My son's name is Chris. This was one of his favorite movies. It inspired my son to go out in the wilderness as often as he could with his dog Princess. Because he had a family these were just day or weekend trips but they gave him peace and a different outlook on life. My son passed away 2 1/2 yrs ago doing what he loved. Exploring new places, he suffered a major heart attack at age 45. Carine, if you read this please know that I'm very sorry for the loss of your brother. I hope this hike brought you some peace. My family and I recently made our trek and it brought me some sense of closure, whatever that means.
In my opinion Carine is as much of an inspiration as her brother. It is obvious that she is a very strong woman and it was great to hear her talking about the trail. It is obvious that she really cares about people and wants to make sure that everyone stays safe. It's so awesome of her to hike out there and to share her experience on camera. I'm sure it is very hard on her emotionally to go to the bus.

Christopher is lucky to have a sister like you. Keep his journey alive. I travel around in late 80s and 90s never crossed ways with Christopher. But we were all on our own adventures.

Seeing the trail makes me think of, the early Pioneers of America and the 'unknown' West. The trail Carine and fellow hikers were on was very desolate and no so easy. So I can only imagine what people went through toughing it through the wild west in the 1800's. Respect to every one of them. Sad for Chris RIP.
Carine, so strong to do this. I loved your brothers enthusiasm for adventure. I did the same in the 1980's. The quest to be independent drove me. I have so much in common with Chris. @Max Gurth Have They solved the problem - by Now ! Is it World Travellers with No brain ? At Himalayas the trash is a real problem - That Nobody has thought of ? I You have money to travel - Please Dont LITTER !
The trash stored behind that bus is exactly an indicator of the types of people this story attracts and why the locals do not like the people who come to see this bus. For some reason, a bunch of rookies want to go exactly where chris did and recreate the journey, and they leave their trash because they do not care or have any actual respect for nature let alone for the person or his place of death. Thank you for posting. I read the book and watched the movie. Carine McCandless, thank you for keeping Chris is story/experience alive. I was deeply touched by his experiences. I was in a journey of my own when Chris was out there in the wild. I had no idea who he was then. Not until 2012.
Thanks for sharing the video. I have my all respect for th family, the crew who made de movie, and for Chris. I saw the movie many times and always make me think about life, and be a better person. Carine is an amazing and brave sister. Wish one day could to the trail. Thanks for the video again. Rio, Brazil.
You can really tell Carine wants people to not only be inspired by her brother, but learn from, which I think Chris would want too. I like how she stressed several times that the trip was only possible because conditions aligned the right way, and even then it’s still a gnarly hike. Chris himself eventually came to the conclusion himself he shouldn’t be out there, I think he would want people to learn from his story that survival and backpacking are two very different things.
I will never get to go out there, but if could afford it I would most definitely go. I found out about this just the other day on RUclips, I never seen the movie. So with that said it made me cry, and feel sorry for Chris. But then after thinking about it, I think God had a different Journey for Chris in heaven, And I hope I will be able to see him when I get there.. I would like this comment to get to his sister Carine. Because if I was younger I would do this trip by all means. I'm 62 and have bad knees and a bad back. And if I could make it to Alaska, It would be just to see the bus, and then ball my eyes out. I have been watching and looking up stuff on RUclips for the last 5 days and still watching all the RUclips videos. So please thank Carine to let this story go public. That is what inspired me to want to go out there but I can't. Thanks guys for sharing this and God be with you all. God bless.
The book by jon krakauer into the wild great read and moive is good. I hate that people leave trash! We have a saying in Wyoming if you pack it in you pack in it out
Why not everyone takes one or two pieces of trash and get it outta there. respect the place where someone died.this is not Mount Everest it can be done!
Like the video to share and spread awareness, this should be preserved best we can not abuse it because you can. Chris and his story are an amazing thing, please do not let it fade away!!! Supertramp for life! RIP Chris McCandless
Love this video thanks for sharing it, not to sure how I feel about the bus being removed but if people are making the place a mess it's not fair on the wildlife and the locals rip supertramp your story will always be with me 🙏
Well we know now that Carine is smart as a whip too. Very nice words you had to say there. Although, I'd LOVE to hear/see your thoughts on the whole situation.
