So I've been watching the build on this and came back to the beginning to see how it all started. As you were doing to the tour of the rear end and trans I had an idea for you. The snow blower tires with the portal axle type system of the VW bus. More ground clearance for playing in the snow during winter. Just a goofy idea
I might still have some engine parts for that motor, I'll have to look in my shop. If there is and you need them there yours. I know I had a distributor, a few carbs, and other parts for that year motor. I used to work at a golf course and bought one of their old cushmans and 2 motors. Cushman is no longer here and the guy that bought it didn't want all the extra parts for it. I'll get back with you if I find anything.

Watching you struggle with the Cushman ignition saddens me. Over here in UK we would ask a Scouser to start it and it would be done in 3 seconds flat! They can open any door or start any vehicle instantly.
Turned over. Found & repaired points. Gave it oiled gas. Shot decent amps at it. *SUCCESS !* I would now add 1 pint of Marvel to oil, 1 pint to a gallon of high octane gas, a dose of "lead substitute", and let it idle @800 RPM till empty. That will burn off any moisture, hone and glaze the cylinders, and make it easier to work on. I know you know all this- I'm just talkin.
Only watched two of your videos and can already tell you are like me. Love getting engines out of scrap yards or people give up on. Also that once you start a project you can’t stop thinking about how to fix them! It takes me forever at times to go to sleep because I can’t stop thinking about what I can do to get the motor running. 😂 nice to see I’m not the only one.

Back in the 60's my dad worked for the post office and they used these Cushman's with an enclosed box on the rear to deliver mail. Well, they had an action and my dad brought one home. We tinkered with it and got it running great but with fewer problems than this guy had. Anyway's, all 4 of us boys would get in the back of that box while my dad would drive it down to the meat market and people would just stare when one of us came out of the back then another one of us, then another one of us, and the last one of us. They couldn't figure out how we all fit into the back of that little three-wheeled mail truck. We had a ball with it and so much fun. Hell, it would pull wheelies. Our dad, later on, sold it to a guy that made an Ice Cream truck out of it lol. Hope he had as much fun as we did. So many cool things and cars when we were kids but not anymore. Those good times are all gone now.

Place I used to work had several of these,except ours were four wheel.Ours had a very low speed rear end,they were geared as work scooters.As I recall the burden scooters we had were geared 10-1 in the rear end,The meter maid type you have there has a 6-1 rear end.Transmission,engine the same.We changed rear ends on one scooter to the meter maid rear,running 5-70x8 4 ply trailer type tires.One of the hi ranking supervisors drove the scooter about five minutes threw a fit made us change it back to the low speed rear end.Probably almost identical to the one you have because this all happened back around 1979-1982 time frame.

Looks like a great putter to have if we get hit by a solar storm or EMP. Very simple, great for local grocery or parts transport. Reminds me of an old Harley SERVICAR trike. Thanks J K
Good deal the points weren't behind the flywheel. That had to run intermittently crappy for the last owner where the points plastic insulator /connection was loose. Gonna be neat to see where you go with this one. Thought I'd add this too. On my Cushman I drilled the wheel flanges/hubs so I could mount them snowmobile trailer tires to it. Stock them are kinda an odd bolt pattern.
Another awesome project you get to work on all kinds of knackered vehicles, engines of some sort and you bring them back to life, I wish I had mechanical skills like that as I like tinkering with stuff. I liked the old frame bike you had and put the 4 stroke engine on it looked awesome, I have a mountain bike and would like to put a 50cc engine on it but here in England the minimum you can have is a 250w motor any higher is classed as a motorcycle that requires tax, insurance, licence ect would be a good project but could work out expensive keep up with these projects 👍

Looking and sounding good, if the brake master cylinder is shot it can be replaced with a Clark fork lift one. I can't remember the bore off the top of my head.
those little trucks are awesome. i just traded one off cause i needed a tractor and a guy had a 8N ford he was willing to swap. loved that little truck though
Back in the mid 80's at NAS Norfolk, we used a Cushman on the flight line to run from the hanger out to our aircraft spots. Those things took a hell of a lot of abuse and always started!
Over my lifetime have seen these Cushmams worked on and I have driven quite a few of them as well. They can fly down the road! That company later on got rid of those motors and went to Kolers
I do a lot of work on OMC outboards. Knew they had the lawn boy lawnmowers but I don't know anything about Cushman or that they had an OMC motor in them. Maybe OMC bought Cushman at some point? I'll have to Google this and learn more. Of course Johnson and Evinrude made opposed cylinder outboard motors way back in the day. I had no idea they were making an opposed motor in 1978. Thanks again for a lesson on old motors :-)
that's the beauty of old wheels. Unless there is major engine damage, all it takes is spark, fuel and timing and any motor of the era will run. No computers, no microchips, fancy sensors, or other crap to keep it from going.
Initial thoughts: add some right and left casters to the front for going over 45 mph. 8-) To get past 45 mph put in a VW motor and transmission. hotted up as necessary to at least double the Cushman motor's power. 8-)) No matter what, have fun!
love it, the county gave these to security at fair grounds years ago and some in use still , a buddy of mine in charge of security at fair grounds was hunting parts and told him I has a few, he came out and I gave him what I had ! only saved them due to be hard to get !! love thise old Cushman products.

