They couldn’t afford insulation and used plywood to try and block the cold.
Maybe, but I've recently learned that wood has a low R value - so it shouldn't affect the house too much if all the windows and doorways are sealed.
I agree. I think the most important thing to do would be to insulate, insulate,insulate.
What if flooring for the walls kept moisture down? Kind of makes sense being on the water and heavy winters tracking snow in and out and not wanting the stairs and walls to get ruined by moisture. Hmmm I don't know but can't help but think there was a reason for it.
I was thinking it was probably drafty as all get out and they just put those boards over everything to block the wind.
This is what I am guessing as well.
As an older viewer I would suggest a runner on the stairs. Stairs are slippery and it’s very easy to slip down them. I know, it happened to me.
Me too, only missed 3 stairs, but twisted my tailbone in the fall. Still painful 4 years later.
I have slipped more on carpeted stairs than wood ones
I was thinking about this as well. Some sort of tread strip may help as well.

Their house is cute but not great for aging in place. Though I suppose it could be added on to etc. A bed and bath on the main level of a house is important to me.
That was probably an attempt to " modernize" the space. Its going to look great! I love the original beadboard.

Hope you're adding some insulation. They're right on the ocean. I bet a lot of cold air comes in those old walls.

@@madzabinga8382 But they're not having to purchase bead board now, so could use some of that money and do things the "right" way. Don't just put "Lipstick on a pig."
What if you cut the side off by a couple of inches of the island cabinet and put castors under it. That way it'll fit where you want it and could be easily moved.

Even though the staircase has plumbing under it make it the pantry with removable shelving just in case. A nice door and instant storage.

Why oh why would someone cover up beadboard? What a bonus find and money saver on the budget. This is certainly going to brighten up the space. Philip's parents are going to be so excited.

Just wanted to share my bee story. After watching the video where you brought the Bees home RUclips kept throwing bee keeping videos at me. Understandable, that's how it works. But then I met a lady and invited her around for coffee and she brought her husband. He enjoyed looking around my garden and asked if I kept bees. I told him I didn't and he went on to say it would be good for me to do that and even suggested a spot for the hive! Then today a lady came doing the national census and one of the questions was do I keep bees!? I was beginning to wonder if I should but after watching the first minute of this video I decided against it. 😂

Before you repaint the exterior, try powerwashing it! Just to see how it looks without the aged gray.

You can make hanging plant holders out of those old satellite dish items and you can also make swings out of them, a lot of people in a modern world don't like beadboard which I do but some people get overwhelmed by it so that's probably why they put that other product over it or maybe it was just to create a more warmer space, also maybe you could use some of that board you're taking off and your other little house you haven't worked on yet

The entry looks absolutely amazing without all the colors and patterns everywhere. That alone goes a long way to making the downstairs into something that mom and dad will enjoy for many years to come.

Love the ship"s wheel you found in the shed. IDEA: put hat hooks below the hand grips .Great forr caps,hats etc.
Also put an open cabinet or shelf where the break in the beadboard for baskets for gloves,scarves snd winter caps.
Maybe Consider putting the upper cabinet as a lower cabinet under the stairs instead of the island an cut planks to turn it in to a counter?

You don’t have enough room in your hives for all the bees, that’s why they’re swarming
Add a box to each of your hives before the other swarms
Bees are so unpredictable! Everything can be exactly right. Temps, room, humidity, etc, and they will up and swarm. I think some people going into beekeeping have unrealistic ideals about how it works out. It's way more than jars of honey .
Hope you add insulation.

This is going to be such a spectacular mini reno. Is there beadboard behind the plywood walls in the kitchen and living room too? Wouldn't that be crazy beautiful. A big mirror or picture or cubbies could hide that beadboard patch in the entryway above where the bench is going. Extra storage is always a good thing. I have no thoughts as to why they covered everything with the plywood. So weird. It really makes me wonder what is behind the kitchen and living room walls. Can't wait to see the reveal.

Just a thought……how is the insulation behind the ship lap? Perhaps the flooring and plywood created a barrier against drafts in an old house. I would check the insulation throughout, and also install sound absorbing on the floor in the upper rooms. Being as close as the cottage is to the shore and its 26:38 location in Nova Scotia could be dreadful in the cold winter months, especially since they heat with wood.

They didn't like the 'old fashioned' look of the headboard and were trying to make it smooth and modern with the plywood.
They may have put it up because they liked the wood panel solid look. they did not like the bead board, some people do not. It was a cheap solution at one time. People use to do that then paint it a solid color. I prefer the bead board it is so cottage and country. Amazing it is not damaged as far as I can see. Just trim it out you got it. A good coat or two of paint will look spectacular. Love the ceilings have it too. Can not wait until the next one. Suspense. Love the color of the bench. Peace!

Maybe the ceiling and walls are not insulated . The plywood might be keeping the wind out . I hope I’m wrong as I love the shiplap. Put the freezer under the stair nook

OMG! That plywood is so tacky!! You did the right thing!! A little hint - that seat with the bad leg - can it be fixed or just put a 2x4on the wall and turn the seat around so the back will rest on the 2x4. Idid this for a good friend and she loves it!!

It's great that you found all that bead board. I think they may have tried to block out the cold winter wind. Definitely replace the bead board wall where you're going place the bench, it looks awful! You're going need lots of caulk to seal up!😊

I know in some older homes by the waterfront you'll find plywood I'm not sure but I think it was for insulation and not wanting to destroy the bead board or other walls They might not have known about blowing insulation down through the walls

What a wonderful surprise under that flooring and plywood!!! I've inherited my parents 200 year old home and have removed the square ceiling tiles in the porch to reveal the bead board ceiling. This room was two room made into one so there's a section in the ceiling where there's no bead board so I'm going to put in a faux ceiling beam.
