Is no one gonna talk about how her teacher predicted she would be a great leader in the future Edit: Guys ik the teacher didn't actually predict that but I thought it'd be fun to point out
No, because the thing is, prophecy is easy. You can just predict _everyone_ will be "a great leader" or whatever. For all the people who don't turn out that way, your prediction will be forgotten or they'll blame themselves for not living up to expectations or whatever, so all the times you were wrong won't come up. But the one time you happen to be right, suddenly, BAM, you're a prophet because you "predicted the future."

Bringing those kind of memories up again or having them brought up is the worst feeling for any person that went through something horrible. It makes you relive everything and feel the pain again. I'm astonished she handled it so well.

Yes, of course. Imagine someone calling you out in front of all your peers, berating you, talking down on you for not getting a good grade in class or not doing a good job at work. Why are people saying she’s fake crying? It’s hard to talk about trauma and the fact she is up there saying it confidently is amazing she is so strong. Respect her for that
Amy Rani she’s at a Ted Talk. Of course, the speakers at these events have to prepare what they’re going to talk about, but most of it is from her mind too. It’s easier to talk about your experiences than facts. But the fact that she recalls this memory so vividly shows that it really pierced her memories. It was a very significant thing that happened to her.
The story just isn't believable. If you grew up in a society where beltings and beatings are the norm, you wouldn't become disillusioned or deeply offended by it as a child because everybody around you accepts it as normal. You wouldn't even see it as being wrong if you were born and raised in such a culture. You are right in your assertion, but that doesn't make this particular one more real than the others that are fake. Only the faker knows that they are fake, regardless of the volume of tears shed. Tears don't mean much. They are just tears and nothing more. If judges go by tears, our prisons will be empty. Not every pair of glasses you see on people is prescribed. The woman who offered a tissue to Lilia when she was crying, at 14:20, made me smile. She realizes how difficult this story is to tell, and is understanding to why she is crying.
Slippery slope. Where’s the line between religion and cult? There are tons of evangelical homes in the US who treat their children very similarly to what she described.
naomi abu a cult is literally defined as “a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object”. That’s also what a religion is. Just cause it’s widespread and accepted doesn’t stop it from being a cult.
Ragnar Sims I typed “definition of a cult” into google and that’s what came up, and that’s from oxford languages. I never said it was a bad thing, only that religions are cults whether they’re widespread and peaceful or small and extreme. When you look at the origin of the word, it meant things like worship which is a very important and respected aspect of religion. Nowadays a cult is typically used in reference to negative examples, and common religions try to avoid the word in order to maintain their reputation. But as a word it isn’t positive or negative, it only references devotion towards a figure or object - that’s what a religion is, just as much as a typical ‘cult’.
“And I thought...that’s not love.” Absolutely heartbreaking. I’m crying. But wow, what a brave and intelligent woman. I want to read this book she wrote now.
What is love? Letting the child do whatever he wants? Giving him whatever he wants? Is discipline not love? One man's discipline is another man's abuse.
Ronnie Burns Physical abuse is not discipline, a stern word should be discipline enough. If the child doesn't respond to verbal discipline, you've done something wrong as a parent
As I said, discipline and abuse are subjective. As a practical matter, it is never wise to try to discipline someone else's kids. Why? Because no one ever agrees on what discipline is appropriate and necessary. I would assume that most people you know disagree with your methods of discipline as well. Either believing you are too soft, or too harsh. And from the sounds of it, if you have children at all, I would bet anything, that everyone thinks you are too soft, that you let your kids get away with too much, and that they are a bunch of spoiled, entitled brats, who probably need a good whoopin.
chris sonofpear1 because humans are flawed. The Church is run by people who can fall into sin just like anyone else. Oh, and I would like it if you would elaborate on the supposed flaws in heaven.
I can relate to her pain. I was in a religious cult for only 7 yrs which I make videos on now. She crying she has is from PTSD. Its not whiny or bratty, its the consequence of the abuse. My heart goes out to her
because the abuse is ingrained so deep that remembering it brings out really visceral reactions. Certain smells to this day will make me feel sick or make me start crying in fear. I wasn't in a cult, but I was abused.
I wonder if I have PTSD, reading this comment string... I (and many other students) was abused by my teachers. If you didn’t obey them you became the “bad” student, and “good” students were basically treated like they could do no wrong, even if they started it. This woman is so smart.... I can’t believe she was able to see through the lies she was taught as a child, especially so young. I feel like grown adults can’t see through these lies
Smart people get sucked in all the time - many of the “ads” or whatever are often not based in rationality or logic. It’s more of an appeal to emotion more than anything, and if you’re really good at pulling the strings, you can make the brainwashing seem like nothing. And then there’s leaving the group: I’m speaking about cults at large, not just this cult, but they often make leaving seem like a terrible thing. Like they’ll lose their salvation or how they’re leaving their “true” family. (Being the social people we are, being told that leaving is ostracised and exocommunicating is super tough.) And don’t let me get started on rationalising. From little things to horrifying, they can often find their ways to excuse their lies or other terrible things they do. Like “the bad is outweighed by the good!” or “remember, if you report to the police/authorities about the actions of the leader, we’ll suffer an eternity of damnation.”
I don’t believe that that the Bible is a lie but I do believe that those people are not who they say they are. If they where Christians they would love each other and protect each other.
Wow...I remembered my young self when I was 10 yrs old. My parents were converted into a cult. I felt sad and crying while I was watching this talk. My parents died penniless, because they gave their money as donations to the cult, as promised by the leaders that when they died they go to heaven.
I showed my Dad this. We are a family of Christians. He was working on a project so he wasn’t watching at the start, he was just listening to her story about her happy memories like the Celebration Party, and her first report, and when he heard “We don’t want women like you”, it caught his attention and he stopped working and looked up at the screen, in shock. This video saddened him, knowing how bad the teaching at Gloriavale is. My parents tell me regularly that I am worth so much, because God created me and loves me, and they love me. They have never given me any doubt of my self-worth.
To the people who's commenting that this looks fake, the only parts that sounded too acted for me were when she was describing how she loved her life there. I think that she probably wanted to show to people her feelings of when she loved it, making them feel connected so that after it they understood how polarizing is emotional abuse and brainwash, but she probably can't think of that place as a happy one anymore, so it sounded fake everytime. Everytime she started crying and describing bad things, it just looked really genuine.
Exactly! Gloriavale has such a popular reputation so much controversies derived from there. A grand daughter of THE founder who runs this cult?? Imagine mentioning her name with her old members or "leaders" she once knew and they completely shunned her name.
The Bible says "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Most people take that to mean "Don't be selfish," but it works both ways. You should love your neighbor, but you should also love yourself, which the people at Gloriavale seem to have conveniently forgotten.
Also bible says what you should do with people who don't believe in your god, "...Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man." (Numbers 25)

