I go on a four day backpacking trip with Miranda Webster, aka @MirandaGoesOutside, in the canyons of Utah and Arizona. As per tradition, I "battle" them over who has the best, most fun, most quirky gear. Miranda is a formidable foe as we discuss at length our favorite items and what really stands out to us in our backpacking loadout. Sorry to @KyleHatesHiking and @DanBecker for catching some strays here as we lovingly make fun of them.

Huge thanks to @mirandagoesoutside, her video we reference is coming in a week (I think!). Unfortunately we ran out of time to include Rainer here but that feels pretty on brand. So sorry to @kylehateshiking for catching some serious strays here. Thanks to @danbecker for being everyone's favorite dad. And definitely thanks to @taylorthenahamshahiker for the best gear recommendation of them all!
I died at the Dan Becker boyscout dad stray 😂
haha I couldn't resist!
Many more collaborations like this please! You guys are the new version of entertainment (and education) for many of us and we appreciate your content! Keep it coming!
Thank you! This was honestly just too much fun. So yes, I think we'll do it again!
I loved this video mostly for the A+ cinematography. 😉
In all seriousness so fun to film this and watch you and Miranda crush the fun gear banter! I volunteer to have you roast my gear next time.
Yes, the DP and cameraman deserve awards, but especially the gaffer that lit this scene with such magic and attention to color 😉. And let's not forget the video editor. I hope to see the 180° version on Miranda's channel soon!
We didn't see what was in your pack!🤔😂
😂
This is probably my favorite backpacking video to date. My wife and I were laughing hard at all the funny comments and witty retorts. We loved @mirandagoesoutside sharing some of the hygiene challenges that women face in the back country and how she solved them. And we love that @eric_hanson shared his story about pre-cancer spot in his ear and now wears wide brimmed hats. The hat is awesome, by the way.
And the editing of this video was also freakin hilarious. Shout out to boy scout dad @danbecker.
Thanks all for the great entertainment and making my wife and I more hungry for backpacking.
Thank you so much! I'm honored. Miranda and Rainer made it so much fun.
Eric I think your sleep system takes the cake however I do really appreciate Miranda’s “trinkets” which help make the experience all that more comfortable. I am particularly interested in her bootie sandal combo as well.
Miranda definitely has the "trinkets"! Bidet and booties for the win!
Great collaboration. As a dad with girls, I really appreciate hearing Miranda talk about using the bathroom for women because I have no clue what to tell my girls. Huge thanks.
Miranda has several "women specific" videos you and your daughters should check out. Happy hiking!
Miranda is one of my favorite , love her energy.
Thank you ❤❤❤
@@MirandaGoesOutside you're welcome
Awesome collaboration! What I learned was that I need this product : Down booties with sandal bottoms that have a bidet attachment on the heel. 😅
#1 most comprehensive comment 😊
Torrid Booties have synthetic insulation.
I think you need to shoot a sequel with the two of you and Kyle, so that he can have a fair chance to defend himself! Funny stuff.
THIS!
The BEST Backpacker vs so far!
Ok, for tent and sleep system, Eric. Because it's all matchy matchy 😂
For camp foot comfort and personal elimination kit, Miranda! But don't eliminate on your booties 😂
Don't go on the booties! Low key very good advice!
I enjoy seeing all the Utubers I watch get together and compare notes, as a Scout Master we as leaders do the same and share that info with our Scouts. Oh and Miranda, yes I still have my “Canvas” backpack but I use it as a training aid.
The ZenBivy sleep system is the most comfortable I’ve ever used. Eric didn’t mention that while his is very expensive, it’s also the new Ultralight Bed. I have the more affordable Light Bed which was about $300 if I remember correctly, and only a few oz heavier. I pair it with the Big Agnes Rapide SL sleeping pad and it’s easily the best sleep you can get in the backcountry. Also, I love Miranda’s camp shoe setup. Mine is similar but I wear Bedrock sandals (the Cairn Pro II model). They’re perfect for stream crossings as well as being excellent camp shoes. They are the kind that go between your big toe and index toe though, so instead of bringing regular socks or down booties for warmth, I bring heavy weight socks that Injinji made especially for Bedrocks that are basically mittens for your feet. All the comfort of wool socks but no twedgie!
The down bootie and Teva sandal combination is crazy
My two favorite RUclipsrs together!!!! Mind blown!🤯
heck yes!
