I flew Air Choice One a few years ago from Burlington, IA to Chicago O'hare and back... It was an awesome experience! Thanks for sharing this video trip report.
Joseph Sia Air Choice One is probably the most fun airline I've ever done business with. Awesome staff, plus the thrill of landing at major airports like O'Hare in tiny propellor planes.
Awesome video, It's cool to see how much you appreciated the Cessna 208. I fly the Fedex feeder version of the 208 for work, I absolutely love this airplane.
Thanks for a great video! I think the Cessna Caravan is a good plane for short flights. This must have been the way it was during the early days of commercial aviation: just a few passengers on a plane with the pilot, flying at low altitudes and landing and taking off every half hour or every hour.
I live in North Brenton and Travel to Kensington TVCTA Rail Station at 7:00 AM for the 8:15 AM Train to TR Airport Central Station. It left Chaseville Condor Street Station at 4:05 AM and Arrives at TR Airport Central Station at 10:38 AM. Train Details: TVCTA Rail 465. Origin: Chaseville Condor Street Station (CCS) Note: It also serves Amtrak. Terminus: Tailslandian River Airport Central Station (CSA) I flew Air Choice One (operated by Tailslandian Airways Charter) (CSA to CHS via ATL) Note: I was invited to a conference up in Charleston, SC. Lodging was included, but I stayed at my own house in Ladson, SC.
My cousins flew Air Choice One from IWD-ORD a few times. And MKE has this new airline called OneJet which uses aircraft similar sized and they currently go to IND and PIT from MKE
That was super cool to see! Yeah, small planes can't use average weights for weight and balance like the big jets. Each person and luggage must be weighed and then calculated by the pilot. Then each passenger is assigned a seat based on their weight. This is to keep the CG, or center of gravity, within limits so the plane remains stable in flight. Flying in small planes offers a whole new way to fly. I'm glad you got to experience it, and thanks for sharing it with us!
Southwest 737 One of my fondest memories was taking the co-pilot's seat in a King Air 200. That was my only other experience in a GA aircraft (too bad it took place a few years before I started making RUclips videos). Small planes are lots of fun.
***** I almost took a job working on the cargo version goes by the name Caravan; of this plane. Fedex uses them for short commutes but those guys didnt want to pay me enough an hour. Civilian side typically doesn't unless Fedex or UPS or other unionized Airline. Most FBO's arent. These guys were subcontracted by Fedex to work on their Caravans.. Ive worked Military contracts the past 4 years and now work on Fairchild Metroliners with the AirForce. In aviation maintenance its where the easy money is at. I have a vid up on my channel of all the aircraft I have seen or worked on, well most anyways if you care to have a look.
hanksranger I've heard of that before. As I understand it, independent airlines operate under a brand called "FedEx Feeder". Probably very similar to regional airlines that operate under banners like "United Express". It's commonly said in the industry that working for the big airlines pays well, but working for the companies that do work for the big airlines is a tough way to make a living.
Yeah the key is unions in the civilian sector if you have a union job within an outfit you will get a good wage. Military is always good though sometimes there are unions with military contracts.
This was a great video. I'm from Minneapolis and saw they had $25.00 tickets one way. So I think I might try them out for a fun day of flying. Thanks for the video!
Im thinking about going on an air excursion to ORD via IWD with my girlfriend with ACO. (She thinks the CRJs and ERJs are the smallest things in the world!) Im glad that they serve MSP now.
If you'd be so informed as you say you are.. why do you have to prove it? And The Caravan is still one of the smaller passenger planes operating in the States. So chill.
This is simply amazing and one of the most unique TRs I've seen. I have tried to make time to fly Air Choice One but I haven't gotten around to it, yet. I think you've made up my mind, I need to get on one of those little Cessnas! -max
As a native to the Chicago area, I understand what the hotel experience is like. A lot of them lack cleanliness (or at least the ones I've stayed at downtown; I haven't been to many hotels in Chicago). And probably about every fifth person smokes.
9:07 we will be using the same runway as big planes, lol Cape Air has a way of doing that, the flights from Ord to Decatur usually use the runway used by heavies 10L/28R
I'm going to be traveling on an EAS carrier from Oakland to Merced in a couple weeks, to take a day trip to Yosemite! I'm excited, the smallest plane I've been on is a Q400, and that was 10 years ago!
All of your flying trip reports are great, I just like to record landings and takeoffs when I fly. I as well have flown on a Cessna Caravan, but with SeaPort Airlines from Sacramento to Visalia, CA. I will be posting that flight soon along with the other three flights I took for that trip.
They should add Automatic station announcements, where the train goes over a trigger and announces something like “This is, Lambert Terminal 1, the last station. This is the terminal for all airlines except Southwest”
We used to have flights on those Cessnas a few years back. New Mexico Airlines operated them from El Paso to Carlsbad and to Alamagrodo. I wish the airline did not leave El Paso.
I hope you brought earplugs! The only propeller plane I rode was ISP-PHL, and though the low altitude and less recirculating air was nice, the noise was deafening.
LIRR175 The Cessna 208B was pretty quiet for a prop plane (still louder than a jet, obviously). I'd guess you flew on a Piedmont (US Airways Express) Dash 8 if you were headed into Philadelphia on a prop plane. Those things can be pretty obnoxious, and most of the noise comes from things vibrating and rattling in the cabin. It's a really cool plane, but the design makes for a noisy ride. The newer variants of the Dash 8 produced by Bombardier have advanced noise reduction systems, so they're a bit quieter.
EthanS Elevators It's amazing that a single-engine aircraft can be used as an airliner. I was shocked at how comfortable, spacious, and quiet the cabin was given the size of the plane.