I'm in the market to buy one but I have no idea where to look or what to buy? I'd like to buy something pretty heavy duty. And could a guy make his own jumper pack on a like a little two wheeler? what's inside of a jumper pack also?

I picked up one a while back wasn't police didn't have cab but basically the same but mine had a 3 speed trans with two speed rear end.. the front wheel steers on them basically sideways you can almost make a zero turn turn, mine had an issue with the mechanical fuel pump I just added an electric one ...... the one I had sat outside uncovered for over 10 years I added some fresh fuel and a battery and it fired right up
that thing is just neat!! that'll be cool to run around in 👍..As for the moped could you put a little 4 wheeler like a 50? kind of looks similar...anyway great job as always fun video

Mustie1 weird. I looked it up and it looks for all the world like a worm gear. It's a pretty low ratio so maybe the gear can drive the worm in this case
How about taking that old bus the trailer was on chopping the front end off, shortening and chopping it to make it look like a mini single cab and mounting it where the current cab is, leaving the bed. A little involved but I bet it would look real cool!
I know, with the beard full by the time next Christmas comes around, you can play Santa and deliver packages from the truck in the local parade. OR, you could restore the truck and put it out front for your mailbox and, when people thing they are seeing the police or mail, they will slow down enough to pull out of the driveway into the very busy road. Congratulations on getting it running. Not too many could have made that happen.

hi just ran over you your video's and really enjoy how you do them .couple thing you might want to know. if you every nee to drill out a key switch use a masonry drill bit it will tear up the bit but will go right thought it . on the ing switch on the black part most of the will have letter telling what it dose like r for run and I for ing and s for start and a for aux stuff . there is a tool you need to get it cost from 80.00 to 180.00 called a power probe .it is like a volt meter but alowers you to put power to something or a ground to it. they have videos on it . once you get one you will though your test light away keep up the good work I enjoy what you do
they are the same pattern as the boat trailer tires you can buy already mounted ... yes I used to have one , but mine was a water cooled automatic trans one lol
Hi Mustie, do you have a collection of old keys? Sometimes you'll find one that works. PS Otherwise I believe a slide hammer with a coarse screw on the end works well to break an ignition lock. Or I might have been watching too many movies....

you would be a noisey car thief lol Reminds me of the barrel lock stolen out of my Mazda B2000 pickup when it was stolen and I got it back 2 weeks later no key. I went to the guy at the impound yard and said how do I start it he said you have a screw driver. Oh geez put a screwdriver in the barrel and started it up and drove it home less by truck tool box with all of my tools that I never got back. So new points new ignition switch and a good battery and a wide open throttle does wonders lol
Yup, my GO-4 was governed at 45. MPH, but I've modified that. She will roll up to 80. MPH, but the front starts to lift/ float at 60. Not a jackrabbit take off, but it will roll...... can't wait to see what you do with her. ;-}

Engines arent that complicated. Generally if it turns over, you can get it to run with a little work :)

Interesting the dual coil ignition. With no distributor rotor in the cap, must be firing both plugs on power and exhaust.

With the input up high my guess is that differential is a worm gear
but it still rolls

My mini jeep has a worm drive gearbox from an old snowblower and it rolls fine.
Beyond a certain gear angle and ratio a worm drive backdrives just fine.

it would be cool to see a retro restauration,what I mean keep the rusty look but make it solid.
OMC is Evenrude/Johnson outboards... you should be able to get new points that fit that engine from your local boat dealer

Hi Mustie, do you have a collection of old keys? Sometimes you'll find one that works.
PS Otherwise I believe a slide hammer with a coarse screw on the end works well to break an ignition lock. Or I might have been watching too many movies....

you would be a noisey car thief lol Reminds me of the barrel lock stolen out of my Mazda B2000 pickup when it was stolen and I got it back 2 weeks later no key. I went to the guy at the impound yard and said how do I start it he said you have a screw driver. Oh geez put a screwdriver in the barrel and started it up and drove it home less by truck tool box with all of my tools that I never got back. So new points new ignition switch and a good battery and a wide open throttle does wonders lol
I like messing around with those old Cushman carts, though all I have ever worked on is the older battery type used in warehouses.

Yup, my GO-4 was governed at 45. MPH, but I've modified that. She will roll up to 80. MPH, but the front starts to lift/ float at 60. Not a jackrabbit take off, but it will roll...... can't wait to see what you do with her. ;-}
