The lesson here is don't try to imitate Chris's story, he's an inspiration for us to create our own story, whatever that story may be. For me he inspired me to see nature and the great outdoors in a new light. Create your own story, this was Chris's story.

My humble opinion: Carine and Chris are way more introspective and adventurous than most kids coming from physically and psychologically abusive and dysfunctional parents. It takes a heck of a pair of "balls" and "guts" to launch off far away from abusive parents. And do what they've done to this point. The psychological constraint that is put on a children's brain is enormous - Carine proved it that by saying that it took her SO MANY years, with even having Chris's story and movie as a "guide and support" to do what she does today and especially spell out the truth in her book. I think they are both fortunate - to a certain point. And they both are incredibly respectable for their time and openness. Indeed, Carine, the truth is a good 'modus operandi' and can hurt. But damn it, it's way better than discovering years later how deeply manipulated you were when as a child. All my respect. Chris
I agree 100%. Someday I'll do a book, maybe it'll be just like a journal exercise, but the amount of similarities are unreal. Even just watching/listing to this is an experience. I'm with you in that I believe most are taught either directly or indirectly to repress the past, and to not overcome it. Why? It's not only reliving it, but it's often a lifelong process as you're constantly feeling like you're behind, alienated, etc throughout this long reconciliation process. Many times you reach major breakthroughs, and you're so excited you want to share them, but nobody can relate. You then see others that may have gone through what you did, and you try to talk to them, but they're just gone, they don't want to go there, they have cemented a big scar tissue like defensive wall and only they can take it down. It's hard because you want to help them, sometimes you think you found the "cheat code" - Hey just read this, hey just listen to this, etc. I'd say that's the most difficult part for me is seeing people whom have been hurt participate in self destructive behavior and never truly find their ultimate gift and potential, which is one of our purposes... We are in this country, a toxic sea that benefits the few at the expense of the many, as corporations have it down to a formula to profit from learned self destructive behavior.
No, they are just adventurous in different ways. Chris just happened to be a physical 'runner'. My best friend is one. She's such a runner that she now works for an airline and she's going back to school to be a travelling nurse. There's this inability to rest in these people.
I was born in different culture but I really found Chris life story and what he had done is amazing and inspiring for humanity in this planet. Chris still shines as a star guiding for enlightenment for those who seek. Into the wild movie left something deep inside my soul and made me watching it many times…! I so admire how she took up the mantle to keep his story alive....and to help others who are suffering from similar inner conflict and abuse .... Carine & Chriss' stories are of the most inspirational in my life. So relatable in the family drama, standing up for what you believe in, choosing to be the light coming out of the darkness, giving up your life savings & following your dreams. @@guytremblay1647 Carine was successful long before she felt it was time to tell this story. Obviously her and the family have made some extra pocket change from Chris’ story and rightfully so. Imagine the whole world knows the flaws and faults of your family. Reparations would absolutely be deserved in that scenario. I think some respect should be held there. I don’t so much look at it as Chris’ story as I do it being Carine’s. I look at it as being a lessons learned sort of story from a toxic household and how that can force an individual, or individuals like Chris and Carine to retreat and/or grow. You can tell by her expressions that she’d rather not be telling this story if it meant she could have her brother back. She mentions her other siblings but she only ever grew up with one.

