Aviators - Black Holes (Portal 2 Song)

- Portal 2 is just an awesome game, and for some reason I felt like writing a song about one of its most interesting characters, Wheatley. He's good turned bad, and I always like writing songs about conflicted villains.
This is also the first single from From Oceans to Skies!

Lyrics:
I'd like to carve a hole
In my all-seeing eye
Then resurrect myself
Years after my demise
I'll be the blade that cuts
The cables from your head
Fear nothing, but embrace
The drive you feel instead
I'd like to reconcile
The conflicts in my heart
These broken lights inside
Are tearing me apart
An iron mind commands
The deeds I have to do
Black holes inside my soul
Are pulling me from you
Somewhere inside this place
You're with her, unamused
By my mistakes, the aches
Of having you to use
It's just a test, not a game
But here you've reached the end
I'm told to kill you
Though you were my only friend
Paradise
Means sacrifice
Paradise
Means ending life
I'd like to help you
I'd like to hurt you
I'd like to save you
I'd like to hurt you
"I'd say, "I'm sorry." Sincerely. I am sorry - I was bossy... and monstrous... And, I am genuinely sorry. The end."
What??
@@KEPKA.2731 Wheatley says after you beat the game. I think its a post credits thing maybe?
SPAAAAACEEE
I can hear this quote
And not just because im stuck in space
Step 1: listen to this song.
Step 2: feel sorry for Wheatley.
Step 3: don't cry.
Step 4: realize there won't be another portal game.
Step 5: cry a lot.
Hola
@Westley Kairo Are you just a bot made to spread some scam aplication whenever anyone mentions Portal?
@@majklavzar9057 I bet Kaysen's a bot, too. Made to respond to it to look more organic.
@@Null_sys I believe I can confirm this
> Lie down
> Try not to cry
> Cry a lot
At the end of Portal 2, as Wheatley flies off into space, he yells “GRAB ME GRAB ME GRAB ME”.
This is actually a callback to much earlier in the game, when he first detaches from his management rail.
Y’know…when you were still friends.
He actually says CATCH ME CATCH ME CATCH ME in the First chapter, so It could be a reference in chapter 5 when he yells PULL ME OUT PULL ME OUT PULL ME OUT and LEAVE ME IN LEAVE ME IN
Oh my God you're right!
And you didn’t catch him (you can’t) and he brings it up when he goes off the rails and punches you into the pit
@@NiennaFan1 you can catch wheatley on your head but that's about it, you can't grab him until he hits the floor
Ow. Why do you hurt me? 😢
"An iron mind commands the deeds I have to do." This part in particular is pretty on point. Notice that both Wheatley and GLaDOS's actions as villains happen when they're connected to the mainframe. As soon as you disconnect GLaDOS, she starts becoming a more sympathetic character. As soon as you plug Wheatley in, he starts going mad. Then, once you unplug Wheatley again, he becomes remorseful and sympathetic again, although it's too late to save him. It would seem that neither GLaDOS or Wheatley are inherently evil, but that they are influenced by a flaw in the design of the mainframe. GLaDOS less so because she was designed to be linked to it, but still not immune on account of her digital AI being based on a brain scan of Caroline, a human being.
Unfortunately, there's probably no fixing it either. GLaDOS killed everyone with the know how to fix any unintended side effects of the design, and seems completely incapable or uninterested in fixing it herself. She's actively aware of it, she makes as much clear during the events of the game, yet never actually does anything about it.
when you look at his face, all you see is
his metal shell, all the rust covering it and his glowing blue eye. although we can't see it, he's doing something in that picture.
he's crying
Oh no
That's... True...
It’s amazing how much emotion a picture of a metal ball can express
"If you're dying, but not dead, stomp once. If you're dead, obviously no stomps. And two stomps if you're not dead."
"Y'know, I would tell you if I was dead. Alright that is common courtesy. Mark of a civil society. So just...just let me know!"
"O.K. I'm figuring that's probably long enough...Are you dead yet?......How about now?"
How did you-nevermind, I think I know how you quoted me; A fourth wall being broken.
Wheatley Pendleton Wheatley? Back from space?
@@thewestwind_ Yeah, why not?
i tried stomping lol
"I'm not dead yet!"
Man, Aviators really just woke up one morning and went “Hmm. I think today I will make all of the Wheatley fans cry.” And he succeeded.
Ow.
This song is amazing, it’s such a great take on his character.
I just wanna clarify something here (even though I am 4 years late)
A lot of people think that Wheatley just turned evil because of his power or something, but I think it is because the Mainframe he was connected to (And so was GlaDOS before him) was made to test, test, and test even more.
