- Gisborne City Council and the New Zealand Geographical Board are considering whether to change the name Poverty Bay back to the original Tūranganui-a-Kiwa after a petition initiated by Kaiti School in 2013. Master carver Aturangi Nepia-Clamp and retiree Mike Mulrooney debate the issue. Teacher Ani Te Kani and pupil Connor Paenga talk about the history of the area, the impact of colonialism and James Cook's arrival in the Endeavour. (12 January 2019 the final decision made opting for the dual name, Tūranganui-a-Kiwa / Poverty Bay). ➡️ SUBSCRIBE: / @thehuinewzealand

As a pakeha New Zealander who was born on the west coast of the South Isiand from Engish parents but grew up in Gisborne I am proud to identify that Turanganui-a-kiwa is my turangawaiwai. This is were I grew up and I identify Turanganui-a-kiwa as the place that I identify as my home. Not Poverty Bay.
Except it isn't. Lol you're a pakeha.
No one says “Poverty Bay” we all call it GIZZY😂😂😂
Tu Rangi Maori call it
@@skyline472aye 🤣 we call it gizzy theres already a tu rangi 🤣😂
Hahaha I never heard of poverty bay. I work with people from gizzy on the boats my boat besties am gonna hardout drop this name when I seen them next. They call me white boy cause I'm from chch
@@skyline472never heard of that but ok
@@RedSonja.never heard of it must have missed it on the map
When captain cook arrived in Uawa Tolaga bay his crew were dying of scurvy, some already passed away.
The local Maori introduced the native beach spinach to them.
Cook wrote in his journal how quickly they recovered, even the ones so close to death he thought it was unreversable.
Now the native plant is known as cooks scurvy grass.instead of the native name.
Holy. ❤
Crap, Stone Age cannibals.
What bull shit.
If it wasn't for Queen Victoria Maoris wouldn't be here today as Maoris were eating each other and dieing.
Maoris asked Queen Victoria for help to survive otherwise Maoris wouldn't be here today.
So Maoris owe Europeans everything.
Maoris are also not native to New Zealand that is all lies Maoris migrated in from South East Asia it is not there land or anything else for that matter.
Maoris are migrants there were meany other people living in New Zealand way before Maoris landed on the shores of nz only 650 years ago.
Gisborne or Turanganui a kiwa
excellent reporting as usual
Change it. I didn't like poverty bay and I was a kid, and I was born there. I use the name Turanga nui a kiwa. ❤
Turanganui A Kiwa for the win .
I'm always going to call it Gisborne no matter what name it has.
YES! Take that Poverty Bay cursed name off Gisborne thank you.
The spoken words have power either for cursing or blessing.
A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
What a good man Mike is even though his whakaaro he's choice

Alot of intangibles, from both sides, generating a true sense of awareness and compassion doesn't hurt anyone.
3:50 history is history, and no one has the write to alter it. 🤔🤔🤔 So what’s the government doing with the treaty principles???🤔🤷♂️. Only when the shoe is on the other foot aye.
Defining them instead of leaving them vague and open to constant and endless reinterpretation for financial gain.
And what is the cost going to be to change the name ?
Im sure there are more important ways the money could be spent,
If you come to gizzy now it looks like poverty bay its sad for a place that naturally has everything available.
TNAK
Always will be Gisborne to me! Poverty Bay is the bay.
Give the place it's rightful name that's how it got it name before the white wash European colonizer's landed there Turanginuiakiwa don't you think mate 😂😂😂😂😂
Lol
Not being a Debbie Downer imagine changing Otago to Otakao and Waihola to Waihora
Gisborne.
Turanga
why the fuck do u care greg
Change it
Te Giz.
Change the name back to Turanga nui a kiwi, stuff what the white pakeha think.
Nobody ever cared what they think anyway. It's why New Zealand is falling in ever statistic we measure.
Call it what you like - do you really think its going to make the place prosper?!?! - every 2nd shop down Gladstone rd is empty. The CBD is full of homeless folk, pissing in doorways, leaving their sleeping gear & shopping trolleys full of stuff there while they go bludge a few bucks off people. Its full of run-down, depressing old soviet looking buildings. The roads are completely fkd, The coast is P-ridden & its not going to recover anytime soon - if ever. The beaches are raped of Paua & crays. Theres 2 big clocks in town - neither tell the right time. We get cruise ships - that pull up right next to a log yard full of dust & bark, very much an industrial area. As soon as the tourists get across the bridge into town the beggars are on them - ive even hear some comment "what the hell did they bring us to this dump for?" Since the Freezing works, Watties etc closed, this town has gone steadily backwards. I could write more, plenty more, but I think ive described it pretty well - the place is a disgrace & we also have racial division pushing it even further in reverse. It was nothing like this in the 70s - early 80s. Seriously considering getting out of the dive that Gisbourne is.
A sad summary of facts but you’re right - a name change isn’t going to change a thing. Let’s focus on the things that really matter, he tangata he tangata, he tangata. When our people are flourishing then we can argue about the name of the place.
@@mugg99 Absolutely!

"Has unpleasant feelings" - toward a certain demographic. Te Atu - stop blaming all white skinned people for the actions of those who were in no way, shape or form related to the perpetrators. If a White person were to have "unpleasant feelings" toward maori due to the actions of other Maori, then it would be labeled for exactly what it is - racism. Not only that, they would be branded far right. Once again, a 2 tier attitude.
This is triggering however TRNAK
Stop saying Maori are the original settlers it's bullshit and they know and the dirty government know.
O please expert person tell us who and show us the bones where they reside

Humans have migrating and mixing for thousands of years my problem is not with Maori but the utter lies
And primary culprit is the government.
@@darrelhenley-mc9dw the only thing is, the vikings did not have the navigational ability to get to the pacific. at the time the only credible way of navigating to and around the pacific was by familiar star clusters, and trade winds and currents. that fact has nothing to do with whatever oppressive govt is in power at any one time.
I was born in Gisborne. Keep it that way. Enough is enough. White people were here before Maori .

@Theman-gj1es Moriori you think?
@@shane4578uh are you a Maori from poverty bay? Bc poverty bay/wairoa/tuhoe/Heretaunga Maori descend from moriori - our ancient hapu are still very much reverred.
