I’ve watched a few reactions to this song and I’ve seen a few grown men break down in tears. Marko is a vocal and lyrical genius.
The Islander and While your lips are still red from Nightwish. Marco sings those.
Also Master Passion Greed is one of my favourites. Heavy though.

Marco's dad was a teacher who also played guitar and he used to sing lullabies to Marco and his brother Sakari often when they were young and going to bed. That is something Marco remembers so well. And when he got his own twin boys he also used to sing them lullabies every time when he was home. In this song he kinda wishes that when his boys someday will get their own children they would sing to them as well. Another vote for "Nightwish - High Hopes". I am a huge Pink Floyd fan and first watched that video with skepticism. "How can anyone cover High Hopes and do it justice??" Well Marco delivered.
As a Finn i can relate to this song so deeply, since it is about father, fathers and our ancestors... The chills this gives me is so deep chills it freezes the air around me.
I love Marko! You need to listen to High Hopes a cover song Nightwish did of a Pink Floyd song. Do the one from The End of an Era show, you will not be disappointed! I really love this song. Great reaction!

He's a beautiful singer.
Marko is amazing, he has insane vocal range and various styles he can sing perfectly. He has been the main vocalist of a metal band Tarot since the early 80s, so don't go underestimating him as a singer ;P... tbh he is a lot more experienced singer than even Floor.
This song is very deep and personal. His father used to play guitar and sing to Marko and his brother Zacharias (a guitarist in Tarot) at bed time, unfortunately he was also an alcoholic. Which is what Marko also became later in life.
Even though Marko has been sober since 2010, this song is about following (singing with his fathers voice) in his fathers footsteps in music and in alcoholism.
This is an example, of how talented the entire Nightwish crew are, of course everyone notices Floor (and rightfully so), but each member brings something unique, and thats why I love Nightwish. As you might know Tuomas writtes 95% of Nightwish songs, but its Marco that does the rest and as you can see he is also great at that..
Marco also sings in a band called Delain (not all songs, but many) and his voice really shines in their music. :)

Marko is an exceptional vocalist. He's just often overlooked because of the ladies on the stage. He sings the lead role on a few Nightwish songs. Check out The Islander (Tampere 2015) and While Your Lips Are Still Red (Wembly 2016) if you want to hear more from him.🤘👍💯
No worries, man, he got me too when I first heard it. He sings that high part so wonderfully and that's usually difficult for male vocalists.

People seem to be suggesting the Islander and While Your Lips Are Still Red, which are both very good Marco-centric songs, same with High Hopes. I would say that if you want a story, then Poet and the Pendulum has a heck of a story associated with it, but that one takes a bit of explanation, and some people think those who are new to NW should wait for a bit and experience their other pieces (especially with their first singer) before going for that one. It's a pretty widely known story in the NW community, so it's easy to find though.

Marco was already a legit and well respected musician even before he joined Nightwish. Just look on his Wiki page for proof. You'll plainly see he's played with a ton of bands since the mid 1990's and continued to do so even after joining Nightwish.
I really dig your reactions! Marko Hietala is an awesome singer. Yeah, Nightwish got two of those and no it's not fair. You should def check out The Islander live at Tampere 2015, While your lips are still red live at Wembley 2015 and also the amazing cover they did of Pink Floyd's High Hopes live at End of an Era. The last one blew me away, High Hopes has been one of my favorite songs of all time since forever and I was lucky enough to see it performed live during the Once tour in 2005. Honestly I think it's better than the original, just so much more powerful.

I'll explain it like this. Marco Hietala replaced Sami Vänskä as the bassist in Nightwish somewhere between their third and fourth studio album (out of eight they released so far). Originally, Tuomas Holopainen was composing and writing all their songs with a single female operatic vocal in mind. Marco was, however, both the lead vocal and bassist in the band Tarot. Tuomas started, with time, to incorporate the fact that his new bassist is amazing vocalist as well. Especially once Anette replaced Tarja as the lead vocal. He knew Tarja since high school and became much more willing to allow other people to do some singing once she was no longer in the band. Marco was also one of four male vocals in Northern Kings (four vocals from different Finnish metal bands singing metal covers of pop songs).

