  • In this video I take you along as I paint this custom 1968 Camaro for my buddy Jim from start to finish. We have been restoring this Camaro for the last 3 years. Every panel has been replaced and it has full ‪@detroitspeed‬ suspension and mini tubs. The color is a Chrysler passion red in DBC base coat with DCU2002 clear.

    Just a tip/ friendly advise. Don’t spray half the panel. Spray the full panel and run the perimeter first. Spraying half and half you end up with a double layer of paint where you joined them. It’s also possible on some metallics and pearls to see it in the paint. You want a nice steady consistent flow across the whole panel. That way it’s all on the same coat and there’s no seam of paint overlap. You want it to flow perfectly with no breaks in the direction of the paint flow. Also a push and pull method works really well to help avoid orange peal and overspray. Start from one side of the car at the bottom and work your way up to the roof. Start from other side of roof and pull the paint down. That way it’s not letting overspray directly fall on fresh paint you just laid. Paint didn’t turn out too bad on the car though. Love the color!

      While good advice not necessarily true! Ever heard or Blending? Happens everyday in every paint booth on the planet! Ur basically saying if U start at the bottom of a car n pull your wet line all the way over the top U have no overlap! Also NOT TRUE! About the only time I would entirely agree with that is if U are spraying Candy! With that being said it isn't a bad idea to spray every job as if it were candy. Basecoat clear coat it just isn't that critical. N He did a good job!

Motor oil went next, wheel bearing grease on motor slide, belt still good, have printed schematic for this 30 year old Maytag pair and discovered the “Truth” table on timer/reed switch assembly and figured it out. Never made sense as they use circle on switch 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14. The timer shows T/C & B/C but 3 rows of 8 contacts. Hit me like a ton of feathers. Got the Fluke 87-5 out and found it means top contacts to center, Bottom row of contacts to middle. Colors matched & wires are inked with markings on schematic. Hey I was wondering why did you put in the captions paint your car at home?? it's clearly not at home?? it's in a paint booth, Isn't that kind of wrong to say are you trying to get people just to watch your videos?????

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  День назад

      No its at home, it's a paint booth made out of plywood a d 2x4s, paint booths don't make the paint job alot of prep and time does. All a booth does is keep trash out of the paint.

    How to PAINT your Muscle Car (at HOME)1968 Camaro Show Car if you have a paint booth or a garage

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  Год назад

      Ive painted cars outside you just have more buffing to do, but it can be done. My first hotrod was painted on a open concrete pad and actually turned out pretty good. All a booth does is control the atmosphere.

    When you are sweeping on a large panel area, are you lifting your trigger finger, or do you keep it flowing and sweep off and back with trigger depressed.

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  Месяц назад

      I just let off the fluid and keep the air flowing, kinda like a half trigger pull the when I come back to the pannel I go back to full trigger till I get to the end again.

    I have a 1969 camaro that I'm going to paint it will be metallic on the roof do I have to make one pass from the front to back or if I do like half then the other half how far do I over lap so I do not get any tiger stripes and same thing on the sides thanks Bob.

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching, It tends to work better to go from front to back because when you stop it can cause a build up where you start and stop. I like your idea on the roof. I personally would start spraying in the middle of the roof spraying from front wind sheild to rear and work your way twords the outside of the roof, then go to the other side and start in the middle where you've already sprayed then work your way out tword you. I do like 3 coats or till covered the turn down your pressure a little and just kinda fog the last coat your gun should be around 1ft. From the pannel on this coat, (aka) drop coat and it will even out your metallics.

    Awesome job!!! I see that you didn't jams first, is that just a preference or dempends on the job? I see some guys have the hood, doors and trunk off and painted off the car, is that just a preference as well? Where do you get the paint gun at?

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you!!! Alot depends on the type job. Most of the time I jamb it first then put it together which alows touch up. Then I wetsand the jambs and leave the doors shut while I spray color on the rest of the car then on the last coat of clear I open the jambs and spray the whole car with clear including the jambs and leave all the doors open till it drys. This leaves zero tape lines. Just for full custom jobs.I got the paint gun from @motivatedpainters on youtube.

    Looks great I keep seeing first Gen cameros being painted really makes me miss my old 69 RS/SS big block that I asked my parents to sell when I was headed to Bosnia in 1982 as a young Marine … what a mistake I should have just had it stored until I retired in 2011 …. Question why didn’t you paint under the deck lid and hood ?
    I think if I was to do one now I would have it done on a rotisserie with a frame off paint job so the bottom could be painted as well I know it is a lot of work but it’s well worth it finding an old muscle car in good condition with no body filler is very difficult these days I’ve been looking

    As a painter myself and I'm certainly not a pro and in my opinion you're a pro but why didn't you do door jams and all that trim work first and then prep the body for paint and paint just the body?? That's alot of spraying at one time and alot of work to keep up with and worrying about shutting a door on wet paint etc etc and man what a beautiful color and car

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  2 года назад +2

      Thank you!!! What I do is jamb the car out then back tape the door and usually just spray one coat of clear on the door jambs on the last coat so there are no tape lines.

    I have a tangent thought, if you stuck a car on a rotisserie and had it rotate at the center of mass and then just painted the whole thing in one go; would this work? I've never painted a car before... But I plan on doing it at some point in the future and wanted to know if the thought I had would work or would it just be overly complicated and unnecessary.

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  2 года назад +2

      Yes you could, we usually paint the underside of the body on the rotisserie, it makes it eaiser, if you look back in my channel you'll see a video of me raptor lining the bottom of this 68, its easy to put the body shell on the rotisserie but its a pain to do the whole car on there, but it can be done. I Usually paint the car apart but its challenging to put back together with out scratching stuff unless you have a bunch of people helping you. With the way I did on this video is alot of taping, but you dont have to put it together lol, hope this helps, thanks for watching!!!!

    • @ACDesignsGarage

      It looks more fancy than it is lol. The booth is made out of plywood and 2x4s, the shacker is one someone was throwing away and my gun was like $300.00 . You dont need all that if your painting one car but I paint a couple a year.