Carine, sorry for the loss of your brother. I hope this trip helps you understand your brothers journey. Modern humans are spoiled and have no idea what it is like to have to hunt and gather food for survival. These comments are left by folks that can jump in their cars and run through a drive thru of their choice at any time of the day or night. Your brother knew what true freedom felt like. He wasn't a slave to the dollar bill. He was a real man.
Thank you for the Video Guys! I enjoyed it. I've seen the film like 10 times now. Its so Inspiring how Chris connects with People wherever he Goes. I will order the book when i get my next pay check. I live Half-way Across the World, I'm beginning to think its Impossible for me to visit the magic Bus. Anyways, I have had a bit of experience from viewing this video, thank you a lot.
amazing video...thank you for sharing. 7:24 what carine said perfectly embodies what captivated me so much about chris's story...reconnecting with something i lost in myself. i'm really looking forward to her book...
If you take something into the wilderness garbage money tents diomonds shoes socks etc etc...... You take it back out with you that's what my grandaddy always said to me growing up!!
It became almost a shrine to Chris and it's a very sad story and brilliant film. Six years later 'The Bus' flys out under a US Army Chinook. Am betting nobody ever thought that would happen. Very sad to see it go but rescues and fatalities have become to much. Difficult situation just like life........
Luvie1980 the shots are made by the locals to make it less hospitable for the green pilgrims who usually cause problems as chris did he was breaking into cabins and vandalizing them there are videos made by the victims
I am not sure moving the bus will stop some people from still trying to make the trek out there but certainly cut down the numbers. Hopefully this will reduce the number of rescues that are needed and my sincere hope no one else will lose their life trying to cross the river.
The bus was manufactured by 'International Harvesters' presumably at their old factory in Eccleshill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. From my village to the wilds of Alaska, I love that thought.
Just truly inspiring. Both Chris and Carine. And the crew of course. Just finished her book. As most people feel, I have a very strong connection for reasons I don't know. I've camped for years, hiked a bunch of times, but I work in my office every day. Yet I keep combing areas for information, maybe even answers, that I don't know the questions. I'm sure this sounds strange but that's just how I feel about this. I felt the deep connection before I had seen any of Carines information but after her input it just seems that much more. I'm about their age yet their strength seems insurmountable. As if my life is just starting and hers has run about 100 laps. I don't know. I can't figure it out why I have this feeling.
Great video, that was awesome to see what the hike is really like. I definitely want to do it sometime. I'm in Healy right now actually but not planning to hike out there. Working in Denali until the end of September. Thanks for making this video.
I saw your video where you visited the 49th State Brewery and the "Into the Wild" bus. I have friends in Alaska right now and they just visited there as well because their friend owns the place.. it's all an interesting bit of synchronicity, to me at least lol..
@8:52 I had to pause the video. They all stood for the photo........ and they left the empty chair...... for where Chris was sitting in his self portrait. I just lost it for about ten minutes. 😢😭 Something about that just broke me.
This was Carine’s second trip. Great video. How long did it take to go from the parked running bus to the non running bus 142? Have you ever ventured further from the bus to see exactly how far away the ranger’s cabin was from the bus? I’ve heard 6 miles. And the town of Healy I’ve heard is like 20 miles from bus 142. It still mystifies me with the ranger’s cabin so close and being summer, why the ranger never stopped by the bus in 1992 to check for stranded or injured hikers? I understand Chris didn’t want any maps, but he knew enough to find the Stampede Trail but didn’t know the town of Healy was at end of trail. Too bad the guy who dropped him off at the trail didn’t mention the ranger’s cabin or town of Healy to someone he felt was hiking without proper gear and had no maps.
If it is that remote, how did that bus ended up there in the first place? Shouldn’t there be a road nearby? (Btw, I’m from Belgium, and even here the bus was on our national news report on television 😉)
@@kristofsportingdogs3549 The 1940s-era bus, sometimes called “Bus 142” or “The Magic Bus,” was used to house employees by the Yutan Construction Co. when it built an access road about 25 miles west of the Parks Highway, the main thoroughfare between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The bus was abandoned in 1961 and had become an emergency shelter for those using the backcountry to recreate or hunt.