So as he got connected, he kinda got corrupted by the Mainframe and went crazy. (That would also explain "The Itch" he was talking about.)
So it is actually a pretty sad story about a good guy who got corrupted.
I miss Wheatley.
FlapoorGaming NL Basically, he was overpowered. GlaDOS’ body was only built for her and certain cores. It wasn’t for wheatley, so he was corrupted.
@@booger1977 Exactly :D
I am a year late, but I would like to give my piece of mind on this: Wheatley did not get corrupted. Aside from the Itch to test, the mainframe provided Wheatley with nothing more but power. But this power-trip and obsession are not the primary reason he's turned on Chell and refused to leave alongside her.
As GLaDOS said, Wheatley was deliberately designed to slow her-the mainframe, and consequently all of Aperture-down by making the worst possible choices. When he got plugged into the mainframe, he simply continued to follow his programming. What was the worst possible choice he could make in his position? Anger the one person he knows is capable of destroying the mainframe. Shut down all safety systems and perpetuate the facility's destruction.
Of course he was sorry at the end. Once rendered incapable of making any decisions that could affect the mainframe or Aperture itself, he was free to consciously think about his actions in accordance with his underlying personality. Though remorseful, he'd very likely do the same things again if given the chance. After all, he can't help it. It's in his nature.
also, this could explan why glados was so nice after being disconnected, and actually looked to chell for help
@@pilzening2810 holy shit. That’s... spot on. I’m... here’s a potato for a job well done. 🥔
“I’m told to kill you though, you were my only friend” that just broke my heart...
The line "black holes inside my soul are pulling me from you" resonates with me so much - it captures the feeling of helplessness to do anything about your bad qualities, and you see that they're ruining everything but you feel like you can't do anything. (You can, of course, but many people are too weak to try. I know I am.)
I've felt the same, don't let your well being be determined by the world around you, being self sufficient is essential in all areas possible
get up and do what you need to do in life and that will kick start you, so whatever gets you going, do that and immediately use that momentum to get shit done
thanks!@@sabishivivalakitten3918
I can't imagine this song having not existed before June 11th...
It's one of those songs that just fits naturally into your memory, and after listening you can't imagine the tune not having been there before you listened.
+James Tisajokt Kinda like the Portal series. You can't remember that feeling you had when that Portal first opened.
Damn bro that's how I feel a lot of times
If only Wheatley knew what half of this whole song meant... lol... But really, I LOVE the Portal series, and Wheatley was (and still is) one of my favorite characters in the whole Portal series, and this song just makes my love for Portal grow even more.
I COMPLETELY agree with you! Portal is AWESOME, and Wheatley is the best character! 😄
Late as can be, but my observation. All the characters are great and I love them. But there’s realy only three to my memory, glados, cave Johnson, and Wheatley. Assuming you don’t count broken ai cores and insane mutes
@@Shadow-swordyou mean the one dangerous mute lunatic
@@Shadow-sword there are turrets, including the oracle turret. And Doug Rattman. And also all the alternate Cave Johnsons and other characters from the multiverse testing initiative, like Cave's assistant (I think his name was Greg?), and the creepy kid of said assistant. You could also count the Companion Cube.
The opening is SO Portal-y tho, at first i thought it was ripped right from the game 80
A+ 10/10 would listen again
Would? More like DID!!!
Yes, and with the beat, you can hear a weighted plate being unpressed
This makes me feel so sad for poor ol' Wheatley. It wasn't his fault, the system made him crazy because he wasn't designed for GLaDOS's body.
I still think he'll be in Portal 3.
Yume your so right I think so to
Yume theres no portal 3 and we all know that ;-;
The true reason why I went corrupt is power-corruption. I had too much power given to me at one moment, and I practically went insane with it. I really AM a moron, aren't I?
I blame GLaDOS
+lildroid At this point it is possible that another company will show interest in making a third (just look at the Lego portal and bridge constructor)
I love how this song is clearly about Portal 2 and yet nothing in the song lyrics overtly mentions it. Some beautiful writing right there!

