2020: Quarantine log, day 36. I’ve begun to hyperfixate on Portal again. I’m listening to the songs from the games at 3:30 AM. I’m starting to really understand what Chell felt like in the test facility.
“There’s no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake” GLaDOS is amazing and she has better quotes than any other character ever
She's like the Morgan Freeman of women. Her voice is unbelieving beautiful, I would pay her just to read a phone book with that mechanical voice filter.
I don't want a portal 3. The ending for 2 wrapped up the story so nicely, it was bittersweet but it was a real ending. That said, since Portal and Half Life are in the same universe I would love to see some crossover when HL3 is released in 20 years. At least make some references to Chell/Glados.
At first portal was just a simple game created by 10 people. It was pretty cool. Especially at the end of the game. After that, Portal 2 came out and that's where things started to get interesting. At the end of chapter 5, I was worried that the game was finished too quickly and I was sorta sad that I wasted 20.00 bucks buying that game. But the plot twist was extremely unexpected. After that the game started to leave messages, leading to theories. And that created a huge community. It was not the cliche ''beat the bad guy'' type of thing. The game entirely had it's own clever story mode. This is why we want Portal 3. If Valve can come up with something clever one more time. Just. Once more.
I originally didn't like Want You Gone, but it grew on me when I realized that it initially sounds like GLaDOS admitting defeat and being done with Chell's s**t, but then I spent way too much time on TVTropes, came back to listen again, and realized that GLaDOS is a gigantic tsundere.
+blahblahblah5155 We won't get another anyway. If you look at Half-Life it ended at the second one and no other activity after that. We're still waiting for the third Half-Life and it's been around 11 years so yeah. It's also been 4 years since Portal 2. Our god Gaben doesn't like making a third sequel for some reason so we should probably sacrifice some more virgins.
"She was a lot like you, maybe not quite as heavy" "One day she woke me up, so I could live forever. Too bad the same will never happen to you." These burns are so hot that I'm melting
played portal for the first time a few months ago and when i heard "this was a triumph" it activated my fight or flight reflex god damn i never heard the full lyrics before playing portal, i just knew it was a popular early internet song from who knows where
+John Metzger they are just waiting for the next big game inovation. HL1 was a brake though on 3D gaming, portal 1 introduced physics as an active a needed thing in a game, HL2 extended on the physics, portal 2 added more puzzle mechanics and use of a gell. So until the next brake though we are stuck.
+nathaniel holden I'm sorry, you have a good point here. I just have to point out the fact that the term is "breakthrough", not "brake through". A breakthrough is a sudden or dramatic development, such as breaking through a barrier to knowledge. A "brake through" is a nonexistent term that would mean something akin to hitting the brakes on your car and going through a patch of ice or something.
What an amazing accomplishment by Jon Coulton though. Knocking it out of the park with the first song and then making a follow-up that was EVEN BETTER.
i haven't seen the ending to portal 2 in years, and i genuinely just burst into tears. This game is actually the reason I started drawing, and now i'm doing an illustration degree. I can't believe how much of an impact these games had on me
Anyone else notice in Portal 2 GLaDOS is more 'human' so to speak? Like just by listening to the songs you can tell in the second game she actually spoke more like a person with emotions and tones-
It's was your imagination. But BlackWiddow is right, she basically realized she was Chell's mom at some point. If I remember right the Cara Mia's lyrics are something, "My Child" "Turn your back to science" something like that. I imagine the only reason she forgot was because when the human brain is the human brain is turned into data it makes you a little crazy, then the vast amounts of time that passed weakened that.
Cara mia then it goes onto say my child. GlaDOS is Caroline so she does sound more human especially when she remembers. Also the second game had a bigger budget and they could really clean up the audio to make it sound better.
Colt Scrabbleborough Esquire actually i agree except for when you say that a brain being turned to data points might make you a bit crazy. if u think about Caroline was still Caroline afterwards but they soon turned her into GLaDOS by attaching so many cores to her that she was not herself any more. other than that im in total agreement
Drake's Epicness You're right, that's possible and likely. I completely forgot about the cores. When she was inserted into the machine that's when she saved Chell, all the cores were disconnected then, and had been away from her for a while. And Wheatley started to regret what he did and all that. The reason I was getting the feeling it was the process itself was because of the dialogue of Cave Johnson in the Perpetual Testing Initiative levels. In that he is placed on in a computer like he was initially trying to do and starts going nuts. The cores aren't mentioned in that, but I suppose it's likely they were used.
HAHAHA, SAME, PORTAL SUCH A AMAZING GAMES. The only reason why i played portal 2 is bcuz i want to know the portal 2 ending song cuz portal Still Alive was amazing. I didnt wanted to search utube cuz that will be boring haha