***** It's a lot of fun if you ever get the chance to fly on one. It makes the whole flying experience much more personable. The fact that you can see the pilot (and out the front of the plane) during the flight really makes for a cool experience.
***** I love traveling. Due to a variety of reasons, I've been out of town a LOT since last summer (every few weeks in some cases). It's going to slow down again soon, but it's been a fun ride. I'll still keep shooting videos whenever I get the chance.
I really wish I could be doing what you do! Traveling is my LIFE, and exploring new places like I did when I was in St. Louis a couple years ago is what I love to do!
Like your videos Q. What do you do for a living I travel from Los Angeles to saint Luis on american air lines md80 my seat was next the engine Wow the noise was something else
Be optimistic Air Choice One, not that far away from Air Foice One. Bush Pilot's plane on proper huge runways, when it only needs a stretch of flat dirt? Chance to get extra detail at lower altitudes; nice one.
5:14 “If you are confronted by an aggressive panhandler, do whatever you need to do to keep yourself safe,” “Walk away and go to a nearby business or another public place. If you feel threatened, call (911) for help.
I have flown Air Choice One from Burlington, Iowa, to Chicago O'Hara a number of times, and each time the plane has gotten near O'Hara, then flew out over Lake Michigan for about 15 minutes before heading back to land at O'Hara. I've always wondered what would happen if there was a malfunction and we landed on the water. No life vests, life rafts, etc., and it would take a long time for boats to find the plane. Anyone else ever worried about this?
Yeah it's a single engine Cessna technically but it's hardly a 172. It burns jet fuel and can carry 3500 lbs. Its normal private jet size, slow as hell but not small.
I'm trying to understand a business model that makes sense where planes as small as a Cessna Caravan can pay for landing rights, a gate or two, and the rest of the generally massive fees that are part of operating in airports like ORD, JFK, LAX, DFW, and so on. It can certainly be done, but it seems like each seat on the small plane would require a premium price. For the customer, you get almost all the associated downside of flying through such airports - massive sprawl, long check-in lines, looooong TSA security clearing lines, expensive parking/shuttles, costly rental cars, and so on. If you are going to "fly small," the smaller airports seem more sensible: Chicago-Midway, Houston-Hobby, and smaller cities like Columbus, Ohio or Birmingham, Alabama. The flight certainly looks like a blast though. Just not sure how it makes business sense for that airline.
That's a great question, and there's 2 things going on here that explain it. #1 - Air Choice One is part of the federal government's Essential Air Service program, meaning these flights are heavily subsidized with the mission of providing service to airports that otherwise wouldn't sustain it. The value of these subsidies is highly debatable in a place like mid Illinois (with many nearby airports that have self-sustaining air service), but we'll leave the politics aside. #2 - For the most part, Chicago isn't the destination as much as O'Hare is. Air Choice One largely exists so people can fly into O'Hare and connect to another flight somewhere else. I believe they actually code share with American Airlines, meaning that you can buy a connecting ticket on AA's website with one segment operated by Air Choice One.
As I suspected, this really doesn't make free market "financial sense." However, the free market does leave legitimate gaps. I thought "Essential Air Service" would apply more to highly rural and/or remote places like Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. Acting as a small scale regional feeder makes sense. Most of us pay extra fees on our phone bill to help subsidize rural/remote telephone service. Not sure how much this applies to cellular telephone bills, however. City folk should consider these fees as part of their grocery bill each month.
You should hop on an airchoice one flight to jackson Tn and go to Reggies BBQ. The ground crew might be willing to take you there in between flights. I am an employee of ACO ( Air Choice One) The food at the restaurant is some of the best BBQ i have ever had.
One of these days, I will have to take a trip up there with them. Everyone here seems to really like their customer service but there are often delays.
N.E.A. Elevators That pretty much sums up my experience. Their service was fantastic, but the flight was 2 hours late. In fairness, they called me the night before to warn that it would likely be late. They even offered to switch me to the early morning flight.
@16:11- Pit stop lol! What is that like Metra airlines.(Or whatever the train is called out in Saint Louis.) Did they have a voice announcement on that thing to. ("The next stop will be Decatur.) :) Still looks way better then Sprit airlines lol! @2826-That whole airport looks like it belongs in a funhouse lol! @32:08-That's the Electric Line. Those train's are actually different from the rest of the lines.
TheElevatorPlanet The point of the flight is really to get people in and out of Decatur, not between St. Louis and Chicago. I just rode it all the way through because it was a cheap option. Really fun experience heading up to Chicago on such a tiny plane. Glad you liked the video!
Very cool trip report! Unfortunately, I know all too well about flights being delayed. We were stuck at DFW outside of Dallas for 6 hours because of a storm.
It's actually such a big coincidence that you uploaded this today. in your video you showed yourself walking around SLU briefly. I'm actually watching this video right now from a clothing drive truck at Reinert Hall, on SLU's campus. small world, huh?
Very unique video indeed! I read something a few years ago in the Post-Dispatch about Air Choice One: www.stltoday.com/business/local/business-soars-for-air-choice-one-a-st-louis-county/article_041f6899-8723-58b0-ad84-7d069bebdf1f.html. Great job as always, and keep those trip reports coming!
stlweather Thanks for the article! Air Choice One is probably my favorite airline I've ever done business with. Their staff is fantastic, and I had lots of fun chatting with their whole crew at STL. No one on my flight even seemed to mind the delay because they were so nice about it.