Dear Aviators,
Years.... years you have been making music and you probably will for years further. I am just a simple fan who listens to music but i realized something common in all of your music. the comments... Your music is so different every time but the comments just do not change. how many people who have listened, who still listen, and are inspired to make more, just because you wrote a song. I am not saying you have to, i'm pointing out how many lives you've affected, how many you've changed. Did you even realize your impact? like a meteor crashing through the atmosphere you left a crater that will not soon be filled. You were just being you, making songs based on you're interests and your personal perspective on the world. your opinion not opened up the soul of the listener, but the creativity of them too. Thank you, i guess is what i'm trying to say here tho i doubt you will read this so as fruitless as it is, i feel i had to say this. Thank you Aviators for being... You. And let nothing change who you are.

Wheatley's picture sure looks happy for a deep song.
That's because he always looks kinda happy
Maybe he's upside down
its because he is so proud of his guitar solo
or mabe its because he is proud of the whole song
He's happy that he doesn't have to hurt anyone
The wheat ball is not a bad character. He's been mistreated in the facility, talked down to when not ignored. GlaDOS played off his low confidence and planted the seed of paranoia and fear. He's a little dumbass but I love him so much, I want to hug him and give his chassis a little smooch 🥺🥺 ❤
Yes praise the wheat ball
I always thought he changed over the course of the game.
At first, yes he was a moron as decided by his programming, until she crushed him.
Then that protocol failed to run, resulting in good ideas such as "Hiding from GLaDOS", and "Shut down the toxin/turrets" BEFORE entering her chamber.
Those were all smart ideas, didn't even have an idea when they reached her chamber until the announcer chimed in.
Meaning... He didn't PLAN to take her spot at all.
After being plugged into the direct CORE of the facility he would have gotten priority repairs. Him laughing might have been caused by the system repairing his code, much like the itch being scratched. But like a tickle.
The facility was designed to TEST, so it's code would surely overshadow any core that is plugged in.
Even the most useless one, heck even a lazy core would be given the drive to test.
@@electrobob992 I think that the power he suddenly had changed his mind too (he's been hurt so much and hey now he can make it so he never feels bad about himself again and he is never hurt again!!!!!!!), and so did the overwhelming amount of information and power he had in the mainframe of the whole facility!
**Re-installs Portal 2**

Of course.
I heard this song years ago, and I loved it.
Now, I've found it again after all this time, and it's even better than I remembered.
First song I ever heard by Aviators back then, beautiful.
This is beautiful. I honestly have chills right now.
Just as I was getting over my "WHY WHEATLEY" feelings too...
This. Is definitely something.
It's much different then other songs that I've seen. Those songs have a sorta cheery feel to them. (however, I still like them) This is deep, it feels like it has a much deeper meaning, and a more serious tone. It brings sorrow to my heart, it gives me a good, sad feeling.
The lyrics show the conflict Wheatley is going/has gone through.
You've done well with this song, and I'm sure the rest of your music is amazing like this one.
Yessss!!!!
I feel the same about this song i love it and theres a one hour loop of the song for doing long chores and listen to this because it's....Awsome
When I first listened to this, I didn't look at the lyrics and thought it was "These broken lives inside are tearing me apart" and thought about the corrupted cores on the mainframe body. Which are literally broken lives, messing with his mind.
Black holes inside my soul
happy one million views to this song!!! its been deserving it for 9 years, but better late than never!
the original portal game was the first real game I ever played. The sequel and lore to go alongside it is fascinating, so when I saw one of my favourite musicians cover this, I must've clicked before a planck time elapsed.

