When a museum wants your work, you have graduated from gear head to artist. Congratulations, Mustie1.
How true.
the curator said it right: "the person behind it is the *real* story."
Made me so sad listening to the story behind crusty
I couldn't understand what this comment meant until the end. LOL. Curator? Hahaha
Yeah so true
Hats off to Mustie for two things:
For opening his heart to us about this old truck; and,
For putting his old truck into a great place that will allow us to go and take a look at it!
Mustie should be proud to have his work displayed in this automotive museum. It goes to show the quality of work that he does.
Mustie, I initially had a little sadness, then you explained some of the sadness you were carrying and I had a little moment with you man. And then I realised how lucky I am to have found your channel out and how fortunate we all are that you share everything with us.
You are a really, really good dude, and I love ya 😽
Mustie has gotten me through some tough times and has resparked my interest in the Volkswagens. I have a shiny restored bus and my patina VW truck just like him and I am proud of it.
Great script, great acting, great plot twist
You couldn't have said it better, this was a great segment....................
Mustie has shown the world of back burner projects that no matter how bad a project progresses there is always a way to finish it...
Nailed it right on the head. Very well said.
I never heard a man talk more honest about what wrenching with friends and a project meant to him .
Now I understand . Thank you Musti1 for taking us along. That was bittersweet but beautiful !
Crusty is what brought me to this channel. It was always a nice reminder when seeing it in the background.
WOW!!! What an honor and a privilege for you to have "Crusty" on display at the Lars Anderson Auto Museum!
“You’re repairing the vehicle and you’re repairing yourself at the same time” - Mustie1 ❤️
Ain't it true; surely for many of us here. Thanks Mustie, for putting it so well. (and for making such dang fine material for us)
@M DC Beautifully said, Mustie1
"Repairing the truck and repairing yourself at the same time". This.
Amen.
Non-car people never quite understand how classic motor vehicles can get under your skin. Not sure we will feel the same in 40 years time about 'classic Teslas'.
Crusty brought me here... I have been here ever since. HOW MANY YEARS AGO???? Wow!
Thank you Mustie1. Not just for the video but letting us into a part of your life that is so emotional, sacred and humbling of yourself.
WOW , what emotions were coursing through you when you drove Crusty through that door and under that sign? A VERY proud friend moment right there for me and I’m happy you had Brian there to share it with. I am Stoked for you and I CAN NOT wait to see it with my own eyes soon .
@@Joesrustbuckets and push it home lol
I thought at 1st, Crusty was heading your way Jason :)
"Repairing myself as I repaired the truck". I felt that, Mustie.
Bye Crusty, We will miss you. I remember watching you come back to life and you have been awesome.
Outstanding, For Crusty to be included in an Americana Exhibit, You saved Him from being a lost and forgotten pile of rust!! Congrads Sir!!
"you're repairing the vehicle, and repairing yourself at the same time"
I didn't realize that you were getting krusty back after a year. First i was sad and now am back to happy.
Yeah talk about an emotional roller coaster! ;-)
I can relate. The pride isn't driving around your "project vehicle". It's what it took, to achieve that goal. How many times, have WE sat on the milk crate, behind the wheel of our project, and yearn for that feeling of accomplishment. Everybody's first vehicle wasn't the prettiest but, you felt like a million bucks. And now, it's time for renewing that feeling, again. Thanks for the ride Darren.
EDIT: Oh ! You got me, real good....Dammit !
At first I was devastated... then I was consoled by the destination... and then realized we were bamboozled sir! Well done!
Everyone: "It belongs in a museum!"
Mustie1: "I belong in a museum!"
Imagine your projects turning out so well that they end up in a museum. Everything about this is wonderful.
I grew up in a 73 sports beetle. Went with my dad to pick it up at the dealership when I was 6. The ringing sound of that old VW engine brings me back every time I hear it.
Everytime i see crusty it reminds me of my dad, he was a mechanic and worked mainly on T3's but also T2 and a few T1's. He passed away '99.
Now I am laughing because all the people who did not watch until the end think Crusty was sold. I will admit, you had me thinking the same.
yeah
maybe some of us were just playing along to add to the Drama 😂
shhhhhh, make 'em watch...
Oops. I read this before I finished watching the video!
So for the next year, road-side lawn mowers and snow blowers get to ride to their new home in a modern vehicle? Feels strange...
*A museum would be a fitting forever pension for Crusty but getting to share its goodness for a year is still an appropriate vacation.*
To be displayed at a museum is such an honor, feel proud you should be.
