Just spent 40 minutes watching someone bash some dents out and trying to get a fan running.... loved every minute of it and was actually hoping it would be longer.

I actually respect the fact that you want to keep it rusty like it is. Most people would do it up perfect and hide what it originally was beneath the paint. Awesome to see you make a cool little thing like that cushman just by replacing and fixing the necessities. Love your vids mustie. 👌🏻

The blower motor is shunt wound like a starter motor. It has no permanent magnets. Both the rotor and stator are wire wound electromagnets. Reversing the polarity reverses it on both the rotor and stator so it ends up spinning the same was no matter how you connect it.
BTW did my Mustie1 impression this weekend. Fixed a golf cart then tore apart a bicycle.

I think all the ‘old school’ Mustie fans are smiling to themselves, regarding the negative comments about mustie’s approach to patina, surface rust , original paint , dings and dents.... it’s what mustie does , he brings old derelict non working stuff back to life .
If you want shiny paint and big buck resto’s go watch Gas Monkey garage.
    I know what I’d rather be watching !! 😀

I wouldn't put too much effort into that squirrel cage blower, that is/was an off the shelf blower made by Dayton, Dayton makes all kinds of oddball off the shelf stuff. BUT while it is possible that Meter-maid Cart came with the Dayton blower from the factory, it seems to me more likely that the mechanical maintenance people replaced the original blower with the Dayton unit. Where I worked we often did the same, usually Dayton replacements were cheaper than buying original units. Dayton still makes 12VDC squirrel cage fans, some of them are pretty cheap under $50.

    • @queenofyeay
      @queenofyeay 6 лет назад +1

Well, as a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic for over 30 years experience, I can tell you that once one of those blower motors seize up they are pretty much right on the verge of seizing up again given a little time to sit and enough humidity. Honestly, that blower is just junk, especially with the rotted case and fin off of the squirrel cage, which will unbalance the blower. It also looked like he might have bent the shaft (or the cage). Trust me, it was working to a degree but it's not ever going to run like it once did. You must have some pretty valuable "bugs" to be able to buy coffee and cookies with 50 of them!

That blower definitely looks like an off the shelf unit that could probably be sourced from an industrial supply house (or Ebay) for not too much money. The Dayton brand motor gives it away. Those flex hoses are also likely to be obtainable from the same sources, though the aluminum hose you found should work just as well.

I’ve watched almost all of your vids. The instructional nature of the vids is great. I’m a guitar player and have learned tons of songs through the vids. Well, with your vids I’ve learned carb teardowns, cleanings and reconstructs enough to make me feel confident that I could actually do it!! Metal work, wheels, brakes, whole engine rebuilds on everything from Volkswagens to weedwhackers. And you talk to us as if we were in the garage. One complaint I have is that you’ve got every tool you could ever need! Tim “The Toolman” would be jealous! I mean a plasma cutter for God’s sake? Anyway,, you’re fun! Thanks for doing these and keep it up!!!

Bet those love taps with the hammer let the ATF get in to the bearing, looks like it'll live for a while longer now! Not sure, but the cage might be wobbling from being bent more than or in addition to being out of balance. But if the cage fails, might be able to replace just that, eh?
Probably a good thing the fan didn't run before being removed, there would have been shop-rag puree everywhere! Nice work on the door and nose, it's looking and working better every time!

Having been an auto body and frame repairman for 48 years. When I saw that door sprung the way it was, I was thinking the door was "wind sprung" just take a small solid rubber block and put it between the door and the "A" pillar and gently push the door towards the opening. I believe your hinges are sprung.

A little trick I learned about blowing out cavities like that safely. Ask the wife for one of her miss matched kneehighs and put it over the most cluttered end and then seal the air hose tip with a towel on the other end and let her rip… There’s very little dust because the shredding‘s actually filter it as they come out. I’ve even gone as far as to use a leaf blower on one end maxed out for pressure and that really seems to help a lot because it sure beats tearing the whole part out especially if you’ve got fins inside... just sharing ;)

Our Cushman had a door issue, too. Someone had backed into something with the door open and bent the frame of the door slightly. It got man-handled back into place. :D Ours doesn't have any of the blower structure, the defrost hood is missing also. Now we know what the big hole in the dash is for, the defrost! Ours wasn't a meter maid, they said it was used in a factory for getting around, and we had a devil of a time figuring out why there was only a first gear -- we didn't have a lift and the linkage for 2/3 was missing/removed, we presume for factory floor safety reasons...

I worked for a company that made similar units through the 80's once tightened those set screws on the squirrel were always tough to loosen, if you can manage to get a drop of 3 in 1 household oil on the barring it will do wonders for if you think it, gotta tell you you may want to leave the squirrel cage alone it's fragile and you can access the shaft from the discharge between the housing and the cage with a drop of oil on the end of a zip tie

Fair Warning, MAGNETS WILL SEAL TO YOUR PAINT. I thought I could just take them off and replace them, after a year, they were permanent, and removing them not only destroyed them, but they ripped leaving a massive section that you can not remove without damage. Maybe heat would do it, but there are not many options, and the magnet companies are useless. They have no suggestions other than ice scrapers, which were a fail. They told me the signs MUST BE REMOVED FREQUENTLY. I don't recall seeing that warning or disclaimer ANYWHERE.

Mustie1, The vice on the lift was ingenious! When the first frame shot of you doing that came up, I said to myself “Haha That’s a great idea buddy”! For the front left fender; I didn’t know you did woodworking? Metal bandsaw for wood - why not! You really know how to get the kinks out. Really straight seem!
That mouse had a perfect home in the heater box. Nice work on the fan! Glad you tried working on it. It should be fine for awhile then replace if necessary later.
Looking forward to the other Cushman videos you said were still in the editing stage and newer ones!

Those door hinges were a little "sprung". The wind maybe caught it at some point in it's life. You need some kind of (removable) stop for the doors. Appreciate watching the progress.

A friend of mine in high school had a Cushman (late 60’s or early 70’s model). We took it for a spin up and down the alley a few times.

I just spotted a rusty key under the windshield near the dash, about 1.17 in. looks like it's been hiding there a while. wouldn't be the key for the original ignition would it? academic now as it was fubar but wouldn't it be ironic if that had fell out from being tucked under a window rubber or similar!

Ah well, wouldn't have been much use if it did. Would've been sort of cool if it was though. Thanks for getting back, and keep up the good work (on machines and videos both). Cheers

You do so much work you should really get a set of Irwin wire strippers! They are the best. They only take off the coating and you will not lose any wires.

You could line the inside with 1/2" radiant barrier foam and kept in some of the heat and quiet the cab noise down.

I think the orange hose is Cat or Skeet used in aircraft heater applications. Aircraft Spruce and other home built sources have various sizes by the foot.

This scooter needs some mounted remote machine guns for pulling over people that should not be driving in the first place.
