You could compare the English version to Marco's Finnish version Isäni ääni. Then you can see Marco and then band clearly in the video. The Finnish language gives the song an another twist.

Thanks for this one, Thomas. What a beautiful song. This one hits hard. His voice carries the emotion much like Floor's does. May be part of why they sound so good together. I think his accent on certain vowels might be because of his Finnish accent - you can hear some of the same inflections when he speaks. I can't imagine what Nightwish will be like without him - he's such an integral part of the band/family.

    Thank you for this, Thomas.
I got the tissues ready as soon as I saw the title on the notification, and yes, I needed them.
I think this is a stunningly good piece, and it is emotional anyway, and all the more so now.
Marco's clean vocals are amazing, and although I don't mind the occasional growl, I've never been a fan of continuous strong distortion, so this is to me, his greatest personal piece.
I am hoping that the "couple of things he agreed on that he will do in 2021" will include the virtual concert in March, so that we will all have a chance to say our own Au-Revoir and wish him well, and that after a rest and some time with family and close friends he will be back as good as ever in 2022 or 2023, But I don't feel there should be any pressure on him, even if his voice is irreplaceable - his own health and wellbeing are far more so! I hope he finds his Walden without more hurt on the path.
And I hope his very targetted attack on those leeches that sponge from musicians, fans, and other artists sparks a change, or assists in one (it has been going on among smaller bands and artists for years), and that those parasites will lose their "investments" as they deserve.
Maybe we should start by boycotting Ticketmaster, and writing to venues and our favourite bands to say we will only book direct with venues until those bloodsuckers are destroyed. Buy albums or stream only from bands own websites.
Bass and his contribution on guitar can be stood in for, but his singing range and ability to blend voices with Floor will be exceptionally hard to find anyone for, even though Floor can blend with anyone she chooses; his voice is very special.
I think he will be most missed in the writing process though - he was always the first person that Tuomas brought his compositions to, to fine-tune them and create demo recordings for the rest of the band to then build on, as he was able to contribute drumming, guitars bass, vocals and most of all his own songwriting skills and wisdom to the process.
So I now worry about Tuomas and how he will cope.
I only hope that the Nightwish family is strong enough to manage without him, at least for a while, and stay good friends to him while keeping it outside dangerous music industry territory during his hiatus.

Hi Phil! Thank you for writing this and sharing your thoughts - well said!
I 100% agree that his health and happiness is the ultimate priority here. After what he's given the world, he deserves to retire and never lift a finger again unless he wants to. If he's in a good state in a year or two and he misses making/performing music, he can return and we will all rejoice haha.
Like you say, he seemed somewhat optimistic in his letter so hopefully he can make the virtual concert.
It definitely raises some big questions over how artists are treated by these companies. Hopefully it can light a fire and shine some light on this. It's easy to forget as a regular consumer but I do feel like I want to do more to directly support artists.

@@ThomFoolery1 I'm rather limited in my resources, but I managed to quit smoking (after 40 years) to contribute to a great young band producing an album, then several more followed by their own recording studio (in Canada), and have gone on to support a number of other small, independent artists from Indonesia (helped with a home studio and album), Costa Rica, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, The Netherlands and the US (and another studio, this time in Romania, where Iasi seems to be a hotbed of talent). All from the money I've saved over 4 years from quitting smoking.
It isn't much (I'm disabled and for the time being, effectively housebound - I can't get help to fix accessibility during the pandemic - so I'm only one step above homeless in means [and yes, I've been there a few times in my life, too]), but if enough people do it, it can make a huge difference and help undermine what Pink Floyd famously called The Machine.
From your end, maybe a little promotion of such bands say, on one video a week (Wildcard Wednesday, Freelance Friday or something), would help. I'm gaining quite a few contacts among independent artists, so can make suggestions if you'd be interested in that.

The NW bunch are so close knit, I can't see this retirement lasting for too long. Marko has some things to work out, but he has too much music in him to stay sidelined forever. He may be gone for a year or two, but I can see him creating a new way for musicians to get their just due from the corporations and coming back in triumph.

Exactly. That is essential message of this song, passing music from generation to generation. Marko's Father, Marko, Marko's sons, twins, they are 18 or 19 now. Miro plays the drums. Marko, Miro and Marko's big brother Zachary (officially Sakari) on guitar have a band called "All Hietala Power Trio". They play Black Sabbath covers, I do not know what else possibly.

Marko has a soft and emotional depth within his soul. Almost 40 years dealing with the toxic music industry. When business takes over art, art is destroyed by the greed and flesh peddling. The suits get rich on other peoples talents and that can crush an artists spirit. To save our artistic freedom, something must change. If not we will be stuck with corporate crap and over produced pop tunes with no soul and created by industry producers. The era of real bands making great inspirational compositions from their hearts and souls is coming to an end. This is the reasons that inspiration and validation is not forthcoming. 😞😞😞

    Hello Thomas
This video should also make it clear to the last one that Marko is not just the male vocal part next to Floor Jansen at NW. To compete alongside such a singer, you have to be an exceptional singer yourself. In the past Marko has proven this often enough with NW. I will only mention two examples: “Phantom of the Opera” and “Ave Maria”. Otherwise there would certainly not have been guest appearances with other bands.
Another nice fact by the way. I don't know if the show "The Masked Singer" is known in Canada. In the Finnish edition, Marko won the second season in autumn 2020. He shows his versatility as a singer throughout the season. None of the advice team suspected that Marko was behind the mask.
    Greetings from Germany

Hey there, thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is very true, Marko really is incredible and I've always seen him as more of a backing singer. He brings so much depth and range to the table with NW. It's hard to imagine anyone else taking his place.
Some other folks mentioned "The Masked Singer" show, I still need to check out his performances. Surprising that no one guessed it was him but like you say, it proves his versatility. Hopefully he takes the time he needs and we can see him again soon. :)

I think that Markos thoughts is shared in the band but that others still have the focus that they want to play their music and is not as focused on the ethical side, atleast not in the same details.

If Marco was in a state of depression while making his decision, chances are he might find his way back to Nightwish one day after all. There was a lot of anger in the letter, which is also significantly related to depression. His decision would still be carefully considered, because in a depression you do nothing but think. So sorry for your loss! When my Dad passed, I took the greatest comfort from music and things like this. Take care of yourself.

Somehow it’s a bit difficult for me to hear and see Marko at the moment. I think it’s so sad knowing that clearly his passion is singing and his music and being at this moment in his life. That must be devastating for him. I really hope he will overcome this and on the hand that Nightwish will continue making great music as well.

Yes, a terrible loss. Without disparaging all you four-string wizards, a bass player can usually be replaced (unless you're Derek Forbes of Simple Minds or, arguably, Peter Hook of New Order). However, Marko's singing voice in all its incarnations from devilish to tender is unique - not very unique (sic) but literally unique, meaning there is no other like it. I will also miss the grizzled presence and the scary sideways stares.
Frankly, I don't know whether the band can survive this. Hope they will, but how are they going to perform songs such as Ghost River, Ever Dream, I Want My Tears Back or Song of Myself from now on? Maybe they won't.

Well said! It's definitely tough to imagine finding anyone that can sing anything close to what Marko is capable of. Even the best singer could likely not replicate that Marko tone or feeling that is hard to describe.

Like you said, they probably won’t. It’ll be hard I would think on them all , for a while anyway.
