I grew up in a small, abusive family cult. I ran away when I was 17. That was 13 years ago, and I haven't spoken to any of my family since. I am in therapy still trying to recover, I changed my name and will never give a TED talk because I don't want to be found. Dawn Smith is bright, brave and brilliant for getting out and building a life where she can talk about this without fear.

Run away from pathological relationship and embrace God, who is the king of freedom and love. God gives you wisdom to find Him alone and be really free... and maybe, some day you can go back and teach your loved ones about the truth. God bless you!

It's her perception Quantum Leap, you can't say it's exaggerated just because you don't agree with it. I get your point, but from her standpoint I totally understand the state of mind, and the use of this pseudo figure-of-speech.
Quantum Leap are you a man, or a woman? Would take a wild guess you're a guy. The fact that you think my opinion is worthless because I didn't belong to a cult says a lot about yourself. The fact that you also put every cult in the same bag is also worrying, and that by knowing one you seem to know them all is also a bit odd, and worrying at the same time. You should be more responsible.
I think it might also be about not the actual day itself being better, but when she was in the cult, she always had this cult over her head, which might leave even the best day in years with a very bitter taste.
Abraham Serafino so are your her brother? Because unless you are, you won’t know what she feels really and even if you are you still probably wouldn’t know because you’re not her. Not only she has the cult life over her childhood and family, but her father started as she stated in the beginning. She probably feels somewhat responsible for other people’s life in it since it’s her family who lured them into it. That’s not exaggerated; you just can’t relate in the same level because, well, you’re not her and we are all different and process and understand differently; you can be sympathetic or empathetic, but you’ll never be literally in her shoes so you’ll never truly grasp her feelings.
As someone who was raised in a cult, I also think this is a powerful and lovely sentiment. The hallmark of a cult is control and force. Everything was tinged by control and was forced, even the joy. Even on "good" days, I lived knowing in the back of my mind that someone else was being abused by the cult system. Allowing yourself to be controlled and forced is easier in many ways. Being free is actually harder, but it's worth it.
As a mental health counselor, I have supported a few people coming out of a cult. Its heart wrenching to see the psychological damage caused by these groups. Thank you for sharing.
I lived for decades with a lid on my painful experiences and felt like I had dealt with them pretty well, then my brother’s suicide in response to completely untreated and painful cancer has opened back up the can of worms. I wish more therapists and professionals had good information about this phenomenon and how vascularized the damage often is.

I feel though, having been in a cult myself, that people very seldom understand and support what I’ve been through. Surely evangelicals I know don’t, but it’s other people too and it’s so tiresome. Like you have to prove to people you’ve been in a sect.
i escaped a christian cult last year. i had no idea it was a cult until i tried to leave. they stalked me. they threatened me. i was told the only way out is death. i feared for my life. i went into hiding across the country pretending to be homeless. i was on the run for 6 months. i am finally writing a book about my experiences and the cult that tried to sacrifice me. leaving a cult is scary. but your bravery will always be rewarded.

I'm a christian and I regularly attend Sunday services and I'm also involved in the music ministry as well. But NONE of what she describes as "not allowed" in their group is even prohibited in our church. We got to live like how normal people do. Its just sad the some people use religion and even the name of Jesus to control people.

Yea, not all churches are the same. Most Christians are just normal people living life. Those strict churches know very well they can’t be perfect but they sure try and fail time after time but it’s always the “do as I say not as I do” rhetoric. 😉