Sure, if the person you broke up with tore you pieces and threw every piece in a fire, and the only consolation is a delicious and moist cake. And somehow you're still alive enough to write a song.
"And believe me I'm still alive" Me: cool "I'm doing science and I'm still alive" Me: cool "I feel FANTASTIC and I'm still alive" Me: you know I'm happy you are- "While you're dying I'll be still alive" Me: ok.... "And when you dead I will be still alive" Me: ........ This took a dark turn all of a sudden
Portal 1's "Still alive" Is actually remixed for the radio in the beginning of Portal 1 in the chamber, and both scattered and found with the trash in portal 2
The fact that everyone ignores that "Black MESA" keeps me thinking there's more lore, it's in the 1st game ending song, and even in the own 1st game...
@SeperiorGT i don't know anything important about half life, so thanks for telling me, but the thing about it's connected, for what i know, was that in the end of half life 3 in the supposed game, you end in Portal or something like that, but because it's not really a game, technically we can't see it like that, so i like to see it as just an easter egg
Portal 2 was the first Valve game I ever played. I got it from my library, and I was skeptical at first. In the end the game sucked me in to the Valve games like the tornado that brings you to OZ.
With me, I also played Portal 2 first. It was an overnight bday gaming party and I was convinced to play a random game on the shelf until 6 in the morning, Portal 2. My sleep deprived mind took half an hour on each puzzle xD (I didn't complete it, got stuck just at the first Cave Johnson dialogue) Portal 2 is the best game ever.
I love how Portal 2's ending song starts with amazing singing and slowly it just turns into trying to insult someone as much as possible musically. Also the instrumental of the song sounds like GLaDOS was in a hurry to look nice by making a song so she mixed up some random sounds.
Funny story, I bought this game with the intention of never playing it. After leaving it alone for months, I was forced to play it when my Internet went out for about 3 days. Oh how this game has left emotional scars in my heart. Thank you Internet for making me play this game. The feels...Biblethump
well, I mean it was the summer sale.....and I had extra cash. I knew I would have to play it eventually, I just thought that it would be in a long time off since I was playing games like Fallout and Borderlands at that time.
Just recently played these games. I'm a LITTLE disappointed that they were so short, I beat them both back to back in a day. That said: the first one in particular was obviously a cheap and simple game, much like comparing Warcraft 1 to Warcraft 3, or Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 6, and despite that it was extremely fun, and at times challenging, and the story was a great introduction to what would be seen in the second game. Plus there was the line: "The cake is a lie" which I've heard so many times before in other games as a reference to this one, and now I understand it better than just looking the line up on Google. The second game, I had no idea about Wheatley and how funny the game was. I was laughing the whole time, and it still had all the same kind of fun the first game had. The puzzles required a lot more thought, and at times I truly was stumped. The potato was awesome! haha In all, I really couldn't recommend the games more. The only (ONLY) downside to these games is that it is just so short. I was really fairly skeptical of all the claims I'd heard about these being some of the best games ever made, but they definitely lived up to the hype.
i agree the portal 1 was short , but i felt portal 2 was just long enough. Either way brilliant games. Some of the few games i played that real lived up to the hype. Pluss portal 2 got co-op so there is that.
Portal 1 is living proof that you don't need tons of money to make a decent game. You can tell it was low budget, but it is still a fun and well put together game. And then Valve did the smart thing and used the money it made to make a better one, true to the core but with the sharpness that you quite frankly need time and money to achieve.
Portal 3; the revalation that GLaDOS is the experiment, not Chell, and GLaDOS was never in control at all, it was all a setup to test the capabilities and sadistic nature of AI.
This wasn't just a fun game to play, but the who time I spent looking into the back-story, Easter-eggs and the feels for Ratman really made this worth my money :D
even though I picked up portal and portal 2 earlier this year, it still feels deeply nostalgic. Every single aspect of the games reminds me of a better time, when I didn't have to worry about anything I currently struggle with.
Do we really need Portal 3? Portal 2 had one of the best and satisfying endings I've ever seen. If they made Half Life 3, It would work because that could have bonus chapters (but then again I never beat HL1 or HL2) but with Portal, they rapped it up in a such a way they don't have to. Just my opinion doe :P
I think valve adding the Perpetual Testing Imitative (community test chambers and level editor) is a good indication that Portal 3 will never happen. I don't feel a Portal 3 is necessary. :)
M1ker0 I think basically what people want when they say they want Portal 3 is that they want another Valve puzzle game. You're right, it is pretty well wrapped up, but we want more of the ingenuity and mechanics of Portal. Although - a co-op Portal/Half-Life crossover could be cool, in which Gordon and Chell have to team up.
I've listened to this upload since before I can remember. Now I study game design at the collage where the concept for portal was first pitched. Fucks me up man.
I walked in on my boyfriend playing portal and watched him awhile and I told him this was the longest game tutorial ever and he told me it was that actual game XD I know better now but that still gets me
I was a huge portal fan and half life fan, I enjoyed both, when I got to this part of the game, I can not express how crazy it felt when she said "Mabey black mesa" Because I had no idea the two were related at the time

