    I have just been hired in a game studio as a 3D artist generalist, they asked me to switch from Max to Maya. I've been using it for almost a week and I am finding this transition very simple (and pleasant). Made me realize how much Max is an old software and how much the tool held back my potential for years...

      Older software tend to get crude build-up; they are very feature-heavy, but the codebase gets bloated and often buggy and harder to maintain over time, and as programming practices change, harder to,overhaul and update to new APIs and such. Photoshop for example. It’s the Big Daddy of photo manipulation software. It does it all, and Adobe keeps piling on new features to maintain sales and stay hungry and ahead of the pack, but It’s codebase is huge and unwieldy. For professionals, they ‘need’ it along with the rest of the suite, everything integrates nicely, it’s a business expense so not as concerned with the hefty price tag, and they just get bigger more powerful computers to overcome the bloat.
      Sometimes starting over from scratch with a new lean design is the better option, even if it’s gonna take years to build parity, because it is far more problematic to retrofit a core feature, causing all sorts of cascading bugs and incompatibilities. Tricky to do.

    I find that combining tutorials with personal projects the best way to learn. For example you could start a new project and do it by yourself and whenever you have something in mind you wanna do but don't know how to do you look up a tutorial for that specific thing learn it and write it down and then move on until your next roadblock.

    Yeah, it is tutorial hell loop. We feel like we are learning much by watching a lot of tutorials and it will put you in loop and you start to feel like you have learned a lot, but the moment you start to make it yourself you're forced to watch again the tutorials.

    • @ironlogic7837
      @ironlogic7837 3 года назад +5

      This is why people take notes during class. You shouldn't watch tutorials like you're watching tv. You should be going over it in your head over and over, thinking about "why" someone does a certain step, pausing to think about things, googling questions during the tutorial, reviewing what you learned from a tutorial after finishing (even days after) and yes, even testing/trying it yourself. You have to be your own teacher.
      You can learn a lot by observing others, but if you're just watching, without using your brain, you're going to forget the information before it's ever useful. It's very tempting to turn a tutorial into entertainment, but you have to remember it's not. Human brains take a long time to adapt, even to simple things. Human memory is very flawed.
      Treat yourself like you're going to forget, even simple things, in a matter of days if you don't record, review and test yourself, because unfortunately, that's probably how it's going to be for 99% of us. There are a lot of techniques out there, but there are no shortcuts. Learning takes consistent time and effort.

    Interesting advice videos. I’m doing some research in preparation to learn 3D sculpting, I find sometimes watching a tutorial through first, even if you don’t ‘get’ everything first time, when it comes to actually going through it, you already have some familiarity with what’s coming up, and you pick up things and understand things better on the 2nd time. We learn by repetition, we only ever take in a small percentage of new information, esp when it is information dense, just as rewatching a movie with a complex plot can help,pick up nuances you missed the first time, and with further rewatching, enjoy the journey more.
    Personally, I tend to want to follow a tutorial fairly closely first, maybe have minor touches that are different, but stick to what is being taught, because you don’t know what you don’t know, and there are usually reasons for the steps taken, once you are familiar with something, when you know the rules, then you can break them and freestyle more as you have a better overall understanding, and playing and experimenting teaches you things as you problem solve, you may winder ‘how do I do this?’, you google it, read or watch a short tutorial,on that one thing, and you learn. As you say, projects are great for that, precisely because you have a goal with problems to solve under way, or reinforce things you have learned already and build on them.

I definitely forgot some stuff I've done regularly in C4d, but even tough i haven't used C4d in 3-4 years i still have a vivid recollection of most things, just some details slipped away. Unimportant things i did not very often. That's how it starts - if i don't use C4d for the next couple of years, much more will fade away -that's just how it is. But i am pretty sure It would not take long to get up to date again. Things go away, but vague instincts of muscle memory and hints remain longer. Find a 'project' with sufficient references. Then model it without all of the references. When you have done your best, pull out the remaining ortho references and improve your model. Repeat with another project. You should be able to learn from your mistakes using this simple process.