Some of family members were displayed in an art museum a few years ago we had 4 generations of artwork displayed in a wing of the museum. From famous pottery from my great grandfather to my father with oil paintings and niece with watercolors paintings that have been displayed at the Prada in Madrid Spain.
Glad your not getting rid of crusty
I’ve watched you since day one and I’ve never heard you open up like this before. I got very emotional listening to this Mr. D. Thank you for sharing the background on krusty and your personal experience.
Jay Leno says we don’t really own these cars as much as we are the caretakers for the next guy And some day someone will be the next caretaker glad you see you kept it
Yes, we live in a 1774 house as only the fifth “caretakers”.
Well said, great comment!
Says the guy who owns hundreds of cars that literally add up to tens of millions of dollars combined.
Unless you put the car for scrape because both the engine and transmission died on you, thus isn't worth the money to get it fixed.
Yeah, I had that happen to me. The body and frame were great, but the engine and transmission decided to die on me. Well, the engine was getting ready to die when the transmission died. It had rod knock. Still technically saveable if you had the expertise and equipment to tear the engine apart and such...but for someone like me who is homeless....yeah not really possible.
She is going to love being in the lime light of the museum , but she's sure as hell going to miss you
and being out in the field working. Thanks for the heartfelt ......
While listening to your story about the VW I began to feel quite sad. The truck seemed to be such an important part of your life and a fixture of the video's. I felt relieved when the end of the video came to light. Good of you to make her available for the public to see.
Well I was close to tears until you said it’s only staying for a year and in all honesty, I had my doubts you’d part company with it. The history behind the truck and yourself will have people in awe. Great video mustie 😉
I hope you’ll take us on a tour of the museum with Crusty in her place once it all gets set up!
Wow!!! That's quite the honor!!! I watched the whole playlist in this build a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Congrat's on being recognized!! 👍 🛠⚙️
This happy little truck is an Internet icon. Makes me feel proud to be a fan and a subscriber!
That vehicle is so much a part of your channel...I've grown a little older, along with it, as the years have pasted enjoying your content. Sure made me a little sad to see that Rusty Krusty might be going to a new home. Thanks for the back story/insight. Your bravery to show your human side is one of the reasons I, and probably for so many others, love your channel. Congratulations on the honor of being selected to have one of your "master pieces" put on display. That's so awesome!
makes me sad like everyone is even though it's yours and you were gracious enough to pack us all along for the ride I guess we sorta feel like it's partly ours lol --we can still go back in the videos when we think we can take the pain once again lol---your channel is one of the very first that caught my my interest when I first started watching youtube and I've never been disapointed never a bad video and never rude or crude---thanks for all you share with us and give ole crusty's horn a good honk for us all
You had me concerned there for a minute. I'm glad it's being honored and displayed. But it's nice to know you aren't parting with it.
At 4:20, while Mustie empties the "treasure chest" into a container in preparation for shipping Crusty, you see the cursed masks we've all had to endure. Great historical markers for a time we all would like to forget! Anyway, think about this - one of Mustie's 'rescues' is now on display in a museum. Can't think of a better level of recognition of your work, Mustie!
I vividly remember how much I enjoyed "hangin' out with you and doin' a bit of wrenchin' on Crusty." And how much I admired your skill and ability as you brought him back from near death.
You got me in the feels mate, I 100% understand and get what your talking about, and it’s so good to see someone be genuine and share a part of themselves with the world
What a sad but beautiful story! All the best from Christchurch New Zealand!
It's people like you that made America great! You have my deepest respect!
My daughter lives a mile or so from that museum I am definitely going to go see Crusty!
Crusty should be an easy find in the museum, just close your eyes and walk toward the Mustie bar chain oil smell
Don't forget the bleach smell ;-)
Don’t forget the wax toilet rings.
It’s hard to say goodbye to some old friends. Thank you for all your content sir
Nice to see a collector sharing his unique collection
Mustie, you had me a little worried sir. Took me through that whole story thinking you were selling crusty. I’m glad he’s only on loan.
When I read the title I said “Oh Nooooo”, not Crusty! Now that I understand that it is a loan to a museum for a year I think it’s great that more people will be able to see Crusty. Congratulations, not very many people have a car (or truck) on display in a nice museum.
I hope the museum display includes the videos of you doing this art.
