You picked this bus up from my parents' friends! Always loved seeing the bus back in the field when we went to their house. So cool to see this video and glad it went somewhere where it can be put to use.
If you go back to when they were picking it up do you see the snowmobile there. I buy sell trade and swap vintage snowmobiles I was wondering if I could get it. If so please reply to this and I'll give you my number to give them. I live in new hampshire as well
I wonder how many folks were like me and come back to watch this classic will it run vid. Even though I know how it will end I catch myself with a smile on my face and shouting: COME ON BABY, COME ON BABY "RUN". A perfect way to have my 1st cup of coffee of the day.
answers to common questions, starter was cranked no more then 60 seconds then cooled down 15 min between tries, engine spun by hand, oil was clean, l used an oil/gas mix poured into the carb then cranked, the valves were not seating at 1st , so it took a while for the compression to come back, the bus is just for parts to save my other buses. the rusted panals are junk so l did not care about using a crow bar on them, the bus was parked back in 1986 do to being too rusty for the road, and last thanks to everyone who watched, if l knew this video was going to go viral l would have put more effort into the filming,
14598175 mostly the muffler, probably compression, and cam duration, maybe fan noise and being air cooled no water around the cylinders adding to the mix
i remember keeping that big axle socket in my '63 Westfalia's tool box in the 70's. Good way to turn the mechanics on that old engine too! Your vid made me smile. Peace, baby
Anybody else hold their breath listening to that winch cable music as it pulled the van ....like a time capsule treasure hunt going through this vehicle....great stuff
Holy crap, the loading with the wench had me nervous. I saw where there was snap sound and dust flew from the cable i was like "THIS IS IT!!!" then nothing. Glad you're safe lol.
I'm glad RUclips suggested one of your videos again a few days ago. I watched this one over a year ago and didn't even remember your name. Then, after fifteen videos and the VW bus connection, it dawned on me I'd seen you before Mustie 1. I've watched close to 20 in the last few days. Having a great time. Thanks for the vids. You even got me going on recovery of an old Murray riding mower I gave my son and after a few years it quit, so I gave him another used one I had. I got the old Murray Auto Riding Mower home today, listened to a Cushman Scooter video on the way home. Cheers.
What I was trying to say is that just about any starter motor will overheat when cranked excessively. Every vehicle I have owned or operated should not have the starter motor cranked over for more than 15-20 seconds to prevent overheating, then let the motor cool down for a bit.
from age 6-11 my family had an identical VW camper. same color, same interior. it was my favorite family car! we got it just before moving to West Virginia for 2 years. there were a few hills that i was worried we wouldn't make it up but the VW always managed to make it! thanks for sharing the video!
My first car was A 1979Volkswagen 4 door panel van type 2 second generation , I was 14 years old when it was given to me , living in Puerto Rico . Born and raised there , passed on to me by my father but then sold, two years later right before we moved here to The US . I’m now 44 . This vid reminds me of that 1st car, I should say 1st van I was given . I can’t believe how easily theses VW van/buses can resurrect from so many years of inactivity literally frozen in time. I can’t help also but to wonder as I watch this vid, if my 1st van still alive or has she bitten the dust for good .
Great video. I had a red 71 brand new I bought when I got out of the Army. Did a cross country trip in it. Melted a piston on the PA turnpike near Greensberg after a routine VW 6000 mile service appointment where the mechanic forgot to tighten the oil drain plug, thereby causing the engine to all but seize up. Stayed in The General Green Hotel for a week while the local VW dealer there rebuilt the engine and told me what caused the problem. I still remember they charged me $75 for new plugs, gaskets and oil none of which were included in the warranty. I'm still peed over it.
That's a really strong steel rope and that pulling motor is really powerful. Even loading it is such a great task in itself. A big errand taking it and then starting it. Volkswagen obviously had to fit engine at the most difficult to reach place and you reached it. Worth a lot of appreciation.
NICE! For the fun of it, I've gotten junk yard 8-tracks to play before. Looked to be in about the same condition as the yours. Of course, I didn't just pop them in, they need to be opened up, unwound and rewound back into the cartridge. A little rough here and there but didn't sound as bad as your would imagine. Hope you save the stereo, might be worth restoring as well.
I always enjoy these adventures ! Reminds me of the projects I' was involved in over the years of course as a young one we didnt have all the high tech gear or nowledge often we used a hillbilly tow system that was a heavy duty chain Fed thru a 8' pipe that we bolted onto the bumpers the pipe in theory allowed the tow vehicle to help brake the vehicle being towed as long as the driver kept the car in line with the front car After too many close calls i did wind up buying a actual tow bar that Was set up fo a VW but could wok on other Foreign cars with some Adapters and grade 8 bolts i actually towed a MG over 100 miles with it and still own the bar today like you its pulled many VW types very well
I had to chuckle when I saw the 8 tracks..1) brought back a lot of memories..the other ,Dad has 3 boxes a home unit and a car stereo of 8 tracks " one day they'll be back in style"...lol
These Cars are awesome. My dad owned a vw t1 in the 90s. It was parked in a Garage for about 30 years. He did not even changed the fuel and it runs perfectly fine.
