7 HOUR Domestic Flight Across America - Newark to Anchorage

  • The second leg on my journey to the top of the United States was aboard a United Airlines B757-200 from Newark, New Jersey all the way up to Anchorage, Alaska on an over 7 hour domestic flight across North America. It was certainly one of the longest flights I've taken, not going international and well, it was a little disappointing to say the least...especially in the food department. I'd like to think I'm not the only one to wonder why there wasn't any substantial service offered either complimentary or buy onboard. The seats aren't the greatest themselves either with a noticeably older interior standing out. That coupled with the fact every single seat was taken certainly provided for some major leg stiffness after awhile, but overall...I think it definitely could've been a lot worse and flying the 757 that long again was a treat. So, not bad, not good. Hope you guys enjoy!

    It’s so sad and inexcusable that they don’t provide meals on these flights. As you mentioned in the beginning, a flight to DUB or LHR, roughly the same flight time, economy gets 2 meals. But to Alaska, 0 because it’s a domestic flight. We had to FIGHT for meals on Hawaii flights. It’s so sad, meal offerings should be flight time based, not domestic vs intl.

    It's sad to see a tired looking 757. In 1983 I went with my Father to an open house for EAL's first 757 arrival as he was an employee there in Miami. It was a magnificent shiny bird fresh from Boeing and an added bonus was a greeting from Frank Borman at the back entrance of the plane. Now EAL is long gone and what was then a technologically advanced bird with that new plane smell was broken up many years ago. Just a memory from this AV Geek.

    United used 757s for the Newark to Dublin/Shannon flight for years, flew it many times from 2007 to 2010. It was fine but back then you weren't charged for selecting an exit row. I think they now fly the 787 or 767. The interior on your flight is actually an upgrade from what it looked like during that time.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 Год назад

      I thought that a flight as long as 7 hours would always be a wide-body aircraft, since they carry more fuel. But 757s are the longest of the narrow-bodies so apparently they can do 7 hour flights (they also carry the most passengers of the narrow-bodies because they're both the longest and have a 3-3 seat configuration)
      I have always thought that 767s (the smallest of the wide-bodies) were the smallest aircrafts to do long flights (they probably are the smallest to do flights 9 hours or more)

    • @RoadCone411
      @RoadCone411 Год назад

      @@alvexok5523 The economics of the B752 and B753 are superior to the B763 on most equivalent sectors. I would guess that EWR-ANC is one of the longest Boeing 757 flights in the world - I know UA used to fly TXL-EWR with these planes too
      The B753 is the 'flying pencil' that carries more passengers but has less range than the B752. Only a few airlines fly the longer 757, UA and DL happen to be two of them.

      United stopped retrofitting their 757-200s yet because they plan to retire them by 2026. After the MAX8 inaugural, they haven't started retrofits due to chip shortage. But once the chip shortage is over, they should do a systematic triage where they don't start retrofitting another type until they finish one type. Here's my triage:
      1. MAX 9
      2. 737-900ER
      3. Tie (737-800, 737-900)

    I had no idea a flight of that length doesn't have meals. That's just plain wrong on such a long flight and on an old plane. . I remember flying United from Newark to Portland about 5 years ago on a 757, and that aircraft had problems. When the flight attendant closed the door the door handle fell off, and we had to wait for that to be fixed. Then about an hour into the flight we hit turbulence and one overhead locker door broke open and all the bags fell out on to the floor. The latch broke so the crew couldn't close it. I was very glad to get off that plane in Portland, which was I think was a 5 1/2 hour flight. I know I bought a sandwich on that flight so they had food. United needs to retire those 757's. I use to spend alot of time at that Anchorage Airport when I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB. Seems like the base always had me picking up military members flying in.

    United now operates their new Max 8 on this route. That's actually a downgrade if you're in business class since it has regular domestic recliners instead of the lie flat seats on the 757. However, it has the new interior with the newest IFE system and larger overhead bins, so it's probably a lot better in economy. United is in the process of upgrading their remaining 757-200s. They have 40 of them, all of which originally flew with Continental and have the international configuration. They'll get reupholstered business class seats, new economy seats, and the new IFE system throughout the plane, though they aren't upgrading the cabin like Delta did with their 757 fleet.

      I find Continental's old interior aesthetic to be cozy. It's not blind-you-eyes white and bright like United's retrofitted 767-300s and 777-200s. United's other interiors like like the MAXes, 787 and 777-300ERs have moodlighting at least so when they turn the lights on after landing, it's gradual and can go between 0% and 100% and not a sudden 100% lighting. Their Airbus narrowbodies are neither modern nor cozy. Their new interior is starting to grow on me, but only if it's on a plane with Sky Interior, I don't think their new interior is meant for Boeing's older Signature interior (777, 767, 757, older 737)

    I don’t travel much, but I am surprised that a legacy carrier traveling more than 6 hours doesn’t serve something warm. I know not to expect it from a low cost like Southwest or Spirit. Would it be a normal expectation for United, American, Delta and Alaska to provide meals for let’s say 6+ hours? Or is meal service just hit and miss? Maybe this was a while ago, I think you did say the FA said it was coming back.

    I refuse to resume business travel for this reason. The airlines are still not providing meal on these ultra long domestic flights and yet: 1) many airports' food vendors have not returned; and 2) TSA moans and complains about food items like yogurt, because it's in the form of "gel"... ; and 3) connection times are still short, leaving even a Starbucks run risky between flights... It's actually kind of inhuman to go for this many hours without food or substantive snacks...