You mentioned Kyle Hates Hiking at least 5 times. Kyle wins LOL!!!!!
Whelp, just purchased the bidet and pee tube via your link. :) I have a shewee that’s bulky so don’t bring backpacking, this will solve. Have a bidet that screws onto a water bottle, but like Miranda, I can’t use the same bottle for this as drinking so I bring an extra, plus the water is a bit difficult to squirt out from squeezing a bottle in that position. Back when Giardia just started to become a thing, I got it. Was very sick for 6 weeks so I don’t mess around. Also, if you read “The Cactus Eater,” one guy’s self-deprecating and very funny account about attempting the PCT, he contracted it and said the DR told him that it was probably due to his not so sanitary habits on trail. Eweee.
I love this. This was so much to watch. My two favs battling it out
Been waiting for this collab 🔥
Thanks for bring together two of my favorite backpackers, you are both such incredible inspirations! And the Zenbivy rocks!!
The collaboration I’ve always wanted!!!!! Yay
extremely enjoyable video!!!! y'all are so amicable and it's a joy to watch y'all compare gear
Great comparison video! You both did a great job! TY!😎
I loved this video! my two favorite back packing channels colliding is so cool. please do some more collabs together!
ngl, that quilt setup looks nicer than my bed at home.
haha yeah it's pretty absurd, soooo cozy.
I like Eric’s tent and Miranda’s sleep system. I am a fan of the Hammock Gear quilts. I have a 30 degree and a 20 degree and have stayed warm in the 30s. I get them in wide and overfill. Fun video! Poor Kyle, Lol.
I think the extra wide part is the key. haha yeah Kyle really took some shots here!
I love my Hammock Gear quilt too!! I have the 20 degree
Love this collaboration...you and Miranda have great chemistry.
This gear comparison isn’t fair 😂 love seeing Miranda on your channel gosh darn!
Love this vid great job!!! More pls!!!!!
What an amazing hiking trip that had to be! Slot canyons are amazing and this was truly incredible.
I have EE & HG quilts. Love them all. Haven't had cold spots in either. Highly recommended the X-Mid 1P, Nemo Tensor, and ULA packs.
Stellar guests on this one. Loved your setup more.
Miranda and Rainer are the best!
The Double Rainbow Li is the best tent ever made. ❤
Nice video guys - I love the interaction! Thank you!!
This video was so fun to watch!
Thank you! It was a blast to make!
Great video - have the Tarptent Double Rainbow Li and it’s an amazing shelter. Different price point, but love it. Sub 2lb, actually fits 2x 25” pads (tight but works), a back country palace for one, and freestanding option when needed. Love it!
You guys were very entertaining. Great collab.
Yehhey, The collab I am dying for hahahaha
I loved this so much! Miranda is amazing!! The banter was really excellent, really hope to see more of y'all collaborating in the future. I am partial to Miranda, but.... clearly your setup wins. Here''s hoping Zenbivy teams up with y'all for a give away and/or makes a budget line. 🤞
Love the camaraderie and tips. I have the EE booties and love them also paired with my camp shoes. I also have a zenbivey light bed and love it too and of course now they come up with an ultralight. The Nemo tent looks really cool.
I wish the Zenbivy still offered full length sheets for their light and ultralight beds as I absolutely HATE the half sheets. You can still get it with the Core bed and mix and match the quilt, but then of course you have different fill weights between top and hood. The tiny weight savings are just not worth the hassle of the half sheet moving up the mattress all the time, and I really don't like the feel of bare skin on the mattress.
I use the core and there is no way i am buying the ultra light version. I hate talking about the weight difference that you won’t notice anyway. Also is super expensive!
I got the Core Sheet with the Light quilt, I can't wait to test it out, here's hoping it works great and made a good mix/match decision
Awesome video. Loved it. Definitely would love to see more like this. As for the gear challenge, it's a tie for me. Your sleep system is great but her poop system is just as good. Keep it up.
Great show!😊
I have the same tent that Miranda has and I love it. I prefer her pack too because I carry very few things with me. It’s a Northern Ultralight. Yay for small enterprises!
Hi, Eric. Just gotta say I really enjoyed your personality, sense of humour, banter, and enthusiastic sharing of knowledge in your video on Miranda Goes Outside channel.
Had to come follow your channel. Looking forward to watching through the rest of your catalogue 💚
Love this video so much. I’m obsessed with Miranda’s Lite AF backpack and fanny pack!