It rather sounded like a stationary engine when it started to fire but it eventually kicked onto all four. It just needed a bit of fire to get the stuck valve moving again. If that is a factory rebuilt engine that hasn't done much between being put in and the bus getting parked it should be a good motor. A decent service and I reckon it'll run as good as new...
35:15 and all the blowing out of years of sitting = Oddly satisfying. I don't know why, but I was fascinated with the whole video. I'm no mechanic, but owned an old 66 bug and it made me love VWs. Even I, a complete automotive dummy could fix things on it. My gas pedal cable broke once, and for a month or two, my "pedal" was my arm out the window pulling a fishing line that ran to the carburetor, lol. At least I think that's what it was..... The thingy with the thingy that moves!
35:12 Though Mustie. I know the wind was blowing into your shop. But i fear the asbestos will be floating around and into your airways and byways..Lungs! Georgie boy was on point...But delivery was a failure.
So would love to see this restored. I am working on at 1972 VW Van for full restoration. Will be using it for my swimwear business, photo shoots, pop up shop. Will keep watching. Good luck.
this bus is more for parts to go on my other buses , but there are videos on my channel fixing them up. good luck getting yours together for your buisness, sounds like a great idea.
We have an old trash pile on our property that I didn't know about until a few years ago. One day I was down in the brush and noticed this junk pile. Now we'd been living here for a good 40 years, and before that, no one had been using that place for 10 or 20 years so the old incandescent light bulb I found, sitting on top of some rusted stuff, was just sitting there exposed to wind, rain and snow for a good 50 years or more. I brought the light bulb into the house, screwed it into a light socket and flipped it on. That light bulb still worked! It was one of the most amazing events of my life. I mean that junk pile was in amongst small trees that had been growing up on that stuff for decades and decades. Nobody had gone down there for many decades and it was totally overgrown. Well I guess you would suspect I'm making it up but it really did happen. The light bulb worked for a few months and then quit on me.
I have been there several times, similar buses, same tools, love this video! There are a few 100 $$$ in parts in that old girl from 1970. A few things are lacking from the interior photos that we always found in buses from the northwest, namely a few lego bricks, a couple of spent .22 casings and some kind of paperwork for something from Les Schwab tires.....(and some trash from McDonalds).
Just happened on this. I love the Micro Buses and the Bugs for that matter. My dad and I have a 1965 Chevy Corvair Corsa.. Some day I still would love a Micro Bus. I love to find one that is a camper.

Yah hoooo... this is similar to my old 88' Westphalia, this will be another good time with Mustie1 I can tell, I'm excited, and my old Van memories are full, left that van imaculent sodium filled rebuilt engine a great sitting my the beach van, open the door and louvered side window, crack a beer, life was good...
i was waiting for it to back fire and shoot a rat out of the pipe.... l.o.l. awesome to see those old motors spit and sputter then come back to life...
My father had such a VW original camper. When i drove it on some journeys i always like the acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear. He always maintained it well.
The second capacitor (condenser) that was loose was a RADIO Suppressor, it reduces interference on the vehicles' radio - It has nothing to do with the ignition system...
You gentleman are very, very brave even entering Mr. Moss. Great video and thanks for sharing. I couldn't have gone inside there. Not even to retrieve a wallet filled with money. I would have hired you to retrieve it for me. 😊
You know they had asbestos brakes back then. I was literally yelling NOOOO! when you breathed that shit in. You don't get many second chances with that stuff.
VHS or Beta Giving the throttle some pumpage is a good idea though when starting an engine that hasn't run for a while. Obviously don't redline it if it starts but it may need a certain amount of throttle to stay running and then later it will probably idle on its own.
VHS, Not sure if you mean that Mustie does this or other people. He's probably pouring 2 stroke fuel right down the throat of the carb like he does for most of his starts so it may be revving on its own since there's probably little to no actual metering happening from the carb. That and the carb is probably full of junk and useless anyway without a cleaning/rebuild. At least he uses two stroke fuel which has some lubrication built into it. That and given the fact that after that many cranks there should be oil circulated throughout as long as the pump is good. I know for sure that Mustie always checks the oil. I totally agree though with people jumping up and down on the throttle and trying to rev the crap out of it the second it fires. First there's likely no fuel in the carb float bowl anyway, So even if it had a working accelerator pump it it wouldn't squirt anything. Seems like every old carb has a hard accelerator pump these days so it'd still be a moot point. lol. Now if somebody filled the float bowl up then they could potentially use the throttle to rev it. But... I'd hope that if they were smart enough to actually fill the bowl that they'd know better. Well...... Who am I kidding. The world is full of people that don't always do good research before acting. lol. Either way.. Love Mustie's first start videos.