How can you understand her brother when she didn,t understand him herlsef ? if she did know him she would have seen it coming .leaving his car on a river bed along with his identity cards and money pretty much gave it away on what was coming .She Knew shit about her brother and they were niot connected as much as she pretends . Its more her who feels that they were connected than anything else cause the his last messages never mentuioned her name but were all adressed to his mother . If they would ahve been connected so hard as she is trying to pretend he would have left her a message . the only time he mentioned her was in his last message when he said goodbye to his family and even then he did not mention her name specificly . I think that she is trying to convince herself that they were connected . Sometimes being clost doesn't mean connected
What's really eerie is that in the backdrop behind where Carine is sitting is the same area that Chris took his last picture, and looking at Carine in this video, God she looks so much like her brother.
Ms. McCandless, I think I know how difficult this video was for you. I want you to know how much I appreciated your willingness to speak about yourself and your brother. I hope you are able to find peace in your life. No matter what, your brother clearly tried to do the difficult introspective of his life. We are all imperfect, but few of us are willing to take the difficult journey of self-review. He was a person who apparently had lots of personal issues, but was willing to do the necessary introspection. Bless you both for your strength
I read the book several times when it came out. This is in my recommended list as I'd recently seen news re the buses removal. Carine is a good sister.
Thank you for sharing this video. Carine seems like a very sweet and lovely lady. She looks a lot like her brother. I've been fascinated by Chris' story since I saw a segment about it on 20/20 in the late 90s. I hope to travel to Alaska one day and visit the bus.
Very sorry about your family's loss. It didn't have to happen, I've been to the bus before and after he arrived there. When he was there I flew down low twice in about July, smoke was coming from the bus's stove. There was nobody visible wanting to leave, no nothing. Had he just done something simple as light the bus tires on fire, the black smoke would have drawn planes in the area. He had an assortment of options, but didn't use them. I live just north of the stampede road. If you wish to do good, then find out those options and tell people about them. The book/movie stated he wandered before finding the bus. That was pretty much impossible for him to do. We had close to 12' of snow that year, he came in on the snowmachine trail in the spring when the last trappers were done for the year. Without Snow Shoes, there was too much snow and he had no options at all but to walk in on the trail that led to the bus. The river was higher than normal because of the excessive snowfall that year, although it was always high in early summer from the snowmelt from the mountains, that year it was a bit more. Awesome story, thanks for sharing! On Chris' Wikipedia page (and I cross referenced) it states that in later 2014 they made a discovery about the potato seed. Chris ate this believing it was ok (in one of the plant books he brought) and it wasn't. He made a journal entry of his symptoms and blamed it on the potato seed, but because it was believed to be safe until 2014, that entry was kinda tossed aside. What I learned by this is that if we ate it, it'd be fine... but if Chris or anyone with a low calorie intake or suffering from malnutrition ate it it would result in weight loss and starvation no matter how much you ate and cause your legs to become paralyzed. I'm thinking that he died because of paralysis and couldn't move anymore. He did have some basic knowledge and was an incredibly deep thinker, and I find it hard to believe that he never thought of fire signaling. Who knows, I didn't know the guy and grew up from 16 years old on leading backpacking and kayak groups in the pictured rocks national lake shore area of the Michigan UP and took them at a very young age, so it was kinda second nature and to you too obviously. We'll never really know i guess!
Fogtender Prod supposedly he was following the dog sled trails and that’s how he ended up at the bus because the dogs go right by there. And when there’s snow usually you wouldn’t know your direction but he supposedly followed the dog tracks to find it to the bus?

That’s actually a great thing his sister states her brother would have never lit the forest on fire and if he did make a huge fire he would have been saved 100% but he didn’t even try but actually catching the tires on fire would have been the best distress signal ever. And he wasn’t harming the forest but I do believe he was hallucinating and ate poison but I believe he had to be soo weak because he weighed 140lbs and when found was 68lbs over half what he weighed. I mean right up the road was a pulley to get across the river and even further was a lodge so he didn’t wander to far ahead. Why? Probably sick and his journals are just a couple words not much like someone hallucinating and I mean he was probably out of his mind. Chris use to journal a lot but yet his last things said were just one word.
He had probably thought about all of those options. But maybe he thought is he light the bus on fire and no one noticed hed lose his shelter. Pretty sure if he light forest on fire he would go to jail for life too
i watched 2 times the movie...it was his Destiny and it was not in his hand to not come the end in this world..something took him to that way and his life end in the bus but he is still there and living forever because takes many people to there meet with his spirit..