ME..... I CRIED SO HARD AND WAS SO DEEPLY AFFECTED AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE AND IT HAS STAYED WITH ME ALL OF THESE YEARS. GOD BLESS THIS FAMILY & I HOPE CHRIS IS STILL HIKING UP THERE IN HEAVEN SEEING THE BEAUTIFUL VIEWS.
Really enjoyed the video. Would love to go there. Building the bridge sounds like a cool tribute-also preventing more deaths. Only thing that might put me off -Bears! One last question. Could'nt the trash have been burned?
Some of it was. A lot of it was metal cans and such though. ABC/PBS hauled out a lot when they went in to film for the 20/20 episode and the PBS special.
The bus has been removed now. Too many unprepared people getting in trouble trying to hike to the bus. It is now at the U of Fairbanks Museum of the North where it will eventually be on display.
It's in a Alaskan museum, some people feel the bus is haunted even because some people feel there's his spirit in and around the bus and some of those that say haunted used to stay the night when it was in the wild.
It seems like Chris wanted to clear his head and took off on an adventure. I see his point of view about living and knowing material things can cause serious problems within a family. It does not necessarily bring happiness. I so wish he had of survived because I know he would of made a difference in the world! RIP Chris. I have a son (25) yrs old who is now a Marine vet. Chris reminds me of him. My Son has a support dog that he rescued from a shelter. Chris donating his money was very kind of him
I loved your comment. I believe that Chris' life, although cut devastatingly short, was lived in such a remarkable way, that it amassed a story so legendary that it has actually been life-changing for countless of people who have become fascinated with Chris' crowning life-work. He had a dauntless amount of courage to voyage through all of the tremendous adventures that ended up becoming his ultimate purpose in life. He left behind a dearly beloved legacy that will live on in his honor for the rest of eternity. By the way - Just wanted to give an extra BIG SEMPER FI to you and to your son!! As the daughter of a Marine Vet myself - I'm sure you must have been one HELL of an outstanding mother to have raised a United States Marine!!
Very nice video, this story really affects me. He was just too young to die. Thank you for the video and showing inside the prop bus and reading the picture stories.
The last conversation I had with my grandfather was about quitting my job and chasing life. Living in a way that I choose and not being stuck in a lifestyle all about chasing money. I have tried. I wish I had the balls to leave it all. But there has to be a happy medium. I don't have to go to a bus. But I feel more alive alone in the wild than I do alone in the city. And I wish I had someone to experience this with me. But in the end, even surrounded with loved ones, we are all truly alone in our minds in the end. I love my family and friends. And I think most free people are stuck in a falsehood never truly experiencing what life has to offer.
Hello! and Great video! Would you happen to know the exact coordinates of where Chris left Jim Gallien's truck and began his journey? Also, would you happen to know the exact coordinates where Chris turned around after he was unable to cross the river?
thats why it was left there in the first place for people who needed shelter . Not only should it remain the way it was but it should not become a no trespassing tourist attraction either . that bus was never ment to become a tourist attraction it was ment to help people in need in case they got lost or something of the kind . If that bus wouldn't have been there for that exact reason Chris McCanless would have never been found by the hunters . That bus was ment for hickers and thats how it should remain si that the next Chris McCandless can take shelter in it . Cause there will be a next one be sure of it . That kid wasn't unique to have that mentality and lots of kids today have the same and many have done the same already its only a question of time before another gets trapped in that area again since many have already since Chris . remember that he wasn't the only one who was reported lost in the area that same time and the person was never found again . Chris was lucky to have found the bus so people could find his body . The other who got lost at the same time didn't get that same luck
@Brett Yarborough The bus was used for road maintenance crews on a local - the same road used to access the bus which is now not much of a road. The engines were removed at the same time the contractor installed the beds and wood fired stoves. This one had an axle break so they cut it loose from the Cat tractor pulling it where it sits to this day. It was used for a long time prior to Mr. McCandless as a back country shelter for hunters in the area - so yes, it's for shelter for anyone who comes across it, and though I agree silly people should be taking their trash out using the "leave no trace" attitude - it still should be open for people to visit. The majority of visitors do so because they feel a connection to the story - a positive connection. Just because a few are disrespectful, I don't believe that warrants ruining things for the majority.
nature is beautiful and peaceful. People go out into the forest not knowing its a challenge to survive... Chris struggled to survive . so sorry for your loss...wish he could of been saved by someone...
