This genre should be called "Electronic Pirate Jams". I would have never heard this style of music outside Nintendo and Sega games if I wasnt a broke ass kid growing up.
Well, as you noticed yourself, this music was not exclusively featured in keygens although acquiring a lot of attention due to such, therefore "X-Bit" with X representing 8, 16, or whatever, is more fitting. But same story here, I heard them more often in keygens than anything else.
