Retro Gaming Firstly, yes. The way he overcomes his disability daily is absolutely inspiring. Unbelivably inspiring. As it should be. And if you can't see that, it's your problem. Because I look at someone with a disability and that disability is apparent to me does not make me a bad person. It makes me realistic. There is nothing noble about ignoring such an obvious handicap. There is something to be said however, for seeing a handicap and then being able to look past it and seeing that how an individual handles their handicap so well and so optimistically absolutely adds to the inspiration, not detracts from it. The fact that I can look at him as an entire individual, as a whole, disability and all, is not a fault. It's part of what makes him who he is. And though it's not the only part, not by a long shot, I would venture to say it's a pretty damn big part. Secondly, he would be inspiring even without the disability. The kid is 17 and speaks with the intelligence and eloquence of someone twice his age or older. His maturity and world view are admirable qualities. So get off your high horse and don't make insinuations about why I would consider him an inspiration, when the truth is you don't have the vaguest notion as to what I find inspiring about this young man. Take your nonsense elsewhere.
Brandon J I was referencing your value to his maturity in relation to his disability, not to how he is inspiring. He is inspiring, and I was inspired by him because of his unbelievable strength and optimistic behavior. But he speaks exactly like many people around my age, 15-18, and I have seen many people younger than him speak that way and people are saying that he's mature when they aren't really looking at his maturity but the fact that he's on Ted talks and has a disability. It just annoyed me because people don't compare his maturity to a general population and instead say he's mature because of a disability. Just scroll down the comment section, many people are saying the exact same thing you originally said when it doesn't matter and it, again, annoyed me.
Retro Gaming That's patently ridiculous. I wasn't tying his maturity to his disability. And nothing I wrote should've led you to that conclusion. If you speak eloquently, then I congratulate you. But if you believe most kids that age speak so verbosely and with such diction, then you're naive. I have younger brothers and younger cousins around the same age and very few of them speak so well. I know relatively few adults that speak English the way it's meant to be spoken.

According to the video's description, it's already been just over 10 years since we lost him. It's remarkable that he never let his condition take him over, and he fought proudly. I think pretty much the same way he did, in that you should always give yourself something to look forward to, and just be brave. In his 17 years of life, he truly made an impact. A huge one, at that. Rest easy, Sam. ❤️
Eventhough he seemed nervous, he had the courage to go on TEDx and perform in for hundreds of people live, and millions of people online. He is truly living his life to the fullest. Cool dude +1
Seeing this Ted Talk after his death made me realize that he had given this inspiring speech a month before he passed away because of his disease Progeria. Sam stayed positive even with the realization every day could be his last. He was a true fighter, a strong person and I believe we can be as strong as him! Being so strong starts with his philosophy, so let's be happy together for Sam. Do you wanna join me?

Sam passed away not even a month after this was posted 😢. The fact that there are still new comments, likes, and views on this video daily, almost a decade after it was posted, shows just how meaningful and impactful he was to so many in his short time alive. What an amazing kid.

Learning that he passed away shortly after this talk was posted was like a punch in the chest. What a pure soul we all would have loved to have known. What an inspiration you are, Sam.
Finding out that he died after watching the full video made my heart drop and made the impact of his words tenfold. I feel so much for these beautiful souls who deserve so much more than they got from this world yet gave back everything they had to give and we are still being gifted with such positive impact. Thank you Sam. You may not have lived to become an engineer or a doctor but you are operating a huge influence on people every single day.
I feel a seepage in my faith at moments like this. They say the good die young, but he was afflicted right from the start. I do not question God, but the word why still rattles around within me. This young man had wisdom beyond his years, maybe that was his purpose. Like you, I pray he is at peace.
I don't believe in wibbly ethereal/divine Magic souls but people like this and occasions like this make me wish there were souls/proof of souls. There's no proof either way. But times like these? A soul would be something comforting to believe in.
@@ToeMunchEnja I believe I know how you feel. I too wrestle with certain possibilities and being a practical man coming to terms with my own experiences proved very difficult. I can't nor would I try to convince you because you have to have your own experience. Word alone is not enough, even if you did experience something you might think you're in need of medication. I am not talking psychics or spiritual meetings, I can only tell you of my parent's experiences. My father died in 1973 but six weeks before he told my mother his sister Amy came to him. she sat down on the bed just before father left the bedroom and told him it was time for him to prepare for his passing. She made two visits. After my father passed away it was mid-1984 whilst my mother was watching television when she saw my father sat opposite her. she thought she was losing her mind and left the room. She returned with a cup of tea but father was still there. This continued for the next eighteen months every two months or so, my mother passed away in 1986. My sister received visitations from our mother apparently to let her know she was alright, I never received any such visits. I cannot prove or disprove these claims, but when I was stationed in Germany I was on duty on my own when I had a number of experiences that were beyond explanation. However, I ventured to mention to fellow troop members what had happened and was told, "why do you think duty was taken in the guardroom". I have no explanation as to what happened, but suffice it say, it was not pleasant. This probably proves nothing to you as it's just my word, but I know what I saw and I would not try to convince you one way or the other. Justin.

