Nobody grooves as hard as Dave. The gear is just icing on the cake.
I am a lifelong guitarist who's just getting into the bass side of things. What have I learned thus far? Bass is a very difficult instrument to master. Yes, it only has four strings, but that does not mean jack shit. Hitting each string with equal force and tempo is a cast iron bitch. And I learned that Dave is fucking dope. Not many of his caliber walking this planet.
smacman68 I find myself playing the bass the same way I play a guitar, which is a habit that I need to get out of and I find that I am very weak when it comes to fretting the thickest string.
play with a pick and get a short scale.
Yeah, all the little things you can do sloppy on guitar and get away with are a lot more noticeable on bass, so you really have to get your technique down. As for trying to hit each string with equal force, if you're issue is getting a consistent volume, a compressor/limiter can help with that. A lot of bass amps even have one built in.

With a modern bass with active EQ, you can easily get pick style attack using your fingers on a bass.
I always have used the finger style and it was never a problem for me even using late 70s era equipment , like a Rick 4001S and an acoustic 320 with a 408 cab that had 4 15 inch speakers. You want bright? Try that combo and tell me you need to use a pick.

As amazing as Dave sounds normally, when he grabbed that pick and started hacking away that amp started to sing. Ashdowns are made to make pick-playing sound fantastic.

My ashdown amp has that "sub harmonics" switch on it but I never really seem to use it.

mark hawksford I'm fairly certain they play in drop-Db. Low to high: Db-Ab-Db-Gb. May be Drop-C, tho.

trolls gonna troll. Like all good musicians you have a range of actions tunings scale lengths pickups and string gauges which all alter the sound and will be used for different songs. Not to mention tone wood ;)
The chapmen bass is a 4 string the ibanez is a 5 string thats why he uses it
And the "thing that comes in January" probably is a chapman 5 string bass so no need for the ibanez anymore if the chapman is any good.