Love seeing @mirandagoesoutside in your series!
I love these guest episodes.
I love seeing you and Miranda together in a video... you need to do more! As for bougie setup... yeah you win hands down. I run a Enlightened Eq. 10 degree Quilt with my nemo extreme or regular tensor... pretty damn comfortable. I was going to look into if bivy sold just the pillow holder, if they don't they should because I would buy one in hot minute.
Yes to Miranda the pee kit I use is P style and it is life changing!!! Thanks for sharing all the gear Eric I will never be able to afford LOL Looks like you all had a great time. It is really fun to see different collaborations keep it up! Thanks!
Oh I loved this! I'd love to see all three of you, Miranda & Dan together!
I love Miranda and her vibes, but you won this one, Eric!
I love this series of videos! Keep it going! I would like to see Darwin go more bougie and check out what he brings along.
I've got to say that the sleeping and shelter system by Eric looks delightful, but as a woman, my Miranda goes wild kula cloth is amazing! I'm using it in Down Under and it is unreplaceable! When I go to US with more $$ I will be checking the Zenbivi sleeping setup
The Zenbivy is just *chef’s kiss* - such a fantastic sleep system. The chair is also a staple in my kit now. Have to say tho that I love Miranda’s staple items - the UL backpack/fanny pack combo, the poo kit…
the Zenbivy is about as nice as it gets! Miranda's poo kit is pretty stellar for sure.
I love my Lite-AF pack and he did some custom things I liked from my Z-Packs bag and incorporated them into my new bag. And yes the fanny packs are great, didn’t think I’d like it but I love it! ❤
Poor Kyle got roasted! I definitely agree about the bottom sheet of the Zenbivy, for me that makes most of the difference for a cozy sleep. Also no way i am ever going on a trip without my moonlite chair! Great video man, you won the battle by far! Thank you for the content!
I love the Zenbivy (have 25F UL). Definitely use it with the sheet, but there's no need to use their pillow or pad. Yes, pricey, but very comfortable. The hooks-system take a little getting used to, but it's not an issue. Loving that tent!
This was so fun!
I love that you all got together for this trip! Get a zenbivy Miranda, you won’t regret it!
love the two unique perspectives from Miranda and Eric, however the contrast between their camp footwear couldn't be more hilarious...Eric just came from the beach in his flip flops and Miranda in down booties...classic!
I don’t miss the ability to use the mesh inner tent only of a double wall tent which is why a single wall tent like the Tarptent Rainbow works well for me. When I head for the tent I’m ready to sack out and would only stargaze for a minute or two anyway. I also sleep on my side so don’t really look up and on top of that I live in the pacific northwest which means rain is always a possibility so even with a double wall tent I’m likely to have the rain fly on. Personal preference I suppose.
Thanks for mentioning Taylor. She does a great job in New Hampshire.
This is one of the greatest battle of the backpackers because I love both of your channels and this was so funny yet very informative (maybe too much information, 😵💫😵💫 LOL!). I have to go with Eric's setup because I'm a NEMO fan girl, LOL!!! Tip for Miranda - do not use your Kula Cloth to blow your nose with.😉😂 I do like the fact that they show up in the dark when I'm trying to get out of my tent in the middle of the night when nature calls but I do bring extra TP to wipe my nose with and not cross contaminate my Kula Cloth, LOL! 🤣 And Eric, I love your Indiana Jones style hat! My husband and I have similar wide brimmed hat that still flatten down when you need to stuff them in a tight spot. I'm also a Melanoma survivor so I have to use more protection than most while backpacking.
I think this was the most I've laughed filming a video ever. So glad you enjoyed it! Wide brimmed hats for the win!
The is the most true to life AI recreation ive ever seen! 😂
I’ve been a Zenbivy guy since they came out and it’s the only comfortable way for me to sleep. Perfect for side sleepers or anyone that can’t do mummy bags due to their restrictive nature.
Also, I have the same Tarptent and it’s perfect for areas w/o a lot of space to set up a tent! I actually switched to it from a Durston tent. About the same weight, more versatile, and I love how it has a porch!
Great video guys!
Thank you! I'm only familiar with the TarpTent Rainbow and that one is really cool. And yeah, Zenbivy is the way to go if you can fork out the cash!