Sam is one amazing person. And so must his family be... a child like this had to have "can do" parents who are themselves positive and emotionally healthy. Thank you to Sam's parents. Your son is an inspiration, even after his passing.
I'm not crying, I've been taking notes. At 78, I can still learn from a 17-year-old who died 7 years ago! During this pandemic, we have all been focused on the things we can't do. I'm changing my story as of now.
@Janis Joplin Having lost two brothers-in-law to Covid-19, I know the danger is real. I have found it useful in life to be able to learn from others' mistakes; saves having to catch everything myself.
I am equally inspired by Sam and saddened by his passing just a month after this talk. I had no idea his disease was so aggressive that he wouldn't make it to college. He seemed and was so vital. What a spirit. We need millions more Sam's - not with Progeria but with his profound wisdom. Job well done by his parents, family and friends as well. None of us live in a vacuum and all of us should be so lucky as to have lived as full a life as Sam did despite it's seeming sort length.
My first reaction upon discovering that he passed away shortly after this was: "what a shame; he didn't get to change the world". Then I looked at the 38 million plus views of people searching for happiness and l laughed at myself...
Sam Berns was a brave, wise & amazing young man. 10 Jan 2014, He passed away but leaving a legacy. Rest in Peace Sam Berns. Please be respectful in your comments
He is a true fighter. He fought with his negative thoughts, the society, the feelings of abnormal in front of school friends, teachers and staffs. He is a true inspiration.
Yeah, that's not worded right lol. He is respectable, and sure he has some good points, but understand them. Don't just give him respect because he is tslking on this show.
The fact that he’s wiser and smarter than most people, and holds a stronger mentality than many people who don’t face his challenges, truly showed his ability to change the world, like he has. Rest in peace, Sam.
Why is it that those who experience deviations, pain, suffering, and all bad things in this world can be so wise? It's because they know how to appreciate life, appreciate the world, appreciate everyone, appreciate everything. He went through so much but seems as if he had never despised anything at all. He truly is such a wise kid (I'm younger tho). At least it's satisfying enough for me to see that he spent his final days and months happy and well. He even got to enjoy how it feels to graduate from highschool, how's that for something.
It makes me think that impactful people have a purpose and once they complete it they leave, almost somehow magical, but you come to the understanding that the more difficult the struggle is the higher is the success...

I had a disabled child who died. He suffered dreadfully but was the bravest, most cheerful little warrior! He really taught everybody the meaning of the word LOVE. But some people told me after he died that he was better off dead. They didn't see that he was an angel of love. People, please think about disabled people differently!
Eleanor Smithwick you are so brave. Thank you for sharing your story with the internet. I am truly sorry, strong people really make a difference in this world.
Those people are idiots. That's hurtful & wrong. I have a friend, one of my very best lifelong friends who is disabled. He's an absolute blessing, funny, & smart. Wiser than most. Just hard to get him out of his shell. My friends are his friends & so on. I could go on...Also, another friend who is deaf, epileptic, & in a wheelchair. Amongst other things. Perspective. I met him a longtime ago because he's my father's friends son. Truthfully we all joke that he's the sanest one in that family, but he really is. Both of these friends of mine have had a profound effect on my life. Great human beings. The term special is true because they are special. Sam is a powerful force for good. He's shining on in the afterlife.
It took about 10 seconds for this kid grasp my attention and see his strength. His humour, happiness, intelligence, and the wisdom beyond his years is something truly amazing. He deserved a long and full life. Rest in peace, Sam. You were an incredible person.
Don’t forget the parents. They did a good job, with lots of love and encouragement to raise this wonderful, well adjusted person, despite his disabilities. Imagine the sadness, worries, hopes and hard work they had to endure. Then to lose him eventually.
What made me cry was the fact that he was holding on his tears for a long time. No one else can do that. I wish I could hug this superhero. I don't know where are you, but I am pretty sure, you've changed the life of ~19 million viewers.