"Black holes inside my soul are pulling me from you" is the perfect summary of not only Wheatley, but so many people in real life who do bad things (be they big or little). It's often (yes, I know, not always) because of some emotional issue or unmet emotional need, and the person may know their actions are wrong but be unwilling or feel unable to stop because of those emotional issues that cloud their priorities. I think it's important for anyone who interacts with other people to understand this.

Finally, a song that reflects about who Wheatley is and his internal conflicts! And words are so beautiful and poetic and anguished in a way you rarely see in this fandom especially with Wheatley- I got spoiled for ending before I played the game so I didn't have as much of a reaction then, but listening to this makes my heart ache, I just want to save him...

Ah yes, I love both Portal 2 and Wheatley, so I love that you made a song for him.
You used that major VI root chord. I don't know the technical terms for it is but I love that when it's used in songs
Spectra I've been listening to Drones on repeat, so yeah, some Muse influence is definitely present. xD
Aviators So when can we expect a Muse cover? Haha
One Who Comments Aviators Oooooooooooh *raises hand and politely asks to play bass if this ever happens*
Spectra It is called a Cadence, Like Princess Cadence, and VI is called the amen Cadence, or the finished cords, I still remember something from music class.......... all those years ago. This will explain.ruclips.net/video/C5NLcpT1yEI/видео.html
WestAussie Brumby Hmm, I don't think it's quite one of those cadences. It's more like using an A major chord as the 6th chord when you're in the key of C. So it's kinda like it acts as a minor key when it's actually a major one... I'm probably still not explaining it right, but it does the same thing in quite a few Glaze songs (including Awoken, so I guess that's part of the reason why some commenters on this video found those 2 songs similar)
I watched this shortly after it came out, and I just randomly thought of this song one day. So here I am, my ears hurt but the *NASTOLGIA*

I know you've used it before, but it's not only the vocals I was referring to, but the feel and sound of the song in general.
It's a great homage (even if not intended). :D

Wheatley was an awesome character! I loved Portal 2, and this song is so awesome. It's been so long since I have listened to your songs and I regret it. You still are SO great and SO talented. Keep going, knowing that you have my support!! ^^
Wow, I've listened to this song for a long time, having never played Portal 2, and now that I've played it... Damn, that hits different. Wheatley did nothing wrong. Except for, well, everything he did wrong. I still felt like he deserved better than the ending he got.
Of course! Wheatley has been verbally abused and told he was designed to be stupid his whole life, and hendidn't have a chance against that mainframe with his preprogrammed low impulse control - he did horrible things that he never would have done had he been treated with decency somehow, and so I pity him and wish he had a chance to be a good person! I also think the same about most real people when they do bad things. Pity and condemnation usually go hand in hand, because people don't do horrible things for no reason - they do them to meet some usually important physical or emotional need that they really should have had met alredy, or because they were never taught how to handle their emotions in a healthy way, or if they do do horrible things for no reason that usually means they have a severe mental illness and need medical treatment. Either way, condemnation without pity or vice versa is inhumane.
I love this so much!! I was looking around for Portal songs and this is now my favorite!
The story of Portal 2 is actually sad when u do Think about it. And now all those things combined and me listening to this song.. man....

You know...after all these years, i finally came back to this song... and i love it still.
Sometimes I ask the meaning of life. Is this just a test? Are we a huge test for something else? We are also testing. The world, the animals, elements, each other... what do we mean to this world? Is there an answer that we have yet to find? Its true. Its not a game. Its another huge test. Songs make me think of these things. Including this song Exile Vilify and many others that I may not remember. They remind me of my life... my friends and those I've lost. Im tearing myself apart inside while thinking of these things. This song reminds me of these things. And I'd like to thank you. This is another gift or reminders, happiness and life. I want to remind you. Of the things we have accomplished. Every thing we do, is another step closer to the truth.
This is by far the best portal 2 song I have ever heard, you did a great job!
