  • Remember my New York City Trip Report? ( • TRIP REPORT - United A... ) This is from the same trip, but in the opposite direction. I'm not in the habit of filming both directions of a trip unless there's special circumstances. In this case, there certainly were. The first half of this video is pretty much made up of ground transportation. While I was picked up by car on my trip out to NYC, on this return trip I needed to take public transit. This made for quite an adventure. It involved the subway, Penn Station, NJ Transit, and the Newark Airtrain. Of course, the flight was pretty cool too (particularly the evening departure over Newark and landing at dusk in St. Louis). This trip has a totally different feel than the trip going out, so I hope you enjoy it!

    Jacob, this is a really cool video. Especially when you included the Njtransit train and the Newark airport airtrain. I take the Njtransit train to NYC from Long Branch to either go see a doctor or just to hang out. And I absolutely adore the airtrain. Don't you?

    NJT used to have a train called ACES (Atlantic City Express Service) that ran from Atlantic City to NYC and they had those exact seats except these seats reclined and the train had only 1 stop at NWK Penn. I miss this train because it cut a 4 hr trip with 2 transfers to a 2hr 30 mins trip with no transfer. The Casinos in AC had to stop it because everyone was going from AC To NY not NY to AC.

    Cool how you got to fly one of the ERJ's without winglets on the way back. I wonder why some of the ERJ's have winglets and others don't

    • @robertstilwell4048
      @robertstilwell4048 9 лет назад

      My understanding is that winglets are used to improve lift on older wing designs (B737 series, ERJ 170/190). Since planes such as the ERJ 135/145 and MD-80 are aerodynamically optimized for their ranges/roles, they don't need winglets. Please let me know if you would like me to explain more.

    • @hellasius9449
      @hellasius9449 9 лет назад

      Winglets are built on a plane if they need the lift for takeoff such as a heavy aircraft like the Airbus beluga. Engineers had to put winglets on the airframe because the aircraft was just simply too heavy.

    • @Southwest737
      @Southwest737 9 лет назад +2

      Ok, here's the answer from a pilot. Winglets improve the aerodynamic capabilities of a plane. Winglets can be installed on pretty much any aircraft. What winglets do is they disrupt the wake turbulence on aircraft. Wake turbulence is caused by air flowing from the bottom of the wing near the wing tip (where the pressure is lowest) up and over the wing tip to the top of the wing. As the airplane travels forward this air moving up and over the wing tip causes a vortex motion behind the aircraft, which can actually be quite dangerous to aircraft following behind. The winglet, although it doesn't get rid of the wake entirely, it does somewhat disrupt the airflow. This results in better fuel efficiency (less drag from the wake) and decreased waiting times between takeoff and landing (other airplanes have to wait a couple of minutes to allow the wake to disburse. Sorry for the lengthy response but I hope this answers your question.

    Quicker way to get to Newark Airport is walk to 42nd Street and take the Newark Airport bus, which runs every 15 minutes. Takes about 20 minutes total and drops you off in front of your airline's ticket counter. No need to pay or wait for the subway or the Air train. BTW, you entered the Uptown C/E at 50th. The Downtown is across the street, not another level down. Any downtown train stops at 34th St.

    Thanks for another great video. The time of your flight was quite nice due to the lighting etc. Any chance you could show your inflight food/beverage service? How do you like flying the regional type jets versus mainline types?

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад +1

      JC Baily I typically skip the food/beverage because I just get a cup of water or coffee. Might be a different story if I fly to Europe or something. I think that regional jets can be fun sometimes, though I end up on them a little more often than I'd like. I have a strong preference for Embraer (ERJ-145 and the new E-jets) over Bombardier CRJs, though I love the turboprops that Bombardier makes (the Dash 8 line).

    So I booked this one flight on United from MKE to FLL but I'll be connecting in EWR from an E145 to a 737-800 and I got a 90 minute connection. Would I have to reenter security if that was the case as of how this airport is laid out?

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  8 лет назад

      Your ERJ will likely arrive at Terminal A and your 737 will leave from Terminal C. There's a bus that runs behind security connecting A and C, so no need to go through again. The stairs down to the bus can be a little tough to spot, so make sure you familiarize yourself with the terminal layout in advance. Note the bus route on this map: www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/airport/maps/ewr.aspx I did the same connection a few months ago with less time easily. No reason to worry.

    • @SirensAndElevators
      @SirensAndElevators 8 лет назад

      Okay thanks. I don't think IAH will be a problem either then as I connect there on my return trip with a 2 and a half hour connection

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  8 лет назад

      *****
      IAH is a lot more straightforward. They have an above ground train that connects all of the terminals behind security. I tend to ride it back and forth a few times when I'm bored since it offers great views of the airfield. EWR has an above ground train as well, but it's outside of security (which is why they run that bus behind security).

    • @SirensAndElevators
      @SirensAndElevators 8 лет назад

      Well I did the bus stop yesterday as I flew MKE-EWR-FLL yesterday but things didn't do well for me. I missed my connection and both flights I was on were both two hours late due to a worn tire for the E145 and the pilots weren't there on my new connecting flight which was another 737-800 but with split scrimitar winglets. And I was on standby for a flight in between but that one was cancelled. Overall I'm starting to not really like United.

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  8 лет назад

      ***** Sorry to hear that! United has the most unreliable operation of the big 3, so I can't say that I'm shocked. I've had some silly experiences, but I've never missed a connection in my dozens of times on United. One of my favorite United stories happened to me on a late-night ERJ-145 flight out of Dulles. It was one of those gates where 5 planes share 1 door, and they board multiple flights at once. The first time we boarded, no one could figure out which of the ERJs was going to St. Louis. In other words, passengers were wandering around the tarmac getting on planes and asking where they were going. It was hilarious. Eventually, they called us all back inside and started boarding over again. The second time, we all got on the right plane only to discover that it had a tire with low pressure. We all got off so they could do repairs. So yes, we boarded the same flight 3 TIMES. I took it with a sense of humor.

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад

      bushyconn Most (all?) NYC subway stations have elevators available for disabled people. They just might not be in the most convenient place. They also tend to be pretty dirty and crowded, hence why I didn't ride any in this video.

    • @LIRR175
      @LIRR175 9 лет назад

      ***** Only a fraction of stations have elevators for the disabled. But the busiest mostly do, and both Penn/Grand Central are ADA accessible.

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад +1

      LIRR175 That's surprising. I really assumed it would be a necessity on such a busy system. Guess it's difficult and expensive to retrofit elevators into stations that are ~100 years old.