@@johnhudson333 i totally agree
Crusty is a fantastic creation. You deserve a PhD in Wrenching! You are my Favorite you tube channel. I have learned so much from you. if the civilization ends I hope I’m your neighbor. You are the kind of person who will be able to make the world work again.
Mustie and crustie you two are a pair. Congratulations on the exhibit. You bring a lot of happiness two all us gearheads thanks for the videos
Cool! Crusty gets the summer off to hang out with the fancy cars in a carriage barn! I’ll have to go visit him sometime this summer. Thanks for sharing Crusty with us and for sharing the beautiful story.
The museum is very luck to have old Crusty. I wonder how many people will go to the museum because of Crusty (like me!), that would never have gone otherwise. I look forward to seeing it in person.
I’ve loved every episode of the Crusty story, and now learning some of the back story makes it even better. So many people think cars are just for transportation, but for a few of us, they are really vehicles for our experiences. Thanks Mustie1!
That was not a rant Darren, that was real.
Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration.
Awesome story. Ty for sharing and I'm so glad you just loaned it out!!
I found this channel many years ago because of Crusty and Mustie! Congratulations sir!
funny to see you here. you are great
CT ❤️
I found your channel because of Mustie1, CT! Looking forward to seeing Rusty on the road!
You keep popping up in my feed CT, it seems I should watch more of your stuff! 8-))
Me too CT this started it all for me
So if one of mustie1s projects is in a museum does that make him an ARTIST? I think so.
Hoovie's Garage had one of his cars in a museum, but it was the "Pimp My Ride" Grand Voyager, which looked like a disco ball on wheels. Crusty will me much better to view in a museum: No need to wear sunglasses to avoid the glare!
His bikes were already proof of that.
It makes him a historical figure.
@@luvr381 Was thinking the same thing. Just look at his bikes
@@luvr381 I know but he hasn't made one in a while....
You should be honored to have your truck on display. Well done.
Just listening to you talk takes me back to a better time in our great country. I needed that! Thanks
Crustie is the coolest VW I’ve ever seen. Good on you Mustie for sharing it.
Darren, you are a true artist. Your artwork deserves to be in a Museum. Congratulations Sir!!
Thank you for sharing your story about Crusty. Thank you for letting know how much heart went into the restore. I'm glad to see that Crusty is now on display for everyone. Nice "plot twist" at the end. :-)
the museum is such a gorgeous building
Mustie1 with the tease Man!!
I was almost in tears!!! Lol!
Continue to inspire, motivate and teach us, Darren. This story resonates with many of us. Thanks for sharing the full story.
What a great addition to the museum, awesome of you to save a piece of history!
I know the feeling of sadness when working on something also. My best friend passed in December of 17. We did all kinds of projects and things together. He passed from colon cancer. I had taken him to his doctor appointments, chemo and radiation therapy. Everytime I got a phone call from him and hear him say, Pat, you doing anything? You feel like doing a little project? Well, his "little" projects turned out to be big ones. I enjoyed every minute of it. We built three trailers. I did all the welding and together we both did the measuring and cutting. We worked on his truck and vehicles along with my truck and tractors. I have a vial of his ashes that I have hanging on the rear view mirror of my daily driver. Anytime I needed help he was just a phonecall away, just like I was for him. God only knows how many pots of coffee we went through or how many trips to the local burger joint we made while working on projects at my house or his.
I hope people appreciate the hard work that went into putting crusty back on the road who visit that museum. I watched the whole rebuild series years ago and I enjoyed every minute of it. Good luck Mustie you’ll have him back soon enough a year goes by pretty quickly.
I gotta tell you, I was a little bummed that someone was going to "restore" her. But seeing her new home, it seems the perfect place. There are different kinds of "beauty". She is beautiful.
Yeah but at least he's not selling it, and will get it back next April after the exhibition is finished.
I was like.. hhhhey - that building looks like.. OMG it IS! congrats Mustie! what an honor!
Wow, your story about your friend hit me right in the feels. Thanks for telling us the story!
That was quite the compliment with Crusty being included in the museum
About every 10 years your life will completely change.
Your interests, your friends... & quite a lot of other stuff along the way!
"It's about the journey yes ?"
How true that is.
D App ....... Yes it has. Yet some hang on to that love for certain vehicles and people. There are things that can't be replaced but the memories live on forever.
