Then you don't understand human behavior. How many American humans do what Chris did? An astronomically small amount. Was what Chris did detrimental to his health? Yes. When someone does something that almost no one else does that is causing themselves harm, it's called abnormal behavior. This indicates pathology of some kind. What exactly it was, we don't know, but his sister has claimed that their parents were abusive. If true, this means Chris suffered trauma as a child that could have led to any number of mental disorders that caused him to act in subversively harmful towards himself. He dissociated from society and possibly from himself. Don't ever speak on someone's state of mind without education yourself first.

@@goranabdulqadir6555 I think he’d agree with you, Chris, that is.. at the end of the movie he writes a rebuttal to his reasoning for his adventure. “Happiness is only real when shared”
I don’t think anyone disagrees that he didn’t make a mistake, just a mile North was a River crossing so fording it was kind of pointless and he would have known that if he had a map but he didn’t..
The point being, how do you go somewhere that no one has gone before when everything has already been mapped? Simple, you just discard the map..
He was a runner in highschool and they would go on runs to specifically get lost, find their bearings and then make their way back using nothing but backtracking.. I used to do these when I was younger, the coach would give you a map and compass but only a few would actually keep those pieces of gear..

Emotional and sometimes physical abuse happened to my siblings, my mother and I. My sister moved away through marriage but my Dad really damaged my brother and he couldn't go anywhere. He got cancer at age 42 and passed away. I know that cancer happens to so many people. With my brother, I think my father's actions ate him up on the inside. He was a strong man but also very sensitive and wore his heart on his sleeve. I think that my father's actions killed him. My brother and I are really similar. I tried to escape my life but it has finally caught up to me. It's killing me too. Chris was smart. Even though what he did killed him, he died free. Not eaten alive. In a way he's my hero. Watched 'Into the Wild' for the second time recently and it has stayed with me. I now have the luxury of time to research and consider the story. I have read a lot of angry, sometimes offensive and personal views about Chris, his story and his sister Carine's actions from people who are unqualified (and many inexperienced in life). This talk from Chris's sister Carine, apart from being powerful in its own right, has put to rest most of the questions the film left me asking myself. She comes across as someone who likes who she is, though not always what she does but has learned to forgive herself, without bitterness. I hope some day she is able to reconcile her relationship with her parents if that is her wish.
I would like to extend my thanks to her for sharing something so personal.

Back in high school, as Carine mentioned, Into the Wild was a required reading. I thought it would just be another tedious homework assignment. Little did I know that the book has completely changed my life. Chris's story resonates with me. I was brought up overseas, moved to the States during my teenage years to live with my parents. They were abusive. Shortly after I turned 18, I moved out to live on my own. Through Chris's story, I found consolation. Even with an unfortunate childhood, I know I can be strong and passionate about life. As I'm re-reading this book twelves years later, I realize his adventurous spirit and disregard towards material possessions have already infused deeply into my life. Thank you Chris, your spirit will live on.

Sorry, but I despise sayings like that *_so_* much. We can want things that we simply _can't_ reach or attain, no matter how hard we may try - and the attempts _can_ harm us much more than simply realizing that those dreams will remain dreams. Sure, failed attempts _can_ also have good side effects, but even then, making it seem like we'll be able to get what we set out to get can break us.
What we need to do is find ways to figure out whether something is worth reaching for, whether it's attainable or worth getting broken over - and what is best left a dream. Happiness is no attaining everything we want, happiness is getting _some_ things that we want and finding the mindset to be happy with what we can get.

I read Into the Wild as a part of my English course at school. I liked it so much that I bought my own copy of it, along with The Wild Truth. I am currently halfway through The Wild Truth, and I think Carine McCandless has introduced another level of love. People love pizza, have girlfriends or boyfriends, marry, divorce, break up, separate, etc. The bond that that is described between brother and sister seems way more powerful than even the most faithful romances. I've read well over a hundred books and have never read anything more powerful than the thoughts and feeling Carine McCandless so generously shares. It's the only book I've ever read that has truly made me cry.

I read “Into The Wild” a long time ago, and I always had questions about made Chris do what he did. Now I know the rest of the story! So similar to the story of my life! I can’t find the words that truly say how lucky I feel I am , for accidentally stumbling on this explanation fo his real life. Thank you so much for telling the REAL story of your brother. Now it up to me to try not to make the same mistakes.

I see Chris as a cautionary tale. Sure, take a year off to explore the country before settling down to a job and family ... But be prepared, and be realistic. You can care about nature, but nature doesn't care about you. There are hundreds of ways to die in the woods; learn from the mistakes of others.

Nice to meet you. Name is Christopher John anderson. Married to the lady in the picture. Grew up rich and violent. Divorced from my family and left at 13. Was homeless until enlisting in the navy. Mostly lived in the woods. Blah blah. I actually talk to my mother these days. Though not much. I like my family better. She is actually the one that told me I should check out the into the wild story. Just watched it on Netflix for the first time a couple days ago. Very weird. Uncanny. My little sister thinks so to. She also left our family for the same reasons. Though also occasionally talks to our mother. She was the only one I kept in contact with all those years. But now she's the one I worry about. She didn't get away until graduating high school. She's been going down a dark path for a few years now. Just as I came out of mine and started a family. She scares me. She's five years younger than me. She's just as stubborn but not as skilled and she trusts to much. Hopefully she will be ok. If she makes it to 30 like I did, she will be fine I think.

When I first saw the movie and read the book, I saw a lot of myself in Chris. My parents weren't physically abusive exactly, but the mental strain of their toxicity was enough for me to consider them mentally abusive. When I called them out they gas lit me into feeling like I made it up or imagined it for years. People really need to consider whether getting married and having kids is right for them, as their actions can have long lasting effects.

Sometimes, parents themselves get so engrossed in their domestic fights that they don't realize how much their actions/words affect the kids. The guilt that Chris felt is very painful. When parents say things that make you feel responsible for their suffering, the kids start to feel helpless and guilty. I think Chris just went away silently to find peace and maybe reflect upon things. I think he wanted to enjoy the quietness and think freely. In his last days he expressed his gratitude for the happy moments in his life. He was grateful for the happy things in his life.