Just.
Once more.
Mutant Fang You can still probably find Narbacular Drop. One cool thing was that you could place portals through the other portal.
Alexander Lowry but why do that? you only have 2 portals in 1 player mode
Rocket Raccoon to go farther or go to previously inaccessible areas
arthurs blade but wouldn't that just collapse the portals into themselves
No, the one you replaced disappeared after the new one hit the wall.
The ending where Chell finally walks out of Aperture ALWAYS gives me chills.
The elevator ride is, for some reason, exhilarating and desolating at the same time.

+nathaniel holden I'm sorry, you have a good point here. I just have to point out the fact that the term is "breakthrough", not "brake through". Anyone else notice in Portal 2 GLaDOS is more 'human' so to speak?
Like just by listening to the songs you can tell in the second game she actually spoke more like a person with emotions and tones-
It's because she realised who she was.
When I first killed glados in portal and heard this song I almost cried ;(

Portal 2 was the first Valve game I ever played. I got it from my library, and I was skeptical at first. In the end the game sucked me in to the Valve games like the tornado that brings you to OZ.
With me, I also played Portal 2 first. It was an overnight bday gaming party and I was convinced to play a random game on the shelf until 6 in the morning, Portal 2. My sleep deprived mind took half an hour on each puzzle xD (I didn't complete it, got stuck just at the first Cave Johnson dialogue)
Portal 2 is the best game ever.
LITERALLY THE SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME, thanks comment from 3 years ago, now i am not alone
@@vincetang7548I hope you’re *still alive*.
The potato was awesome! haha
In all, I really couldn't recommend the games more. The only (ONLY) downside to these games is that it is just so short. I was really fairly skeptical of all the claims I'd heard about these being some of the best games ever made, but they definitely lived up to the hype.
Is.. Omg ;-;
i agree the portal 1 was short , but i felt portal 2 was just long enough. Either way brilliant games. Some of the few games i played that real lived up to the hype. Pluss portal 2 got co-op so there is that.
+Tord L Not to mention how awsome Wheatley was I was destroyed when he turned on me
Pinky the deamon yeah that is true. That took me by a suprise too. Still it would be cool to see them try portal 3.
Portal 1 is living proof that you don't need tons of money to make a decent game. You can tell it was low budget, but it is still a fun and well put together game. And then Valve did the smart thing and used the money it made to make a better one, true to the core but with the sharpness that you quite frankly need time and money to achieve.
Honestly the Portal: Still Alive one made me a little sad after I played it... Dont lie you did too...
rip companion cube ;(
Chel pissed Glados off so much she went from wanting her dead to wanting to get rid of her by any means, even giving her what she wants.
Portal 3; the revalation that GLaDOS is the experiment, not Chell, and GLaDOS was never in control at all, it was all a setup to test the capabilities and sadistic nature of AI.
The thing that I love about the redacted part of want you gone, is that what she’s saying is her caring about you!!!! I love glados
This wasn't just a fun game to play, but the who time I spent looking into the back-story, Easter-eggs and the feels for Ratman really made this worth my money :D

“Goodbye my only friend”
Oh, did you think I meant you?
damn GLaDoS that hurt a little
even though I picked up portal and portal 2 earlier this year, it still feels deeply nostalgic.
Need? No, but Portal 2 was a beautiful step up from Portal 1, fleshed out perfectly... I guess one would have to ask where could it go from here?
I think valve adding the Perpetual Testing Imitative (community test chambers and level editor) is a good indication that Portal 3 will never happen. I don't feel a Portal 3 is necessary. :)
It would be cool if the field you were in a t the end was fake and you were realy still stuck underground
+Neo or you then go into a skyscaper or building which you have to escape from in portal 3 and the grass part is just to fool you
M1ker0 I think basically what people want when they say they want Portal 3 is that they want another Valve puzzle game. You're right, it is pretty well wrapped up, but we want more of the ingenuity and mechanics of Portal. Although - a co-op Portal/Half-Life crossover could be cool, in which Gordon and Chell have to team up.