Brave of her to make the journey to were her Brother met his end. I wonder how far the trail is beyond the Bus. Does it actually end at the Sushana River?. According to Google Maps deep into Denali Park (16 miles past the bus) it seems you have to be swept down MANY huge Rivers to get to the trail again. 27.5 Miles past the Bus, it ends. Now THAT'S a Journey.
I think the same way. Why not just make a signal fire? It's easy to say. And Carine has said Chris wouldn't wanna burn any of the Forrest to save himself. I just commented on the other video about this hike about looking for answers that I don't even know the questions to. But I think all the hindsight is what draws the interest. But I find it hard to not be inspired about the entire journey. Both Chris and Carines. It's amazing the impact chris had on the people that he met along his travels. Even ones he met for just a short time. You can't ignore that he had a profound affect on most he came in contact with. That's the real tragedy. Losing that type of person. That's why I think it's wonderful that Carine is providing the complete look at his journey. PR move, it's not about her, sure whatever. I can't see beyond the bravery and strength she possesses.
Chris should have known that in the wild there’s no mercy and I think he took it for granted I hate to say it but I’ve always felt this way about Chris and like his sister said he could be camping with her right now. If he took the right supplies and enough supplies and what not. You don’t have to climb Everest in your underwear? There’s ppl that do exactly what he did and are still alive to tell all their traveling stories today and still traveling but Chris cut himself short by giving himself not even the necessities he needed. Left his map and if he didn’t he would of known right down the river was a pulley system to get across and even a little further is a lodge.
Carine...I enjoyed u speaking. Cris taught me a lot with his journey. I cried when I learned he died, but I'm sure not nearly as u have. I feel he is still teaching where he is & smiling & loving. God bless u😊.
I used to teach wilderness survival back in the 80s to Boy Scouts. I've been a Hunter and a Gardener. I am still a fishermen and carpenter. I am a thinker and tinker. I can figure out most problems. But when the kid got out of the truck, and headed down the snow covered trail, his fate was sealed. He never would have survived the next winter. If you want to know how to survive in the wilderness, look up a movie called "Alone in the Wilderness". As for me, I know my limits, and don't push them too hard. I know I will get hate mail for this, but who cares. Yes, he was crazy, too think he could survive on his own, in the wilds of Alaska, with the equipment and skill set he had.

One thing is for sure, Krish never came here to die, suicide was not his nature, he knew what he was up to. Carrying gun with him also prove that he came for short visit for bullets were limited to. Keeping all the record of what he was doing and taking selfish, this all means he had a plan. In end he did made a final attempt but flooded river stop him.
@@bbs2183 If I am not mistaken, to this day with in a short walk of the bus was a usable cable tram across the river. Its what the locals used. But he never found it. The joy of not asking the locals and not getting a good map.
@@longrider42 sometimes you are overconfident and make mistakes and loose. Once I did the same mistake, I step off the trail into the wood and got lost, I had nothing on me, no backpack, no water, no food, nearest village was few miles away, but I didn't know the route or directions. Luckily I found animals tracks, one thing I knew was that either this will lead me into deeper or towards the village, with luck I pick the right direction. Little bit of knowledge with some luck and common sense, one can keep himself safe.😊

Where in WI are you from?i went to college in WI and i am from Minnesota ,though i currently am on my own type of soul searching expedition road trip..i went to salvation mountain and slab city (which i actually first learned about because of Chris' story in the movie "Into the wild" when i watched it 6years ago and have wanted to go there since-dream came true last week) and have spent a lot of time here in colorado. = ). Did you ever hike to the bus?? Carine...i feel like God has given you such wisdom and peace and strength,and ability to be so real honest which i am really thankful for;what a beautiful example I think you are. Thank you for writing your book and just trying to be honest and help others..and show truth as i think chris wanted/searched for .and now i am planning to go buy The wild truth. They towed out buses to live in while they built the road to a mine. When they failed to finish the road because it kept getting washed out, they pulled the buses out with a d8 dozer and snapped the axle on bus 142. They pushed it to the side of the road and left it.
I “thought” removing the bus was ridiculous. The money used to remove it could have been used to make travel to it safer. A simple bridge across; maybe a simple shelter along the way; a marked trail. Hikers could have paid a fee at the police or gas station. Alaska has a lot of dangerous places. If the same argument to remove the bus was used elsewhere, the whole state would be shut down including hunting. How many people die from hunting each year? Some get shot, lost, eaten, etc. How about climbing mountains, etc. That being said, I did see the bus a month or so ago. It’s at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. It was a really neat experience. I may go again.

I seriously have been wanting to go see the bus since I heard about Christopher's story... it truly is a remarkable story. I read that it isn't recommended to go if you aren't experienced with hiking and stuff, and Im not definitely not...lol. Im a city girl, but I just feel like I have to visit this place some time, some day, some way.
It has been moved. It was carried out by helicopter a couple of days ago. It has been taken to Healy where it has been stored safely until it's decided what will be done with it. Discussions on having on public display somewhere.