This video and Carine were very moving. I read Into the Wild when it first came out. In my opinion, while it was well written, Carine's book is much better. If you want to know the inside story of Chris and his family, read her book. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet and get to know Chris. His background was not all that different from mine. Had I known him at the time he was traveling across the country, I may well have gone to Alaska with him. Fly among the stars, Chris, and thank you, Carine, for this video and your book. Kathy Gregg
Veranika Nikanava drowned crossing the Teklanika River on July 25, 2019. She and her husband of one month spent two nights on The Bus. On the return hike, the river had risen. Her husband made it across. Thinking it safe after he made it across she then made her attempt. She slipped, he tried to help but his legs were weak from his prior attempt, she was dragged under. He survived. She was 24 years old. RIP.
Wow, I'm so inspired by a man who was told he needed more equipment. but he thought he had a superior connection to nature than anyone else, so he didn't need equipment.
I saw movie and your video, very interesting to me and probably for many hikers and Nature lovers.Thx for sharing...! I have just simple question: Why state/government didn't made some cable bridge over this river... probably cost couple thousand simple construction of it..! It's very sad that river can take more innocent lives..! Greetings from Alberta Canada
Good question. Unfortunately there is an answer. First of all, local attitudes toward a bridge range from luke warm to unwelcome. This makes government action of any kind unlikely. Secondly, as is the case with any kind of structure like that located in such a remote place, even getting an estimate for the project will be much more expensive than a couple thousand. One firm quoted us about 30,000 dollars to come up with a plan and an estimate. I doubt very much that a bridge will happen for many more years, even though it would be a good idea that would save money on rescues and potentially even lives.
Last Frontier Adventure Club Ok Thanks ...for answering my question about, but I'm really good handyman and I think for bridge material can be find directly very close to river bank (wood, stone) only what is necessary is steel cable 100m or 300 Ft x 1 inch some ropes and some pickup truck Chainsaw ! I check over Google earth and some photos from area and still I think is possible to make this bridge with very, very low cost not 30K...! If I'm there i will voluntary work made buy my son & me! I believe there are good people in this area who would make the suspension bridge that leads still to sort monument of people exploration and human destiny such as Chris..! Sorry for maybe misunderstanding but just to tell you English is not my mother language...!? In my plan is to come and visit this place..! Thx again.
No offence, but do you want to have the responsibility on your back, if you build a bridge and it collapses while someone is crossing it. Maybe crowd funding would be a better idea. Sure lot's would be willing to help. Again, not trying to be offensive. Just things aren't that simple. But cheers, I'm also from Alberta.
Whats the point of makig bridge. Do the preps and go by yourself if you are inspired by chris. Ps if make bridge that place would be now a public park again from where chris walked away from. Materialism its hard and worth to cross and play the wild guy. Hiking mean hiking.
always wanted to go to Alaska just never took the chance when i was younger i remember by aunt and uncle telling me i should go and find work on a fishing boat of some kind there son ray my cousin lived in fairbanks alaska and was a bushpilot he was studying for years to become a commercial pilot until cancer took him , im married now and live in oklahoma maybe one day me and my wife will make it there but thank you for sharing this video
It's funny to see at 9:45 the "The Dahus" sticker, that Belongs to a LOCAL Virginia band. Just to see that, really makes you think how many people it had to hit.
This bus and 2 other buses were hauled out there during the wintertime in the early 60's by a giant Caterpillar which of course was capable of crossing the river when the water was so low. According to another You Tube video I saw, the 2 other buses were taken well beyond this area to be used to bunk employees of a mining company but the tie rod of this bus got damaged (possibly damaged by dragging over a rock) causing a misalignment of the front wheels so severe that it could not be pulled anymore. Eventually the other two buses were taken back out but one could not.