Yep. He's officially the world's dumbest mechanic. He should have taken off the carb at least and cleaned it all out first. Can you imagine 30 years of varnish in that carb?
Thank you for taking the time to make and post it so we could see you get it running. Love resurrecting my parents old, long forgotten machines in an out building. Few years ago brought their 42 yr old Cub Cadet back to life. This past winter their 47 year old Arctic Cat Panther: Hadn't run in about 30 years. Next project: their 49 year old Gravely walk behind bush hog/mower.
Have lived and worked in many states on vw buses, have own ed 7 diff types of bus all years, beetles, superbeetle bajas,Carmens, worked every national park with one have a question about vw I probably know about it
I worked VW dealerships in LA Ca. during the 1960s and '70s. I specialised in Type 3s and Type 4s as well as all fuel injection. I studied Bosch fuel injection under one of the German engineers who developed it for Robert Bosch Co in Germany. I was the first VW mechanic in the USA to attend school on the 411 and 412 model. I will never forget our Type 2 specialist, Bart Fillman, a long hair bearded hippy who new more about buses than anybody in the western USA. When he first tried a job at almost every VW dealership in the LA area he was refused employment. Finally he got a professional short hair wig fitted and Ogner VW hired him. After he had been there about two months he came in without the wig. By that time management realized how much he knew and had no problems with his hair. I loved working on VWs but wanted to go back to Japan, my wife's home, so I left VW and went to Toyota for training. When I went back to Japan I worked at a Japanese garage where I was paid very well as the European auto specialist rarely working on Toyotas.
I don't know where everybody was standing but if that cable would have snapped it would wrapped around somebody and cut them in half it would have been a bad day in paradise for somebody
1983 my father set up a backup fuel filter in our VW Bus, on a trip across the country, I recall him saying "we lost the fuel pump" and had to flip a toggle switch to activate the backup, this saved us many times on that trip!
@@Mre942 apparently the risk of asbestos actually comes from the breaks, tyres don’t, and rarely did, contain asbestos, which makes sense since asbestos is mostly used for its thermal properties.
engine sound is like Donald Duck))))) i dont understand 90 % of speeсh, but it is so interesting to watch this video! Subscribe and like! im from Russia, sorry for my English)))
I love this VW Can but what I did on mine, it was first I removed and clean the Gas tank! New gas filter, clean and check gas pomp !them new hoses! New spark plugs cables, coil, battery! Brakes, carburetor clean etc, after all, I did in my Van I try to turn the engine on! First, try works like new
Thank you for saving another VW Bus. I hope that he will leave the garage with his own wheels...My dad have 77' combi Bus....that's a good car.... Greetings from Poland.... :)
I had one running about 7 years ago so it should be ready to go. Gotta fill the washer fluid . I suggest spraying the ignition key and locks. Porsche seats, of course.

My father had such a VW original camper. When i drove it on some journeys i always like the acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear. He always maintained it well.
Man! That winch cable was singing like a guitar string on that second try, I was blinking, wincing and turning away, couldn't help it!
John Gerson Same for me, found it sort of hard to trust it wouldn't break. Just imagine what havoc it could wreak...
Man, me too..this is why i bought a remote control and the balistic nylon cable replacement...wire cable freaks me out when it starts singing.....
He should have doubled the cable and used several blankets to cover the cables
About 3 octaves above middle-C!!!
at least they knew to put a blanket over the winch line.
35:13 oh yeah, those good old days when we had asbestos brakes...
watching that made me cough
Noticed that to..........
I am so glad I live in the southwest. I use to work on eastern rust buckets, no fun.
Dude. You need an electric winch. That's a nice trailer and worth the investment. Love the van!! Looks like most of the original insides are there.
has one now
We just dont have vehicles like this abandoned in the UK, and nobody noticing. The vastness of America has its plus points !
Ernie Flannel I love this comment
the vastness of america is one of the smallest plus points
Plenty here in Ireland, clean out a garden a while back that had a split window bus under the brambles?
youll find many up in the north

Careful though the engine might drop out the bottom when you blow those leaves out
I own a 1990 car VW Tip25 (T3). Gasoline. It's just a buzz! From Russia-with love!
He just didn't really give up huh, it pays anyway. Thumbs up
That is one beautiful bus you got yourself.
انا احب هاذا النوع من الفيديو هات استمر انا من سوريا
You know they had asbestos brakes back then.
I was literally yelling NOOOO! when you breathed that shit in.