@@sheilacampos5246 no thanks! I used to be Catholic. Weirdest cult I was in. I found a regular Christian church where I accepted Christ and learned the concept of sinful nature. I know I’m not perfect but I am saved and can live a normal life until Christ comes. I don’t go around condemning people or attacking them if they don’t live a certain lifestyle. I do however defend myself if I need to. 🤷🏻♂️
I grew up a nondenominational evangelical Pentecostal pastor’s daughter. I was not allowed to wear pants, wear make up, have piercings, cut my hair, watch television, listen to secular music, date, participate in sports, or make any decisions for my own life without writing to the “witness room” so a room full of strangers could pray over my life and write back what god wanted me to do. I left when I was eighteen. I lost all my friends and a few family members. It’s been 3 years since I have left and it remains a struggle emotionally and psychologically. The worst day of freedom, is better than the best day in a cult”. That statement keeps me going.
I grew up the same way and its been over a year for me, and just been struggling psychologically as well, but it is well worth it.
anne lenora brown If you haven't already, go to counseler who specializes in PTSD and trauma. Not saying everyone experience is the same way but I left when I was 20, at 24 I had a nervous breakdown and almost lost my life. Even still I didn't get into counseling until I was 35. Its the best thing ever, and wish someone told me sooner that even though I was "living", I wasn't living to my potential out of hidden fears. Anytime something bad happened, it was God punishing me, then Id figuratively pummel myself internally for being "bad". Maybe you understand what I mean. Anyways, good luck to you and hope the closeness you shared with those people doesn't lure you back.

I'm so sorry, Anne, that you had such experience. I hope it will not stop you from coming to real Jesus, who is pure Love and highest wisdom - one day, when you will be able to differentiate between Him and maybe somehow twisted represenatation of Him that you got through the church environment you grew up in. I hope I'll never scare off my daughters from following Jesus by unnecessary banning normal things, though I try to show them who is God and how I learn to know Him, and obviously, bring them up with as much wisdom as I can get. Everything has a right time, so you cannot give full freedom to a young child what he or she will wear, where they will go, also start dating in very young age is not the best idea, etc. But these things must be communicated with love and supported by loving enviromnment, not by fear and isolation. And as the children are growing up, they can bear more freedom and use it responsibly. I hope you'll get it together in your life and wish you come to meet the real, living God, who is gentle and never leads you through hard ordering, intimidation, discouragement. Jesus is the best to look for and look at, when we are trying to find real God.

People are fallible. Mistakes will always be made. Never trust implicitly and always ask questions.
I was born and raised in an evangelical church and this is so true it took me years and years of narcissistic abuse to leave and finally live a happy and healthy life

years in evangelical churches, seen in fighting and power struggles, wishing I could leave but there is a purpose in my life by staying! Covid lockdown has kept me away for months and now I feel it could be time for a step away, but we all need to know connection with God dont we.

To me, there is something sinister in the word evangelical. Although a baptized Christian, I was forced to attend evangelical events by my parents. It stopped when I was inducted into the military. I attended a Billy Graham event at the Angels Stadium in Anaheim. That was the very last time!
Many years ago, I was sucked into an evangelical cult for 9 months. I was married with two children. We left the cult but not The Church or God. His mercy endures forever.

Thanks so much for your words. I too escaped an evangelical cult where my father was not only the minister but a seminary professor. I was shunned, told that therapy I entered in to in order to save my life from suicide was a cult. Best decision I ever made, not without a huge cost of family trauma and ostracism. Thanks for speaking for us! I’m now a physician and almost 70 years old and although I didn’t hear these exact words I remember two women in my life as a child (who only connected with me for a few minutes) who changed my life forever by loving me. In that short time I felt changed and knew there was a different world out there, a loving world I share now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Have you ever met a super religious woman with high self esteem? It doesn't happen, god doesn't allow property to have self esteem. The courage to break away is a beautiful thing.

yeah, in my church you learn the husbands name, then you just call their wifes...."wife" and that was it.

