TRIP REPORT - American (ERJ-145), St Louis to Richmond

- It's trip report time! This is the first report I've produced since ending my relationship with Maker Studios in March, so it presented some challenges. I had to find a new way of licensing music and, as a result, had to restructure the intro and other elements that haven't changed in years. I used it as an opportunity to rethink everything, adding in more commentary and airport footage to capture the soul of my earlier trip reports. I'm pretty pleased with the result, but please let me know what you think!
Highlights include:
-Early morning (pre-sunrise) footage on the ground at STL
-Awesome takeoff at dawn
-Amazing New York City scenery on approach to LGA
-TONS of terminal footage and spotting at LGA
-A new (to me) airport: RIC

You have the best trip report videos period, thanks for sharing
UltimateDisneyFan28 I think he's tied with Simply aviation. Though he does have more than just Planes
One of the best videos I have seen of Richmond and the Hamptons roads tunnel.
I love the A seats on an ERJ-145. One of the few planes where you can have a window seat and an aisle seat at the same time
this is my favorite aircraft , so cute and ellagant and sleek
Awesome video!!! I saw several glimpses of Southwest planes in this one!!!!
Very nicely done. I hate how Maker Max left us.. but of course it gives us the chance to try something new!
Amy Rose took the Northeast Regional Train 95 from Philadelphia 30th Street Station to Richmond Staples Mill Road Station in which then continued to Newport News, ACS-64 621 to Washington DC Union Station and P42DC 124 to Richmond Staples Mill Road Station. Mrs. Rosslyn, her Nana, chose business class because she works at Oracle and booked the entire Richmond Trip on Amtrak.
Awesome trip report! Love the LGA spotting and the new music! Definitely a big like!
Another great trip report. And just seeing the preview of it, I'll bet your motel room tour will be a barrel of laughs, lol.
WOW, felt like I was going to Madrid...Nice job with the video!
I think all your videos are top notch!! Big fan here.
More than an hour on an ERJ-145 is pretty much torture.
I love when you fly to VA, keep comming here. I will go right to Norfolk international airport and watch you land!
Live in Richmond…Never knew there were any direct flights to St. Louis. Planning a trip to St. Louis and only direct flights I could find regionally were out of DC
Man I look forward to these! I miss STL
Nice trip report. I like the difference between this one and the last
Great music and of course your narration voice is legendary!
KRIC My old stomping grounds....Flew in and out of there quite a few times.....Kind of a No-Frills airport, but considering it shares the field with the Air National Guard once in a while you get some interesting aircraft coming in and out......Also seen the US Gov't 757 (Usually flies with the VP as Air Force Two) do some touch and go's every once in a while
great trip report. earliest i woke up is 0500. this was for a bus from Umass Amherst to Greenfield. route has since shortened to start at Sunderland.
Great video.
Nice approach to LGA. At 14 :10 the Throgs Neck Bridge in background, At 14:50, Bronx Whitestone Bridge, at 15:00, Rikers Island Prison complex as you approach and land at Runway 22. Very cool!
In the 1980s, it was often referred to as ‘LaGarbage’
Your takeoff from LGA was on runway 13, yet taking the route north before turning west then south over the Hudson river. Probably to avoid planes from JFK whose runways are aligned the same as LGA. Going southeast, then north, then west and finally south.
31:15 Throgs Neck Bridge again.
Excellent views of NYC and the complicated approaches into all airports to keep the traffic apart from all the busy airports: Laguardia, Kennedy, Newark, Teterboro, Westchester County and Islip. But the views in those landing patterns are worth it!
Well, Richmond looks very pretty!
Another triumphantly vid!
I got to Go through that Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel almost everyday since I work at the Norfolk Airport for Piedmont/American Airlines
Richmond! That is where I landed on Delta connection CRJ-900 from Laguardia after my cancelled flight to Houston.
Dispite the HRBT that I live by, I love the Hampton Roads area
These trip reports are awesome - would love to see a report of a flight on a larger plane like a 767 (assuming you ever do a coastal flight - I know that Delta uses 767s for JFK-LAX)!
Another amazing spotting location in New York is the main United lounge in EWR, you get to see one plane takeoff on either 22L/22R and another-(sometimes much bigger or smaller) plane land
(at the same time)
Awesome video. It always seems like something is wrong on those ERJs
Seems like APU issues are pretty common on those little guys for some reason. It's the only aircraft where I've ever witnessed an air start in person, and I've probably seen at least 3 or 4 over the years.
Nice! Funny that you post this now since I flew into Richmond last Tuesday. Also I don't recall American operating out of Concourse D at LaGuardia (as I flew in and out of Gate D2 three months before you it seems) and remembered just Delta operating out of D.
EDIT: I checked the map of LGA and I didn't know there was another Concourse D in Terminal B. Seems confusing to me.
WI Sirens And Elevators It gets better. AA also runs a bus from concourse C to terminal C. Because they operate out of both. So much confusion and craziness
I didn't realize you were so close to the left engine! in that case pretty quiet considering!
