It's understandable to have missed this a bit; news & info media were behind the times back then, & usually either misunderstood, mis-portrayed, or altogether didn't know about or ignored a LOT of internet behavior & culture at the time. & naturally, this stuff started having to try to be on the down-low eventually, so it was often secretive by design. So, it wasn't acknowledged much except in the private sector (which was MUCH more separate from the public/news sector back then) until retrospectively, & by then internet piracy was dropping due to the convenience of streaming becoming widely available.
So, most actually in-the-know sources tended to be kind of underground, hush-hush... & then there's the fact that SO many old websites are gone forever, in whole or in part, due to so many web services ending, as Social Media & algorithms took over. Even web archives are incomplete, missing aspects & subpages. It's a shame, so much history, lost forever, once those of us who formed it can no longer pass our tales down... (which is why I'm randomly rambling about it now. I have no kids, so future readers, ur my babby now, be my legacy! 😜)
In the 90s, it was untamed frontier. You could go to plain ol' search engines like AltaVista or HotBot, & for a time they literally had filters for FILE TYPES that you could search for. Song name/artist, click on Type: MP3, hit Search... Bam, music! And of course, free web hosts with built-in editors to make your own websites, often so garishly colored & full of animated gifs & midi or mp2 audio (not a typo) playing in the background... though it often took 15 minutes to load if it was the latter... Anime/game fan-sites galore! (Just a couple random examples of how crazily FREE we were for a glorious little while...!)
But then yeah, RIAA, Napster, Google & Google Video, RUclips, bla bla bla. And in response: Cracks & Keygens. With so much love & personal touch put into them, too! Helped you trust them, since that was always a worry for your computer's safety. But when they had a nickname & reputation, you knew it was all good. 😄
So these tunes are so nostalgic, reminding me of when we had each others' backs, sharing (a sacred human bonding experience, showing that you care & are cared about), & thanks to the artwork on the UI, ASCII art & personal wording in the ReadMe file, & kickin' rad tunes, you got a glimpse into the personality of the person who's letting you have this gift.
It's an emotional connection with no real equivalent nowadays, even if you still found such files (in some ways now, easier, in other ways, harder & higher risk). You'd have to have been there back then, under the oppressive atmosphere of our free skies growing cloudy & dark, to truly know what a risky, rebellious, yet warming light these keygen songs signified for us. 🥲But the second best thing, is to imagine it, with grateful "I got a gift!" excitement, but at the same time, net-rebel, iz-this-the-D4rk-W3b?, original-Matrix vibes in your soul while you listen. 🥰😎

This song hits me right in the feels with an uppercut of nostalgia. Brings me back to 2008/2009 when I was a broke student hunting for good sony vegas torrents. I won't go into details, but Sony Vegas was definitely a part of my childhood. Owning the cracked version ultimately led to bigger and better things. I can now say that since 2012 I am the proud owner of a legal version :) I still come back here from time to time to reminisce about those old times, when the internet was still young and free, facebook was brand new and instagram didn't yet exist.

Pulled my old rig out of storage to try and restore/resto-mod it and got it booted before I started to dismantle it, I loved this song so much back when I was making videos for shits with friends that I had it play on startup, man was it a nostalgia trip to hear it again.