Before you reject out of hand what I (and God) have to say to you, we would request that you hear my qualifications first. I have been working directly for God for the past 14 years now. He has performed miracles through me with WITNESSES and many more without witnesses. In January 2008 He gave me a job description that says "I am sending you out by the Power of my Spirit to Release those bound by Fear, to Proclaim Forgiveness, and to Show Love to ALL men". Ironically, I don't have to like you but it is necessary that I love you. By the way, my job description is NOT an order or command from God but rather a request. God will NEVER (contrary to popular opinion) order anyone to do anything. To do so would be like throwing the proverbial monkey wrench into the workings of His Perfect System - and this He will NEVER do. It would make a mockery of Free Will and really mess up His Perfect System.
It is obvious that your perceptions are based on Fear. Spiritual observation says that Love will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do the right thing. Fear, however, confuses and paralysis the mind and is the source of ALL heartache and misery on the planet. Fear is not only part of the problem - IT IS THE PROBLEM. It would benefit you (and the world) greatly if you could be honest (walk in God's Truth) and always question as to how you arrive at YOUR Truths - from a place of Love or from a place of Fear?
Please don't throw bible quotes at everything and everyone. You need to realize that ALL religions, under human custodianship, have warped and even outright lied about their Holy Scriptures in order to put the FEAR of God into their followers in order to control them. They ALL say basically the same thing " Give us your money and then let's go and eliminate those who don't believe as we do". Jesus said " Woe unto ye Pharisees. You are supposed to lead the people to God". They didn't then and they don't now. I know that God has preserved and protected the most important parts of everybody's Scriptures, BUT not everything is accurate. The best (and only) way to KNOW this is to develop a personal intimate relationship with God with no lying middle-men between you and God. Then you can get the Truth right from the horse's mouth. I'm not special because of my relationship with God. It is available to ANYONE. God Desires a personal relationship with EACH AND EVERYONE of His Spirit children - even you. He tells us how. If you seek God you can find Him with ALL of your heart, mind, strength, and soul. It is not necessary to be commanded to do the right thing. If you are seeking God, you will find that it is IMPOSSIBLE to do ANYTHING unGodly.
Religions preach that we should Fear God - and yet are we not supposed to Love Him/Her/It. PROBLEM: You CANNOT Love something that you Fear. Love and Fear CANNOT co-exist. In my daily interactions with God over the past 14 years, He has shown me NOTHING BUT Love and Humor. YOU have Free Will (and hopefully a properly functioning brain). You decide. Do you believe the lying middle-men OR a Teacher/Messanger from God. Let me remind you that my Boss IS a Truth Freak.
What if I told you that God IS communicating with EVERYONE constantly - He's doing so with YOU - RIGHT NOW. But, who listens? Such is the power of Fear. It does seem daunting at first, to imagine an intimate closeness with God Himself - and yet it is God's Desire to be close to you. Can you overcome your Fear just long enough to experience Love itself? God (personally) is reaching out to YOU right through me. I am going to show you where you can communicate directly with God within minutes. I KNOW this to be true as I have had a very very similar experience as the author. I could write my own book.
Even if you don't look God up - Fear not. He Will Love you UNCONDITIONALLY no matter what. But wow. Would you ever be missing out on the greatest experience of your life if you don't.
I was just going to give you the meet God place when for some reason know only to the Holy Spirit I am being asked to tell you about an experience I had about 5 years ago.
I came across some writing that said "ONLY God judges me". I was immediately and powerfully urged by the Spirit to add to this and so I wrote " WRONG. God does not judge, nor, condemn, nor punish. God is ONLY UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. It is man who judges, condemns and punishes. God is not cruel. It is man who is cruel".
What man calls sin God calls mistakes and mistakes are not felt with by punishment but rather are offered the opportunity (as many as needed) for correction. This is part of the function of reincarnation.
We are ALL eventually going to return to Him (Source) - but He will NEVER force you. Wether we know it or not or like it or not, we are ALL in the most capable and Loving 'hands' in existence. Not one soul will be lost. The Perfect System makes sure of that.
OK. Back to meeting God. Check out "Conversations with God" book 1 on RUclips - to start. God will guide you from there. I advise people to give it a try for 15-20 minutes and then you will know what to do. Spoiler alert. Around the 30 min. mark God explains how and why He created us and the Universe. Later He also explains how to tell the difference between messages from God and those from another source. You can know if THIS material is from God or not. Bless you. I will pray for you.