Because he was a total idiot with absolutely no outdoor experience. He was so deranged he thought his money was evil so he gave it away ($24K) and burned the rest of it. If he did have an INCH bag he probably wouldn't have died like he did. He could have survived long enough to wait for the river to recede and make his way back to his former miserable existence.
He was an experienced nomad. This was just a bridge too far. It is hindsight, but he should've done thorough reconnaissance of the river. There could've been a ford. Another poster said the snow was too deep. Also, he should've had a low temperature sleeping bag. He was using too much energy fighting the cold.

Chris was representative of the whiny 90s culture in which kids rebelled against their parents because their parents were not perfect. Lots of kids come from imperfect homes, but they don't go off the deep end.
That is an incorrect characterization, go off the deep end. He adopted a nomadic lifestyle quite successfully. He did not go there to die. He just went a step beyond his skill level._ Their childhood was not unusual. As part of that generation I can tell you. It was part of the cultural revolution of the 60s. Up until the 70s and 80s, everyone got married by the age of 22, and they stayed married, even though the situation was toxic. They simply had an affair, or lived separately, stayed in the closet etc, and kept up a facade.
Sure they do drugs, being the worst he chose this and it killed him he could have got away with this in the lower 48 but Alaska can be a bear if things go south and if it goes wrong experience will tell you enough! got to go !

the thing is that no matter what she thinks about her brother Christopher McCandless wasa bundle of lack of jugement at the minute he left home till when he died .He did not have the suvival skills need to go on this kind of journey in the northern environements .He did everything he could in oorder to meet his end by throwing everything he had and keeping only the strict minimum which is osmething you never do in northern sectors . he didn,t even know the first basics on how to conserve the meat from his animals that he killed . he should ahve known that no vegetation in the northern part of the planet contains the much need proteines for one to survive and the ones that do only the local animals can digest them after millions of years of evolving the digest system for it .who the hell carries so little food when he doesn,t even know how to preserve what he kills ? the fact is that meat gets wasted way before the maggots appear which already poisonned him before he saw the maggots .he had a book on how to find vegetations to feed but forgot to buy one that tells him what kind are available where he was heading . by the time he was going to die he couldn,t live on wild fruits cause the fruit season had been over since a few weeks and all of them were pretty much wasted to so what did he have left ? moose . Sadly in august is when moose start to mate and start to migrate and regroupe for winter so he wasn't going to see one anytime soon unless he new how to imitate the call whitch naturally he didn,t know how to do . The fact his that your brother no matter how much your father was abusif to him from some people say has nothing to do with every lack of jugements that he made from the very start till the end . I'm sorry but for your brother but he was maybe a hicker but he was no wilderness survivor at any time of his life and nore are you for that matter . You and your brother are what we call city parcs hickers , and you you may have the survival skills in the forest for a couple of days but thats about it . any ignorant can survive a few days in the woods but a couple of month totally disconnected from others you need to be specialised in survival skills not just have the basic ones . In order to preserve meat in the summer there is only one way and its to cut it in thin slabs and dry them up . with that alone your borther would have been able to survive until the river would have frozen whitch is rather quick to occur in alaska in early fall

He took off from home on an impulse which is already a mistake at the start but when he decided to move on to his alaska stage without even getting the proper knowledge before leaving the farm or even asking for advice from anyone and he even worse refused first hand some advice from a helping hand from someone who actually knows what its all about to live in the wild of alaska and knows the region very well , that is total stupidity . Mc Candless,s pride and arrogance is what killed him and he knew it at the end . The pride of feeling lower than others if he took advices from others and the arrogance of thinking he could conquer anything if he set his mind to it . Yes you can conquer pretty much anything but as long as you know what you are going to deal with in advance specially in the wild . Its not the animals that was the danger which he propbably thought all the time that it was its the environment . To answer the way you just did proves to me that you know nothing about survival in the wild .McCandless wasn't the first to die there nore in other wild countries and he hasn't been the last since .Thats why they took the Bus away so that people would stop trying to copy what he did and wouldn't cause expensive searches and rescues missions anymore and death .. Anyone with real survival skills will tell you that he was dummy and arrogant all the way . To invision such an adventure is one thing , to properly prepare for such an adventure is another . when you decide to go into car racing do you just buy a car and jump in the race or do you ask for info on the basics in order to even be able to start competing with other racers ? its the same thing when it comes to the wilderness . The kid thought that nature would provide him with all he needed in order to survive . Its not ''Would '' cause nature doesn't provide you with anything strait in your hands like your mom or dad does , it lays out what you need so you can survive but you need to get the knowledge to be able to find them and mostly how to handle them the right way . One exemple of that would be The Donner Expidition to california who decided to take a trail they should have never taken and no matter their renoun survival skills had many casualties Becasue of one fatal mistake , taking a trail that they were told not to take but listened to a bullshitter that told them to do it anyway casue it was shorter when in fact it was 150 miles longer than the original trail which caused them to get jamed i the mountains becasue of an early winter that caused a heavy snowstorm to block their passage giving them no choice but to settle in the mountains untill help arrived if they did eventually arrive . Like Mc Candless those people relied on their food supplies to make the trip but never figured that they would be stuck in the mountains for an entire winter which pushed them to resort to cannibalism since they had no basic survival skills for this kind of environment . They even killed two Indians that tried to help them so much they were starving . All this because they didn,t have the first notion of how to survive in the wild when they simply would have needed to ask those indians to show them how