Miss.Phoenixx It reminded me of myself, as a 3 year old everyone I knew was the same religion as me, and I came up with the conclusion that religion is a crutch for people's fear of death. The trolls are people and being aware of your fellow citizens is just kinda part of being a good citizen. The trolls may sometimes be insincere but I do think a video like this triggers the repressive to have a go. It's important to see how that happens and respond appropriately. So many hearts have been shattered by similar upbringings that the threat of freedom can be anathema.
Hmm, she is definitely smart and brave, but the way she can switch in an instant from total happiness to sorrow and tears seems like an act to make the story more appealing. Anyway those thinks she lived in should stay in past and has no place in today's modern world.
@Károly Papp That is the stupidest thing I've read all week, and that includes Trumps' tweets. Never heard of "shared grief is half the sorrow" I guess?
@Károly Papp Perhaps you're dealing with something yourself? Public speaking in general is the second biggest fear in society coupled with trauma, I think she's brave and overcame those traumas. If this was fake why does she express emotion the way she does?
I notice how quickly the presumed psychopaths out themselves on the comments on here by trying to shame her about her 'acting' and about any making money off of this. It's pretty typical (their self-projecting, I mean). Obviously they have no idea what she was going through, or maybe some of them do but are trying to cast doubt upon her. It only works with people who don't already know about their methods.
Is emotion fake? These are not things to judge from the exterior, because emotion is connected to the core of who someone is and what they believe. That's like judging a book by it's cover. I once knew a young girl who had exaggerated behavior, and i wondered in my mind if she was just putting on a show. Over time i realized it's not something that she just turns on and turns off, but rather it's just simply the way she is.
This does not just happen in cults, it happens in many religious institutions. It is religious abuse. The greatest sin. To use the name and representation of God to give you a false authority to Lord over others and harm them is not only hypocrisy but a great offense to God who is the power of Love.