You don't get many second chances with that stuff.
He literally said "dont breath that" while he was blowing it out
I would be wearing gloves when exploring the inside, because of Rats and what little presents they leave behind..Weil's disease isn't very nice.
Hantavirus
Best vw channel love this tipe of vidios!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Needed two showers after watching this
Three with pinesol!
And a tetanus shot
Ocd
well he officially has 100,000 miles on the motor, and 500,000 on the starter.
VHS or Beta
Giving the throttle some pumpage is a good idea though when starting an engine that hasn't run for a while.
VHS or Beta That’s how you start an old engine idiot!
Nigel 900 starters can take a beating
18:31 I actually thought to myself...he is going to need a block of wood for leverage.
Have lived and worked in many states on vw buses, have own ed 7 diff types of bus all years, beetles, superbeetle bajas,Carmens, worked every national park with one have a question about vw I probably know about it
Nice
Thanks for the video Mustie1. Looking forward to watch the next video.
I don't know where everybody was standing but if that cable would have snapped it would wrapped around somebody and cut them in half it would have been a bad day in paradise for somebody
woah safety sal its 1500-2500lb cable far less energy than the 10k-25k cable trucks use nobodys getting cut in half
no loss. These guys destroyed sacred metal. The Volkswagen was restorable and they designated it a parts car.
@@Chemist9662 you're high, or desperate, that thing was GONE
@@Chemist9662 No. The body, MAYBE, but once the frame is so thin you can knock it out with your finger, there's no hope.
it brings tears to my eyes my father had the exact model back in the 70s I was around 13 years old.
Rob Zone wow is he still alive
Kidvette2004 yes he is alive in our hearts. We love him so much and his vehicle
durga dandem oh that’s beautiful
I love his determination to get it running before the video ends amazing! I was rooting for her too lol
When u just realize u have spent 1hr and 13 minutes of ur life watching this video including part2
*starts engine *kills it *walks up to camera "Heh!" *Starts it again 😂😂
Great memories, I used to have one, I gave it away, just because the engine gave up. Crazy.
Not a bad price for a decent engine and some miscellaneous parts. Good luck with the engine.
*Sounds like an old John Deere tractor*
Interesting how this old machine is fighting for its second life. Good luck with the restoration!
My Dad had a car lot for 35yrs.The VW's wouldn't start on a 60 degree morning !
Never buy a car from a man that can't get an air cooled VW started.
diesels
This is giving me Lost vibes. The van is also about the same age as the van that they fixed in Lost.
1983 my father set up a backup fuel filter in our VW Bus, on a trip across the country, I recall him saying "we lost the fuel pump" and had to flip a toggle switch to activate the backup, this saved us many times on that trip!
Just so you know, you shuld never dust of old brakes with pressure air if you don't wear any breath protection, they will most likely contains asbest.
broken english to the extreme
@@ChrisBlagdonIsABoss probably from my phone, but you understand anyway, that's the importent part xD
Don't apologize! Your English is better than that of the American youth today. ;)
Thanks!
Ya bro u good at English
Good thing the raccoon that left his prints wasn't under the seat! Love these vids.
@18:50 thought you got hit in the face there, had to do a slowmo replay.
my quick animal like reflexes saved me
Mustie1 did you guys steal it
O'rourke Clips he payd 200
Found one of those in a wooded clearing one time years ago that had a bunch of dead hippies in it.
First, try works like new
In a shop - yes - even in my driveway or at the curb. BUT man they are in the dirt
Thank you for saving another VW Bus. I hope that he will leave the garage with his own wheels...My dad have 77' combi Bus....that's a good car....
Greetings from Poland.... :)
Zakapturzony Dżony he is using it for parts...
Eye protection? Nitrile gloves? Jacques Cousteau diving bell for protection from witches brew spraying out of brake drum?
Eric Mumford a little asbestos dust never hurt anyone! Hell, Kent cigarettes used asbestos in their filters for a cooler smoke back in the 60s!
Nice....
You'll be rv ing in no time.
Nothing a couple cans of rattle can paint with a few coats of wax won't fix.
Let the fun begin.
Was this this morning?
A lot of cool stuff has been on that trailer.
friday we got it
Hey, do you ever come to the west coast (Of Mass that is?) There is a sonnet for sale in North Adams Mass if you are ever in that neck of the woods.
still less rust than my 2009 sprinter.
Smell the weed
Man, those Sprinters are completely rotted out within 5 years, at least in my area.
Must be like the Ram trucks. Sheet metal is so thin, there is no such thing as surface rust. Once you see any rust, that's it. No metal left.
I had one running about 7 years ago so it should be ready to go. Gotta fill the washer fluid . I suggest spraying the ignition key and locks. Porsche seats, of course.