@@eric_hanson There is a double wall 2 person Rainbow that you can star gaze with that looks interesting. It’s made of Ultra Sailcloth which is kinda different. Under 40 oz. weight. 🙂
Loving the collaborations with other media centric backpackers. Hopefully you can go hiking with Kyle in the near future
Dude this crossover is tripping me out!
Great video! I need that sleep system! 😂
It's pretty spectacular.
Two of my favs!!! 😊
As another commenter has said, you can get a great, lightweight ZenBivy sleep system for far less than $1000! I love mine. I use the Nemo pad I already had, then bought the ZenBivy 25 deg down quilt and sheet for less than $400 (total weight without pad is 24 oz.)
Zenbivy sheet also fits great with the Big Agnes Rapide AND the Klymit
Another great video, entertaining and informative. Yikes, I am never hiking anywhere where I am packing out my poo, but that is just me.
Awesome video folks! Would have loved to see Rainer's gear, especially since Miranda washed his sleepy-bag for him last year. So for bodily functions and beautiful pack Miranda wins. But for tent, chair and sleepy-gear, Eric wins.
haha Miranda might have to wash Rainer's sleeping mattress after all that butt cheek contact.
Honestly just LIVING for that Tevas + down booties socks & sandals combo that @mirandagoesoutside is rocking 👌🏻😍
One of the best videos yet ! Love this series and love Miranda. I love Eric’s sleep system and Miranda’s 💩 kit. I would have to pick Miranda’s tent simply because it looks very roomy for a 1 person tent😊
Thank you! That Tarptent looks like the roomiest 1P UL tent I've seen.
My favorite part of Miranda's loadout has to be Rainier, the poo transportation set up is a close second though
Poop + Rainer = Miranda
I'm such a fan girl of both of your channels. When I started backpacking, you both were the primary sources of my information & I've learned so much. Eric wins with his Zenbivy (I have the light bed) & Nemo set up! Miranda wins on the pack (I want it!) & cool gadgets.
I'm so glad you've somehow learned something from me!
Love the video, love all the gear, Miranda’s tent and sleeping bag not so much, lol. I just ordered the Nemo Moonlite Bluebird on sale for $135. I really like the elite version but I couldn’t resist that price.
Eric is using a 10 degree UL Zenbivy in this video. I just checked and here are the specs for 10 degree Large in UL, Light, and Core:
UL is 900 fill down, 1lb 14 oz, $659
Light is 800 down, 2 lb 3 oz, $329
Core is 650 down, 2 lb 10 oz, $279
Going from Light to UL costs $330 to save 5 oz. That's $1,056/lb in weight savings. Going from core to light costs $50 to save 7 oz. That's a more efficient $114/lb. However, if you go for the 3-season 25-deg bag, Core is $199 and 1lb12oz and Light is $279 and 1lb9oz. $80 for 3 oz = $427/lb. This analysis negates the volume benefit of going lighter weight, which can be important.
UL insulated 25" sheet is 6.9 oz, $179
Light insulated 25" sheet is 8.7 oz, $99
Core insulated 25" sheet is 11.2 oz, $109 (pricing is more because it is a full sheet)
Going from Light to UL costs $80 to save 1.8 oz. That's $711/lb to shave weight.
If you just want 25 degree, then go with the core bed and the non-UL sheet that meets your needs (I'd opt for uninsulated). If you want the 10 degree warmth, then go with the Light quilt and the non-UL sheet that meets your needs.
I could never get on board with the bidets for the exact reasons you mentioned. Just grossed me out too much to use my drinking water bottle for that… lol I would love to reduce the amount of TP I need to carry out though, so I might give this other one a try! 🤙🏼
This was so fun!!! I did love the toilet system discussion and am obsessing over Mira dad pack!! The zen boxy system is pretty sweet though! I declare a tie!!!
..I think the Zen Bivy sleep system looks awesome (only looks for now because I have not used it) ... Nemo tent is awesome ... don't think the Rainbow tent would hold up to a night of force winds ,, especially broadside ... Miranda's pack constructed to personal specs ,, a huge plus .. although I prefer a full center zip + the top load with brain (Mountainsmith) ,, Mystery Ranch has a series close to function ... Misc. smaller items are more individual choice needs .. .. Chairs can be a comfort at camp ,especially as you get older ,, but prefer taller leg/seat height such as Helinox Sunset ...
Miranda's Ancient pronunciation again!🤣 Gotta love it
😂 I’ll never get it right!!!