Joseph Sia Air Choice One is probably the most fun airline I've ever done business with. Awesome staff, plus the thrill of landing at major airports like O'Hare in tiny propellor planes.

I flew this exact same aircraft N1983X from ORD to STL on ACO through MCW and FOD :)
What an odd little plane! I'll have to look up these EAS carriers next time I'm planning a trip somewhere.

air choice one is great, only used them twice but with two great flights.

I have an app on my phone called infinite flight. One of the airplanes that I fly on there is a Cessna 208. How cool is that?
Me too, love infinite flight I Fly bigger aircraft
I love infinite flight
Same specially the airports to the east of KSAN are my favorites for the Cessna 208
Its so shit try p3d or fsx
i have the app

A Delta 767 at O’Hare arriving internationally? That’s pretty odd.
Thanks for a nice video I've been thinking about flying for them as a pilot
Yes!..,i enjoyed it!.
Hmmmm.... 7 hrs 30 min from your home to your hotel. Its not worth it to fly to Chicago from STL on a small plane.

I can't wait for the Best Western tour. Is it as good(meaning bad) as the HoJo or that Quality Inn?
TheElevatorPlanet It actually went live on my channel this morning. ruclips.net/video/XsMrELDeUbk/видео.html
***** Great. How did I miss that..
15:25 even if you flew in in a C150, you'd have a ramper marshal you in. That's how the terminal and FBO arrange their parking space.
Very cool trip report! Unfortunately, I know all too well about flights being delayed. We were stuck at DFW outside of Dallas for 6 hours because of a storm.
No jet bridge?! weird... walking on the tarmac is dangerous af lol
i LOVE infinite flight its really good
did the plane have a bathroom?
***** No bathroom. The longest hop his airline makes is less than an hour and a half.
+DieselDucy It never did. Planes like that sometimes don't because they are so small
28:38 Best Sound Ever!
I'm only kidding
that sound makes me laugh. it’s supposed to be a “success!” sound, but it just sounds depressed

+Craig Walkup Renovations were completed about a year before this was taken. Not too far off :)
dude....don't you ever travel in summer?
I enjoy every one!
Interesting video! You should try going to Philadelphia!
27:47 nice elevator 27:53 pretty cool

Everything about that flight reminded me of air koryo
flame3601 mostly I fly 737's, 747's, and A380's, but the small ones are good too.
You almost flew right over my house arriving at KDEC
you have gotten the SAME watch as me!
***** You gave it to me, Andrew!
Cool!
Is the plane really that loud or is the microphone on your camera perhaps exaggerating the prop noise and such? It seems really deafening. Just curious.
Yes it can be almost deafeningly loud in these planes.
How much for a one way?
Hello,
yes i enjoy the trip.
MfG Jan
👍
12:08 LOL (Read the comment)
How long was the flight?
Do what I do buy a scooter and scooter to wherever you are going faster and more efficient
flame3601 While that wouldn't work very well for going to the airport (where would you leave it?), I've considered getting one to use around the city.
***** Well not for the airport, but as you said getting around :)
plus it a total babe magnet ;)
Check this out! I made a video honoring your Air Choice One trip reports.

6:46 Not everyday you see a kei-truck on the apron of an American airport - if at all!
Vasconium Wow, wasn't excepting you here at all! Lol
I can not bleve you ride a small plaine