Build a bridge, and people WILL destroy Chris's Memory........Most people who visit here don't understand him anyway.....I'm going through it now.Im living it...........only my home is a car..a small abandoned car..and im 62 and been living in this house car for 7 months......almost 8........I would of died with Chris and be proud to...😎
She looks so much like her brother, her brother his on his next adventure, for all we know already learnt from that one and on to the next one from there. He never made mistakes. Thats how you learn. Without his passing.

So happy I ran into this video. Chris’s story portrayed in “Into the Wild” was so moving to me. May peace be with him and his sister.
It was romanticize by a shitty Hollywood lib-tard producer/ actor named Sean Penn. It’s to bad the movie wasn’t produced by Carine first.

Chris himself eventually came to the conclusion himself he shouldn’t be out there, I think he would want people to learn from his story that survival and backpacking are two very different things.
The historical 142 Bus is sadly gone now, no need to worry about the wilderness any longer.
Im glad they removed the trash
Very touching. And thanks for all the words of cautious, and common sense!
I can’t believe that some hikers have never heard of “Leave no trace”... so disappointing.
because hippies are actually lousy conservationists
It’s actually self explanatory
God bless.
James Sween the bus is gone :(
Gta V what? They took the bus out? Why?
The book by jon krakauer into the wild great read and moive is good. I hate that people leave trash! We have a saying in Wyoming if you pack it in you pack in it out
Why not everyone takes one or two pieces of trash and get it outta there. respect the place where someone died.this is not Mount Everest it can be done!
when you get to heaven lahey will have a drinky poo waiting for ya.. your a good soul.
It's a memorial and should be kept up, not left to deteriorate. However, keeping the environment clean is important, too.
Isnt the trash / litter lighter - on the way home ? Why to leave it there ? Bring - trash backs - to bring everything BACK !
@@KatherineUribe-1 It's not a memorial. It's a hunting shelter where an idiotic bum starved to death.

Like the video to share and spread awareness, this should be preserved best we can not abuse it because you can.
Chris and his story are an amazing thing, please do not let it fade away!!!
Supertramp for life!
RIP Chris McCandless
AMAZING VIDEO!!!! AS SOON AS POSSIBLE I'll go. THANK YOU, AND THANK YOU CHRIS MCCANDLESS-ALEX SUPERTRAMP. FOREVER INTO THE WILD!!!!
francesco89436 why thank him?
Did you ever go?
Very sorry for your loss. Wanted to hike in to the bus. 2015? Made it to the end of stampede road. At 60 was not going to do it alone .
How did the dog get across the river? Or didn't he?
Love this video thanks for sharing it, not to sure how I feel about the bus being removed but if people are making the place a mess it's not fair on the wildlife and the locals rip supertramp your story will always be with me 🙏
Well we know now that Carine is smart as a whip too.
Very nice words you had to say there. Although, I'd LOVE to hear/see your thoughts on the whole situation.
What a tribute Chris's sister did for him by visiting the very place he died at.
Thank you for sharing your journey.
Made this hike in 2012 when I was stationed in AK. It is amazing.
So are we!
If you take something into the wilderness garbage money tents diomonds shoes socks etc etc...... You take it back out with you that's what my grandaddy always said to me growing up!!
Well said that is what i was tought to no matter where you are
It became almost a shrine to Chris and it's a very sad story and brilliant film.
Six years later 'The Bus' flys out under a US Army Chinook. Am betting nobody ever thought that would happen. Very sad to see it go but rescues and fatalities have become to much. Difficult situation just like life........
To me this is what RUclips is supposed to be about. Not knocking off copyrighted material which I love to listen to
I cannot believe that people are so disrespectful to not only leave trash around but to shoot at the bus. WTF is wrong with people??!!!
Luvie1980 the shots are made by the locals to make it less hospitable for the green pilgrims who usually cause problems as chris did he was breaking into cabins and vandalizing them there are videos made by the victims
+Sam gforce. Did you see him do it, is he on camera doing it? Or is it just people talking shit like you are?
but the whole bus there is trash...
Sam gforce bullshit Sammy. BULLSHIT .. gheyforce.
I can, look around in any city trash all over the place. bunch of people who do not give a shit!
I am not sure moving the bus will stop some people from still trying to make the trek out there but certainly cut down the numbers. Hopefully this will reduce the number of rescues that are needed and my sincere hope no one else will lose their life trying to cross the river.
