife and I were American, there were a couple of Italians, an Australian, and several other people from other places I don't remember off hand. There is one thing I remember that was interesting and would have been a scandal at any American event. Outside of the back of the beer tent was a grassy hill and as the day wore on more and more people were laying on the hill sleeping off there beer. No one was hurt by it and they all woke up and continued with their day, but in the U.S. a bunch of "passed out drunks" would have caused an uproar.
FYI Feli, how you check the locking system with a button is you take the time before closing the door in the following way. With the door open where you can reach both sides of the doorknob, press in the button and then try turning the outside doorknob. It should be locked & not move, so then you can close the door and not be worried someone will walk in on you.
But the most beautiful funfair is still the *_Soester Allerheiligenkirmes_* (Soest All Saints' Funfair): 😘 More fairground attractions than at the Oktoberfest, similar number of visitors per day, ... - and all this _within_ the ancient city walls of the beautiful medieval town of *Soest* (Westphalia). 👉 The biggest (greatest!) old town center funfair in the world! Tip: When the funfair closes (at 02:00 at night) the partying continues in the many cozy pubs! 😁 BTW: This year it starts on November 2nd!
Thank You for the Octoberfest video. It reminds me of my time in Germany when I was in the United States Airforce in the early 1990's. Although I did not go to Octoberfest, I enjoyed saxonhausen in Frankfort many nights while I was there. My favorite beer was the hefe veits or the dunkel veits. We also took a tour to Barvaria, we saw the glockenspiel, and visited a church that supposedly had the devils footprint in concrete (it was not what we expected), and we visited Neushwanstein castle it was beautiful. I took many pictures including one from the bridge between the two mountain peaks. I would love to go back someday and take my wife and kids. Again thank you for helping me to relive these memories. I'm sure I've spelled many of these words wrong and to that I apologize.

True, she is perfect

Are you a Nazi also?

@@holger_p The original German beer mugs were made of stoneware ceramics--"Steinware"--so that's where Americans got the term from.

It was always just like vinegar and oils and was usually warm as well. Was the best
My grandmother was raised and born in ulm
As barfuss already asked, where did your grandmother come from? As far as I know there is one big difference between potato salads in Germany or the german speaking countries. With or without mayonnaise. My grandma was born in Silesia, so my favorite potato salad is with mayonnaise, bacon, coocked egg and pickles. But in the southern regions like Bavaria and Austria that is very uncommon.
German potato salad is the best. When it's made correctly. If it's made incorrectly it can sometimes taste like a wet dirty sock.

Ben ist eine echte Schnitte im Trachtengewand 😁
Thanks for such an informative video! I think bringing Ben in has been a great addition to the channel! Love that he is a fellow Bengals fan too
One of your best, Feli! Really a joy to watch.
I hope you two are romantically involved.. The way you look at each other is captivating!
I am working for a Produktion Company in Hamburg since 35 Years, I am impressed. Well done!
I absolutely love the Octoberfest short you did. I can't stop playing it.
I am moving to Munich from the US next year right as Oktoberfest kicks off. To say I am excited is an understatment
The half meter bratwurst is one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life
This year was my first time going to Oktoberfest. I was there the week of 26 September. It was one of the very best times I have ever had and absolutely intend on going back. It's the largest "keg party" I've ever been to and it was nothing but a great time.
Ihr seid ein echt sympathisches Pärchen!
Please give us more videos like this of you guys doing stuff together. There's only so many US-Germany differences videos we need. lol
They are both a ton of fun.
all the best from Stuttgart to you!! :-)
4:00 The Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas has a very realistic sky in their Biergarten, I love it.

Boy, Ben, you looked so amazing in your Janker and Lederhosen!
I've never been to Oktoberfest, but this video really makes me want to! Thanks!
A München Girl Ja! No cold weather will keep a warm hearted person from beer and friends. And meeting new friends. 🍻
Wow. That young lady was carrying, what, 17 heavy mugs of beer! How does she do that?

It sounds wonderful sharing and chatting with strangers at the tables.

There are a lot of people with German ancestry in Wisconsin, so there is that.
Hit is hit, whether in German or another language!
Okay, this is a new bucket list thing to do. That looks like such a great time.

The hill you mean is called „Kotzhügel“ like puke hill by munich people
An amazing video for our very troubled times. Thanks for sharing your experience and all that fun.
FYI
Feli, how you check the locking system with a button is you take the time before closing the door in the following way.
With the door open where you can reach both sides of the doorknob, press in the button and then try turning the outside doorknob. It should be locked & not move, so then you can close the door and not be worried someone will walk in on you.
I’m so glad I subbed. And that you had fun and shared it with us.
Always great to see pictures of the Bavarian Seppelorgie.

But the most beautiful funfair is still the *_Soester Allerheiligenkirmes_* (Soest All Saints' Funfair): 😘
More fairground attractions than at the Oktoberfest, similar number of visitors per day, ...
BTW: This year it starts on November 2nd!

$15-16 for a litre of beer is actually pretty good. Especially when you add in the atmosphere you get to enjoy it in.
Yes, a tent like that is expensive!
Great video and Ben is good guy happy for you both.
Love to hear Americans say "Lederhosen". It sounds so cute.