Some people must have a very sad life to give that amazing young man a thumbs down. Its sad really they don't have anything nicer to do with there time. The world would be a better place if they were like Sam. Be kind !
Based on the replies to your comment, and your comment, I feel thankful that dislikes were removed. One month later from what you wrote, and they are gone. Never thought I'd Appreciate that change one bit. Thank you for writing this comment.
It puts me to tears knowing he passed away exactly a month after this TEDx because he would have gone on to accomplish all of the goals he mentioned. He's definitely more intellectually-focused than I was at 17. The people who have to make the most sacrifices are the ones that have the most heart & often don't get to stay with us long enough to see those dreams all come to fruition, but he's already made such a remarkable impact that his spirit undoubtedly will live on.
The amount of intelligence Sam possesed at the age of 17 is very inspiring. We need more people like Sam who possess the inteligence to change the world and who possess a heart of gold.
9 years later and this young man has definitively had a greater effect on the world than any of his peers that outlived him. Just for trying to be a healthy, happy human being. The brightest of lights really do burn the shortest.
Man I cry every time I watch this. I come back to it when I'm feeling very low or despair to remind myself how lucky I am to be alive and decently healthy. It reminds me to focus on a brighter future ahead. More effective than any drug or anti-depressant. I love his soul. Sam you will forever be an inspiration to us all. I wish I could have known you in person and have hugged you. You saved me. God bless you.
even with his condition i can see he had such spirit and nothing was gonna hold him down. its sad that this can happen to people that deserves the world
This Man is a Beautiful creation of this human race. He is obviously so much older in intelligence then 17. This is absolutly the best story I have heard in a long time
Sam's philosophies are inspring to everyone, not only to those who has a severe desease but also us healthy people who still have too much annoyance and dissatisfaction towards life.We should all be more optimistic like him. (Daniel, 17 y.o., China)
I gotta be honest, I cried when I realized people suffering from progeria only live till they're 20, which means he only had 2 or 3 years left to live at the time, but still he stood in front of the crowd sharing his philosophy knowing he would die anytime soon. Sam, I really admire you, love you and genuinely want to hug you, I wish you were living a happy life like you wanted on the other side of the world. Once again, I love you, Sam.
I tried and they were bastards, so I don't surrond myself by them. Surround yourself by people who you like and who respect you, want to be friend with you and appreciate you as you them.
I don't think the fact he passed out a month later is depressing, of course the fact he left the world makes us sad, but by sending a message before he died makes me think his purpose on earth was somehow achieved through that, and I think it'll be more depressing to have spent a longer but less aware of happiness life than a short but truly enjoyed life like he (I hope) did.
Even in life, he was such an angel. May God bless him and keep him resting in eternal peace. His life was a blessing and still is a true blessing to all of us, including his wonderful family and friends and those of us who have been fortunate to have listened to his story of inspiration. Now that he's in heaven, his spirit, his love, his positive philosophy of life, and his dreams live in all of us. What a true gift to humanity. Thank you, Sam, may you rest in peace!
I'm currently suffering with PTSD from my war time service in Afghanistan. Thank you wise man for your words, your impact for such a young man is commendable. We have our own hinderances in life and you young man are an inspiration to me.
Ryan, the struggle is real, but there is hope. I didn't get diagnosed and get help until my 40s. I just surrendered to it and asked for help, and I received it. Prolonged Exposure Therapy is what helped me. Never give up and do not believe the thoughts - they are not real. There is hope!
We haven’t forgotten Sam or his parents/Doctors. I hope the Doctors realize how much Sam and you brought to the world. Sam was a joy and an absolute gift to all of us. I wish you all the best and peace in your heart. 06/01/2024

The fact that he died a month after this really makes me mad. This boy was so good and positive. He was so innocent. I hope his soul is at peace.
Justin.

Why is it that those who experience deviations, pain, suffering, and all bad things in this world can be so wise? It's because they know how to appreciate life, appreciate the world, appreciate everyone, appreciate everything. He went through so much but seems as if he had never despised anything at all.
He is an angel ...now perfect and with the almighty Father,Son, and Holy Spirit ! 💎❤️🙏🏻💕
It’s as if he was meant to spread this amazing message, for those who loose hope and want to enjoy life, yeah you’re definitely right
This is what my intuition said too
Agree...and his message are trully a beautiful one 😇
I'm currently suffering with PTSD from my war time service in Afghanistan. Thank you wise man for your words, your impact for such a young man is commendable. We have our own hinderances in life and you young man are an inspiration to me.
u are strong... God bless..✨ hope u get well soon.. sirr....
2 packs of porridge will sort your bitchTSD out pal
Being an Afghan, I want to say we are all in the same boat of existence
Ryan, the struggle is real, but there is hope. I didn't get diagnosed and get help until my 40s. I just surrendered to it and asked for help, and I received it. Prolonged Exposure Therapy is what helped me. Never give up and do not believe the thoughts - they are not real. There is hope!
And you to me. Please hang in their knowing your not alone in your struggles. Together we can overcome our pain and struggles.
Life is so short. Sam's talk is inspiring and his legacy lives on.

We haven’t forgotten Sam or his parents/Doctors. I hope the Doctors realize how much Sam and you brought to the world. Sam was a joy and an absolute gift to all of us. I wish you all the best and peace in your heart. 06/01/2024
I went to school with this kid I remember always seeing him in the halls just always seeing a smile on his face no matter what... Miss you man Rest easy💜
+Matty i Think he was a cheerful person and clever, he's a great loss to his family and to the world
Just a shame that bullshit exists then I guess
+anglekan. I am in love with you!
+Vibe Matty what was he like and what you guys do for sam , i want to know
+BloodyGeek Always a positive kid! He was always on the daily announcements he was very brave I never had the courage to speak Infront of people... When he passed away The school alongside with people he impacted people would put his initials (SB) on whatever they could... Sports teams had it in there socks and many others had it on there clothing... Also around the school in various places!
Maybe ironic, but he’s healthier than a lot of us...at least on the inside. Godspeed!
Do you mean mentally?
Garfield yes, as far as mentally and his approach towards life. Somewhat analogous to a blind person who compensates in heightened senses of smell, taste and touch.
He had to figure out that things in a shorter time, we are fortunate of having a little more time to do it, but we don't appreciate it until we see people like him