Agreed-excellent point. I was raised in a family run by an abusive and narcissistic woman. I left the cult (family) and have been disowned. It is VERY much like a cult. What a totally accurate way to look at it! Thank you for sharing this.
Kenneth Bachman- politely disagreeing. The biblical framework with focused the framers gave us orderly freedom. Sure, I agree that some (maybe too many... even 1 is too many) narcissist’s and covert narcissist’s make insidious cultishness out of others true faith. That’s not limited to evangelicalism. Most evangelicals stand for the morals of their faith as honestly (and not always as lovingly as we should) as you or anyone else does. The toot lacks the cult, but we get some bad apples and those bad apples ruin whole barrels of otherwise loving neighbors.
Jesus was a cultist, so what do you expect from christianity?

I'd like to use the term de-cultised and yes it's a made up word. I've noticed that often their faith is still there and often it's stronger for having experienced what they've gone through. Which by the way they should never have experienced in the first place.

Hi Dawn, I was in the assembly too. I met your dad, uncle and grandparents on a number of occasions. When the wheels fell off the wagon, there were still some outlier assemblies that tried to keep it going and even continued to invite and host your grandfather to preach in the gathering. I finally left after the remaining leading brother in the local assembly decided that he had no peers among the brothers and anointed himself the "Final Decision Maker". I took my family and ran as far away as possible and now we're in a very happy and thriving mainstream church. It's always sad to see men taking the Word of God and twisting it to fit their agenda. I wish you the best and may God bless and keep you in his tender care.

I hear you....but I also regret how those who criticize the C of S (justly) often will not admit that this "tradition" did provide some valuable tools. I left the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses at the age of 18. I am 37 now. It would of been so comforting to me to have some say that to me as youngster. I really applaud you for it. Not going to lie, hearing that made me tear up.
What made u leave at 18 and how?
I also grew up JW. I perceived when I was very young like eight or nine that it didn't make sense. What didn't make sense to me was that God would destroy babies whose parents were not believers you know at Armageddon. That was the seed that started me on the way out. I wasn't sure that it was exactly a cult, although we weren't allowed to celebrate Christmas or birthdays things like that and women were very subjected to men. But looking back it kind of was because what really got me when I left at around 18. Was that the people out there in the world that were so vilified by JW's as being? You know goats, as in the sheep and the goats, that they were just people and for the first time I could see them as just people and I could have friends and talk to them and all of that kind of stuff. When I left I just it was after we moved away from Utah, so I wasn't exactly kicked out or disfellowshipped or anything. I just faded away. It was the best thing that ever happened but it did affect my life long-term because I had the mental attitude that I was worth nothing, that higher education was not something I should do so I regretted not ever going to college but I've had a good life. I'm really glad I left.

I grew up in the Assembly (Fullerton) as well from about age 2 to 16. I knew Dawn and always really liked her and her sister. Both were younger than me. I’m so happy to see the healing in Dawn’s life. Many people needed healing at various levels because of the Assembly. I think us kids might have had it the worst because it robbed our childhood. They didn’t want the kids to attend any dances at school or do even normal things . When I was 16, one of the elders, Mark, talked to my mom about me wearing make up (lipstick and little mascara). Oh and God forbid I had a perm. Lol. Like Dawn said that was really looked down upon. I remember growing up feeling guilty about everything.
My family was kind of ostracized by the elders especially toward the end. My younger sister and I didn’t go their school. We were in a (secular ) public school, which was bad. Also my my dad didn’t attend-that was also bad. My aunt was in one of those training homes. She experienced, what I consider now, emotional abuse because of all the “correction” and training to be more godly. Toward the end, when I was about 16, the shunning toward my mom and grandmother really got strong. They were told years later that the other members were told to shun them. As toxic and controlling as the leadership was I also remember there were a lot of loving people in the general public of the Assembly who just loved the Lord and meant well . I really loved the people that volunteered as youth ministers from childhood through high school. I really liked all the kids I grew up with. I got to babysit for a couple of amazing families with great kids. Hearing other people’s stories from the assembly has brought a lot of comfort. I know God can restore.
I believe elder Mark was our neighbor in Fullerton and he and his wife D.. have since left the cult .. the house had various church members and they’d have “ consequences “ for their action as adults like yard work weed pulling .. they were all sweet and we shared a few meals and lovely conversations.. we are Christians not in a cult and soon realized it was a bit weird .. glad they disbanded.. loved them all as neighbors and friends .. they followed the wrong way to Jesus. Law without Love is Legalism ..
Surely those loving and well intentioned souls deserved better than a controlling and toxic CULT instead of a genuine open expression of faith.