After seeing the title of the video I just could not watch it right then. Too many mixed feelings. Couldn’t believe it was true. Finally decided to watch after crawling into bed for the night. Have to admit I was happy to notice the first comments that showed. But that didn’t stop the heart strings from being pulled while hearing about Crusty & Mustie restoring each other. Crusty most certainly deserves to be in that fancy building & admired by all that pass through. And I sure hope the Mustie1 story is included with the display because the two go hand in hand. ❤️
❤️ CONGRATS to Crusty & Mustie! All of us love you both! ❤️
Unfortunately, life is sometimes about those gone. Ours goes on anyway. How we rebuild our lives afterwards is hard. Now I see, what once was lost. Thank you, Darren. Simply Grand, Sir !
Great video. I'm glad It's not going anywhere. Thank you for sharing such an intimate look into what a project really means to you.
such a sad story but such a happy ending with Crusty coming back....
Glad to see it go to a temporary new home where your rusteration skills will be on display!
Sounds very much like as a by product of you rescuing the truck, it helped in some way to rescue you. It’s lovely that the story goes back so far and means so much. 👍🏻
Just went to Mustie church. Amen brother, he’ll of a sermon this morning sir. Loved it and have lived it.
Lol same
its getting serious, we got those mid week services now.
Well this was a bit of a roller-coaster ride. Started out as a real downer, and came to a satisfying end. All those other vehicles over there are going to be in good (Crusty) company.
This was your therapy truck 🥰 very interesting story. Sure had a long history with you, you saved it ♥️
OMG! I was putting off watching this video, because I didn't want to see Crusty go, but when I saw you pull in behind Larz Anderson my heart soared! I will be their Sunday for German Day and cannot wait to see Crusty in person! Thanks Darren for sharing this VW with us!
Crusty has been one of the best and most interesting projects you've done. I still go back and watch some of the videos every now and then just because I enjoyed it so much. Thanks 👍
So it's not just me then? So, Darren, we're the reason you are still earning residuals on the Crusty content! I just recently re-watched (for about the 10th time) the first start on Crusty's original motor, complete with getting shot by rust!
When you were bringing crusty back to life bet you never thought she would be on exhibit in a automotive museum. =)
LARZ ANDERSON MUSEUM is not just any Museum. Brookline!
I noticed that Checker in the background when you pulled into the museum. Those too were fantastic on so many levels!
Never would have thought you'd sell Crusty. Love your videos, keep them coming.
Crusty did not only help you through sad times, but it also bought more people to your channel! It deserves to be in a museum for a year :)
Didn't think he was selling it, every time he drives it he has a smile from ear to ear. You don't get rid of something that you have some much of yourself in it
I did sell a few vehicles I regretted later. It took me five years to get my old '55 Chevy wagon back. It's not the wagon, it's the memories whenever I see it.
Try watching the video. He hasnt sold it. hes loaning it until end of spring next year when he gets it back
@@23bobjr I always watch all videos to the end. Maybe you were answering to someone else. Many vehicles in museums are on loan. It gives more people a chance to see things they'd never see and cleans out a garage space for more junk.
Im soo happy your not getting rid of crusty I was so sad when I saw the video thumbnail the trucks worth more in memories than in money. Your friend lives on in every machine you bring back to life love your videos keep up the great work
What a wonderful honest heartfelt story of how Krusty got you thru a tough time in your life!
You fooled us, thought crusty was gone forever.Crusty has a great but sad story for healing you Darren in your loss of your friend. So glad that you will be getting her or him back.
How about a life size cardboard statue of you next to Crusty...The Man,the myth,Mustie 1.Glad to see it's only on loan.Detroit👁👁
I wish I could find something like that great job getting life back to it very very 👍
i thought you sold it!!!! i was in tears. when crusty hit the museum floor and the lights drew down on her it was like seeing it transform from utility crusty dirty truck to magnificent work of art that took my breath away. thank you so much
Now a year later you can claim in driving a museum piece!
Awesome Darren, for a moment I was sad because I thought the truck was going to sit idly for eternity collecting dust. Also beautiful story-telling. Priceless truck.
WOW! a museum piece it is a rare VW I knew it is a rare one WHAT a beautiful restoration by your hands
If the guy from the lumberyard was shocked to see their old truck on your channel, he’s gonna be all _mind blown_ when he finds out it’s in a museum 😆
I must admit you got me i actually felt a bit sad i thought our little crusty was going and had visions of someone painting her and putting stupid wheels etc on old crusty. She's in the perfect place and im glad she's doing such a good thing but sad she's gone on holiday and we won't see her for a bit. Stay safe crusty we love you