Great video. I always enjoy your videos. I was just wondering why you didn't fly into ORF since you drove down to Hampton Roads after landing at RIC?
awesome video! one tip i do have about these new types of trip report videos is that the text went by very fast, i had to stop multiple times to read them lol but that's a small fix! otherwise keep up the awesome trip reports! i've watched every single one so far lol
CT Trains & Aviation I agree.
I see you have a thing for my beautiful city of Norfolk. And the great area called Hampton Roads VA. The HRBT can be a pain. I was stuck in a 3 mile backup. I cross thks tunnel at least Monthly
I assume after cutting ties with Maker, music is still licensed from AudioMicro? Perhaps listing the track names & track artists used in videos & where they were found may help other people search for them & possibly even license them for their own videos.
i used to have to drive thru that tunnel everyday..what a pain..
like the new video style, it just makes me sad to see you flying AA, but I understand flexibility out of STL isn't very common, I just want to see you take WN more!!! thanks for another great vid!
You may enjoy my next report :)
I actually get on WN a fair bit, but I only film about 25% of my flights overall. Most of my WN trips are just short domestic hops that aren't all that interesting.
All flights are interesting to me!
I love your videos. Who would you say you fly on the most?
Just curious, which music track is used at 19:40?
Super 80's (MD-80) are so old, It's no wonder American works hard to keep them in service longer than they should, The same thing goes to Delta's Super 90's and the 717.
The 717s are just from the mid 2000s so they still have plenty of life in them. McDonnell Douglas had their issues, but their narrowbodies were built like tanks and seem to last forever :)
Where did you get this music? Since you can't use Makers Studios anymore...
I just subscribed and turned on notifications
Could you please do a trip report on Jet Blue?
Is that the lot you normally park in. Flying for the first time in Sept and trying to decide where to park
What camera and video editor do you use?
Did skypark renamed to superpark? BTW, nice music.
Skypark and superpark are two different lots near Lambert. Skypark is near the hotels and superpark is on the far end of the airport with lots on both sides of the interstate.
Nice 3 cylinder
Do any of your trips not start at thr crack of dawn?
very nicely done. I like that song at 21:35 What is it called
Like that song too!
"Simply at Peace" by SBTracks. They have some fantastic stuff. sbtracks.com/track/190741/simply-at-peace-genre-r-b-adult-contemporary-ne?autostart=true
😀👍👍
i lik e175 too
Awesome! Glad you're still doing these videos. I've watched all your hotel and trip report videos and thoroughly enjoy them. I too like to travel a lot, it's addicting. When I watch one of these videos it makes me feel like I am traveling again. I'm headed to Vancouver, BC and then to Las Vegas, NV in a couple weeks. I'll be sure to document those trips.
I have a question. What is more comfortable, the ERJ-135/140/145 or the CRJ-100/200? I've been on the CRJ-100/200 many times and never found it to be comfortable at all, the seats are too narrow and cramped, and the windows are too low. I've never been on the ERJ, as none of the airlines in Canada use them. It seems like the ERJs are more comfortable, especially where you can get an individual seat on one side, plus it seems like the windows are larger and higher up, unlike on the CRJ-100/200.
Glad you enjoyed! And you're spot on. I'm not a fan of the CRJ line in terms of passenger comfort. Even the larger 700/900 models. Tomorrow I'm flying STL-PHL on a -200 and I'm dreading the experience already. The ERJ is a bit lacking in foot room at the window seats, but otherwise is as comfortable as any mainline plane as far as I'm concerned. And the single 'A' seats are fantastic.
Let us know how Air Wis treats you!
Like royalty, I'm sure xD
I chuckled reading this thread, as I fly DCA-BDL and back pretty regularly, and always seem to get the Air Wis CRJ-200s out of gate 35X. Best aviation experience imaginable. The CR2 is my least favorite RJ when it comes to comfort, the ERJs offer a better experience.
Kamal 35X is legendary. I got stuck using that gate on a Republic E175 segment a few years ago. Which is weird because I thought it was more or less reserved for 50-seaters. The E-jet looked huge in the lineup of CR2s and Dash 8s. Air Wis is actually transitioning to United and will stop flying for AA next year. At PHL today there were almost as many Piedmont ERJs as there were Air Wis CR2s. Good news for AA flyers... but I'm dreading seeing those 60 CRJs enter the UAx fleet.
Is LaGuardia airport a hub for delta? I'm seeing a lot of delta planes there
Kyle West Yes, they operate a small hub at the airport along with American.
I take out of Ric a lot
22:33 That's an E 190
Oops. Guess I wasn't paying attention when I wrote that subtitle.
Oh
You need the garmin virb
That's a strange climb after departing LGA. Did you guys go into a hold and climb in the hold over New York? Makes no sense...