hello friend, ex-jehovah’s witness here. i was also in a cult. my mother had a really close mormon friend when i was 11 and 12, and i definitely saw similarities between them. it was the only person i ever knew at that time who was as certain in an absolute truth as my mother was, and their friendship was really based in trying to indoctrinate one another. and for some reason, mormonism was the only other religion i knew anything about as well (information control limited us from learning about false religion through worldly sources). ah, childhood memories

An excellent video. I was raised as a JW in the 1950s & 60s. I am 70+ now. All that bible studying 3x a week + knocking on doors with my mum was getting to me . As an early teen I started to take an interest in girls and there was nothing more galling than going to the swimming pool on a Sunday morning with friends, then having to go home early to go to the Kingdom Hall, knowing my friends were moving in on my "conquest". I had to live away as a trainee apprentice and that was when my mind started to clear even more. I was introduced to beer and that was the final nail in my coffin as far as the Elders were concerned. I just told my mum I wasn't interested anymore and walked away. It was easy in those days. They used to say they were not a cult but they fitted all the parameters she gives in this video. She stayed in but never tried to preach at me. The feeling of freedom and elation was terrific.
I recently found out my chiropodist was a JW and she asked why I had left. I just said "I discovered beer and women!" A little while later, I met her husband (also JW) who said "I hear you left for beer and women. What else did you discover?" I said that having cracked it with the beer and women so early in life, I felt there was nothing more to worry about. He gave me that all knowing "You lucky b****r!" look!

I heard the most perceptive observation yesterday during a visit with my 90-year old aunt. During our discussion on very things, somehow the subject of atheism came up. Despite being a cradle Catholic, she said, "At least atheists never try to convert you." BRILLIANT!!!! I am open minded, more of an agnostic, but that statement was profoundly interesting to me.
Atheists work very hard to convince religious people to convert to Atheism. That is fact.
I wish that was the case. Evangelical atheists are just as nauseating as fundamentalist religious groups. They are just as prone to forcing their atheism upon everyone and specifically go after anyone who dares to follow any form of religion or acknowledge the presence of a deity to gain the favor of their supreme leaders: Dawkins and Hitchens. What ever happened to believing whatever you choose as long as a you are a productive member of society and your beliefs don't spread hate or cause harm?
@@phobetos4976 I agree. I am. not religious but I don't "label" myself as "atheist" either. I'm not fond of labels. I think it comes down to the fact that extremism in any direction tends to corrupt. I don't care for Hitchens or Dawkins, although now and then Hitchens says something historically interesting. I guess my take on spirituality is that it is personal and you do not need to be part of a group to be a spiritual person. Also, if people are so intensely dedicated to their belief system that they feel they have to "convert" others in order to validate themselves and their beliefs, that indicates that, in fact, they doubt it themselves.

After 19 years of marriage to an abusive narcissistic man, I took the kids and left. It was hard. I never ever regretted leaving that daily fear and though I was dragged through the courts as he is a lawyer, the kids were so very, very grateful and relieved that I was the primary custodial parent. One day, years later, while in conversation with him about one of the kids, he switched the conversation and began talking about me, his finger pointing again, his words accusatory, angry, bizarre lies. A tiny voice in my head, my own, spoke to me, "There HE is. You don't have to stay to listen to this." For the second time in nearly thirty years of knowing this man, my inner voice asserted itself on my behalf. I calmly stood up, alimony and child support check in hand, "I hope you have a good day." I said, only a step from the closed door. As I looked at him as I closed the door after me, I saw the stunned realization on his face that he had let me see the real him as I'd seen daily throughout our 19 years and that he saw I finally realized I didn't have to be his victim any more.