The magic bus was airlifted by a large helicopter to an undisclosed location on June 18th, 2020. What McCandless did was so reckless and so irresponsible, it was borderline suicide. He not only killed himself, he hurt his own family and friends as well. Yet he is considered as a survivalist by some, and worshiped by others as a hero. It doesn't make any intelligent sense. Two people drown trying to reach the "sacred" 142 bus, and many others needed to be rescued by Search and Rescue. I'm glad the bus is gone. Hopefully people will now finally start to forget about the total loser McCandless, and the piece of junk bus.

My humble opinion: Carine and Chris are way more introspective and adventurous than most kids coming from physically and psychologically abusive and dysfunctional parents. It takes a heck of a pair of "balls" and "guts" to launch off far away from abusive parents. And do what they've done to this point. The psychological constraint that is put on a children's brain is enormous - Carine proved it that by saying that it took her SO MANY years, with even having Chris's story and movie as a "guide and support" to do what she does today and especially spell out the truth in her book.
I think they are both fortunate - to a certain point. And they both are incredibly respectable for their time and openness.
Indeed, Carine, the truth is a good 'modus operandi' and can hurt. But damn it, it's way better than discovering years later how deeply manipulated you were when as a child.

I agree 100%. Someday I'll do a book, maybe it'll be just like a journal exercise, but the amount of similarities are unreal. Even just watching/listing to this is an experience. I'm with you in that I believe most are taught either directly or indirectly to repress the past, and to not overcome it. Why? It's not only reliving it, but it's often a lifelong process as you're constantly feeling like you're behind, alienated, etc throughout this long reconciliation process. Many times you reach major breakthroughs, and you're so excited you want to share them, but nobody can relate. You then see others that may have gone through what you did, and you try to talk to them, but they're just gone, they don't want to go there, they have cemented a big scar tissue like defensive wall and only they can take it down. It's hard because you want to help them, sometimes you think you found the "cheat code" - Hey just read this, hey just listen to this, etc. I'd say that's the most difficult part for me is seeing people whom have been hurt participate in self destructive behavior and never truly find their ultimate gift and potential, which is one of our purposes... We are in this country, a toxic sea that benefits the few at the expense of the many, as corporations have it down to a formula to profit from learned self destructive behavior.

No, they are just adventurous in different ways. Chris just happened to be a physical 'runner'. My best friend is one. She's such a runner that she now works for an airline and she's going back to school to be a travelling nurse. There's this inability to rest in these people.

Imagine the whole world knows the flaws and faults of your family. Reparations would absolutely be deserved in that scenario. I think some respect should be held there.
I don’t so much look at it as Chris’ story as I do it being Carine’s. I look at it as being a lessons learned sort of story from a toxic household and how that can force an individual, or individuals like Chris and Carine to retreat and/or grow.
You can tell by her expressions that she’d rather not be telling this story if it meant she could have her brother back. She mentions her other siblings but she only ever grew up with one.