I hiked and ATV the trail 15 times and every time it's new.
The bus was manufactured by 'International Harvesters' presumably at their old factory in Eccleshill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. From my village to the wilds of Alaska, I love that thought.
The bus was recently airlifted by National Guard Helicopter to safe storage. Many needed to be rescued and/or died attempting to reach the bus.
Good idea because that bus shouldn't be blamed for more lost lives.
I can't figure it out why I have this feeling.
try thru hiking the appalachina trail.. clear your head for 5 months and find what you are looking for..might not be what you expected
beautiful video, thank you
Great video, that was awesome to see what the hike is really like. I definitely want to do it sometime. I'm in Healy right now actually but not planning to hike out there. Working in Denali until the end of September. Thanks for making this video.
@Craig wells Hello craig, you still planning to make it out in september?
I saw your video where you visited the 49th State Brewery and the "Into the Wild" bus. I have friends in Alaska right now and they just visited there as well because their friend owns the place.. it's all an interesting bit of synchronicity, to me at least lol..
And you nailed it. I watched your video few days ago. It's interesting.
Who knew it you'd go that big gabriel? Good luck to your iraq tour
@@penguinwill7473 Right on, glad to hear it.
This the real bus?
Yes, but it has since been moved out by helicopter.
I about cried when I saw the river that Chris was unable to cross that Spring.
@8:52 I had to pause the video.
They all stood for the photo........ and they left the empty chair...... for where Chris was sitting in his self portrait. I just lost it for about ten minutes. 😢😭
Something about that just broke me.
Wonder what the state of Alaska did with the bus? I saw where they flew it out with a helicopter. Havnt seen anything since about it.
There is an exhibit being built for it at the UAF Museum of the North
Yeah ain't nothing out there I need to see, I'm watching this and it's enough for me May Chris McCandless R.I.P.🥀🥀🥀🙏🙏📿
I read have a cable half mile north of Stampede rd to cross Teklanika river, It is true? If yes why people do not use and risk lives?
It is not true, any more. It used to be but that cable was cut long ago.
who's here after the bus has been removed?
I am!
I am and the story behind is so intriguing.
Thanks for sharing Definitely an interesting story. And very tempting to take the trip.
The bus has been removed now. Too many unprepared people getting in trouble trying to hike to the bus. It is now at the U of Fairbanks Museum of the North where it will eventually be on display.
The bus is gone now I believe, but the story of Chris lives on. 💜💜🙏🙏🇦🇺🇦🇺
By the way, one fine looking dog! And thank you for sharing! Would love to do this once! Thank you
Hello! and Great video! Would you happen to know the exact coordinates of where Chris left Jim Gallien's truck and began his journey? Also, would you happen to know the exact coordinates where Chris turned around after he was unable to cross the river?
I like to add something.... A deep bow of respect!
To whom?? And for what reason??
I wish I could've made the hike up to the bus.. maybe I will get to see it in the museum now
someone should put a guestbook in the bus rather than just writing on the walls
Carine has a journal there for visitors to sign.
no one should be going in the bus in the first place...
@@jimlahey4772 is just an old abandoned bus for shelter they just need to respect and not write and leave trash
thats why it was left there in the first place for people who needed shelter .
Such a sad story makes me cry every time I relive it
Like wise sir!!! I will feel releive maybe when i will be able to go and visit the magic bus and to meet carine.
nature is beautiful and peaceful.
Kathy Gregg
What a beautiful person Carine is ...& all her friends here.🌻
the bus is no longer there.
Where is This in Alaska ? How Far it is from The Closest General Store ? Been to Military - so I just wonder ? Thanks
RIP.
Del Stanley. This is so sad, looking to their whole life together and just that quick your spouse is gone.
Wow, I'm so inspired by a man who was told he needed more equipment. but he thought he had a superior connection to nature than anyone else, so he didn't need equipment.
Seems they did remove the bus now, not there anymore, sad.
Thx again.
we already have a bridge to nowhere..

Where is the location of this bus im in Fairbanks
anyone know what the national guard did with the bus
It's on display in an alaskan University or something, Google it
so did the guy drive the bus out there?