Thank You for making the connection between the Cult talk - and family or personal abuse. Abusers look for victims in people they can control. Maybe cults are started by those who seek total control .PTSD can be from families as well as partners or cults.Those who seek to dominate are not friends.
I stayed in a similar marriage for 17 years, bc I didn’t know I could leave. The kids and I have been out for 6 years now, and although he’s made a relationship with the youngest son, the older child and I still receive his abuse via passive aggressive texts. He finally lost his sh*t via text a week ago, and I told him to never speak to me ever again and I blocked him. I’m about to go to court for full custody.

Oh - I have had my favourite JW. They make some dull days so very interesting, if one has nothing else to do. If the smalltalk is not being launched successfully, I throw in the word "evolution" a few times, and things get going! However, sadly, I have the impression that my favourite JW avoid me recently.

Many years ago I felt the need to re-examine my belief as a Bahá'í and so I announced to everyone that I was renouncing my membership in the community. There were no reproaches; instead everyone wanted assurances that I'd keep up my friendly association with them. I continued attending Bahá'í events on occasion, until I eventually rediscovered my faith and rejoined without fanfare. I was never asked for explanations. During these many years since, I've regarded doubts as a God-given stimulus to reflect, investigate, and learn, and as a result my belief has grown ever stronger and richer.
I left a "religion" about God, but didn't abandon my "relationship" with God.
That's the Spirit ;-)

I too was in this Assembly for 11 years and left when my first child was 1 year old. I saw real problems and knew Dawn's abusive uncle David well and was close to her abused aunt and cousins. The one good thing that the group did that probably helped in it's demise is that it really stressed the personal study of the bible. I left because I saw big problems and men I respected were leaving. I realized later that the group had hindered my ability to serve Christ rather than help. The assembly collapsed under its own weight , George Geftakys crushed it under a load of foolishness. Since leaving I have done mission work in a Romanian orphanage (110 days in country over 10 visits) and now minister to 10 to 20 prisoners 5 days a month at the supermax Potosi CC in Missouri that houses 70 percent on its inmates who are murderers with life w/o parole or death penalty sentences. My father is the pastor of a church that up until 2 years ago had baptist in it's title, but it is recently changed The name to something non denominational. There are about 5,000 people attending every week. It's hard to imagine that someone with such Alienating, dogmatic beliefs has so many people who come to listen to the word of god at his feet but it is true. When I left, I moved all the way from the east coast to a midwestern fly over state and never looked back.Even though I was far away, I was still disowned for 2 years upon leaving. Thank

This is amazing. Thank you Dawn! I was raised as a Southern Baptist. That's not a cult...right? I had some doubts about "god's will" when I was drafted and ended up in combat in Vietnam (1968) where the danger forced me into religious ways of thinking and acting. Then I met an "atheist in a foxhole." We didn't literally have foxholes in the Mekong Delta because any hole we dug was soon filled with water. I watched Sgt Cowles closely. He took care of his squad, challenged leaders when their strategy seemed unwise and was fearless in firefights. I was confused because I had always been told that there were no atheists in foxholes. I came home and tried to forget about Cowles. I started college and joined one of, if not THE, first christian rock bands. Please forgive me, I knew not what I was doing. My family was immersed in church when I came home from Vietnam. Dad was a bit off-and-on, but Mom made sure we went to church or felt guilty about not going. She was the church secretary and (during college) I married our pastor's daughter. I thought my life was going to be amazing, and it was...amazingly full of a life that was not mine in any way, shape or form. My sister hid her pregnancy (1979) and gave up her beautiful baby daughter so that Mom wouldn't lose her job (while Dad was chasing get-rich-quick schemes) and we would not be shunned by our dear friends in the congregation. The good news is that I left that hellish marriage and my sister's baby daughter found her last year (2020)! I have not missed anything about church or religion in over 40 years. You can leave, you can find out (or just decide) who you truly are and there is a better life out in the world. I no longer care about admonitions in the Goat Herder's Guide to the Universe (bible). I trust the scientific method when money doesn't buy results (tobacco, herbicides, oil and gas companies, etc.). I received counseling and meds from the VA for my PTSD in 2006, so that I could be a better person for my 4th wife. PTSD took a toll on personal relationships, jobs and much more. Annie died in 2020 and I will never see her again, but I have some precious memories and her grown children help me deal with not seeing my son and daughter (from the first marriage) since 1988. Please question your basic assumptions and look outside your comfort zone for truth which makes sense to you. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your story, I have so much compassion and empathy for what you have walked through and am so upset that families, cover up abuse, not just in cults but also in society, even today they are not willing to admit the truth of what I told them, i really don't understand how people can turn blind eye to abuse. It breaks my heart.

