TRIP REPORT - United Airlines (ERJ-145), St Louis to Norfolk 2

  • Back in February, I was out in Virginia on a mix of business and seeing friends. Since the trip involved flying, I (of course) grabbed my camera and headed to the airport. I've done this trip before on United, but it was via Chicago O'Hare in both directions. (Footage of that trip is available here: • TRIP REPORT - United A... ). This time, I did it on United via Washington-Dulles. While an unfortunate schedule change meant that I had to spend 3 hours on the ground at Dulles, it gave me time to really explore the airport. Dulles is probably most famous for its mobile lounges that are now used for concourse-to-concourse travel (and will be out of service entirely some day). I got to catch a ride on one, as well as experience the new underground people mover that's replacing the mobile lounges.
    The trip, as trips on United often do, involved 2 ERJ-145s: One operated by Trans States, the other by Expressjet. The whole thing went very smoothly.

    I was on one of those "mobile lounges" back in the late 1970's at Atlanta's airport. I was only 7 or 8 years old. I think they had those because the airport was too small and the new terminal wasn't built yet.
    I flew an Embraer around 10 years ago into Madison WI. Those things take off like a rocket. Much different than your bad weather trip. :(

Are you coming back to the New York/New Jersey area this summer? Because I live in central Jersey. I have so much stuff to show you here on the Jersey shore. I heard you were up in the city last summer. Plus the beaches here are the best.

    I've experienced takeoff rolls similar to the one you had at STL on Southwest. I think it's pretty cool when they give it full power as they turn onto the runway for takeoff. Never had heard of a 15,000 feet cruising altitude before now. Makes sense considering how short Dulles-Norfolk flight is.

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад +1

      This flight is usually done on Dash 8 turboprops. The schedule got switched about a month before my flight for some reason. That's also why I had to wait around at Dulles for over 3 hours.

    Great trip report as always. I got to experience the CRJ-200 for the first time about a week ago. I thought it was pretty good, probably because only 12 of the 50 seats were taken (I had the emergency exit row and all the rows surrounding me empty) and the fact the flight was only 30 minutes, HPN-PHL.

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад

      I had 2 legs on the CRJ-200 when I flew Delta out of COU (believe it or not, that was my one and only trip on Delta). Didn't work well for me at all. The windows are placed so low that I felt claustrophobic. It's also the tightest 2x2 seating I have yet to experience. Form the perspective of someone who's 6'2 and fairly large, it's a miserable little plane. Though I probably would have felt much differently if I had a whole exit row to myself :)

    Funny story, I live in the DC area and often use IAD...I was in St Louis though last summer...nice area...I however was on Delta from BWI-DTW-STL though but we did use the same terminal as United.....Also later last summer I was on a separate trip, we flew into DCA but we aborted the approach due to weather and diverted to Norfolk lol

      @TheElevatorChannel  9 лет назад

      airplanecrazy1989 Cool. Actually, I ended up in Norfolk again later this spring (no trip report), and I flew in on a Dash-8 turboprop from DCA. We ended up having to go around at ORF because they came in too high and fast the first time.

      The A/B concourse is really nice. C/D is pretty unpleasant. Huge contrast. Your experience at Dulles varies hugely depending on which part of the airport your flight departs from.

      SgtMays That would be in A/B, so you're all set! United exclusively uses the worst parts of the airport, which is ironic since they use Dulles as a hub.

    24:54 Way to go(not). Interpreting “temporary” as “for at least 35 years”! AKA Not flying the friendly skies. Also, the permanent concourse D might have its own station. Mobile lounges are currently only used between the terminal and the current D.

      I know, right? You'd think in a city the size of DC, they'd be able to find a radio station host or some other voiceover actor that could do it for them. The Metrolink here in St. Louis drives me crazy because they use a computer voice that sounds just like Microsoft Sam for platform announcements (announcements on the train are done live by the operator).

    • @TheElevatorChannel
      @TheElevatorChannel  8 лет назад +1

      To answer your question, YES! Believe it or not, that is possible and it happened to me. They announced boarding and when we got into that little hallway, there were 2 doors marked with "St. Louis" and no staff in sight. So we all started going on the first plane. The flight attendant realized what was happening after about 5 people got onboard and chased us back off. So we got back off just as a supervisor in a very bad mood started yelling at everyone to get back inside. So yeah, the boarding process got so messed up that we just had to start over again. To make things better, we boarded the correct plane the second time only for the crew to realize a tire had to be replaced, so we went back in the terminal again. Thankfully our 3rd boarding attempt was the last one, and we got back into St. Louis a little over 3 hours late. One of my best United stories :)