How can you understand her brother when she didn,t understand him herlsef ? if she did know him she would have seen it coming .leaving his car on a river bed along with his identity cards and money pretty much gave it away on what was coming .She Knew shit about her brother and they were niot connected as much as she pretends . Its more her who feels that they were connected than anything else cause the his last messages never mentuioned her name but were all adressed to his mother . If they would ahve been connected so hard as she is trying to pretend he would have left her a message . the only time he mentioned her was in his last message when he said goodbye to his family and even then he did not mention her name specificly . I read the book several times when it came out. This is in my recommended list as I'd recently seen news re the buses removal. Carine is a good sister.

Very sorry about your family's loss. It didn't have to happen, I've been to the bus before and after he arrived there. When he was there I flew down low twice in about July, smoke was coming from the bus's stove. There was nobody visible wanting to leave, no nothing.
Had he just done something simple as light the bus tires on fire, the black smoke would have drawn planes in the area. He had an assortment of options, but didn't use them. I live just north of the stampede road.
If you wish to do good, then find out those options and tell people about them.
The book/movie stated he wandered before finding the bus. That was pretty much impossible for him to do. We had close to 12' of snow that year, he came in on the snowmachine trail in the spring when the last trappers were done for the year. Without Snow Shoes, there was too much snow and he had no options at all but to walk in on the trail that led to the bus. The river was higher than normal because of the excessive snowfall that year, although it was always high in early summer from the snowmelt from the mountains, that year it was a bit more.

Awesome story, thanks for sharing! On Chris' Wikipedia page (and I cross referenced) it states that in later 2014 they made a discovery about the potato seed. Chris ate this believing it was ok (in one of the plant books he brought) and it wasn't. He made a journal entry of his symptoms and blamed it on the potato seed, but because it was believed to be safe until 2014, that entry was kinda tossed aside. What I learned by this is that if we ate it, it'd be fine... but if Chris or anyone with a low calorie intake or suffering from malnutrition ate it it would result in weight loss and starvation no matter how much you ate and cause your legs to become paralyzed. I'm thinking that he died because of paralysis and couldn't move anymore. He did have some basic knowledge and was an incredibly deep thinker, and I find it hard to believe that he never thought of fire signaling. Who knows, I didn't know the guy and grew up from 16 years old on leading backpacking and kayak groups in the pictured rocks national lake shore area of the Michigan UP and took them at a very young age, so it was kinda second nature and to you too obviously. We'll never really know i guess!

That’s actually a great thing his sister states her brother would have never lit the forest on fire and if he did make a huge fire he would have been saved 100% but he didn’t even try but actually catching the tires on fire would have been the best distress signal ever. And he wasn’t harming the forest but I do believe he was hallucinating and ate poison but I believe he had to be soo weak because he weighed 140lbs and when found was 68lbs over half what he weighed. I mean right up the road was a pulley to get across the river and even further was a lodge so he didn’t wander to far ahead. Why? Probably sick and his journals are just a couple words not much like someone hallucinating and I mean he was probably out of his mind. Chris use to journal a lot but yet his last things said were just one word.
He had probably thought about all of those options. But maybe he thought is he light the bus on fire and no one noticed hed lose his shelter. Pretty sure if he light forest on fire he would go to jail for life too

Brave of her to make the journey to were her Brother met his end. I wonder how far the trail is beyond the Bus. Does it actually end at the Sushana River?. According to Google Maps deep into Denali Park (16 miles past the bus) it seems you have to be swept down MANY huge Rivers to get to the trail again. 27.5 Miles past the Bus, it ends. Now THAT'S a Journey.

I think the same way. Why not just make a signal fire? It's easy to say. And Carine has said Chris wouldn't wanna burn any of the Forrest to save himself. I just commented on the other video about this hike about looking for answers that I don't even know the questions to. But I think all the hindsight is what draws the interest. But I find it hard to not be inspired about the entire journey. Both Chris and Carines. It's amazing the impact chris had on the people that he met along his travels. Even ones he met for just a short time. You can't ignore that he had a profound affect on most he came in contact with. That's the real tragedy. Losing that type of person. Chris should have known that in the wild there’s no mercy and I think he took it for granted I hate to say it but I’ve always felt this way about Chris and like his sister said he could be camping with her right now. If he took the right supplies and enough supplies and what not. You don’t have to climb Everest in your underwear? There’s ppl that do exactly what he did and are still alive to tell all their traveling stories today and still traveling but Chris cut himself short by giving himself not even the necessities he needed. Left his map and if he didn’t he would of known right down the river was a pulley system to get across and even a little further is a lodge.