  • @jornm799

    It is too easy to fall into the trap of watching too many tutorials instead of sitting down and actually getting stuff done in the software you are trying to learn. I'd say the ratio of time spent on tutorials vs. time spent doing things with the software should be no less than 30% to 70%. Then again, having watched a decent amount of tutorials before sitting down on a project does seem to make the experience more smooth and less frustrating, since there is already a notion on how to solve problems efficiently. Anyway, I like how 99% of what you say in your videos is true, and I do not have an example for the remaining 1% off the top of my head. ;)

    • @tstone9151
      @tstone9151 4 года назад +2

      For animation, Maya is the clear winner. Especially after Maya 2020 release, the rigging tools is what Maya excels in. For modeling, you can use whatever software you want, they're all basically the same thing imo. May as well stick with Maya if you plan on breaking in the industry, you aren't gonna find any gigs that rely on Blender. But overall, you want to study all the tools you can while doing project, don't fall victim to becoming a fan of a tool

    • @tstone9151
      @tstone9151 4 года назад +2

      BrokenAngel67 you’re correct, every software is basically the same. Even for animation, all we need is a graph editor and keyframable controls/joints. Blender/Maya/C4D/Houdini/Max have all the tools you need for production, and their API is pretty straight forward

    • @PeterKoperdan
      @PeterKoperdan 3 года назад

      If you want to work in the 3D industry, learn the industry standard tools you think you will need. It's easy to google which tool is used for what.
      If you are really really good, you can achieve comparable results with most main 3D software. That said, certain things are easier to do in certain software. For professionals speed is extremely important. If you are a beginner, make your life easier by sticking to the required industry standard from the start.
      Blender is a fantastic software, but it's not an industry standard yet. It's best for personal work or independent professional use.
      3ds Max = archviz, game assets
      ZBrush = sculpting
      Maya = animation
      Cinema 4D = motion graphics
      Houdini = procedural modeling, simulations, motion graphics, crazy magic
      If you wanna aim really high, learn Houdini. It's the hardest to learn and therefore the least known among 3D artists. Houdini skills are in high demand..

Any thoughts are appreciated

      It's a different workflow.
      Just because the modifiers don't exist, doesn't mean it has to be that destructive.
      If you're serious about your 3d career, it would be good to add Maya to your skillset

    Best thing to take away from the video
    "SIT YOUR ASS DOWN AND DO IT"
    Write down everything you learn
    And it's True, I learned Maya, and Adobe software via University..
    However, i had to learn Marvelous Designer(and how clothing works), Zbrush(and how to sculpt in 3D), 3DSMAX, and SpeedTree(types of trees how branches differ and vegetation)on my own. All software is intimidating, i was so afraid to touch ZBrush and SpeedTree specifically because they're very intimidating software. However you're never gonna learn it If you dont do it..
    Everything is shit in the beginning but it's about where you get a year from now or 3 years from now not where you are now

    You are taking all the fun out of watching tutorials! Stop it! Ahh Just kidding, for me personally I've been watching tutorials... and also working on projects for the past year, I´m a Blender user since versión 2.79 and the transition to 2.8 has been almost seamless because it reminds me more of playing a video game where the end goal is to create whatever i want, I would like to know if this happens to anyone else.

    I did everything he said when I started blender by instinct. Look at my channel , my first rendered animation only took a month of paying as much attention as I could now im honestly comfortable way beyond where I thought Id be tbh. I was a moron before blender, now Im honestly am semi skilled lmfaooooo
    PS. Do not ever try to finish any projects your first month. Make something simple and then make it better the next time. Then try something else very simple. All your projects in the first month are practice and pretty shit dont look for realism look for basic understanding of the program

    The title of the video is misleading. Kinda clickbait. It would be so much better with "software" or "any 3D software". I tend to disagree with the advice to write everything down. It can be fine for some people, but not for everyone. It depends on a person and stuff being learned. For example, learning hotkeys for me goes much faster when I'm pressing it many times in real projects (besides most normal software have tooltips with hotkeys already written). I think the writing down should be reserved for illogical and hard to remember, rarely used stuff. Like if some render setting is being placed outside render windows, or if there is a bug where you need to put dummy texture file in the slot before baking or rendering, or if there is a recurring bug that can be avoided only by not doing something.

    BTW another question why did you guys actually decided to learn blender...? You know a lot of programs already (maya and max, mari and others) that can do exactly the same and/or better than what blender can do... You said yourselves blender isnt used in big studios... You have a lot of experience in the industry, could find jobs easily; you are "westerners" with probably quite good ammount of money/income (= you can easily afford subscription prices of maya or max and other programs etc...)
    Taking ALL of this into consideration i have hard time figuring out WHY specifically you two decided to learn blender...? Do you really think "its the future" and small/mid and even big studios will eventually grow tired of paying subscriptions prices and will migrate (at least to some extent) to Blender... And you are just trying to "get ahead of the game/future" and learn blender today...?
    Because honestly, thats the only reason i can think of why you two could have decided to learn blender... (?)
    (Curious)
    Thanks