Your discussion about experiences and explanations living in a cult was what I experience as a Jehovah's Witnesses. The aftermath of leaving and being disfellowshipped was the most heartbreaking and loneliest time in my life at 21 having no clue how to survive with worldly people. To this day, 30 years later, I have become aware that I still follow their unwritten and unspoken rules. I am working toward being free of all their rules. So difficult while so worth it! Thank you!

There are ~33,000 different Christian denominations today in the world. That is very telling. Though it can be manipulated most just don't get it. The bible is purposefully vague and people make it what they think it should be while using their ego's and/or fears as the guide. They don't listen to a god. (Did any god give 33,000 interpretations?) But they sure are eager to tell people what god says.

Every word is God breathed and useful for correction, reproof, doctrine and so on.. Read the Bible for yourself and you will learn the truth. God’s word is indeed flawless, sharper than any two edged sword. God is holy perfect and just, and can’t tolerate sin. I agree it, it is very sad. Someone is behind this and trying to turn as many people away from the truth as much as possible...and yep it is none other than the adversary himself. Religion is man made (such as Mormonism,Catholicism etc.) and it is sickening how they take parts of the Bible to twist with their man made stories and laws. Christianity is a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father and reading His written Word will set you free because it is the Truth.

I officially left Protestant Evangelicalism (though not generally recognized as a "cult") in September 2016 and it was the best decision I ever made. I am now happily part of the Eastern Orthodox church which has truly humbled me. So thankful for the grace of God in my life. I certainly don't deserve it.

I put this woman's story in the latter category. Even the term "The assembly" sounds all ominous and culty like, but at the end of the day only the name rings strange.
It's obvious this was a strict religious group and she despised it for taking away the many perks of just being a kid. And I get that. But at the end of the day it's really her parents rules that she's mad at. The "assembly" merely acted in the background to facilitate the parents' views.

A lot of people are commenting along the lines of "That's too bad that she had that experience, because that doesn't reflect _my_ Christianity. _MY_ Christianity is not a cult." That may be true, but:
1) Please take a good, long, reflective look at your Christianity, just in case. If your first reaction upon hearing a story like this is to make a distinction between that situation and your own religion - when, in fact, she was not making general statements about Christianity at all - that might be a sign of something bad. Just be careful.
2) Be careful not to act like she _needs_ your Christianity in order to "save" herself from this bad cult experience. I feel like that is slightly cult-like in and of itself. In actuality, she needed to exercise her own free and independent thought. If she also wants religion to be a part of her life, that is up to her to figure out.

Look into your divine heart for answers about your purpose, and use the logical divine brain that was evolved into your human body to understand life. Never never ever look at a "sacred" religious text again for answers to anything when the answers have always been right there in you the whole time.

Thank you for your bravery. I was going thru a bad time in my marriage started to go to a non denomination church run by a women. She was in control of every aspect of the ministry. I became so involved that I started to loss my family. I became the armorbearer of the pastor and was always at church. My marriage fall apart. My youngest daughter was getting lost in the world. The pastor never helped her spiritual and was cruel to her. I was there 8 yrs when my eyes opened up to see the damage in my family. I got up during a service pastor was late like always so i called her and told her if this is serving God i quit walked out and never went back. It took months before i could even go to the store for fear of seeing pastor or members of that church. It was a cult i realized because so many marriages were falling apart because of the pastor wanting control over the womens lifes. 2 yrs later i started working at a wonderful church my family and I got pastorial help for what We went thru. Our relation with God was restored. I worked there 10 yrs my children learned to love and trust God. I thank God for taking me and my family to the right place for restoration.
So grateful for this remarkable woman and her strength and honesty… it takes guts to get away and repair and share and with such humour too. 💝

I just want to say what a beautiful talk. You in some sort of way described my many of us journey from darkness to light. From cultish religion to secularism.
I can only speak for myself. I grew up in a similar tradition. There were certainly parts of it I came to see as ridiculous, some just silly, some harmful. Somehow I never blamed the Gospel, or the entire tradition, just the individuals who were mostly misguided. I’m of course not talking about anyone who was abusive. I’ve found the Gospel is always what it is, not what we say it is. There are horrible parents who do not have any religion. I hope that their children realize they can leave their situation as well.