I used to teach wilderness survival back in the 80s to Boy Scouts. I've been a Hunter and a Gardener. I am still a fishermen and carpenter. I am a thinker and tinker. I can figure out most problems. But when the kid got out of the truck, and headed down the snow covered trail, his fate was sealed. He never would have survived the next winter. If you want to know how to survive in the wilderness, look up a movie called "Alone in the Wilderness". As for me, I know my limits, and don't push them too hard. I know I will get hate mail for this, but who cares. Yes, he was crazy, too think he could survive on his own, in the wilds of Alaska, with the equipment and skill set he had.

@@bbs2183 If I am not mistaken, to this day with in a short walk of the bus was a usable cable tram across the river. Its what the locals used. But he never found it. The joy of not asking the locals and not getting a good map.

Once I did the same mistake, I step off the trail into the wood and got lost, I had nothing on me, no backpack, no water, no food, nearest village was few miles away, but I didn't know the route or directions.
Luckily I found animals tracks, one thing I knew was that either this will lead me into deeper or towards the village, with luck I pick the right direction.
Little bit of knowledge with some luck and common sense, one can keep himself safe.😊

How did the bus get there
Dominoe master miners left it
They towed out buses to live in while they built the road to a mine. When they failed to finish the road because it kept getting washed out, they pulled the buses out with a d8 dozer and snapped the axle on bus 142. They pushed it to the side of the road and left it.
I “thought” removing the bus was ridiculous. The money used to remove it could have been used to make travel to it safer. A simple bridge across; maybe a simple shelter along the way; a marked trail. Hikers could have paid a fee at the police or gas station.
Alaska has a lot of dangerous places. If the same argument to remove the bus was used elsewhere, the whole state would be shut down including hunting. How many people die from hunting each year? Some get shot, lost, eaten, etc. How about climbing mountains, etc.
That being said, I did see the bus a month or so ago. It’s at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. It was a really neat experience. I may go again.
JH: Ridiculous bullshit. The state isnt beholden to anyone, they removed the bus due to having to rescue so many misguided idiots like Chris before they wound up dead, like Chris. People need to stop living in a fairy tale and get used to reality. Yourself included.
I seriously have been wanting to go see the bus since I heard about Christopher's story... it truly is a remarkable story. I read that it isn't recommended to go if you aren't experienced with hiking and stuff, and Im not definitely not...lol. Im a city girl, but I just feel like I have to visit this place some time, some day, some way.
It has been moved. It was carried out by helicopter a couple of days ago. It has been taken to Healy where it has been stored safely until it's decided what will be done with it. Discussions on having on public display somewhere.

Because he was a total idiot with absolutely no outdoor experience. He was so deranged he thought his money was evil so he gave it away ($24K) and burned the rest of it. If he did have an INCH bag he probably wouldn't have died like he did. He could have survived long enough to wait for the river to recede and make his way back to his former miserable existence.
He was an experienced nomad. This was just a bridge too far. It is hindsight, but he should've done thorough reconnaissance of the river. There could've been a ford. Another poster said the snow was too deep. Also, he should've had a low temperature sleeping bag. He was using too much energy fighting the cold.

Chris was representative of the whiny 90s culture in which kids rebelled against their parents because their parents were not perfect. Lots of kids come from imperfect homes, but they don't go off the deep end.

That is an incorrect characterization, go off the deep end. He adopted a nomadic lifestyle quite successfully. He did not go there to die. He just went a step beyond his skill level._ Their childhood was not unusual. As part of that generation I can tell you. It was part of the cultural revolution of the 60s. Up until the 70s and 80s, everyone got married by the age of 22, and they stayed married, even though the situation was toxic. They simply had an affair, or lived separately, stayed in the closet etc, and kept up a facade.
Sure they do drugs, being the worst he chose this and it killed him he could have got away with this in the lower 48 but Alaska can be a bear if things go south and if it goes wrong experience will tell you enough! got to go !