Apparently Marco wrote a book. In it he writes that he once had a small lump on a vocal cord and had it operated. But they made a mistake and it got damaged. After that he had trouble controlling it. So not the tone came out that he had in mind. It was very difficult for him to deal. Now it slowly became better.

Check out "Our Decades in the Sun" from "Endless Forms Most beautiful". Floor sings this one. It is about the bands parents. Very touching. They claim to be unable to perform this one live. Too emotional!
After that check out "The Greatest Show on Earth", live of course at Tampere. It is the Epic Masterpiece. 6.4 billion years of Universe and Earth history in 20 minutes.

Hello, thank you for this reaction! You should definately check out his own band called Tarot. Tarot is my second favourite band after Nightwish. Guitarist - Zachary Hietala is Marko's brother. Keyboard/samples player is Tommi "Tuple" Salmela, he is really good singer as well. Main keyboards - Janne Tolsa, drummer - Pecu Cinnari (unfortunately he passed away in 2016).
"Tides" (live DVD Undead Indeed) is my second favourite from the band. The 1st one is "Gone" from their last album Gravity of Light 2010. Could you do reaction to them? They have a lot of good stuff. And "Wings of Darkness" is iconic, best known song of Tarot, i think.

Marko Hietala is also part of Finnish production Raskasta Joulua, what is translated to Heavy Christmas at English. You should listen those too, yes Christmas carols 😂 but once you hear those, original Xmas songs are so boring from since. Floor has been singing at Raskasta Joulua too, you should hear them singing Ave Maria. You might think that it’s not very heavy or metal, but you’ll love it. In that production is also many great Finnish metal singers like Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica. And of course Marko and Tony is part of the Northern Kings with Jarkko Ahola and JP Leppäluoto, who also sings in Raskasta Joulua. And that leading guitarist in that production, Erkka Korhonen, is amazing. Elize Ryd from Amaranthe is in that group too. So I suggest that you have Christmas season soon! 😄

Thank you for listening the Finnish version even though he made an english verison of the album. I'm not being bias since I've listened to both of the records, both Finnish and English and well... the Finnish one just has more umpfh, and I am NOT being bias. You can hear the difference between his Finnish and english songs. Both are good, yes, but the Finnnish ones have more soul. Although, can you really blame him about it? EDIT: No but for real, how you reacted at about 5:28? It just... I cannot even describe it. You just KNOW. Marco's voice should be on the Unesco world heritage list, and I've told him this. He went silent and hugged me SO thight and told me that it was one of the biggest compliments he's ever got. SQUEEEEEEE
You just gotta watch The Islander from Wembley. It's just so... cool. Best way to put it. 😎

You really should listen to the whole album from Marko. There’s some classic ‘60s psychedelic feelings and I swear 1990s David Gilmour from Pink Floyd (think Momentary Lapse of Reason album) could have played some of the solos ❤️
That makes me think - Check out Nightwish covering High Hopes from End of an Era. It’s a Pink Floyd song about high hopes that were never realized and it was the last song of the last concert before they fired their first singer, Tarja, in an open letter. Marko absolutely SLAYED it and it will rip your heart out.

Marco has promised to release his solo album also with English lyrics later this year. This a song dedicated to his father who used to sing to Marco & his brother Zachary almost every night when they were children. For more Marco, but in English, you could also check his own heavy metal band "Tarot" that he's had since 1982 with his brother Zachary in lead guitar. Just started to watch your reactions and I liked them! You seem to have great taste of music. 😊 If you like Marco’s voice, you should check out couple finnish Christmas songs that he and other finnish metal singers has done! Etc Tulkoon joulu (finnish version) and english version Christmas has come is awesome. Maybe a Christmas special. 😉 In Finland there are lot’s of great metal bands (Amorphis, Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica), it’s like in our breastmilk or something. 😄
