In a time when beauty is defined by supermodels, success is defined by wealth, and fame is deified by how many followers you have on social media, Lizzie Velasquez asks the question how do you define yourself? Once labeled, "The Worlds Ugliest Woman," Lizzie decided to turn things around and create her own definitions of what she defines as beauty and happiness.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

She can't exploit her beauty for selfish personal-gains. She had to beautify the only thing she had control of: her soul, and damn she did a good job. She's a truly beautiful woman!

She touched my heart. I grew up with cruelty because the right side of my face is paralyzed. As I aged I became quite beautiful to most, but still some made fun of me even as I grew older. Cruelty is not just happening to kids. I was working for a law firm. I had several surgeries that helped. Unfortunately, getting old (65) is a challenge and not so pretty, but the guys aren’t looking at me these days, they’re looking at my daughters who are beautiful and always have been. My last name is Velasquez, as you can see. If I hadn't searched "Velasquez" out of curiosity on RUclips 7 years ago, if I hadn't clicked on this video, I wouldn't be here. All my life, I've felt like I didn't belong in my own skin, I've cried to my mom asking why I was born since I was 6 because people couldn't and can't stop asking why I was "always sick or half-dead". I'm just a girl, but because of my dark circles, my bone structure and my skin, I have been called names by everyone including close friends, family, everyone. I have tried so much to improve my outer appearance that I started purposefully tangling my hair and not sleeping when I was 10. I would've harmed myself, I would've destroyed myself from the inside if it wasn't for that video. Lizzie's words, work and heart touched me in a place so deep that everytime I rewatch that video I cry, not because I'm sad, but because I'm so, so grateful to share a name with her, because I share feelings with her and, somewhat, I share stories with her. We might not be what society expects of us, I might be "that one girl" for the people passing me in the street. But we have strength. She is one of the strongest people I've seen, a warrior, one of the strongest people I wish I could meet, and the strongest person to grant me strength to push through my own hardship. Thank you Lizzie, I wish you as much happiness as you've given me, even if you don't know

During the first year,I had faith in God that i would be healed someday. This disease started circulating all over my body and i have been taking treatment from my doctor, few weeks ago i came on search on the internet if i could get any information concerning the prevention of this disease, on my search i saw a testimony of someone who has been healed from (HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS) by this Man Dr balwa and she also gave the email address: drbalwa90herbalcare@gmail.com of this man and advise we should contact him for any sickness that he would be of help, so i wrote to Dr. Balwa telling him about my (HERPES Virus) he told me not to worry that i was going to be cured!! hmm i never believed it,, well after all the procedures and remedy given to me by this man few weeks later i started experiencing changes all over me as the doctor assured me that i have cured, after some time i went to my doctor to confirmed if i have be finally healed behold it was TRUE, So friends my advise is if you have such sickness or any other at all you can email:: drbalwa90herbalcare@mail.com or whatsApp his number on .+2349052779642

Like srsly. Parents play a big role in mental health of a person. If my parents didn't focus too much on my appearance, I might've had a but more confidence in myself. Cuz these days, whenever I'm talking to someone, I think "is my double chin showing up?" Or "am I looking weird?". And this all started ever since my mother and siblings started calling me names whenever they were angry. They might've vented off their anger for the time but they made me feel miserable and I can't forget little thing like that. I wish I was mentally strong like this girl (I admire her so much). Tho I'm trying to change but it's really hard...

Ryan Negrete That really wasn't funny. Btw, nice profile pic. Air Force, huh? My grandfathers are shaking their heads right now at this. I think they would say, "She is strong in ways that matter most.
      Fly high, or stay grounded."

I was listening to the video, not watching it. It was an autoplay while I was doing my chores...first, her voice, then her sense of humour, then her message went straight to my heart...then I reached out to pick up my phone and saw...a lioness in a kitten, a ray of light in a broken lamp, a promise of heaven in the darkness...Thank you, Lizzie! God bless you!

I love this comment so much! You should have WAY more likes. I'm hoping the childish & superficial comments are from pre-teen/teens who have no idea what it means to be a kind person.

Mary Kelly I really hope that they are four-year-olds who don’t know what they’re talking about. I’m a teenager and I would be disgusted if any of my friends said a word against this amazing woman.

Same here. I'm only 15 and even I understand what an amazing person Lizzie is. If any of my friends or peers said anything negative about her purely because of her appearance, I would ditch them. Judge a person on their actions, not their appearance. Most teenagers know this.