the thing is that no matter what she thinks about her brother Christopher McCandless wasa bundle of lack of jugement at the minute he left home till when he died .He did not have the suvival skills need to go on this kind of journey in the northern environements .He did everything he could in oorder to meet his end by throwing everything he had and keeping only the strict minimum which is osmething you never do in northern sectors . he didn,t even know the first basics on how to conserve the meat from his animals that he killed . he should ahve known that no vegetation in the northern part of the planet contains the much need proteines for one to survive and the ones that do only the local animals can digest them after millions of years of evolving the digest system for it .who the hell carries so little food when he doesn,t even know how to preserve what he kills ? the fact is that meat gets wasted way before the maggots appear which already poisonned him before he saw the maggots .he had a book on how to find vegetations to feed but forgot to buy one that tells him what kind are available where he was heading . by the time he was going to die he couldn,t live on wild fruits cause the fruit season had been over since a few weeks and all of them were pretty much wasted to so what did he have left ? moose . Sadly in august is when moose start to mate and start to migrate and regroupe for winter so he wasn't going to see one anytime soon unless he new how to imitate the call whitch naturally he didn,t know how to do .

You and your brother are what we call city parcs hickers , and you you may have the survival skills in the forest for a couple of days but thats about it . any ignorant can survive a few days in the woods but a couple of month totally disconnected from others you need to be specialised in survival skills not just have the basic ones . In order to preserve meat in the summer there is only one way and its to cut it in thin slabs and dry them up . with that alone your borther would have been able to survive until the river would have frozen whitch is rather quick to occur in alaska in early fall

The kid thought that nature would provide him with all he needed in order to survive . Its not ''Would '' cause nature doesn't provide you with anything strait in your hands like your mom or dad does , it lays out what you need so you can survive but you need to get the knowledge to be able to find them and mostly how to handle them the right way .

Many of those who decided to go in their little corner of the wilderness of alaska died at first casue they had no knowledge what so ever about alaska's wilderness . you're not talking of wilderness in Arizona my friend thats totally different from Alaska and even the one in Arizona can be dangerous to try to suvive in it . One exemple of that would be The Donner Expidition to california who decided to take a trail they should have never taken and no matter their renoun survival skills had many casualties Becasue of one fatal mistake , taking a trail that they were told not to take but listened to a bullshitter that told them to do it anyway casue it was shorter when in fact it was 150 miles longer than the original trail which caused them to get jamed i the mountains becasue of an early winter that caused a heavy snowstorm to block their passage giving them no choice but to settle in the mountains untill help arrived if they did eventually arrive . Like Mc Candless those people relied on their food supplies to make the trip but never figured that they would be stuck in the mountains for an entire winter which pushed them to resort to cannibalism since they had no basic survival skills for this kind of environment . They even killed two Indians that tried to help them so much they were starving . All this because they didn,t have the first notion of how to survive in the wild when they simply would have needed to ask those indians to show them how

He went on a great adventure and touched many lives. Haven't you ever been arrogant to think you could do something you were not prepared for? Maybe when you were younger? I think that McCandless was lost a bit and was trying to find himself and yes, technically you're correct. But his story is in the coming of age as a young man that wants to find his place in the circle. He died trying to find himself and he did so admiring how perhaps yourself and many others in Alaska and in the backcountry have lived. It's tough living. Chris was naive, but he was no bum. At least he lived the last couple of years of his life happy and doing what he wanted to do. It's nothing knew about his lack of prep, we all know that, and yes, IF he had a map, IF he had more experience, if if if.....we know. That fact is part of his legacy and message that others get from his story. But another part of his story is about him as a person and his journey and THAT is what people talk about and want to know.
People say he was crazy because only a crazy person would do the things he did. Had he died in the sea of cortez he would be just another drowning victim with a half weird story. Instead, he made his ill prepared way all the way to Alaska and died of starvation on an old bus. This isnt romantic. This isnt inspiring. Well, maybe to idiotic city kids, but anyone with any sort of hunting skills or woodcraft knows this was a fools errand he was on and it cost him his life. The magic bus was airlifted by a large helicopter to an undisclosed location on June 18th, 2020. What McCandless did was so reckless and so irresponsible, it was borderline suicide. He not only killed himself, he hurt his own family and friends as well. Yet he is considered as a survivalist by some, and worshiped by others as a hero. It doesn't make any intelligent sense.
Two people drown trying to reach the "sacred" 142 bus, and many others needed to be rescued by Search and Rescue. I'm glad the bus is gone. Hopefully people will now finally start to forget about the total loser McCandless, and the piece of junk bus.