L Vega religions aren’t a cult
naomi abu a cult is literally defined as “a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object”.

WorldisArt yup it's truly painful.

Her describing the report card stuff was insane. It was like she was six years old again, was so easily able make the audience feel the shame she felt. Really heartbreaking.
Is she a writer? The technique she uses to hit the audience, talking in very happy sentences and building up positive emotions only to drop a horrible realization on the crowd, is really interesting. Beautiful story and really beautiful execution.

(Being the social people we are, being told that leaving is ostracised and exocommunicating is super tough.)
And don’t let me get started on rationalising. From little things to horrifying, they can often find their ways to excuse their lies or other terrible things they do. Like “the bad is outweighed by the good!” or “remember, if you report to the police/authorities about the actions of the leader, we’ll suffer an eternity of damnation.”
grown adults? try grown cities and countries
I don’t believe that that the Bible is a lie but I do believe that those people are not who they say they are. If they where Christians they would love each other and protect each other.

Agreed. It's probably hard to speak about the good memories when she knows how it ends

She witnessed horrible things but she lived a comfortable life being a granddaughter/daughter of one of the leaders.. Nine sibblings including herself were raised by the family at the expense of others' free labor, those who are at the lower rank.. These still happens now adays.. When members of the cult are required to give 10% of their income to the leaders.. The leaders and their wives are not having a job but living a very comfortable lives.. Living in a comgortable house, kids going to prestigious schools while not having a job.. While thosr who are paying 10 of. Their income to the church/leaders are struggling to send their children to school
@@lady-j5586 you completely missed the point... I’m talking about how she is clearly in pain because of her experiences and some people are unfairly doubting her. Ramses Bartunek i think it's worth being mentioned because most children would probably go along with it and not question their elders. Most children would be too easily brainwashed to understand that something was wrong...
Miss.Phoenixx It reminded me of myself, as a 3 year old everyone I knew was the same religion as me, and I came up with the conclusion that religion is a crutch for people's fear of death. This would be my view today if not for the fact that God basically slapped me with happiness and a knowledge that the things I was hearing were true.
My question is, why didn’t the people that fled the cult report the cult to the police of the outside world?
They didn’t know it was a cult
/Issa and Larray \ maybe but if they fled they certainly fled for a reason, and would’ve known that they were fleeing from illegal stuff, so they should’ve reported it regardless of a cult or not

The amount of people being annoyed of her being emotional or making fun about her story and saying you should send X in that cult truly amazes me.
What an incredible story and what an incredible act of bravery to relive it and share it with others. She has my deepest respect for that.
The fact that you actually care what a bunch of internet trolls say truly amazes me
The trolls are people and being aware of your fellow citizens is just kinda part of being a good citizen. The trolls may sometimes be insincere but I do think a video like this triggers the repressive to have a go. It's important to see how that happens and respond appropriately. So many hearts have been shattered by similar upbringings that the threat of freedom can be anathema.
