I always associate the Hunchback of Notre Dame with intense feelings of fear, shame and regret. Not because I've actually read it yet but because one time I used it to kill a really big spider.

You know how that amazing old book smell kind of smells like vanilla? Did you know it actually IS vanilla? Old book pages when they break down produce vanillin, the same chemical that gives vanilla its smell and taste 🤩
They have this essential oil? Perfume scent for sale on Etsy. Haven't bought it. But I 👍. One of the most HEAVENLY scents on earth. That aged book smell.📚

I was just talking about this to someone the other day. I read that fact about vanillin and what I don’t get is how anyone on this earth has smelled an old book and thought “that smells like vanilla.” In all my life never ever EVER has an old book smelled good to me. It has never smelled like anything other than dust and mildew no matter the book or the place it came from. And I am so utterly confused by the vanilla thing now.

Huckleberry Finn is a continuation of "The adventures of Tom Sawyer" book from the same author actually! I read it in around 5th or 6th & 7th grade (both books) & it was really fun teenagehood book literally ❤

Yes, that 30 page chapter where he describes Paris from above is quite good. The whole thing is good, really. And IMHO the psychology of Esmerelda is decades ahead of its time.

oh i'm currently reading notre-dame de paris! so far i really love how it talks about architecture and the connection between quasimodo and the notre-dame (which, at the time that victor hugo was writing the book, was a deeply scarred and mutilated building--the novel actually inspired a restoration of the cathedral)

Lud-in-the-Mist is a wonderful, intoxicating read. It may require prior excursions to both Victorian and early 20th century mythopoeic works to be truly savored, though.
Still, if you do find yourself enjoying Mirrlees, you'll eventually obsess over John Crowley's Little Big -- and, to a lesser extent, Gaiman's Stardust, Emma Bull's War for the Oaks and Jonathan Carroll's The Land of Laughs.

Love that you are so excited about the old German books! We had to read these old texts in school written in the old German type and i never thought someone would find the old type fascinating (it was always a bother to read XD). But I do love Rilke as well so I can understand the excitement about old books :)
Oh my god, I literally jumped when I saw Actual Air. David Berman's work (both his poetry and his music) means so much to me. I cannot wait to see your thoughts on that collection, I hope you love it! (And if you want to check out his music, I think "Pretty Eyes" and "The Wild Kindness" are his best songs and great places to start.)

Omg! I just spotted Lud-in-mist on a list of most beautifully and intrinsically written fantasy books ever list a few weeks back. And I was shook. Like, even LOTR was on the special add on mentions down on the footnotes of this list. And this book was in the top three or something. I just didn’t double think and got it. But then I got a little scared if it would be out of my understanding scope😂 Now that you’ve got it I am so so happy!!! Yayy! I’ll probably read this along with you whenever you read it. 🤗 I read Dante’s Inferno like that and it was so easy!
Since you said you need more fun books you should totally read The Raven Cycle. It's the absolute perfect balance of plot and character in my opinion. There are some darker themes and topics sprinkled throughout but overall The Raven Cycle is just so fucking fun to read.

I have that EXACT copy of the Hunchback and I have yet to read it just because it looks so pretty sitting on my shelf. My best friend is French and we joke about Hugo all the time so I definitely need to get to it. Beautiful haul! 🖤

Victor Hugo is one of my all time favorites, and The Hunchback is the best of the best. I still giggle at the thought of Gringoire and the goat, and the writing is so evocative and gorgeous. I also love a short story he wrote called The Last Days of A Condemned Man, which shows how the death penalty is state sanctioned torture.
The old Rilke editions are so cool! The old German font is kind of difficult to read, it actually says "Das Stunden Buch" (Book of Hours), so the first letter is supposed to be a weird looking S instead of G ;)

I really enjoyed Lud-In-The-Mist! The exploration of separating the fae from the human and how damaging that is was really cool, and it's just such an interesting little read. I feel like once you've read it you can really see its influence on later authors writing fae fantasy.

I'm glad someone sent you Crush; I was gonna do it if no one else did! Siken is a pretty cool dude. After giving the book to one of my friends, he reached out to Siken to see if he could get permission to write a choral version of a poem from Crush. Siken was all "Heck yes" about it.
Lud-in-the-Mist is one of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, which are now collectible. They all had spectacular wrap-around covers, and re-introduced many wonderful if forgotten epic fantasy novels to readers eager for more after Tolkien was re-discovered in the late 1960s, early 1970s.
The Origins of Satan by Elaine Pagels may interest you, she's a premiere scholar on these matters. Hitchens was a bit strident, but raised good points.
The Name of the Rose introduced me to Eco's work, and I'd also recommend Foucault's Pendulum if you like TNOTR. Layered stuff, scholarly and playful. He's a semiologist so he tends to like symbols and signifiers.