Miranda Goes Inside VS Eric Indoors!
What a crossover!
Love seeing Miranda!
Eric wins tent for sure, although I do love Tarptents and have two. Miranda wins pack. That Mystery Ranch zipper just seems silly, but my tent goes on the outside so I don't open the pack until the tent is already pitched. Faffing about with a sleep system, nope. Neither one. I want warm comfy and zzzzzzz. Also the bidet bottle - way too big and more faffing about putting it together. A nasal lavage bottle works just as well and no removable parts. Poop bag - where do you put that thing in the pack? Maybe next - go head to head on dinner! Best dessert wins! Love the setting and wish I was there too. Great video.
Miranda is my favorite! Love her videos!💗
Damnit Eric, I just bought myself a Tilley T4MO-1 Hikers Hat (which I'm absolutely loving so far), but now I want your bloody AHM Crushable Leather Outback Hat... it looks so cool! As a bald person, a quality wide-brimmed hat is incredibly important to me. We'll see how the Tilley performs during the SoCal desert on the PCT this month... maybe I'll have to upgrade to the AHC one if I'm not fully sold. If you have any partner/discount codes for American Hat Makers, please let us know!
Like the side buckle AF Fanny pack. Everything else I like of Eric’s & that quit looks so comfy.
I have an old oversized backpack w/ brain & take brain off to use as Fanny pack. Win/win
Anyone have thoughts on the Burrow quilt? I’m looking at getting it but now not so sure.
Love Miranda's backpack and girly gear, but Eric, your tent and sleeping setup is the BOMB! Both of you have great items and now I have even better options for my own travels! Hugs to both, oh and to that wonderfully snarky camera man too. Lol! 🤣
Miranda wins for being the niftiest and most colorful backpacker. I only wish we'd had more hours to include more Rainer!
If you have the B-roll footage, I'd love to see Rainer's set up (and just generally more Miranda!)
@@bluemonkey0121 There will be another video coming of the overall trip together.
Eric’s Tent and sleep system, and hat. Miranda’s backpack, and gear
I'm super jealous of Eric's sleep setup, but Miranda wins for brining @RainerGolden, the most underrated thing to bring along on a trip :)
This is why I love these gear reviews. Some hate them because they think it's just a big infomercial. Fair enough, but I crave the gear reviews. That quilt is close to $400 and Miranda was just sort of meh about it. I can't spend even half that amount on a piece of gear that I'm not going to love. I can't just keep buying the same type of gear over and over until I find the right one. I need to get as close to perfect as I can on my first swing. Hence, I love the real-world use and review videos. Thank you.
Same here. It’s hard to settle on something because I can’t and don’t want to buy over and over. It’s intimidating.
This was the best thing i’ve seen since the Green Hornet and Kato were on the Batman show!
This is a great video for you two. Eric, you have an incredible calm and fair manner onscreen with Miranda, and she bubbles with her usual enthusiasm. The Kit Award goes to Eric, very hard to beat the comfort, utility, and modest weight of a lightweight glamping setup. But Miranda deserves the award for being creatively unique in all aspects. Of course, it might be Rainer as producer that wraps all this together, but the Kyle references added to the levity. Can we get a "second season" with such a natural flow of sharing ideas? Will Kyle appear with you for a mano a mano matchup on long distance camp decor? I guess we'll have to stay tuned, but thanks for this delightful video!
Haha yes! "creatively unique in all aspects" perfectly sums up Miranda. I definitely intend to do this with Kyle some time. We haven't been able to meet up yet, but it'll happen!
@@eric_hanson Anytime you want to compare my 1960s-70s backpacking gear with the slick (much better) kit you've got, drop me a line and I'll be happy to oblige. It might be illuminating for some folks.
Cool to see the different channels I watch combine. Eric’s sleeping set up does look comfy but out of my price range too.
The Zenbivy sleep set up seems awesome. Miranda has the best foot gear
Love to see you both in the same video! make some more :) My vote would be for Eric setup but it's okay cause it wasn't really Miranda's regular set up :)
yeah I'll have to do another when Miranda isn't doing a crazy RUclipsrs pick her gear trip.
So glad you had Miranda on! :)
I have a lot of the same gear Miranda is rocking so i’m voting for her. Love my Tarp Tent Rainbow Li, Lite AF Curve 40 FS with matching fanny pack and ThermArest Xlite. I also have the EE booties and sandals combo.