I, an atheist, went to a youth group for 6th through 12th graders the other day. My atheist friend is being forced to go by her mom and was getting bored of it. A youth group is nothing like a cult, it's supposed to be a positive environment. Yet that day was "real talk," where they had had kids submit anonymous questions to get religious advice on how to deal with their problems. Some of the questions included "why does my father do what he does to me," "why do I have suicidal thoughts and depression, why does god allow it," "how do I stop wanting to harm myself," etc. You know what the youth pastor said in response to all of them? "All issues in life are caused by sin. You must stop sinning, and only then will your life get better." In response to the dad question, the person was told to forgive their father because he is probably going through a tough time. This is what sickens me about some parts of religion. I wholly understand that not all religious people and churches are like this, and if believing in god makes you happy then by all means believe in him. But this is the part that's so totally screwed up and ruins the name of Christianity. Those kids wanted help, but now they probably think it's their faults and are more likely to kill themselves. There were _6th graders_ there. That's not healthy for anyone to hear, especially not middle schoolers and I'm so damn angry over it. Especially since when I was in middle school I had problems similar to those asked so I empathize with them. I can only imagine how bad cults are. It also sickens me how fundamentalists will use the bible to excuse any acts of hatred such as being against the LGBT community and people of color. These are the reasons why I'm not religious. I am so sorry to anyone who's forced by their family to be religious and/or is not allowed to be their selves and emotionally or physically abused. I really hope life gets better for you.

There is nowhere in the Bible that tells children to keep getting abused. I do not understand how this youth pastor did not report the crime and save this kid 😞. Too many people are getting put in leadership positions that have no business being there.
I, too, hate a religion like this. But I love Jesus who saved my life, He is love incarnate, so anyone that represents Him without love has no clue who He is. I pray that all people could experience the true Jesus.

That's absolutely terrible. In training I've done to lead at youth camps, we've had policies in place to deal with abuse being reported, to get the kid help. That is what should have been done. How terrible.
It has been 5 years since I left my parents ‘church’ there are so many things hidden using A God to control & destroy. Most difficult thing I’ve ever left after 18/19yrs. I resonate so much to this. It is sad to know how many people go through this bs.

I spent most of my childhood in a cult that refused to be labeled a cult and your statements about cults not wanting to be labeled made so much sense to me
ALL religions are cults but no one wants to admit that they are in a cult. More than that, they don't even recognize it as such.

I very recently realized I grew up in an extreme Christian cult as well. This woman’s experience is so familiar to me it’s uncanny. Thankfully my family and I were able to get out even though it tore my parents marriage apart and left us in extreme debt. I’m working on healing and processing everything that happened and I feel so thankful to have a healthy relationship with Christ now that isn’t centered around unquestioning obedience, submission and fear of the end of the world. It is possible to escape a situation like this and find a truly healthy relationship with Jesus!

How are they gonna change if everyone that could have confronted them chooses instead to... leave? How d'you know that God doesn't have you there so that you can be that 1 person? The religious leaders of the day hated Jesus and eventually had him killed because he dared show them that their lives weren't pleasing to God, had simply been the traditions men had set up and didn't even have the power to allow them to have a relationship w/God and was blocking others from doing the same.

I think it's so important that you mention the time with your family building the Assembly are some of your favourite childhood memories. It will definitely help others feel less ashamed about enjoying this time, but still learning to ask questions and look beyond. I grew up in the same situation and now use the experience with my clients as a therapist specializing in RTS! 🙂