Aren't you glad you live in St Louis?
im flying and connecting through Saint Louis on southwest on june 21st from omaha to fort myers
Wow They really must be a brake suppliers best customer with no reverse thrust anymore will let flying thru stl to Nashville on southwest
American was cheaper but they were very rude on my flight to Omaha so I'll use the one I've always had
BTW newark airport is a total sewer united cancelled the 4pm to charleston due to oxygen mask deployment on the ground got a nice leftover 767 instead lol
18:28 dat 737 tho
LOL ;D
The lack of foliage from the air is profoundly depressing.
:D
I didn't know Richmond has an Airport.
Charles Raymond well now you know
Why don't they make you climb a ladder or two on the way just to make it more crazy!
Y do u always seem to go for the early morning flights
For work - so I can get to where I'm going early in the day. For personal trips - because they tend to be cheap. I'm a morning person anyway so I've never found it to be that hard.
American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Allegiant air are soon retiring there MD-80 series planes. There not fuel efficient.
What happened with Maker Studios? Also, check this site here. [www.positionmusic.com/] - They offer music licenses for YT for just $20.(And I believe it gives you the option to monetize.) (You're not alone in having music licensing problems, i'm trying to find music for a short film that i'm trying to put in a few film festivals, and finding affordable music is becoming a major challenge! Not even mentioning the fact that I had to swap out 2/3 of the music tracks, due to the licensing sight apparently not being very reliable!)
Thanks for the tip. Quality of service went way downhill with Maker, so I decided that I'd come out ahead going independent and licensing music on my own (that was the only benefit I was still using with Maker). They ended up dumping like 95% of their partners the next month anyway, so I guess I would have been out either way. kotaku.com/some-youtubers-are-overjoyed-that-maker-studios-is-firi-1792854530
At 35:13 I see my house
:P
I LOVE your trip reports but I have one small element of constructive criticism - please show more of the in-flight cabin features (IFE, snack/drink service, lavatory, etc.), even if you only spend a minute or two on it. Cheers!
Soooo noisy, how much hearing did you lose?
LaGuardia is completely awful, so is Newark. Lambert and Indy are terrific.
Will Stonehocker O'Hare is dangerously busy and incoherent in design, and is dangerously behind in maintenance. One remembers the power outage that disabled a huge piece of the air traffic control system. As a 30+ year IT professional, I am familiar with UPS systems and the technology has existed for decades such that that kind of outage can be made to never happen. I never fly through O'Hare.
fly to omaha sometime
STOP BOSSING HIM AROUND
You'd be in deep shit with a broken APU if you lost the engine providing power. A flight with a broken APU is not allowed by American parent or regional Eagle. You should report this to parent American. Eagle is always violating rules. I never fly them.
Actually, the only restrictions regarding a broken APU is that the airport must have a ground start unit for the engines, and it will start one engine at the gate with several safety restrictions; otherwise there must be an aircraft swap. Otherwise, the only real restriction would be to the aircraft's ETOPS rating: as the ERJ-145 is a twin-engine plane and not ETOPS certified, it defaults to a 60-minute diversion range, much like the Boeing 737-500. Since the flight was always within 60 minutes of a suitable diversion airport (and over land), the lack of an APU, provided it was already filed to maintenance (which it definitely was) and the batteries are working, it's basically just a minor hassle (if you can survive not having AC while on the ground).
"Other considerations for operating without an APU are airplane specific. For example, the EMB-145 has two generators per engine and one on the APU for a total of five generators. The airplane will revert to "essential" power if less than 3 generators are available which means you will lose certain displays and systems that become unpowered. This means if you had an engine failure during flight without an APU you will be in essential power and have to land in that condition because you cannot start the APU to get back up to 3 generators operating."
The above goes along with what I've said: while losing an engine while in-flight would be a bad situation, the proximity to a suitable diversion airport would make it a fairly minor emergency.
Trololzilla The APU is essential to be in perfect working order. The only reason to violate this common sense is for some rich bastards to make more money off the passengers.
BobEckert56 While the APU is a very important part of an airplane, what you said about the airline violating the law simply isn't true for the reasons I listed, and is tantamount to fear mongering.
Trololzilla Yes, I monger fear in people that they have lost their common sense and the rich could care less about their safety to the point of privatizing the ATC system.
BobEckert56 Look, I have pointed out precisely why it isn't illegal to fly without an APU, and why the risk is hardly more than any other time you fly. Call the rich evil if you will, but NO company would that blatantly risk lives for the simple fact that they would lose a shit-ton of money and respect (i.e. even more money due to lack of consumer confidence resulting in loss of business). While the regionals might not have the same standards as mainline, if they have the branding of the mainline, then all people will see is that branding ergo the mainline companies do their damndest to prevent accidents from occurring at regional affiliates.
As to the privatization of ATC: I'm not sure I entirely understand your aversion to it. It's done that way in plenty of western countries, including Canada, and works just as well. You can simply Google how the ATC system is set up in Canada to see how it works - there's no reason to think that, if set up similarly, it couldn't work in this country (note that this is NOT support of such a system for here, I'm merely pointing out that you need to have all the facts before you should form an opinion on anything).
BTW I'm vehemently anti-Trump, so if that's the only reason your aversion stems from then please change your mindset.