Lud-In-The-Mist is strange and wonderful. Hope Mirlees also wrote on of the great long modernist poems, Paris which I love. Once you've read it I recommend Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend-Warner.

Yes! Lud-In-The-Mist!!! It deserves so much more recognition. I read it on a recommendation because I liked Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and it was so good!. It is an older book, so the language is slightly harder to click in to, but once you do, it's very rewarding. Also, the pacing is slow, but worth sticking with.

Yay, someone else who appreciates David Hume! His thoughts on government and on beauty are really profound and ahead of his time. Loved Hunchback but liked Les Miserables even better. New to the channel but loving it so far!
Yes, you and have must similar taste in reading. However, I'm not sure I understand the need for six books of Les Miserables, nevertheless that's what Hugo gave us.
@@jamesduggan7200 The first version I read was shortened not abridged so it left out a lot of the unnecessary description. I think that helped. The story is beautiful but Hugo does tend to go on and on.

Another great book by Umberto Eco is Foucault's pendulum. A difficult read but fantastic all the same.
My reading Bible is the Oxford, and what I do is: After reading one of the books I read the included history/commentary. In general, I find it difficult to read them otherwise. Thx Em! btw I'm a huge Buffy fan too
I love your videos! I would really love to hear about your take on the dark artifices by Cassandra Clare. It’s a Shadowhunters series, but I feel like people who have read the mortal instruments and the infernal devices (predecessors of TDA) didn’t read TDA because they didn’t like TMI and TID. And I feel so bad because the dark artifices is honestly SUCH a good series.

omg i also took two years of italian in college and i can't even remember basic conjugation yet somehow i've convinced myself that i can read italian lit in its original language
i studied philosophy and lit in the uk - no bible, but we did do descartes and hume! definitely start with descartes, his meditations are such a good way in: fun voice/narrator + introduction to some of the cornerstones of western philosophy ~

I‘m from germany and this special font is actually called „sütterlin“ and was used for quite some time (early 20th century) in almost every printed book in germany.
I work at a German archive, that's not Sütterlin. Sütterlin looks more like Kurrentschrift, where the e's look like squished n's. This looks more like Fraktur.

Berman's Actual Air is one of my favourite poetry books, I bought the original paperback edition right after it was published because excerpts that were available, I forgot where, fascinated me instantly. Too bad he never wrote any more poetry. I had some apprehensions about Crush and believed at first it were hyped, but no - when I did finely buy and read it I realized how good it is. No hype, really good. The Name of the Rose is one of my favourite novels, entertaining, intelligent, erudite - Eco knows what he's writing about, the setting is realistic, the protagonist was one of the real existing philosophers, one of the most important. The Hume and Descartes I also read when I studied philosophy. I liked reading Hume, you learn a lot reading him. Today I absolutely disagree with him - but I do not regret at all having spend a lot of time and effort studying him.
A good follow up for Descartes would be his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia (their letters are published in a pretty accessible book). Elisabeth wrote to Descartes and challenged him on his work and pointed out some of the issues with his work and especially his dualism. Elisabeth is one of the very wonderful female philosophers whose contributions to philosophy are underappreciated, so from both a history of philosophy and from a philosophical perspective their correspondence is really interesting.
Hume's moral philosophy is really interesting. You might want to start with that. His account of moral judgement is based on empathy (sympathy is his term, but it means the same thing as empathy does now), and he is one of the first philosophers who really think about the role of empathy in the moral life. A Treatise of Human Nature would be the book to go to if you are interested in that (especially book 3).
For Philosophy you should also try Iliad Poem of Force by Simone Weil. Simone Weil pretty heavily influenced Anne Carson, so she's worth looking into if you like Anne Carson. Poem of Force is both an interpretation of Homer and an opportunity for Weil to write about her own thoughts on war and violence and how it shapes the psychology of everyone involved. Weil is a wonderful philosopher who lived during the early 20th century and died part way through WW2. She thought a lot about caring for others and about how violence, affliction, and pain shape our perceptions and behaviours.
